    Weekend Sports Preview

The already jam-packed sports schedule gets even more loaded this weekend when AFL joins NBA, college hoops, NHL and NASCAR.

The NBA weekend gets started on Friday night with a full slate of 12 games. Topping the schedule is a prime Western Conference clash between Utah and New Orleans, while the Lakers take their best in the West record into Portland. Also on tap on Friday night is Indiana at Toronto, New York at Atlanta, Minnesota at Cleveland, Charlotte at Boston, Washington at Chicago, Sacramento at Dallas, Memphis at Houston, Miami at Seattle and the Clippers at Denver.

Things slow down in the pro ranks on Saturday with only five games on the schedule. All five of the matchups look like possible routs, especially Utah at Memphis and Detroit at the Clippers. The rest of Saturday’s one-sided affairs include New York at Orlando, San Antonio at Milwaukee and Philadelphia at Phoenix.

Another busy day in the association follows on Sunday with 11 games, highlighted by Chicago taking on Cleveland for the first time since their big deadline trade, Kidd and the Mavericks at Gasol and the Lakers, Atlanta at Boston and Denver at Houston. Also on Sunday you can catch New Orleans at Washington, San Antonio at New Jersey, Milwaukee at Indiana, Toronto at Charlotte, Seattle at Minnesota, Miami at Sacramento and Portland at Golden State.

In college hoops this weekend nine of the Top 10 ranked schools in the nation will be in action. On Saturday seven of the Top 10 teams play, with the only ranked matchup being No. 8 Stanford hosting No. 22 Washington State. The rest of the Top 10 games on Saturday include No. 7 Duke at N.C. State, No. 3 North Carolina at Boston College, No. 2 Memphis at Southern Miss, No. 5 Texas at Texas Tech, George Washington at No. 9 Xavier and Kansas State at No. 6 Kansas.

On Sunday No. 1 Tennessee will try to rebound from an upset loss when they host Kentucky, while No. 4 UCLA invades Arizona.

On the ice this weekend the NHL begins on Friday with seven games on tap. Plenty of teams in the playoff hunt battle on Friday, including Washington at New Jersey and Montreal at Buffalo, while two possible Western Conference playoff previews include San Jose at Detroit and Calgary at Anaheim. The rest of the Friday night schedule includes Minnesota at Florida, Toronto at Tampa Bay and Columbus at Vancouver.

On Saturday the Eastern Conference playoff race could become even tighter when Pittsburgh visits Ottawa, New Jersey travels to Montreal, Philadelphia drops in on the Islanders and Atlanta takes on Boston. Also on the Saturday night schedule is Tampa Bay at Carolina, Toronto at Washington, Nashville at Dallas, Los Angeles at Colorado, San Jose at St. Louis and Calgary at Phoenix.

Sunday in the NHL there are seven more games starting with Philadelphia at the Rangers, Vancouver at Chicago, Atlanta at Pittsburgh and Florida at the Islanders. The three late games on Sunday include Detroit at Buffalo, Los Angeles at Minnesota and Columbus at Edmonton.

The new AFL season kicks off on Friday night, as the hunt for Arena Bowl XXII begins.

Friday night’s season-opener pits New Orleans against Los Angeles (-9.5). On Saturday the season really gets going with four games, including Dallas at Georgia (+4.5), Tampa Bay at Kansas City, Orlando at Philadelphia (-6) and Arizona at Utah (-6).

The lone AFL contest on Sunday is Columbus at Colorado (-6).

The drivers of NASCAR will hope for better weather on Sunday when they head to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the UAW-Dodge 400. Jimmie Johnson won this race the last three seasons running and he’s the favorite at 5/1. Carl Edwards won the delayed Auto Club 500 last week, but he’s a 10/1 underdog to win back-to-back in Las Vegas this weekend.

      Six-pack + for Friday

Odds on teams to win NCAA hoop title......

-- Louisville, 10-1- Playing as well as anyone right now.

-- Duke, 8-1-- Lack real inside presence, but how many teams are good enough to beat them? 8-1 is pretty good number.

-- Tennessee, 8-1-- Haven't been great post-season team in Pearl's tenure; blew big lead vs Ohio State last March.

-- North Carolina 5-1-- Need Ty Lawson back soon. Sure is a lot of blue on this list.

-- UCLA 4-1-- Been in last two Final Fours; healthier at this point that at any time this season.

-- Memphis 7-2-- Shooting is their Achilles' Heel; will they be able to survive the one game when their shots don't fall?

-- Kansas 3-1-- Going through some real-life turmoil now; do not think they're great choice as the favorite.

Two intriguing longshots: Texas 30-1, Marquette 75-1.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here.......

        13) Bob Knight just won't go away; one of least friendly folks ever to grace this planet will now be an ESPN studio analyst in March. Will be interesting to see how he does, I guess, but a guy who seems to enjoy bullying media is now one of them.

