    6) Jordan Brown, 1B- Played college ball at Arizona, hit .333 in full season in Eastern League, an impressive feat.

    5) Nick Weglarz, OF- Canadian high schooler had huge year in South Atlantic League LY, after two disappointing years in minors, where injuries held him back. Doesn't run well.

    4) Wes Hodges, 3B-- Georgia Tech product once played thru stress fracture in his leg, so he is tough. Hit .288 with 15 HRs in his first pro season.

    3) Beau Mills, 3B/1B-- Son of Red Sox coach Brad Mills, he had behavioral issues at Fresno State, transferred to NAIA school, did well enough to rate a $1.5M signing bonus.

    2) Chuck Lofgren, P-- Was 12-7 in Eastern League LY, but batters hit .270 against him, a little high.

    1) Adam Miller, P-- Has been dominant when healthy, but it is health that has often held him back.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Sunday

      13) This will be the longest of weeks for anyone connected to the Virginia Commonwealth basketball program, after Rams got KO'd in CAA tourney by upstart William & Mary. Losing in a semifinal game in a mid-major makes your case very shaky, but VCU does have wins vs Maryland, Bradley, Houston, Akron.

      12) Game of Day was certainly VCU's 56-54 loss to William and Mary, as Tribe wins a tight game for third day in row. Finals in CAA tourney have George Mason trying to end Cinderella run of William & Mary- it won't be easy.

      11) Drake's magical season continued with their winning MVC title, first time in 10 years the top seed won this event. Illinois State is another team on pins and needles this coming week.

      10) Clemson could be good sleeper in NCAAs; they're starting to play well at end of these close games, as they pulled out a 70-69 home win vs Virginia Tech, a game they would have lost in other seasons. They just seem to have more presence now.

      9) Indiana lost at Penn State; Eric Gordon was 8-24 from floor with Pat Riley in the house. Hoosiers are looking like ballclub that might be looking for the end of the road to come soon.

      8) Ohio State upset Michigan State at home Sunday; now they teams will play again Friday, in Big 11 tourney. Michigan State is totally inconsistent; you just don't know with them.

      7) #7 seed Elon is in finals of Southern Conference, where they will try to upset 22-0 Davidson; good luck. Wildcats won their first two tournament games by 33-30 points.

      6) Winner of Northeast Conference is headed to play-in game in Dayton, since Robert Morris and Wagner, the 1-2 seeds, got bounced in semifinals Sunday.

      5) Former Virginia coach Jeff Jones will be a heavy favorite to get into NCAAs when his American Eagles host Colgate in the Patriot League finals Friday afternoon.

      4) Cincinnati got snowed in Friday, so their game at UConn got pushed back to Sunday; Bearcats then played like they wished they were still shoveling snow, trailing 47-15 at halftime in just an awful 96-51 loss to the Huskies in the Nutmeg State.

      3) The gym at U of San Diego is the Jenny Craig Pavilion; think they serve junk food there, or that crummy healthy stuff?

      2) WCC is moving its conference tournament to Las Vegas for next year, a brilliant move, eliminating home court from the mix, and giving all the fans a great reason to go to the tourney.

      1) How bitter must Loyola MD be? They beat Siena twice this season, but still had to play at Siena in conference tourney, where went up 16 in the first half, 10 at halftime, but lost 65-63, even though Saints were a dismal 9-20 from line. Worse yet is that Rider is in MAAC finals, despite being short two starters.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            NBA Gameday
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Dirk Nowitzki, and Tim Duncan will all be in action on Monday night as their league begins a brand new week. Here is your NBA Gameday …

Portland Trail Blazers at Cleveland Cavaliers, 7:00pm ET

The Blazers have fallen out of playoff contention in the Western Conference, but they still managed to pick up back-to-back wins over the Bucks and Knicks over the weekend. Brandon Roy poured in 27 points in Portland's 120-114 OT win over New York on Saturday night, while LaMarcus Aldridge picked up 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers have moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with seven wins in their past 10 games. Cleveland is coming off a 103-95 win over Indiana on Saturday night, with LeBron James netting a game-high 38 points in that contest. Anderson Varejao added 15 points on the night, while Delonte West scored 14 points.

Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic, 7:00pm ET

The Hawks snapped a losing streak on Saturday night by beating the Heat - twice. Atlanta held off Miami in the replay of their disputed game from earlier in the season, and then won the scheduled contest 97-94. Joe Johnson led the way for the Hawks in the nightcap with 39 points and eight assists, while Josh Smith was good for 13 points.

Orlando had a winning streak snapped on Saturday, as they fell 104-95 to the Warriors. The Magic had started the month of March with consecutive wins over the Knicks, Raptors, and Wizards. Dwight Howard scored 26 points and picked up 12 rebounds for Orlando in their loss to Golden State, while Hedo Turkoglu contributed with 23 points.

