    Six-pack for Thursday

-- If you don't think Joe Girardi was intent on flexing his $200M muscles against the Rays Wednesday, ask him why Jeter, ARod and Pettitte were out of the lineup for the game.

-- Butch Harmon dumped John Daly as a golf pupil because, to paraphrase him, Daly cares more about drinking than he does about golfing. Guess ol' Butch didn't like the job Jon Gruden did caddying in Tampa.

-- Red Sox have lefty reliever Jon Switzer in camp, the same guy who put 119 hitters on base in 66 IP with Tampa Bay the last few years. I doubt he'll make the world champs' roster.

-- Bud Selig earned $14,515,071 last year as Commissioner of the worst-run pro sports league in America. Imagine what he'd make if he was doing a good job.

-- The Giants signed David Carr to be backup QB. Why?

-- Joe Girardi needs to remember one thing; his team has lot more to lose than Tampa does, should he turn their eighteen game divisional rivalry into Friday Night at the Fights.

Thursday's List of 13: What I'm looking forward to learning this baseball season

      13) How will Joe Torre fare without a $200M payroll to lean on?

      12) Will ESPN or FOX dare to televise Rockies' regular season game? Does ESPN know the Rockies exist?

      11) Can the Phillies get off to a fast start, for once?

      10) Will Padres' $1M gamble on Mark Prior pay off?

      9) I'm looking forward to hearing Giant broadcasters Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow, an excellent team, who are now unburdened from having to tiptoe around the Barry Bonds circus on a nightly basis.

      8) Can Dusty Baker inject some life into the Reds? He's a good manager, but not exactly known as a crafty handler of pitchers.

      7) Will the expected Mariners-Angels match race take place in the AL West? Can Texas escape the cellar?

      6) How can the A's not lose 100 games? They're a lot like the Indians in the beginning of the movie Major League - who the hell are these freakin' guys?

      5) Can Carlos Gomez come close to replacing Torii Hunter in CF in Minnesota? As I type this, he's hitting a crisp .148, not critical, but also not encouraging.

      4) I had a joke in here about Rocco Baldelli and his injuries, but now that he has been put on DL with "extreme fatigue" I just hope his overall health is OK. It appears doubtful that he'll ever play for the Rays again, and will become a free agent after this season ends.

If he makes the All-Star team in 2009 with Bronx or Boston, the conspiracy theorists (like me) will have a field day.

      3) I want to see the new ballpark in Washington- is it hitter's or pitcher's park?

      2) Can the Mets live up to their lofty expectations? They have lot of older players, but their payroll is huge, much is expected. They will be one of 2008's most intriguing storylines.

      1) If Joe Girardi's Bronx Bombers are starting turf wars with the mighty Rays, imagine what is going to happen when his band of tough guys get to Fenway Park.

        Tips and Trends
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Washington Wizards [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Cavs: The Cavaliers have been behind the injury 8-ball this season, and right now their depth up front is being tested. Center Ben Wallace is dealing with a sore back while Cleveland's other big man Zydrunas Ilgauskas remains sidelined with his own back injury. It's a new face contributing every night with LeBron James, and the Cavs have won 8 of 12. Cleveland is 12-1 when C Anderson Varejao has a double-double, and James said: "We are playing good basketball."

Cavs are 10-5 ATS in their last 15 road games.

Key Injuries- C Ben Wallace (5 ppg; back) is questionable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Wizards: This stretch of games for the Wizards is extremely crucial, as they look to stay in the hunt for the playoffs. The Wizards defeated an injured Bucks team last time out, but they are allowing a season high 102 ppg over their last 5. Caron Butler (hip) is expected to return to action for this game, but according to team insiders he may be "rusty" which won't help their defense.

Wizards are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games overall.

Key Injuries- F Caron Butler (21 ppg; hip) is expected to return, but may be "rusty."

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Phoenix Suns [TNT | 10:30 PM]

Warriors: Golden State has been playing inspired basketball on the road of late, winning 3 out of 4 on their latest road trip. The team's road play has been so impressive; the Warriors won 12 games away from home all of last season and already has 18 road wins this year. They are averaging an amazing 116 points per game in their last 11 away from home.

The OVER is 9-1 in Golden State's last 10 road games.

Key Injuries- F Chris Webber (4 ppg; knee) is rehabbing his knee and will not play.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Suns: Shaquille O'Neal is playing nearly 30 minutes a game now and said he is enjoying the extended time on the court. The Suns avoided a letdown last time out against the Grizzlies and simply out-ran them en route to a 132-111 victory. The win moved them to 42-22, 1 game behind No. 5 seed New Orleans in the West, and coach Mike D'Antoni said: "Things are looking better."

