      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts........

      13) I would still rank John Elway and Steve Young as the two best QB’s I’ve ever seen, but Brett Favre was one of the most fun to watch; you just never knew what he was going to do. We wish him well in his life’s next chapter.

      12) When Seattle traded Kurt Thomas to Spurs, they turned down a better offer from Orlando; Sonics’ GM Sam Presti came to Seattle from the Alamo—why did the NBA allow the trade to go through? Seems a little bit fishy, doesn't it?

      11) 76ers’ G Kevin Ollie has played on 12 different teams in his 11-year NBA career.

      10) In the last three years, NFL’s salary cap has jumped from $85M to $116M.

      9) Rams made smart move in signing G Jacob Bell away from Tennessee; Bell protected Ben Roethlisberger in college while at Miami OH, is three-years starter for Titans. This plugs a trouble spot for Rams; since ’04, 11 different guys started at left guard—four just last season.

      8) Arizona, California are two worst states in this country for identity theft; the average identity theft in Califonrnia sets the average victim back $3,000.

      7) Nolan Richardson is serious about taking Arkansas State basketball job; if he gets it, the Sun Belt Conference will get a whole lot more interesting.

      6) No 9-9 Pac-10 team has ever made the NCAA tournament; Arizona has to sweep the Oregon schools this weekend, just to get to 9-9, but they’ve played toughest schedule in country, so my guess is that two wins this weekend gets them in.

      5) There is no way the Duke-Carolina hoop rivalry is as intense as Bama-Auburn in football. Crimson Tide had 92,000 freakin’ people last year, for their spring game!!!!!

      4) ESPN has Pete Maravich at #5, David Thompson #8 on their all-time players’ list. Pistol Pete was a joy to watch, but anyone who thinks he was a better college player than Thompson is nuts. LSU never even made NCAA tournament in that era.

      3) Giants’ Noah Lowry walked nine of the 12 Rangers he faced in Monday’s exhibition game; he threw 24 pitches before any Texas batter even swung the bat. Weird thing is, Lowry is a pretty good hurler who isn’t a power pitcher, so control has rarely been an issue for him. Tuesday night, Giants announced Lowry has wrist tendonitis, and will miss several days.

      2) I’d love to know how much scrambling there was at the NFL offices when they heard about Favre retiring, changing dates for national TV on the ’08 schedule. No way will the Packers get many national TV dates with Favre not playing this year.

      1) Do you think Packer GM Ted Thompson made a phone call to Cleveland Tuesday morning, to discuss Derek Anderson?

National Basketball Association - Tips & Trends

          NBA

          Wednesday, March 5

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks [7:30 PM ET]

Cavaliers: Cleveland is 11-4 this season when LeBron James scores 35 or more points. James did just that on Sunday against Chicago with 37, and he is averaging 30 points in his last 4 trips to Madison Square Garden. The Cavs are 1-3 in those games.

Knicks: Some of the team's younger players are beginning to get more playing time, especially with Zach Randolph hurting with a foot injury. Insiders believe this could be a sign that head coach Isiah Thomas is already starting to plan for the future - one that he most likely won't be a part of.

          Top Trends

Cavs are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
Cavs have not covered consecutive games since January 30.
The OVER is 8-1 in New York's last 9 games vs. Eastern Conference.

          Key Injuries

Cavs' C Zydrunas Ilgauskas (14 ppg; back) is listed as not expected to play. Cavs are 1-0 SU & ATS without him this year.
Knicks' F Zach Randolph (18 ppg; foot) is listed as questionable. Knicks are 0-5 SU & 1-4 ATS without him.

Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics [7:30 PM ET]

          Team Tips

Pistons: The visiting team has won each of the first 2 meetings between the top teams in the Eastern Conference, and this will be the last opportunity for both to show they are the superior team. Still, Detroit head coach Flip Saunders insists the team isn't caught up in keeping pace with the Celtics. “We don’t look at that,” Saunders said. “Whether you have the one-seed, the two, it all kind of pans out. You have to win on the road. We haven’t put a lot of emphasis that we have to catch Boston. Our main thing is let’s take care of ourselves—we’ll have a good record and see where it falls in.”

Celtics: It will be interesting to see how Sam Cassell will fit in with the team even though he probably won't see any action in this game. Still, there is a positive attitude in Boston knowing that Cassell could very well be the missing piece of the puzzle. “(GM Danny Ainge) asked me how I felt about it,” Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo said. “I told him I thought it would be a great idea. It can only help me.”

          Top Trends

Pistons are 9-1 SU in the last 10 meetings.
Pistons are 13-4 ATS in their last 17 games vs. Atlantic Division.
Celtics are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

          Key Injuries

Pistons' G Chauncey Billups (personal) is expected to play.
Celtics' G Sam Cassell (13 ppg; trade) has passed his physical but is not expected to play.

Indiana Pacers at Houston Rockets [8:30 PM ET]

          Team Tips

Pacers: Mike Dunleavy has stepped up offensively in the last 6 games, topping 30 points 3 times following back-to-back performances of 36. “Mike is a hell of a scorer,” Pacers head coach Jim O'Brien said. “He gets on a roll, and we try running him off as many pick-and-rolls as we can. Whenever Mike or Danny (Granger) score a lot of points, a lot of it has to do with our tempo. The last couple games, our tempo has been where it needed to be.”

