                  Six-pack for Sunday

-- We had thunderstorm here around 1:00 Saturday; tried to remember watching college hoop during T-storm before, but couldn't do it. Very weird weather, lot of rain here in Albany.

-- Rockets won their 18th straight game Saturday, winning sixth in row without Yao Ming, proving how important it is to have depth in a marathon-like NBA season.

-- Flipping channels Saturday afternoon; first inning of the Tampa-Bronx game was scoreless, but was 45 minutes long. Mike Mussina was in midseason form, glaring at plate ump.

-- Tampa's David Price, first pick in LY's draft, hit 99 mph on radar gun, struck out three of four batters he faced in his pro debut later in that same game against Bronx.

-- Todd Linden is hitting .692 as he tries to earn job with the A's this season- he has .231 career BA in part-time duty for Giants, Marlins over last several seasons. You just don't see lot of guys who are hitting .692.

-- It snowed in Atlanta Saturday, cancelling qualifying for the NASCAR race Sunday; I'm guessing they don't see lot of snow in March on Peachtree Street.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up busy college hoop day, the first day of Championship Week.........

                    13) UCLA trailed for 77 of 80 minutes in regulation in their two games this weekend, but won both, in no small part because of incompetent officiating in both games. It helps to be home.

                    12) Thursday, a poor foul call on Stanford's Hill allowed UCLA to tie game, then yesterday, a series of seemingly obvious calls went against Cal in last 0:30, allowing Bruins to escape with a win they didn't really deserve. How three refs could miss a kid shooting from behind the backboard is hard to figure out.

                    11) West Virginia is supposedly a bubble team, so their escape from New York was huge; they trailed by hoop with :04 left to play, but got length of court drive/layup to tie game, then won 83-74 in OT. For game, visiting Mountaineers were 30-42 from foul line, host Johnnies were 7-18.

                    10) Memphis barely escaped UAB with win, so they went out ande crushed Blazers 94-56 in rematch- it was 48-20 at the half.

                    9) Rice and Colorado State finished 0-16 in their leagues, while Oregon State went 0-18 in Pac-10, 0-9 vs spread as home dog.

                    8) Tyler HanXXXough leads ACC in free throws tried, but didn't take a foul shot at Cameron Indoor Saturday night. Funny how that works. Hard to imagine he played whole game without one time getting fouled in act of shooting.

                    7) Funny thing, Kevin Durant's older brother is still in college, a pretty good player for Towson State.

                    6) Arizona's Chase Budinger summed up second half of season for Wildcats when he barfed on court during Arizona-Oregon tilt in Eugene. Arizona finishes 8-10, is in Pac-10 tournament play-in game, which is not good news for Kevin O'Neill and his hopes for coaching the Wildcats down the road.

                    5) Kansas ('89) is last defending NCAA champ to miss tourney in next season; last time both teams who played in title game missed out on tourney next year was 1980, when Indiana State, Michigan State both stayed home, when NCAAs was smaller.

                    4) Four teams (Boise, Utah State, New Mexico State, Nevada) all finished tied for first in WAC which could make for a super semi-finals/finals in Las Cruces next weekend.

                    3) Not only is Davidson 21-0 in Southern Conference, but both #2-3 seeds in tourney are already out, as Elon-Charleston is a surprising 6-7 semi-final matchup on other side of bracket.

                    2) How would you like to be Loyola MD, which beat Siena in both meetings this season, but to make it MAAC finals, has to win for a second time on Siena's home court?

                    1) Washington State beat Washington in double OT Saturday, first time ever Coogs won seven in row against Washington.
