    Weekend Sports Preview

The weekend sports schedule is full again over the next three days with NBA, college hoops, NHL, AFL and NASCAR all fighting for attention.

The NBA gets the weekend started with a busy Friday night that includes 12 games. Highlighting the jam-packed schedule is San Antonio at Denver, Utah at Phoenix, Chicago at Boston, Washington at Toronto and New Jersey at Orlando. The rest of Friday night’s games include Atlanta at Charlotte, Seattle at Philadelphia, Detroit at New York, Golden State at Miami, Portland at Milwaukee, the Clippers at the Lakers, and Minnesota at Sacramento.

Saturday’s NBA schedule is also a busy one, with 10 games on tap. This includes key Western Conference battles between New Orleans and Houston as well as Denver and Utah. Also on tap for Saturday is Indiana at Cleveland, Miami at Atlanta, Charlotte at Washington, Golden State at Orlando, Portland at New York, Boston at Memphis, New Jersey at Dallas and Minnesota at the Clippers.

Five more hardcourt contests follow in the NBA on Sunday, including two top-notch matchups between San Antonio and Phoenix and Chicago and Detroit. The rest of the Sunday schedule includes Philadelphia at Milwaukee, Seattle at Toronto and Sacramento at the Lakers.

In college hoops this weekend the entire Top 10 will be in action. On Saturday No. 1 North Carolina faces No. 6 Duke in a huge ACC matchup. Also on Saturday is UAB at No. 2 Memphis, No. 7 Stanford at USC, No. 10 Wisconsin at Northwestern, California at No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Kansas at Texas A&M and Richmond at No. 8 Xavier.

The two Top 10 games scheduled for Sunday include South Carolina at No. 4 Tennessee and Oklahoma at No. 9 Texas.

In the NHL on Friday night there are five games, as Tampa Bay takes on New Jersey, Edmonton travels to Columbus, Minnesota faces Atlanta, San Jose plays Chicago and Nashville takes on Calgary.

Nine NHL games follow on Saturday night, starting with Washington at Boston, Dallas at Colorado, Montreal at Los Angeles, Buffalo at Carolina and the Islanders at Philadelphia. The rest of the Saturday games include New Jersey at Toronto, Ottawa at Phoenix, Atlanta at Florida and St. Louis at Vancouver.

Sunday is an unusually busy day on the ice with eight games on the schedule. This includes Ovechkin vs. Crosby when Pittsburgh takes on Washington, and a pair of potential playoff previews when San Jose visits Minnesota and Colorado plays Dallas. The rest of the Sunday games include Edmonton at Chicago, Nashville at Detroit, Boston at the Rangers, Tampa Bay at Columbus and Montreal at Anaheim.

Week 2 in the AFL kicks off on Friday night with a pair of games, as Georgia faces Tampa Bay and Columbus takes on Dallas.

The AFL takes Saturday off before returning with four games on Sunday. The Sunday contests include Utah at Cleveland, Philadelphia at Chicago, Kansas City at New York and Orlando at New Orleans.

The Sprint Cup Series returns to the track on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Kobalt Tools 500. Carl Edwards won his second race in a row in Las Vegas last week, but took a 100-point hit after failing the post-race inspection. Jimmie Johnson won at Atlanta last season, but has started this year off slowly with only one Top 20 finish so far.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here.......

      13) Hot rumor all over internet has Bill Cowher being courted as the successor to Joe Paterno at Penn State; maybe then the Nittany Lions could get a logo on at least one side of their helmets. My friend Joe says no way, but you never know.....

      12) Rams are recruiting Trent Green to be their #2 QB next year; I am guessing ESPN might be their main competition, since the well-spoken Green seems a natural in front of the camera.

      11) With the NCAA tournament only two weeks away, would it be too much to ask for Indiana-UAB matchup? Mike Davis against the school that dumped him, then replaced him with a cheater? Plus, Robert Vaden transferred from IU to UAB.