The OVER is 11-3 in Phoenix's last 14 games overall.

        Key Injuries- NONE

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Big East Quarters: Villanova vs. Georgetown [ESPN | 12 PM ET]

Villanova: The Wildcats face another must-win situation here if they hope to get an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. They squeezed Syracuse out in the first round 82-63 Wednesday by hitting 8-of-11 3-pointers in the second half en route to a 20-point advantage after the break. The team had closed the first half on an 8-0 run in the final 1:10 to pull within 1 point at halftime. Insiders believe it will take another hot-shooting performance to knock off Georgetown.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Georgetown: Some insiders believe the Hoyas will be highly motivated to prove they have been anything but "lucky" in winning the Big East regular-season title. Louisville head coach Rick Pitino even talked about the "lucky breaks" after his team became the latest victim in a 55-52 loss on Saturday that decided the Big East Tournament's top seed.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big 12 First Round: Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech [ESPN2 | 12:30 PM ET]

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys aren't a great offensive team, but that may not matter on Thursday when they go up against a Texas Tech defense that's given up 87.4 points and 49.5 percent shooting in its last 5 games. Oklahoma State averaged 68 ppg in 2 meetings against the Red Raiders this season.

Oklahoma State is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-4 in Oklahoma State's last 13 games overall.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders have been terrible away from home this season. Texas Tech is just 1-7 on the road in the Big 12, with the 7 losses decided by an average of 23.7 points. Thursday's game will be held at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, which doesn't bode well for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech is 1-3 SU & ATS in its last 4 games overall.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big Ten First Round: Illinois vs. Penn State [ESPN2 | 2:30 PM ET]

Illinois: The Illini are dealing with a number of injuries, including senior forward Brian Randle, who has played the last couple games after recovering from a separated shoulder. Starting guards Chester Frazier (knee) and Trent Meacham (ankle) are also hurting along with reserve Trent Alexander, who suffered a grade-A concussion and caused him to miss Saturday's game against Minnesota. Keep in mind all are listed as probable on the injury report.

Illinois is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in Illinois' last 8 Thursday games.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Penn State: The Nittany Lions won both regular-season meetings with the Illini by a combined 5 points and covered against them in a 66-60 loss during last year's Big Ten Tournament. They are playing with a starting lineup of 4 freshmen due to injuries to their Top 2 scorers and upset Indiana 68-64 in overtime in the regular-season finale.

Underdog is 7-1-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-4 in Penn State's last 13 games vs. Big Ten.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big Ten First Round: Northwestern vs. Minnesota [ESPN2 | 5 PM ET]

Northwestern: The undersized Wildcats have a very difficult matchup here, as they were beaten badly twice by the Golden Gophers during the regular season. Those games were decided by a combined 39 points, with Minnesota shooting 53 and 48 percent from beyond the 3-point arc as well.

Northwestern is 0-3 SU & ATS in its last 3 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Northwestern's last 9 games overall.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Minnesota: Head coach Tubby Smith has not missed the NCAA Tournament in 15 seasons but realizes the only way his Golden Gophers can get in is by winning the Big Ten Tournament. Still, Smith wishes he had more offensive weapons after a freshman led the team in scoring with 14 points against Illinois in a 69-58 loss last Saturday. "When Blake Hoffarber is your leading scorer, you've got issues," Smith said. Dan Coleman leads the Gophers in scoring with 12.2 points per game.

Minnesota is 3-0 SU & ATS in the last 3 meetings.
Minnesota is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games overall.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

ACC First Round: Virginia vs. Georgia Tech [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Virginia: Virginia may be just 15-14 on the season, but the team is playing much better of late. The Cavs have won 4 of their last 6 contests, averaging close to 80 ppg over that span. Virginia is a team no one wants to play heading into the ACC Tournament. "We are definitely playing our best basketball right now but our record doesn't show all the hard work and sacrifice we've put in this season," Cavs senior Sean Singletary said. "I think we are going to make a lot of noise in the tournament."

Virginia is 6-1 STS in its last 7 games overall.
Virginia is 3-11-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Georgia Tech: In their 2 meetings this season, Virginia shot just 14-of-55 from 3-point range against Georgia Tech. It won't get any easier for the Cavs on Thursday. The Rambling Wreck has held opponents to just 21.2 percent from behind the arc over their last 5 games.