New York Knicks at Dallas Mavericks, 8:30pm ET

The Knicks have lost each of their past six games heading into Monday night's matchup with the Mavericks. New York fell to the Pistons on Friday night before losing to the Trail Blazers on Saturday. Nate Robinson exploded for 45 points for the Knicks against Portland, while Quentin Richardson was good for 20 points and five assists that night.

Dallas is now mired in fourth place in the Southwest Division standings, and they're not comfortably in a playoff position in the conference. The Mavericks began March with losses to the Lakers, Jazz, and Rockets before getting past the Nets 111-91 on Saturday. Dirk Nowitzki had 34 points in that victory, and Jerry Stackhouse scored 20.

Denver Nuggets at San Antonio Spurs, 8:30pm ET

The Nuggets had their modest two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday night when they fell 132-105 to the Jazz. Denver lost ground in the Northwest Division race with that loss, and they remained outside the West's Top 8. Allen Iverson poured in a team-high 28 points for Denver in their Saturday loss, and Carmelo Anthony scored 24.

San Antonio has managed to stay just ahead of the red-hot Rockets in the Southwest Division standings by going on a hot streak of their own over the past few weeks. However, the Spurs did fall 109-96 to the Nuggets on Friday night to lose a bit of ground in that race. Manu Ginobili scored 24 points in that loss, and Tim Duncan had 23 points.

                Monday's tournament games

                Colonial Tournament
William & Mary is playing for fourth day in row, winning tight games vs Georgia State (58-57), ODU (63-60), VCU (56-54)- this is team running on adrenaline. George Mason beat Tribe 60-54 Feb 27 (-13); they were 16-24 from line, W&M 4-6. Mason held first two foes in this event to 36-28%, so they're defending well and they have guys who have been down this road before.

                MAAC Tournament
Rider crushed Siena here 89-75 Feb 2 (it was 59-34 at half), then lost at home to Saints 80-77, eight days later; Broncs won last five games, scoring 80 ppg, but they're depleted at guard, with freshman PG Griffin playing eight more minutes last night than he ever had before. Siena was down 16 in first half yesterday, beat Loyola for first time in three tries; they're 3-7 as a HF.

                Sun Belt Tournament
South Alabama covered seven of its last nine games; they won five in row, eight of last nine games. Home side won both tilts between South Alabama-Middle Tennessee, with Jags losing 76-70 at MTSU Feb 14 (-6), one of only two Sun Belt losses for them. Raiders won first two tourney games by 6-5 points; they covered six of their last seven games as the underdog.

Ark-Little Rock won last five games, allowing just 55 ppg; they lost 71-47 at Western Kentucky Jan 31 (+13), in game Trojans led 27-25 at half. Huge game for Hilltopper squad that is on the bubble; getting to a final vs USA might get them in. Western is on four-game win streak, covered last three tries as a favorite. First time in 11 years these teams met in Sun Belt tournament.

                WCC Tournament
Gonzaga won last eight games; they've won this tournament in eight of last nine years, last four in row, last losing in this gym to San Diego five years ago. Zags beat San Diego here Feb 18 59-55 (-7.5), holding Toreros to 34% from floor, 80-70 at home Jan 19, when they shot 56% on night. USD coach Grier was a Gonzaga assistant for 16 years. Late game last night went to double OT; question is whether San Diego emptied the tank in major comeback last night (trailed by 17 at one point).

                Southern Conference Tournament
Davidson is 22-0 in Southern Conference, but lot of pressure on them here, since no guarantee they get in NCAAs should they stumble here. Elon is 7-2 in last nine games, with pair of OT wins; they held first three tourney foes to 23-35-41% from floor- they're a #7 seed playing with lot of heart, and they did OK vs Davidson this year, losing 59-57 at home (they were 8 for 15 frrom foul line), 74-64 on road. Keep in mind that Elon lost to a team named Tusculum this year, and now is one more upset away from being in Field of 65.

Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver at San Antonio (-7, 204)

The Spurs (43-19), owners of the fourth-best home record in the NBA at 26-5, lead the Southwest by one game over red-hot Houston and New Orleans. The Rockets are going for their 19th consecutive win against New Jersey - losers of five straight - on Monday, while the Hornets are idle.

San Antonio will try to avoid matching a season-high three-game slide after falling 94-87 at Phoenix on Sunday. The Spurs squandered a five-point lead with 3:40 to play.

"I had two turnovers and two missed layups down the stretch," said the Spurs' Tim Duncan, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. "We're up five with three-something left-a situation where we usually play a lot better than that."

Sunday's defeat came two nights after a 109-96 loss at Denver (37-25), which ended San Antonio's 11-game run. The Spurs have dropped two of three to the Nuggets this season, and have not lost a season series to them since 1987-88.

San Antonio, which is seeking a sixth consecutive win at the AT&T Center, has alternated wins with Denver in the last six home meetings, including a 102-91 victory on Dec. 15.

