          Hot Lines

          Friday, February 22

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Ice picks: Today’s NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Edmonton at Dallas (-215)

The history between these teams goes back to the 1997 playoffs when the Oilers barely squeaked into the postseason and then went on to knock out the top-seeded Stars in seven games. Since then, the rivalry has been dominated by the Stars – particularly in the last two seasons. Dallas has won eight of the last 10 meetings, including all three matchups this season. Edmonton is back at home after playing three straight on the road but their 15-14-0-1 record at home isn’t nearly as impressive as Dallas’ 18-12-2-1 mark on the road.

          Pick: Stars

          Detroit at Calgary (-105)

If you’re a value hunter, this is your Holy Grail. The Wings’ recent losing streak (which was snapped with a 4-0 win in Colorado on Monday) has cast some doubt on the team, but come on. They still have an impeccable 42-15-1-4 record, they’ve beaten Calgary in five straight meetings and they’re working on three days’ rest here while the Flames just finished a five-game road trip on Wednesday. You’re not going to get a better price on a great team like this again.

          Pick: Wings

          St. Louis at Anaheim (-220)

The last time these teams played, Manny Legace single-handedly shut down the Ducks as he stopped all 30 shots for the shutout and the 1-0 win as a +125 home dog. That’s why the Blues +190 is so tempting here. Sometimes a hot goalie can make all the difference and Legace is playing as well as any in the league with a 2.24 goals-against average. But even though the Blues have somehow managed to sneak away with wins in three of their last four meetings with Anaheim, betting on St. Louis out west is just too risky. They’re 7-17 on the road versus their own conference. Not so good.

          Pick: Anaheim

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Friday’s NBA picks
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Philadelphia at Orlando (-7, 203 ½)

The Sixers have won six of their last seven games, pulling themselves into the Eastern Conference playoff race. They travel to Florida on the back of one of their biggest wins of the season.

Philly routed the Knicks 124-84 Wednesday night, covering the spread for the ninth time in 11 games. The Sixers scored 72 points in the first half and had nine steals in the first quarter alone.

They face a much tougher contest against Orlando, but recent form suggests they have every chance of at least covering the spread. Philly has covered in four of its last five games against the Magic and the visiting team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.

            Pick: Philadelphia

            Dallas at Memphis (+8, 197)

Jason Kidd’s Dallas debut wasn’t exactly the stuff of legend, but things should improve now that he has a game under his belt. The Mavs were beaten 104-93 by New Orleans Wednesday night and the best guard on show was actually the Hornets’ Chris Paul.

Kidd had eight points, six rebounds and five assists in just over 36 minutes on the court, but there were some flashes of things to come. He connected with Josh Howard on an alley-oop layup 12 seconds into the game and found Dirk Nowitzki running the lane for a dunk in the second quarter.

The Mavs will be hoping for more of the same on Friday when they look to continue their domination of Memphis. They have won 14 straight games against the Grizzlies, covering the spread in eight of the last nine at the FedEx Forum.

            Pick: Memphis

            Denver at Chicago (+5, 208 1/2)

The Nuggets are one of the best offensive teams in the NBA and that should be enough to see them past a struggling Bulls lineup. Denver is averaging 107.0 points per outing, while Chicago has scored fewer than 100 points in three of its last four.

The Nuggets’ ability to rack up the points helped them past one of the hottest teams in the nation in their last game. They beat Boston 124-118 as a one-point home favorite on Tuesday. Carmelo Anthony had 29 points in that win, while Allen Iverson added 28 and that duo will prove too much for the Bulls.

The last time these teams met, Iverson and Anthony scored a combined 48 points in a 112-91 Nuggets win on Nov. 20. That was the eighth time in the last nine games between these teams that Denver covered the spread.