Georgia Tech is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
Georgia Tech is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 Thursday games.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Golden State at Phoenix (-5 1/2, 238 1/2)

Critics of the Phoenix Suns' acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal in February argued he wouldn't be able to keep up with their run-and-gun offense.

His last game might start quieting those critics.

After playing an effective 17 minutes in an fast-paced blowout win, O'Neal should be well rested as the Suns host the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night in a matchup of the NBA's highest-scoring teams.

Phoenix (42-22) traded for O'Neal in a blockbuster move on Feb. 6 to try to improve their interior defense and rebounding, especially against teams that play a half-court offense. The 7-foot-1, 325-pound center did just that in the Suns' 94-87 win over San Antonio on Sunday, scoring 14 points with 16 rebounds and two blocked shots while holding the Spurs' Tim Duncan to 6-for-19 shooting.

O'Neal, though, is still trying to show he can be effective in a faster-paced setting - a necessity while playing with the Suns, who are second in the NBA in scoring with 109.6 points per game. He should get a chance to prove himself against the Warriors (40-23), who lead the league with 110.9 points per contest.

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni thinks O'Neal's performance on Tuesday bodes well. Despite scoring only two points, O'Neal had eight rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots as Phoenix recorded its highest point total since the trade, 132-111 win over Memphis.

"He didn't have a point the first half, but I thought he controlled the whole game," D'Antoni said.

More important than O'Neal's individual contributions, the Suns have won back-to-back games for the first time since O'Neal's debut to improve to 5-6 with him in the lineup.

The Suns meet an equally confident Warriors team that has won seven of its last eight games. Currently in eighth place in the crowded Western Conference playoff picture, Golden State trails sixth-place Phoenix by just 1 1/2 games and is only 4 1/2 games behind the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Lakers.

"I've never been involved in something this tight in my career," Warriors point guard Baron Davis said. "This is just a tremendous time to be playing basketball. Every game is an opportunity to move up and see where we can finish."

The Warriors' prospects of moving up are better if Davis can duplicate his performance from Wednesday, when he had 23 points and 15 assists in a 117-106 win over Toronto. Davis had 10 points - including the Warriors' last seven - and six assists in the fourth quarter.

"That's his quarter, and he seems to get it to a different level in the fourth quarter," Warriors coach Don Nelson said of Davis, averaging 27.2 points and shooting 57.0 percent from the field in his last five games. "He's one of those rare guys that can do that."

                      Pick: Warriors

                      Portland at Sacramento (-3 1/2, 206)

Brandon Roy is being asked to become more of a leader for the Portland Trail Blazers. He's already playing that role to a tee against the Sacramento Kings.

After leading the Blazers to a win with an outstanding performance, Roy looks to continue his gritty play against the Kings when the teams meet Thursday night.

Portland (34-31), in 10th place in the Western Conference, is trying to make a playoff push and coach Nate McMillan wants Roy to become more of a take-charge player. Although Roy is only 23 and a second-year pro, that hasn't stopped McMillan from challenging last season's Rookie of the Year.

"He and I talked a little bit ... and just talked about where we are and what he needs to do," McMillan said.

Roy responded Tuesday night, finishing with 27 points and nine assists and playing at his best during a decisive 12-2 run in the fourth quarter as the Blazers beat Minnesota 103-96.

The 6-foot-6 guard is averaging 22.3 points, 6.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from 3-point range in the first four games of a road trip that ends Thursday. Portland has won three of those games.

"He just told me with what I've done my rookie season and so far this season, that this teams needs a leader to start to emerge," Roy said of his talk with his coach. "He said, 'The guys are going to follow you and if you come to the game ready to play, they'll be ready to play. I know it's tough in your second year, but you've got to start preparing now.'"

On Thursday, the obstacle that Roy may have to overcome is Ron Artest, Sacramento's lockdown defender. Artest returned to the Kings' lineup Sunday night after a two-game absence, finishing with 17 points and a game-high four steals in a 114-113 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Artest, who was sidelined with a sore left foot, is hoping Sacramento can play out the stretch with more consistency.

"Wow, we just stepped up against a good team," Artest said. "It's unfortunate we can't step up against the bad teams."

                      Pick: Trail Blazers

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey at Minnesota (-120, 5)

The New Jersey Devils' recent lack of offensive production may wind up costing them the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Minnesota Wild's similar problem may keep them out of the playoffs.

A pair of teams looking to turn around their struggling offenses meet Thursday when New Jersey makes its first trip in more than five years to Minnesota, which is hoping to avoid a fifth straight loss.