      10) Wisconsin Badgers defend well without fouling; in their last three games, opponents scored 45.3 pg, and took total of only 18 foul shots, while making a dismal 12-52 from the arc (23.1%). They're a very underrated program.

      9) Before this season, the last time Drake was ranked was 1975. Adam Emmenecker is POY in MVC; he scored 4.3 pg his senior year in high school, never scoring more than 12 points. Before this year, his senior year, he had started two college games.

      8) Not only did Bucknell stun #2 seed Navy in triple OT in first round of Patriot League tourney, they did it on 40-footer at the buzzer by John Griffin, son of the former Siena/St Joe’s coach.

      7) Former Phoenix Sun Kevin Johnson, now 42, is running for mayor of Sacramento, against three-time incumbent; capital of California is suffering thru a real estate slump, which is hurting the city’s economy, so the incumbent could be vulnerable.

      6) Some nitwit on ESPN Thursday suggested that the Rockets are better off without Yao Ming, since they won three in row since he got hurt. They forget the 13 in row they won with him in there. Some people just like saying stupid things on TV.

      5) Providence beat UConn twice this season, but is 4-11 vs the rest of the Big East; the win gives them leg up on making Big East tournament (only top 12 make it) because DePaul got win at Cincinnati, keeping pace with the Friars.

      4) How do Red Sox justify paying its closer Jonathan Papelbon only $775,000? A guy that important to their success shouldn't make at least a million or two? Hell, they pay JD Drew $14M.

      3) Jon Gruden actually caddied seven holes for John Daly in first round of PGA tournament in Tampa Thursday, before the round was suspended by darkness. Not surprisingly, the two met up in a Hooters hospitality tent by 11th hole during a rain delay, where they agreed to let Gruden caddy for rest of round.

      2) Texas A&M went 16:20, (16 minutes, 20 seconds), of game time without scoring a point at Oklahoma last Saturday, which is thought to be the longest scoring drought of the shotclock era. Aggies are offensively challenged, a weird team that won its next game at Baylor.

      1) 202 quarterbacks started at least one NFL game during Brett Favre’s 16-year run in Green Bay; 21 of those started at least one game for the Bears. Tough shoes to fill for Aaron Rodgers.

              Friday, March 7

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at Toronto Raptors [7 PM ET]

Wizards: Andray Blatche (7.5 ppg) has struggled a bit since getting benched in favor of Darius Songalia as the team attempts to replace Caron Butler in the starting lineup. In Washington's 2 losses since the change was made, Blatche has made 3-of-23 shots from the field (13 percent), scoring 8 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

Wizards are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games.
Wizards are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall.

Raptors: In the last meeting with Washington, Toronto found out an hour before the game that Butler would not play and seemed to underestimate the Wizards before losing in overtime. Insiders believe head coach Sam Mitchell will have the Raptors ready for what has become a revenge game.

Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 9-0 in the last 9 meetings.

F Chris Bosh (23 ppg; knee) is out. Raptors are 3-6 ATS without him this season.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks [7:30PM]

Pistons: With the Celtics winning the last meeting with Detroit on Wednesday, insiders expect head coach Flip Saunders to increase playing time for the team's reserves. Theo Ratliff and Juan Dixon have recently been added to the team and should see more minutes down the stretch to rest starters.

Pistons are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Friday games.
Pistons are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 vs. Atlantic Division.

F Rasheed Wallace (13 ppg; ankle) is probable. Pistons are 1-2 ATS without him this season.

Knicks: Injured point guard Stephon Marbury made his first appearance at Madison Square Garden since undergoing ankle surgery back on January 22nd. Marbury was reportedly banned from the premises, and his relationship with head coach Isiah Thomas appears to be over.

Knicks are 0-4 SU in their last 4 games, failing to cover their last 3.

F Zach Randolph (18 ppg; foot) is questionable. Knicks are 2-6 ATS without him this season.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Nets at New Orleans Hornets [8 PM ET]

Nets: This is a revenge game for the Nets after New Orleans used a pair of 4-point plays to beat them back on November 12th. The Hornets trailed 82-78 with 2:10 left before tying the game with the second one and then won it with 2.8 seconds remaining. New Jersey played that game without Vince Carter, who is shooting 49 percent from the field since Jason Kidd was traded (he is a career 45 percent shooter).