The Spurs hope Manu Ginobili, the team-leader with 20.7 points per game, can help snap that trend. He had 22 points Sunday after putting up 24 against the Nuggets. The guard is also averaging 25.8 points on 52.6 percent shooting (110-for-209) over the last 13 games.

The Nuggets, losers of five of their last six road games, are looking to close the two-game gap on idle Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference after losing 132-105 at Utah on Saturday.

                        Pick: Spurs

                        Boston at Philadelphia (+6, 195)

Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have been leading Boston (49-12) through a special season. The Celtics have already clinched their first playoff berth since 2005, and after going 24-58 last season, is in position for its first 50-win season since 1991-92 (51-31).

The Celtics cruised to their eighth straight win, 119-89 over Memphis on Saturday. Allen scored 23 points, Pierce added 19 and Garnett chipped in with 17 and became the 32nd player in NBA history with 20,000 career points.

"It's a bit more meaningful being a Celtic when it happened and it seems like things are lining up for something more beautiful, like a championship," said Garnett, who never won a NBA title in 12 seasons with Minnesota.

Boston's defense has tightened up recently, holding opponents to an average of 89.0 points in its last three road games after allowing 109.3 in the previous three. The Celtics have won three straight road games by an average of 22.7 points since dropping a season-high three straight on the road, and their offense has been red-hot against the 76ers this season.

In its 113-103 win at Philadelphia on Dec. 5, Boston shot 52.6 percent from the field and made 10-of-22 3-pointers. In their 116-89 home win on Jan. 18, the Celtics shot 58.9 percent and connected on 14-of-22 shots from beyond the arc.

Pierce has 41 points and 15 assists in two games against the Sixers this season, while Allen has scored 35 points on 7-of-15 shooting from 3-point range in those contests. Garnett is averaging 16.5 points and 6.5 boards in the two games versus Philadelphia.

Boston has not won two games in Philadelphia in a single season since 1995-96.

The Sixers have playing at an extremely high level at the Wachovia Center lately, though, winning their last eight home games by an average of 18.9 points since a 108-106 loss to Southeast Division-leading Orlando on Feb. 1.

Philadelphia has not won nine straight home games since opening the 2002-03 season with 10 straight wins there.

                        Pick: 76ers

                        Portland at Cleveland (-6, 191.5)

With a flare for late-game heroics and having led the Cleveland Cavaliers to one of the best records in the Eastern Conference, LeBron James is a favorite to win the MVP award this season.

On Saturday, James scored 18 points in the third quarter as Cleveland extended its lead to 21. The 2008 All-Star game MVP finished with 38 points and 11 rebounds, and went 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

"The first five minutes in the third quarter is key, so I wanted to try to make sure we came out aggressive," James said. "I came out aggressive and started knocking down shots. Once I get into a zone like that, it's tough to try to stop me from what I want to do."

The 23-year-old superstar has been in that zone throughout his team's four March games. James is averaging 41.0 points - 10.1 better than his league-best scoring average - and has gone 14-of-34 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc this month.

"He's been making them lately from all angles and all ranges,'' said forward Joe Smith, acquired by Cleveland just before the trade deadline. "I'm still getting used to it because you just don't see it. I just stand there and say, 'Wow.'''

Smith was not with the Cavs for James' last performance against Portland (33-30), but he almost certainly would have had a similar reaction.

In Cleveland's 84-83 win over the Trail Blazers on Jan. 30, James scored 17 points in the fourth quarter - two more than the entire Portland team - and his reverse layup with 0.9 seconds left gave the Cavs the win. He finished with 37 points and 14 rebounds.

                        Pick: Cavaliers

New York Rangers vs. Buffalo (-110, 5.5)

The Rangers' 1-0 shootout victory over Boston may sound like a bit of a stinker if you like high scoring games. But it was actually an exciting hockey game in which the goalies stole the show.

New York blasted 35 shots on Boston's Alexander Auld and Henrik Lundqvist earned his donut with 29 saves. Lundqvist has allowed just one goal in his last two games now and it looks as if the netminder is moving into playoff mode.

The Rangers are too. They're playing tough defensively as a team with forwards taking care of their own end of the rink first. Odd-man rushes have been limited and they're playing gritty hockey. Even Chris Drury fought on Sunday when he came to the aid of Marik Molik after he took a hard, blind-sided hit.

                          Pick: under

Vancouver vs. Los Angeles (+130, 5.5)

It's tough when you lose all of the first three meetings against any team. It's especially brutal when that team happens to be the worst one in the league.

That's the situation for the Canucks, who haven't even been able to take the lowly Kings to overtime in three losses this season.

This could be the night Vancouver's luck gets turned around. L.A. has lost six of its last seven games and hasn't scored more than two goals in any of its last five contests. Vancouver comes in on a two-game winning streak and the Canucks are desperate. They cling to last playoff spot in the west along with Nashville, who also has 78 points.

                          Pick: Vancouver -150