        12) Jim Valvano was best studio analyst ESPN ever had; Fran Fraschilla, Tom Brennan, Doug Gottlieb, Steve Lavin are best ESPN has now-- they all have one thing in common- they like to talk, express their opinions in a friendly way, like you're at a bar talking to friends. Hard to imagine Knight doing that.

        11) Knight obviously is brilliant when it comes to hoop, but so is Rick Majerus, and he struggled on TV, he just never seemed comfortable in front of the camera, for unknown reasons. Best things about Knight's presence is less airtime for Mr Phelps.

        10) If you put USC coach Tim Floyd, Texas coach Rick Barnes in a room with actor Dennis Quaid and author John Grisham, it wouldn't be easy to decide who the two coaches were. Floyd and Quaid are lookalikes, as are Barnes and Grisham-- Barnes has been asked for autographs by people who thought he was the best-selling author.

        9) USC once went 24-2 in basketball in early 70's, before all the at-large bids to NCAA tournament; their two losses were both to UCLA, so they didn't even get into the tournament, same as when the great Maryland team in '74 rolled through NIT after a 103-100 overtime loss to NC State in finals of ACC tourney.

        9) VCU cut down the nets after clinching CAA regular season title, an interesting pyschological ploy by coach Grant- he said he wants his younger players to get used to winning titles.

        8) Pac-10 football will have little but of downturn next year, in part because only three of ten starting QBs return in the fall.

        7) I'd love to know what Big 11 hoop coaches think of having a lot less of their games on ESPN, because of the Big 11 Network which is on a pay tier on DirecTV. Lot less exposure cannot be real good for recruiting, especially when Big 12 teams pick up the ESPN slots the Big 11 deserted.

        6) Daniel Snyder has spent a fortune on the Redskins, but how in the name of Otto Graham does he not have a coach on staff who has ever called a play in an NFL game? It may mean Skins will have a fresh, imaginative approach, but it is real unusual.

        5) Tom Coughlin was 0-2, trailed 17-3 at half in Week 3; now he is about to sign four-year, $21M contract. Wonder if he'll send a thank you note to Tiki Barber for retiring?

        4) How can any Met fan in their right mind criticize the team's signing of Johan Santana? They have money, they've got new park they need to sell luxury boxes in, and they own TV station so they had to sign Santana, even if they may have overpaid.

        3) Jose Guillen is playing for his ninth team in 12 years in 2008, his fifth team in six years. Excluding 2006, when he was hurt for most of the season: here are Guillen's stats for his last four full seasons in major leagues:
        .311, 31HR/.299, 27 HR/.283, 24 HR/.290, 23HR.

        2) Why does someone like this change teams so often ? He is so disliked by the Angels, they cut him in middle of a pennant race, just to get rid of him. To cut someone as productive as he is, Guillen must be one hell of a guy.

        1) If Barack Obama gets elected, it'll be first time the President of the United States is younger than me. Thats a little eerie.

            Additional

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Arena Football 2008 Preview

The Arena Football League kicks off its 22nd season, and each of the 17 teams will have the same goal in mind…Reaching Arena Bowl XXII, scheduled for July 27th in New Orleans. San Jose returns as the defending champion, and is widely regarded as one of the favorites to return to the throne in 2008. Other top contenders figure to be Dallas, Chicago, and Georgia.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Preseason AFL Power Poll

Parity in the Arena Football League is at an all-time high. Over the last 10 years there have been seven different ArenaBowl winners. In fact, no team has repeated as AFL champions since the Tampa Bay Storm won consecutive titles in 1995-96. The San Jose SaberCats, winners of three of the last six championships, have been the closest thing to a dynasty the League has seen in some time.

With 17 teams (two less than last season) vying for the title this year, every club has the talent to win it all. The key to a championship will be consistent play, good health and a little luck.

Last year in this preseason column, I was somehow able to predict the San Jose SaberCats (over the Georgia Force) in the ArenaBowl. Let’s see if I can make it two years in a row.

Power Poll Rankings (2007 records in parenthesis)

17- Cleveland Gladiators (2-14) – Moved from Las Vegas to Cleveland in off-season and will have a brand-new look in ’08...Will be much better this season but doesn’t have the depth of the top teams.

16- Columbus Destroyers (7-9) – A year removed from the ArenaBowl but will take a step back in ’08...Only nine players return from the National Conference championship team from last year...Looks like a rebuilding season for head coach Doug Kay and the Destroyers.

15- Arizona Rattlers (4-12) – New coach, new quarterback, new management...The Rattlers are hoping to turn things around in ’08 but face a tough schedule in the Western Division with the likes of San Jose, Los Angeles and Utah and non-conference battles with Georgia, Orlando and Dallas..

14- New Orleans VooDoo (5-11) – Losing free agent WR Derrick Lewis (torn ACL) in training camp is a huge blow for the VooDoo...Without a go-to receiver on offense and their top pass rusher on defense (traded Henry Taylor to New York), New Orleans doesn’t have the horses to cash their ticket in this race.