Road team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Hornets: New Orleans plays 11 of its last 22 games against Eastern Conference opponents. The Hornets are 13-5 vs. the East this season, with 2 of those losses coming to the Wizards in the last couple weeks.

Hornets are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 home games.
Hornets are 4-1 SU & ATS in their last 5 games overall.

F David West (20 ppg; ankle) is questionable. Hornets are 2-0 ATS without him this season.

              ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Boston Celtics [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Bulls: Chicago is in the midst of one of the toughest stretches of the season. The Bulls played Cleveland on Thursday night and must play Detroit and Utah after visiting the Celtics. That adds to the challenge of trying to work Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden into the lineup, as they must do so against some of the league's best teams.

Bulls are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Friday games.
Bulls are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings but have failed to cover the last 3.

Celtics: Boston became the first team to officially clinch a playoff berth with Wednesday's win over Detroit, which was also big because it guaranteed home court if the teams should finish the regular season tied and meet in the postseason.

Celtics have won 6 in a row SU but have gone 1-3 ATS in their last 4.

G Sam Cassell (13 ppg; trade) is expected to be in Boston by Friday morning, and is probable to make his debut.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns [9 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah will play its first game against the new-look Suns with Shaquille O'Neal in the lineup, and this could also potentially be a first-round playoff matchup. The Jazz won the previous meeting with Phoenix by 22 points, but the Suns played that game without Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Grant Hill due to illness and injuries.

Jazz are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
Jazz are 4-1 SU & ATS in their last 5 games overall.

F Andrei Kirilenko (hip) is out. Jazz are 4-2 ATS without him this season.

Suns: Phoenix may have a secret weapon here in Gordan Giricek, the former Utah sharp-shooter who feuded with head coach Jerry Sloan before getting dealt to Philadelphia for Kyle Korver earlier this season. The 76ers released him - allowing the Suns to pick him up - and he scored 11 points in his team debut on Wednesday.

Suns are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Suns are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games vs. Northwest Division.

              ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers [10:30 PM ET]

Clippers: The team should have Chris Kaman available for this game, although his playing time has been limited to 25 minutes per game by head coach Mike Dunleavy. Despite all the injuries, the Clips have been led by Corey Maggette, who has scored 20 points or more in 21 of his last 24 games - the best stretch of his career.

Clippers are 1-6 SU in their last 7 games overall, going 2-5 ATS.

F Tim Thomas (13 ppg; groin) is doubtful. Clippers are 4-7 ATS without him this season.

Lakers: It was only a few years ago that the Clippers were threatening the reign of the Lakers as the best team in LA. That's obviously no longer in question, as the Lakers have won both meetings this season by a combined 39 points. They are 13-2 with Pau Gasol in the lineup, and he is coming off a Laker-high 31 point at Sacramento on Tuesday.

Lakers are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games vs. Pacific Division.
Lakers are 15-4 ATS in their last 19 games overall.
Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

              ----------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio's winning streak will be tested over the next 9 days, as the team visits Denver, Phoenix, New Orleans and Dallas with a home game against the Nuggets sandwiched in between. The Spurs had won 10 games against Eastern Conference opponents during a 13-1 run going into Thursday's matchup with Indiana.

Spurs are 6-3-1 ATS during their 10-game winning streak.
Spurs are 5-1 SU & ATS in the last 6 meetings.
Spurs are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Denver.

Nuggets: Wednesday's win over the Suns was a step in the right direction for a team that is currently on the outside looking in on the Western Conference playoff picture. Denver must play San Antonio again Monday on the road and has proven to be a very successful team at home with a 24-7 mark. However, the Nuggets still sit 1 game behind Golden State for the final playoff spot, and they realize they must take advantage of games like this.

Nuggets are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
