Six top minor league prospects of the Florida Marlins

    5) Sean West, P-- 6-8 hurler missed LY after surgery for torn labrum; won't be 22 years old until June.

    4) Ryan Tucker, P-- Throws hard, has floundered as starter, is seen as closer by some. Suspended for part of last season after disagreement with pitching coach.

    3) Brett Sinkbeil, P-- 9-5, 3.52 in pair of minor league seasons; pitched at Missouri State. Another Florida prospect who has been hampered by injuries.

    2) Chris Volstad, P-- Signed for $1.6M out of high school; in first AA action, was 4-2, 3.16 in seven starts. Is 6-7; has shot at being with Marlins before end of season.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

      13) Interesting timing by Arizona in announcing return to the bench next year for Lute Olson, whose team is falling apart at end of his season away from the team. Almost like an effort to jumpstart a team that has looked low on energy recently.

      12) Isaac Bruce wore #80 for the Rams; now he is a 49er, and would like to wear #80 there, but Jerry Rice wore that number for the Rams' arch-rival. Oddly, 49ers haven't retired #80, so it makes sense that Bruce can wear it, and Rice has approved it, not that anyone with the 49ers asked him. Biggest question is why San Francisco hasn't retired Rice's number yet?

      11) A's have a new trainer this season; they used DL 22 times in 2007, with players missing a total of 1,259 games. Ouch.

      10) People keep saying how Kentucky had two horrible losses in pre-conference play, Gardner-Webb and San Diego, but all of a sudden, that San Diego loss doesn't look so terrible, with Toreros winning WCC tournament Monday night.

      9) Word is coming out that Mark Bremer, the ringleader of the prostitution ring that Eliot Spitzer utilized, is an enrolled agent with the IRS. As if this whole ordeal wasn't taxing enough.

      8) Stock market went up 417 points Tuesday, its best day since July 2002, and 4th-biggest single day gain ever.

      7) Bubble teams were relieved to see Butler win its conference tournament; had Cleveland State won, another spot would've disappeared for those teams holding their breath this week.

      6) Northern Arizona-Portland State will be the only conference final Wednesday, out in Big Sky Conference. Vikings won their last 13 conference games; they're facing team that lost final in this conference the last two seasons.

      5) How many Suttons are there? Oral Roberts won Summit title, could it be possible that young Sutton follows his father out to San Francisco, where Eddie was interim coach this season?

      4) Atlanta Hawks are 26-36, but would make playoffs if regular season ended today; would the NBA consider going to a 1-16 seeding system, regardless of geography? Probably not.

      3) Someone has to explain to me how Isiah Thomas is still the coach of the Knicks; if Republicans impeach Governor Spitzer, can't they impeach Isiah at the same time?

      2) Speaking of employment, if Spitzer is no longer governor, it is going to be real expensive to get his name off signs all over the Empire State, not to mention stationery and stuff like that; I wonder what total cost of all those changes would be?

      1) I am even more curious about what exactly a young woman has to do to earn $4,300 for two hours of "company"?

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big East First Round: Syracuse vs. Villanova [ESPN | 12 PM ET]

Syracuse (-2, O/U 148): The Orange believe they have another size advantage here after taking advantage of their height in an 87-72 win over Marquette on Saturday. They outrebounded Villanova 33-18 in the last meeting, an 87-73 road win back on February 2nd.

Syracuse has won 2 straight both SU & ATS after going 1-5 SU & ATS in its previous 6.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Syracuse's last 8 Wednesday games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 74 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Villanova: Like Syracuse, the Wildcats finished the regular season strong with 2 big wins though neither came against good opponents. They have enjoyed success defensively in their last 10 games, going 6-3 SU & ATS with the UNDER going 8-1 during that stretch.

Villanova is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-1 in Villanova's last 10 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 70

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big East First Round: Providence vs. West Virginia [ESPN | 2 PM ET]

Providence: Insiders remain concerned with the Friars, who looked deflated against Villanova in their home finale after completing a sweep of UConn last Thursday. Head coach Tim Welsh is rumored to be on his way out, and his players played all out against the Huskies. Whether or not they can duplicate that performance again at Madison Square Garden remains to be seen, especially since they were just 1-5 in their last 6 games away from home.