Rockets: Star Tracy McGrady insists the team remains on a mission to make the playoffs despite the loss of Yao Ming. “We know how good we are and we’re showing it,” McGrady said. “We’re a focused group, a group that understands how to win ballgames.” However, some insiders remain skeptical of the team's 15-game winning streak due to a soft schedule.

          Top Trends

Pacers are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games vs. Southwest Division.
Pacers are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings, covering the last 3.
Rockets are 13-2 ATS during their 15-game winning streak.

          Key Injuries

Pacers' F/C Jermaine O’Neal (15 ppg; knee) and G Jamaal Tinsley (12 ppg; knee) are out indefinitely. 8-12 ATS L20 without O’Neal; 5-6 ATS without Tinsley.
Rockets' C Yao Ming (22 ppg; foot) is out for season. Rockets are 3-1 ATS without him this year.

Phoenix Suns at Denver Nuggets [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

          Team Tips

Suns: Phoenix is stil searching for outside shooters and seems to have found at least one in former Jazz/76er Gordan Giricek, who could make his debut against Denver. The Suns are also pursuing Tyronn Lue, further proof that spot-up shooters are needed now with Shaquille O'Neal patrolling the middle.

Nuggets: Keeping up with the Suns has been a major problem for Denver in the last 2 meetings - losing those games by a combined 39 points - but insiders expect the Nuggets to run-and-gun again in this one. Shaq will be playing back-to-back nights, and the high altitude could be a big factor

          Top Trends

Suns are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Northwest Division.
Nuggets are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 home games but have failed to cover their last 2.

          Key Injuries

          None.

                Team Tips

Duke: This is a possible look-ahead spot for Duke, as a meeting with intrastate rival North Carolina looms on Saturday. The Blue Devils pushed against Miami prior to the last meeting with the Tar Heels and then failed to cover their following game against Boston College in a 90-80 victory.

Virginia: The main concern for Virginia here will be playing be fatigue, as the Cavs are playing their third game in 5 days. They are coming off a huge 76-74 victory at Georgia Tech on Monday thanks to a game-winning shot by Calvin Baker with 4 seconds left.

Syracuse at Seton Hall [ESPN2 | 7 PM ET]

                Team Tips

Syracuse: The Orange are coming off a devastating home loss to Pitt on Saturday, blowing an 11-point lead in the final 4 minutes and self-destructing down the stretch. This appears to be a very tired, young team that relies mainly on underclassmen and is simply running out of gas, especially late in games. With their NCAA tournament hopes likely over, insiders wonder how much motivation the team will play with in its last few games.

Seton Hall: The Pirates are on the verge qualifying for the Big East tournament, their preseason goal heading into the season. They likely need just one win to get in and expect a sell-out crowd for this game since there are a lot Syracuse alumni in the New Jersey alumni. Right now, both teams are in a 3-way tie with Villanova for ninth place in the league.

                Texas A&M at Baylor [ESPN2 | 9 PM ET]

                Team Tips

Texas A&M: The Aggies are coming off aguably their most embarrassing effort ever, totaling just 10 first-half points in a 64-37 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday. They failed to score for more than 16 minutes and missed 20 straight shots at one point, the longest drought in Division 1 since the introduction of the shot clock in 1986.

Baylor: The Bears are playing without much pressure despite sitting on the NCAA tournament bubble. In fact, forward Kevin Rogers got 3 assistant coaches to shave their heads by reaching a milestone of 20 wins, which they accomplished with a victory against Missouri on Saturday. Head coach Scott Drew agreed to have Rogers shave his head as well if the team ties the school record of 23 wins.

College funds: Wednesday's top NCAA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      Tennessee vs. Florida (+3, -155)

The Volunteers can clinch the outright SEC East title with a win and can secure the outright regular season league championship with a win and a Mississippi State loss at Vanderbilt tonight.

Tennessee is 5-1 overall and 2-0 on the road against Florida with Chris Lofton in the lineup. The senior has averaged 20.3 points on 53.4 percent shooting against the Gators in his career. He had 26 points on 6-of-11 3-point shooting in the Vols' 104-82 win over Florida in Knoxville on Feb. 5. Tyler Smith and JaJuan Smith each added 23 points in that game.

Florida likely needs to win at least one of its last two games to earn an NCAA tourney berth and after tonight, they end the regular season at Kentucky on Sunday.

                      Pick: Tennessee -3

                      Minnesota vs. Indiana (-9, 140)

The 18th-ranked Hoosiers look to bounce back from their worst defeat in four years when they host Minnesota tonight. Indiana (24-5, 13-3 Big Ten) lost 103-74 at then-No. 19 Michigan State on Sunday for its most lopsided defeat since losing 79-45 at Wisconsin on Jan. 6, 2004.

The loss snapped the Hoosiers' four-game winning streak and was their first in three games since Kelvin Sampson resigned as coach on Feb. 22 amid NCAA allegations of major rule infractions.

We might expect another lax effort, but this is senior D.J. White's last college game at home and you can expect him to keep the Hoosiers' energy level high.

The Gophers are 0-6 versus Top 25 teams this season and have lost their last 11 games versus ranked opponents.

                      Pick: under 140
