    Six-pack for Thursday

CBS Sportsline's top six college football teams, prior to the start of 2008 spring practice........

    6) Florida-- Adds top flight RB to help QB Tebow.

    5) Missouri-- Looks to build upon LY's breakthrough year.

    4) Ohio State-- Seems like they're always at this level.....

    3) USC-- Who will be the QB, Sanchez or Mustain?

    2) Oklahoma-- Had terrific season last year with freshman QB

    1) Georgia-- Should have been in Rose Bowl last year.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Weird week for Baylor, which played Texas A&M last nite, after Aggies trailed 28-10 at half in previous game, then faces Texas Tech next, with Raiders off 50-point loss at Kansas.

      12) Moises Alou is already hurt, is having hernia surgery back in New York Thuraday, in Arizona, Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby are also already hurt, hardly a shock to anyone who follows the A's. Those two hardly ever play, but they always get paid.

      11) The Mets don't have MRI facilities in Florida? Why not?

      10) John McCain's father-in-law owned one of the biggest beer distributorships in the country......

      9) Oregon State has good chance to become first 0-18 team in history of Pac-10 basketball; USC went 0-14 in the Pac-8 days back in mid-70's, the last winless Pac-10 basketball squad.

      8) Harvard's 2008 basketball recruiting class is ranked in top 25 in nation; some are wondering if Crimson are breaking NCAA rules, hard to do when you don't give scholarships, but where there is smoke in these stories, there is usually some fire.

      7) I was surprised to learn that Houston is fourth-biggest city in the country. Didn't seem that big when I was there.

      6) Georgia Tech is 2-5 at home in ACC, but all five losses have been by either one or two points.

      5) Some in college hoop are getting annoyed with ESPN's daily dose of Bracketology, where they give their opinion of who is in and who is out of field of 65, like it is gospel. Tim Brando on FOX Sunday night was especially critical.......

      4) Some NFL players are taking college classes set up by their union this offseason, so they can learn how to take better care of their money; lot of guys get ton of money at young age, and can't handle it, so this is a wise thing.

      3) Vanderbilt's Shan Foster scored 42 points and scored game winning hoop in OT, as Commdores edge Mississippi State in OT 87-86, in game between two of SEC's best teams.

      2) Florida made its first nine shots from floor, shot 7-12 on arc in first half, storming to 55-43 halftime lead, but Tennessee had 14-0 run midway in second half, grabbing 10-point lead at one point, before Vols escaped with 89-86 win. Game ends a brutal four-game stretch for Tennessee (at Memphis, at Vandy, and at Florida, home game vs Kentucky in between).

      1) Quite a night in first round of Patriot League tournament; in four games, the total margin of victory was eight points, with #7 seed Bucknell upsetting #2 seed Navy 87-86 in triple OT, while Army upset Lehigh, also in overtime.

Cavaliers: Cleveland is 5-2 this season when holding opponents under 40 percent. The Cavs held the Bulls to 39.2 percent shooting in Sunday's win, and Chicago ranks last in the NBA in field-goal shooting at 42.9 percent.

Cavs are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games vs. Central Division.

Bulls: Former Chicago center Ben Wallace expects a reaction by Bulls fans in his first appearance there since getting traded to the Cavs. “The only thing I would be disappointed about is if I get no reaction at all,” Wallace said. “Because I deserve it, one way or the other. If they come out and they boo like they mean it, then I’ll live with that. If they come out and cheer like they mean it, then I’ll live with that."

Home team is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.

G Thabo Sefolosha (7 ppg; groin) is listed as questionable. The Bulls are 3-7 ATS without him.

Rockets: Tracy McGrady is taking on arguably the biggest leadership role of his career with Yao Ming out, attempting to silence all doubters during the team's winning streak. “What more we got to show you all?” McGrady said. “We’re a good team. We believe. We don’t care about what anybody says about us outside this locker room."

Rockets are 13-2 ATS during their 15-game winning streak.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#13 Connecticut (-3.5) at Providence [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

UConn: The Huskies are able to run a lot more thanks to the return of guards Doug Wiggins and Jerome Dyson, who are both back in key reserve roles after serving suspensions earlier in the season. This quality depth makes UConn a very dangerous offensive team.

UConn is 2-7 ATS in its last 9 Thursday games.
UConn is 7-3-1 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                Injuries - None.

Providence: The Friars will be without a point guard going into their last 3 games of the regular season. Sharaud Curry was already out for the season, and now Dwain Williams (11 points per game) will miss time with an ankle injury. This puts them at a tremendous disadvantage against the deep Huskies.

Providence is 1-5 SU & ATS in its last 6 games.

