      Sunday NBA Gameday

East meets West in three top-notch NBA matchups on Sunday when Detroit visits Phoenix, Boston travels to Portland, and Chicago challenges Houston.

      Detroit at Phoenix

The Pistons snapped a short two-game losing streak on Friday night after they routed Milwaukee 127-100 as a 13-point favorite. Chauncey Billups led the Pistons with 21 points and 12 assists, while Rasheed Wallace and Richard Hamilton each had 16 points in the easy victory. The dominating victory made up for a surprising upset loss at the hands of the Bucks only two nights earlier.

The Suns burned Boston 85-77 as a 1-point favorite on Friday night. Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 28 points, while Steve Nash added 18 points and five assists. In his second game with Phoenix Shaquille O’Neal was held to only four points, but he was a monster on the glass with 14 rebounds.

The Pistons and Suns haven’t met up since last season when Detroit routed Phoenix 105-83 as a 5.5-point road underdog.

      Boston at Portland

The Celtics lost their third straight on Friday night after falling to Phoenix as a road underdog. Kevin Garnett scored a team-high 19 points, but Boston’s other big two both struggled in the loss. Paul Pierce shot a miserable 2-for-13 from the floor for eight points, while Ray Allen hit only 3-of-12 for 11 points. Boston also lost the battle on the glass, as the Suns out-rebounded the Celtics 50-32.

The Trail Blazers played Seattle in a home-and-home series on back-to-back nights Thursday and Friday. On Thursday Portland defeated Seattle 92-88 as a 9-point favorite. Back in Seattle on Friday night it was a different story. In the rematch Portland was a 2-point favorite, but was hammered 99-87. La Marcus Aldridge led the Blazers with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Brandon Roy shot a disappointing 6-for-19 for 19 points with six rebounds and five assists. The loss was Portland’s sixth in their last seven games.

Boston and Portland collided back in January when the Celtics dumped the Blazers 100-90 as an 8-point home favorite. Ray Allen poured in 35 points in the win, while Kevin Garnett had 26 points. Roy led Portland with 22 points and six assists.

      Chicago at Houston

The Bulls played shorthanded against Denver on Friday night, but still came away with a 135-121 win as a 4.5-point underdog. Ben Gordon scored a game-high 37 points off the bench for Chicago, while Andres Nocioni delivered 21 points. Kirk Hinrich chipped in with 16 points and 14 assists. A day after Chicago shipped Ben Wallace and Joe Smith out of town Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas cracked the starting lineup. Noah responded with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Thomas had 18 points and 11 rebounds. The two youngsters may not stay in the starting five once the Bulls' new acquisitions arrive; Chicago acquired Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, Cedric Simmons, and Shannon Brown at the deadline, but none of them suited up on Friday night.

The Rockets extended their winning streak to 11 games on Friday night after upsetting New Orleans 100-80 as a 4-point road underdog. Tracy McGrady threw down 34 points on the Hornets, while Yao Ming also had a big night with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Point guard Rafer Alston just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 assists. Houston did not have Bobby Jackson in the lineup Friday night after he was acquired from New Orleans in a trade a day earlier. He is expected to make his debut in a Houston uniform on Sunday.

The Rockets defeated the Bulls in Chicago back in December 116-98 as a 1.5-point favorite. Tracy McGrady netted 20 points for Houston and Luis Scola chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kirk Hinrich had 22 points for Chicago and Luol Deng delivered 21 points.

San Jose at Pittsburgh (+105, 5.5)

It seems like every game the Penguins have played lately has been huge. They've had no trouble stepping up to the challenge, but games like the 5-4 comeback win over Montreal on Thursday are the kind that can leave a team drained. It doesn't help that they traveled back home to face first-place Ottawa last night and now have to face a well-rested San Jose squad without a day off to recover. Pittsburgh is 4-7 on zero days rest.

                        Pick: Sharks

Florida at New York Rangers (-191, 5.5)

Maybe the Panthers are just squeamish. It be that the sight of Richard Zednik's blood spilled all over the ice last Thursday was too much for the team. Maybe that's why they've lost three of their four games since the incident. But more likely it's because they've been making due without Zednik, Sephen Weiss and Josef Stumpel - three forwards who have accounted for a combined 27 goals on what was already a pretty toothless offense. And as the losses pile up, morale is getting worse. The Rangers have scored 13 goals in their last three games and shouldn't have trouble potting a few more against a rapidly regressing Panthers team.

                        Pick: Rangers

                        Colorado at Edmonton (+100, 5.5)

In a city where hockey is all that matters, the good people of Edmonton must be feeling a little more cheery since their Oilers finally started collecting a few home wins. Although their overall record at Rexall Place is only slightly above .500, they've won their last three home games in convincing fashion, outscoring their visitors by a combined 13-3. It must be nice to be home after dropping three games in their recent four-game road trip, but they have to face a rejuvenated Avalanche team. Colorado was struggling to find the net with some of their top goal-scorers out of the lineup, but the return of Paul Stasny, who scored his 18th goal of the season in his first game back, will help. Colorado has beaten the Oilers in five of their last six trips to Edmonton.

                        Pick: Avalanche

                          Detroit at Phoenix (-2, 199)

Shaq's second game for Phoenix was an 85-77 win over the Boston Celtics, which may have proved some of his doubters wrong. The veteran had a game-high 14 rebounds as the Suns held the Celts to a season-low 77 points.

But the real story of the night was another excellent outing from Amare Stoudemire. The 6-foot-10 forward scored 28 points against the Celtics and is averaging 30.2 over his last five games. His teammates believe the addition of Shaq will help him get even better.

"He's doing what great players do," Grant Hill told the Associated Press. "It was happening before, but it's really happening now that Shaq has come."

If the Suns can recreate that performance on Sunday, then the Pistons could be in for a long day. They have looked far from convincing on the road of late, covering the spread just once in their last eight games away from home.

                          Pick: Suns

                          Memphis at Cleveland (-11 1/2, 196)

The Cavs got a hard-fought 90-89 win over Washington in their last game, but thanks to that much talked-about deadline trade they will have a completely revamped lineup against Memphis. Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West are all eligible to make their Cleveland debuts on Sunday night.

Wallace and Smith arrived from the Bulls, while Szczerbiak and West were with Seattle and the quartet was acquired with the sole purpose of giving LeBron James some help on offense.

The Cavs star player has averaged a league-high 30.2 points per game with limited help this season. Those numbers might go down with his new supporting cast, but the idea is that the team gets better as a whole. Memphis has lost four straight to Cleveland, covering just once, and will struggle against the new-look Cavs.

                          Pick: Memphis

                          Boston at Portland (6 1/2, 186)

The Celtics' Western road trip is not quite a disaster yet, but it's quickly getting there. They were 16-0 against the West going into this week's action, but have already lost to Denver, Golden State and Phoenix.

That's their first three-game losing streak and against Phoenix on Friday they were held to a season-low 77 points. Kevin Garnett led the Celts with 19 points in that loss, but Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined to make only two of their first 21 shots. They finished with eight and 11 points respectively.

With that said, it's still hard to see Boston dropping a fourth straight on Sunday. It has won and covered in five consecutive games against Portland - a team that has lost six of its last seven games overall.

                          Pick: Trail Blazers