Providence is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 10-3 in Providence's last 13 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries - G Dwain Williams (ankle) is out for the season.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 65

West Virginia (-8, O/U 139): The Mountaineers swept the season series with Providence by a combined 39 points and held the Friars more than 10 points below their season average combined in the pair of wins. They have also played on the second day each of the last 3 years.

West Virginia is 5-0-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

The OVER is 9-4-1 in West Virginia's last 14 neutral site games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 76

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big East First Round: Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Cincinnati: The Bearcats know they can play with Pitt, as the covered both meetings this season. They beat the Panthers 62-59 at home back on January 19th and will be motivated to prove their loss at UConn on Sunday was a fluke due to travel complications caused by a snowstorm.

Cincinnati is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games, going 1-4 ATS.
Cincinnati is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 Wednesday games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 61

Pittsburgh (-8.5, O/U 129.5): The Panthers saved their best offensive performance in Big East play for their regular-season finale, rebounding from a loss to West Virginia with a 98-79 rout of DePaul. One key concern is the shooting of point guard Levance Fields, who many think came back too soon from a broken foot. Fields nearly had a triple double against the Blue Demons, but he has shot less than 36 percent from the field in 6 of 7 games since his return.

Pitt is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 Wednesday games.

Big East First Round: Seton Hall vs. #24 Marquette [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Seton Hall: Many insiders believe the Pirates have given up on the season in failing to cover 6 of their last 7 games. They have not beaten a quality opponent since surprising Louisville 92-82 back on January 19th, and there are concerns that they will get blown out of Madison Square Garden if they try to run with Marquette just like they did in an 89-64 home loss in the last meeting on February 12th.

Seton Hall is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

Marquette (-10.5, O/U 149.5): The Golden Eagles dropped their last 2 games in Big East play, but that followed a 5-game winning streak that saw them go 5-0 ATS. They started that winning streak against Seton Hall after a previous 2-game skid and have a major edge defensively, forcing an average of 21.5 turnovers in their last 6 games.

Marquette is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 19-7 in Marquette's last 26 neutral site games.

                          Philadelphia at Detroit (-9, 192)

The Detroit Pistons are back in the playoffs, but with plenty of time left until the postseason begins, they're hoping to build some momentum during a demanding stretch of games.

The Pistons will be trying to continue their recent dominance of the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday when the teams meet at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Detroit (46-17) clinched its seventh straight trip to the playoffs with Sunday's 116-109 victory over Chicago. The win was the seventh in nine games for the Central Division-leading Pistons, who opened a five-game homestand.

Following this matchup with the surging 76ers (30-34), Detroit hosts San Antonio, New Orleans and Denver. The Spurs lead the Southwest Division and are 1 1/2 games ahead of the Hornets, while the Nuggets are in ninth place in the competitive Western Conference.

"It's good to be home, especially for a stretch," said Chauncey Billups, who matched his season-high with 34 points Sunday. "We can start getting some games under our belt at home and have some good teams coming in where we know we've got to be on guard. We can't have letdowns. I look forward to this stretch."

If recent history is any indication, the Pistons - 24-5 at home - have a good shot at their fourth straight win on their own court. Detroit has won 13 of its last 15 games against the 76ers and six of seven at home in the series.

However, the Sixers, who are in seventh place in the East, have won 12 of their last 16 games as they battle for their first playoff berth since 2004-05.

                          Pick: 76ers

                          Houston at Atlanta (+5, 197)

The Houston Rockets have joined some exclusive company as they've pushed their winning streak to 19 games, yet Tracy McGrady insists it has no real significance if it's not followed by an extended postseason run.

If history is any indication, the Rockets should be headed for one.

Houston (43-20) looks to become just the third team to win 20 consecutive games when it visits the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.