G Dwain Williams (11 ppg; ankle) is out. Providence is 1-2 ATS in the last three games since Williams went down.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                -----------------------------------------------------------

                #24 Clemson (-1) at Georgia Tech [ESPN2 | 7 PM ET]

Clemson: Forward James Mays (10.5 ppg) is wearing a new cast with less padding on it that longer requires his last 3 fingers to be tied together. The result has been much better shooting in the last 2 games, as he has made 13-of-20 shots (65 percent) for 30 points combined during that stretch. That could be critical since guard Cliff Hammonds is trying to play through a broken wrist.

Clemson is 4-1 SU in the last 5 meetings.
Clemson is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.

G Cliff Hammonds (11.9 ppg; broken wrist) is listed as questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 77

Georgia Tech: The Yellowjackets are just 6-7 at home this season and need a win to avoid their first losing record at Alexander Memorial Coliseum since 1980-81. They have also been on the losing side of close games this year, going 6-7 in contests decided by 5 points or less.

Georgia Tech is 1-6 SU in its last 7 games overall.
Georgia Tech is 9-4 ATS in its last 13 Thursday games.

G Matt Causey (8 ppg; concussion) is listed as questionable. Tech is 1-1 ATS in the last 2 games without him.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 75

                -----------------------------------------------------------

                #8 Xavier (-1.5) at St. Joseph's [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Xavier: The Musketeers are starting to grind it out during their 11-game winning streak and may be on the verge of a loss. “That was probably the worst game we’ve played in a year-and-a-half,” Xavier head coach Sean Miller said of Saturday's game. “Our team still showed a lot of heart, though. We found a way to win on a night we didn’t play very well.”

Xavier is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 Thursday games.
Xavier is 5-6 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.

                Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 73 (Side Play of the Day)

St. Joe's: The Hawks are coming off a deflating 57-56 loss to Temple on Sunday, blowing a 43-29 lead in the second half. They lead the Atlantic-10 in 3-point shooting yet made only 2-of-16 3-point attempts, which could be a problem again against a Xavier team that is allowing opponents to make just 33 percent from beyond the arc.

The UNDER is 10-4 in St. Joe's last 14 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-3 in St. Joe's last 10 games overall.

                Injuries - None.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 68

                -----------------------------------------------------------

                #17 Michigan State (-2) at Illinois [ESPN2 | 9 PM ET]

Michigan State: The Spartans are just 2-7 in Big Ten road games this season, and forward Goran Suton would like to improve upon that here against a struggling Illinois team. “I do think we have a road-warrior mentality,” Suton said. “We just have to do a better job of showing it."

Michigan State is 3-8 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

                Injuries - None.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 63

Illinois: Poor free-throw shooting continues to dog the Illini, who are making just 61 percent from the "charity " stripe to rank last in the Big Ten and 330th in the nation out of 341 teams.

Illinois is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
Illinois is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 home games.
Illinois is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games vs. Big Ten.

                Injuries - None.

Pick 'n' Roll: Thursday's NBA bets
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Cleveland at Chicago (-3.5, 193.5)

All that jabbering with Spike Lee, jacking 25-foot treys, and single-handedly snuffing the life out of a determined Knicks team can take a lot out of a fella. But just because that's how LeBron James spent his Wednesday night before the second half of a back-to-back in Chicago doesn't justify the Cavs coming into this game as significant underdogs against the 10th place team in the East. This line opened with the Bulls at -4 and it's already been bet down to -3.5 - and although the public isn't always the best indicator of which way you should bet, in this instance I think they're right. The Bulls' are just 2-4 since the big trade, but the Cavs have jelled much better with a 4-2 record in that time. It also doesn't help that Tyrus Thomas has been suspended for two games for missing practice. The last time these teams played, Thomas was a significant factor with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

                              Pick: Cavaliers

Indiana at San Antonio (-13.5, 196)

You'd be a fool to go against the Spurs while they're on a 10-game winning streak. This team is starting to peak right on schedule as they get primed for the playoffs - so don't think they'll let a team like Indiana stand in their way. San Antonio is the kind of team that can have a bad shooting night like they did in their last game on Tuesday (33.8 %) and still manage to win by 11 and get the push. You can expect a much better performance tonight against the third worst scoring defense in the league. And if you're worried about laying the points, just remind yourself that San Antonio is 9-5 ATS when favored by 10 or more points.

                              Pick: Spurs

Houston at Dallas (-6, no total)

The Mavericks have won and covered against Houston in six straight meetings, but this game will be an entirely different animal. Dirk Nowitzki has been suspended by the league and Yao Ming is out for the rest of the Rockets' season. Amazingly, the Rockets are 4-0 straight up and ATS without Yao as this team has shown surprising depth with young players stepping up and Tracy McGrady taking the leadership role. The Mavs, on the other hand, will be playing their first game without their leading scorer and the league's reigning MVP. That will most likely require a major adjustment and it will probably throw off their rhythm for at least the first half of this game.

                              Pick: Houston