13- Grand Rapids Rampage (4-12) – New head coach Steve Thonn brings an offensive mind to Western Michigan but the Rampage lacks “big name” talent with the exception of DB Ahmad Hawkins...Will be better in ’08 but the key to the season will be how an inconsistent QB Adrian McPherson adapts to Thonn’s timing-based offense.

12- New York Dragons (5-11) – If QB Aaron Garcia can stay healthy the Dragons have a chance...New York must do a better job of protecting the passer (allowed 26 sacks last season) or it could be another long season on Long Island.

11- Utah Blaze (8-8) – Lost top WR Siaha Burley to Arizona but added a slew of top defenders in free agency, including pass rushers Dwayne Missouri and E.J Burt, and DB Reggie Doster...QB Joe Germaine will have to spread the ball around to a number of receivers and the secondary will have to make plays for Utah to compete with San Jose and Los Angeles in the West.

10- Colorado Crush (8-8) – Losing WR Damian Harrell to free agency hurts... Veteran QB John Dutton will have to step up his game along with young receivers Ben Nelson, Brad Pyatt and Willie Quinnie if Colorado wants to make any noise in the Central...If Dutton continues to turn the ball over (tied for AFL lead with 17 INTs in ’07) it could be a disappointing season in the Rockies.

9- Orlando Predators (8-8) – Despite losing WR Jimmy Fryzel (season-ending injury) and DL Greg White (signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers), the Predators will be in the mix again in ’08...Jay Gruden is too good of a coach to let his team slip...QB Shane Stafford didn’t play up to expectations last year but should benefit from a full season with WR T.T. Toliver.

8- Los Angeles Avengers (9-7) – My pick for surprise team in ’08...Third-year QB Sonny Cumbie is a star in the making in head coach Ed Hodgkiss’ offensive system...The defensive line of Jason Stewart, Ken Jones and Josh Jefferies gives the Avengers one of the top pass rushing units in the League.

7- Kansas City Brigade (10-6) – Could be another sleeper team in ‘08....Coming off a solid 10-6 season a year ago and added quality players (DB Jerald Brown, WR Mike Horacek, DL Mike Sutton) on both sides of the ball...The key to the season will be the play of veteran QB John Fitzgerald, who was out of the AFL last season coaching in af2...If Fitzgerald can manage the game and play consistently, the Brigade will surprise some people this year.

6- Tampa Bay Storm (9-7) – Caught fire at the end of last season and returns all the key contributors on both sides of the ball...There are high expectations for second-year QB Brett Dietz, who will be surrounded by veteran receivers Terrill Shaw, Lawrence Samuels and David Saunders...

5- Georgia Force (14-2) – Will need to replace 67 touchdowns with the loss of receivers Chris Jackson and Derek Lee to free agency...Biggest loss could be offensive coordinator Steve Thonn (now head coach in Grand Rapids) but head coach Doug Plank is confident in WRs Troy Bergeron, Brent Holmes, Carl Morris and Jamin Elliot, along with new coordinator Jim Kubiak.

4- Philadelphia Soul (8-8) – The addition of free agent WR Chris Jackson gives the Soul the big-play threat they’ve been lacking...With QB Tony Graziani and Jackson, expectations are high in the city of Brotherly Love...The quarterback and receivers garner most of the headlines, but the key to Philadelphia’s success will be the likes of defensive linemen Gabe Nyenhuis and Bryan Save and the rest of the Soul’s defense.

3- Chicago Rush (12-4) – The Rush lost their top two offensive players during the off-season (QB Matt D’Orazio and WR Bobby Sippio) but didn’t miss a beat with the addition of free agents QB Sherdrick Bonner and WR Damian Harrell...The defense has been the heart and soul of the club for the last few seasons and should be among the League’s top units again this season.

2- Dallas Desperados (15-1) – Will come out with a chip on their shoulder after dominating the regular season the last two years (28-4 combined record) only to fall in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons...On offense, veteran QB Clint Dolezel returns the nucleus of his receiving corps, and an overachieving defense got even better with the addition of free agent DB DaShane Dennis.

1- San Jose SaberCats (13-3) – The SaberCats are the champs and will remain so until someone knocks them off...Has won three of the last six championships and will be in the mix every year as long as QB Mark Grieb, WR James Roe and DBs Clevan Thomas and Omarr Smith are on the roster...The receiving corps is getting a little older but Grieb is the most accurate passer to ever play the indoor game.

            Looking into the crystal ball...

            American Conference Playoff Teams
San Jose, Chicago, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Colorado, Utah

            National Conference Playoff Teams
Dallas, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Georgia, Orlando, New York

            American Conference Championship Game:
            San Jose over Kansas City

            National Conference Championship Game:
            Dallas over Philadelphia

            ArenaBowl XXII (New Orleans)
            Dallas over San Jose