The three other teams in NBA history that won at least 19 in a row - the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks and the 1999-2000 Lakers - all went on to win the championship that season.

On Monday, the Rockets tied that most recent Lakers team with their 19th victory in a row, knocking off New Jersey 91-73 at home. They'll match the '70-'71 Bucks, a team that featured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson, if they can beat the Hawks (26-37).

"It's impressive, and we keep adding on games,'' said guard Rafer Alston, who's averaging 15.3 points and 6.8 assists during the streak. "It's fantastic to have your name mentioned and your team mentioned with some of the best teams, some of the best players to ever play the game. It says a lot about our ballclub."

Houston has won its last 10 games by double digits, and on Wednesday can establish a record for consecutive wins by 10 points or more.

Outside the playoff picture just a month ago, the Rockets now find themselves trailing only the Lakers and San Antonio in the race for the top spot in the Western Conference.

"I told them (Monday) they have a double whammy going,'' coach Rick Adelman said. "Not only do you have a chance to do something remarkable and get this streak going and keep it going, but also, every time you win, you keep shortening the season and you keep that lead that you have over other people and you're moving up the standings."

                          Pick: Rockets

Cleveland at New Jersey (-4, 188)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been able to weather injuries, mostly because LeBron James is a triple-double threat in every game. That type of all-around play is what the slumping New Jersey Nets miss most since trading Jason Kidd.

After another sparkling performance from James, the Cavaliers look to end their struggles in New Jersey when they face the punchless Nets on Wednesday night.

James tallied his seventh triple-double of the season Monday night, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in Cleveland's 88-80 win over Portland.

It was the third-triple double in 12 games for James, who has 17 for his career.

"It's scary, it really is," Cavaliers swingman Wally Szczerbiak said. "It's pretty special being on this team and seeing him day in and day out. Being able to watch it, the fans are probably watching the best basketball player in the world. It's arguable between him and Kobe (Bryant), and I'm going to argue for him every day."

James had 29 points, eight assists and six rebounds against the Nets (26-38) on Dec. 14, but the Cavaliers (37-27) lost 105-97. It was Cleveland's 10th loss in its last 11 games in New Jersey.

The Cavaliers have lost their two games against the Nets this season, the first of which was played in Cleveland. But James missed that contest due to a sprained left index finger, and New Jersey has been sinking in the Eastern Conference standings since trading Kidd to Dallas.

The Nets were in playoff position before dealing Kidd, but have lost nine of 12 since and are now one-half game behind Atlanta for the eighth postseason spot. New Jersey has lost six straight, averaging 84.3 points while shooting 39.5 percent from the field in that span.

                          Pick: Cavs

                            Toronto vs. Philadelphia (-150, 5.5)

This game could get dirty tonight. The Leafs and Flyers met last night in T.O. and the Flyers won't be happy about blowing a 2-0 third-period lead to lose the game 4-3 in OT.

So there should be some penalties, like many other Philly games this season. That means the Flyers have five power play goals over their last two games while the Leafs have six over their last three games.

Toronto has also changed its game plan to "just shoot it" in an attempt to generate some consistent production. The Buds rifled 55 shots at Martin Biron last night.

                            Pick: over 5 1/2

                            Carolina vs. Chicago (-115, 6)

This could be a letdown spot for struggling Chicago. The Blackhawks put out a tough effort in Detroit last night in a 3-1 loss, a divisional opponent they always seem to get up for.

Chicago now enters this game on a three-game losing streak, playing on back-to-back nights with a growing list of injuries. Marty Havlat, Yannick Perreault, Brent Sopel and starting goalie Nikolai Khabibulin are all out.

There is a bright spot here though and his name is Corey Crawford. This rookie looked so good kicking out 44 pucks last night, it was easy to mistake him for the Khabibulin of old. You know, the good one. Crawford has only appeared in four games but he has a .938 save percentage and 1.83 goals against average.

If he gets the start tonight, look hard at the under.

                            Pick: Hurricanes +100