The Devils (40-24-6) have scored only 10 goals in their last seven games, going 2-for-23 on the power play. However, thanks to some outstanding goaltending from Martin Brodeur, they've managed to go 3-3-1 in that stretch.

Brodeur has a 1.78 goals-against average in the last five games, dropping his conference-leading season average to 2.14.

"He's been the cornerstone of this team for years," Devils forward John Madden said. "Three Cups, and that's why he's the best in the biz."

The Devils were leading the East standings heading into Tuesday's game at Montreal, but lost 4-0 to allow the Canadiens to overtake them for the top spot. New Jersey also remains in a tight battle with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers for first place in the Atlantic Division.

The one player the Devils have been able to rely on for consistent scoring has been Zach Parise, who leads New Jersey with 30 goals and 60 points. The third-year forward had five of the team's eight goals during its three-game winning streak from March 4-8.

The Wild (37-26-7) have picked a bad time to go into a slump. They're 0-2-2 in their last four and have won just three of their last 11 games, scoring only 20 goals.

Minnesota would make the playoffs if the season ended Wednesday, but is only three points ahead of ninth-place Nashville in the Western Conference.

                        Pick: Devils +100

                        Dallas at Detroit (-170, 5)

Less than two weeks ago, the Dallas Stars were within range of catching the Detroit Red Wings atop the Western Conference. Now they find themselves just trying to regain the lead in their own division.

Dallas will look to move back into first place in the Pacific Division on Thursday when it visits Detroit, which is seeking its fifth straight win but will be without goalie Dominik Hasek.

While the Red Wings floundered, losing 10 of their last 11 games of February, the Stars (42-25-5) were busy finishing off a stretch of 13 wins in 15 games that pulled them to within three points of Detroit (46-18-6).

Dallas, though, lost its first three games of March, and though the Stars snapped the skid with a 3-0 win over Colorado on Sunday, they've fallen one point behind San Jose in the Pacific Division. They're nine points behind the streaking Red Wings.

"Obviously, the standings are tight," Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas said. "We're trying not to look at them and focus on ourselves. But the last three games, we haven't played the kind of hockey we're used to, so tonight was important."

Against the Avalanche, center Brad Richards scored his first goal in a Stars uniform since coming over from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, while Marty Turco had 19 saves for his third shutout of the season.

Dallas led 2-0 after the first period, when it outshot Colorado 12-1.

"The way we played was relentless," Turco said. "We're going to need more of the same."

Turco had lost three straight starts before Sunday, but he's 11-5-0 with a 1.94 goals-against average since the All-Star break - a stretch that includes a 28-save, 1-0 victory over the Red Wings on Feb. 17.

Turco had never beaten Detroit in regulation before that game, having gone 1-8-0 with one tie and a 3.26 GAA in his previous 11 starts against Detroit, the victory coming in a shootout. He hasn't won in nine career starts at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit's goalie situation is somewhat less clear after Hasek left practice early Wednesday with a sore back. He missed six games in February with a hip injury, but was 3-1-0 with a 2.26 GAA since returning.

Hasek hurt his back in a 4-3 win over Nashville on Sunday, and backup Chris Osgood stopped 19 shots in a 3-1 win over Chicago on Tuesday.

Hasek said he hopes to be back by the weekend, but the Red Wings will try to secure their eighth consecutive 100-point season with Osgood in net. They have 98 points entering Thursday - eight ahead of the Sharks for the NHL lead.

                        Pick: Over

                        Vancouver at Phoenix (-125, 5 1/2)

The Canucks had a chance to move into a tie atop the division Wednesday, but fell 4-1 at reigning Stanley Cup champion Anaheim to halt their three-game winning streak, during which they scored 12 goals.

"I think it was more of a change of pace than anything else," said Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, who was pulled at 4:03 of the second period after giving up four goals on 19 shots. "The good thing is we play (Thursday) night, right away. So we have a chance to put it behind us right away and focus for tomorrow night's game - which is obviously a huge game for us."

The Coyotes start play 10th in the West, five points back of Vancouver in the playoff chase and hoping to carry some momentum from a 3-2 shootout win over the Ducks on Tuesday. Phoenix rallied from a two-goal, second-period deficit and Radim Vrbata netted the lone shootout goal as the Coyotes improved to 1-2-0 on their five-game homestand.

"This was a huge game and we needed to find a way to get two points," said Coyotes captain Shane Doan, who spurred the comeback with a goal in the second. "When we were down, everyone on the bench was relaxed. We knew how important this game was to us and had to somehow get back in the game."

                        Pick: Phoenix