            Pick: Denver

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia 76ers at Orlando Magic (7 PM ET)

Philadelphia will be going for its 7th win in 8 games and has covered 4 of the last 5 meetings with Orlando despite losing 4 of of those games SU. The Magic snuck away with a 108-106 road win back on February 1st in the first meeting this season. EDGE: 76ERS
Orlando is coming off one of its worst defensive efforts of the season in a 127-110 loss at Toronto on Wednesday. “There was not one thing they did that we could guard,” Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I didn’t like our level of competitiveness. I thought we were hanging our heads and stuff.” EDGE: 76ERS
76ers are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
Road team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
Underdog is 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings.
The OVER is 11-5 in Orlando's last 16 games vs. Atlantic Division.

Toronto Raptors at New York Knicks (7 PM ET)

This is the first game of a home-and-home series between the teams as they meet again Sunday in Toronto. The Raptors have won 5 of the last 6 meetings, going 4-2 ATS. EDGE: RAPTORS
New York did not make any deals before the trade deadline, which means the Knicks will play the rest of the season out with their current roster. Head coach Isiah Thomas said "my guy's minds were elsewhere" and insiders believe they should be able to focus on closing out the season strong knowing they are staying put. SLIGHT EDGE: KNICKS
Knicks are 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 games vs. Atlantic Division.
Raptors are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
Home team is 13-6-1 ATS in the last 20 meetings
The OVER is 7-1 in Toronto's last 8 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 7-2 in Toronto's last 9 games overall.
The OVER is 9-4 in New York's last 13 Friday games.

Houston Rockets at New Orleans Hornets (8 PM ET)

Houston will try to win 11 straight games for the first time since opening the 1993-94 season at 15-0. The Rockets went on to win back-to-back NBA championships, and they are just 4 games behind the West-leading Hornets for the best record in the conference. EDGE: ROCKETS
These teams swapped key reserves on Thursday, with New Orleans getting Mike James and Bonzi Wells for Bobby Jackson and rookie Adam Haluska. Wells was averaging 9.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in 22.1 minutes per game for the Rockets while Jackson re-joins former head coach Rick Adelman, who he played for in Sacramento for 5 seasons. Houston also picked up former Slam Dunk champ Gerald Green for Kirk Snyder on Thursday. SLIGHT EDGE: ROCKETS
Rockets are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
Rockets are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 Friday games.
Hornets are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Hornets are 42-20-1 ATS in their last 63 games overall.
Road team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
Underdog is 16-5 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
The OVER is 11-5-1 in New Orleans' last 17 games vs. Southwest Division.
The UNDER is 39-18-1 in Houston's last 58 games vs. Southwest Division

Milwaukee Bucks at Detroit Pistons (8 PM ET)

Detroit has surprisingly dropped its first 2 games after the All-Star break and will be trying to avoid a home-and-home sweep by Milwaukee back home at The Palace. The Pistons allowed 100 or more points in consecutive games for the first time since November and should be primed for a little revenge after a 103-98 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday. “They’re going to remember this one,” Bucks center Andrew Bogut said. “They’re going to try to blow us out of their gym.” BIG EDGE: PISTONS
The OVER is 8-3 in Milwaukee's last 11 games vs. Central Division.
The OVER is 6-2 in Detroit's last 8 games vs. Eastern Conference.
The OVER is 11-4 in the last 15 meetings.

Washington Wizards at Cleveland Cavaliers (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

Cavs star LeBron James has been a one-man show of late. In 9 games this month, James is averaging 30 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists per game. He has also put together consecutive triple-doubles in the last 2 games and could also be extra motivated after Cleveland pulled off a blockbuster trade on Thursday, reeling in Ben Wallace and Joe Smith from Chicago and Wally Szczerbiak from Seattle. BIG EDGE: CAVS
The Wizards have been struggling to win lately, losing 9 of their last 10 games. Forward Antawn Jamison said: “We’ve got to play with a sense of urgency.” All-Star forward Caron Butler has missed 6 straight games and 9 of 11 with a strained left hip flexor, and his status is uncertain for this contest. The Wizards are 2-8 this season when Butler doesn't play. EDGE: CAVS
Cleveland will be short-handed tonight following Thursday's trade, as the Cavs had to sign a couple D-league players just to have 8 available for this game. EDGE: WIZARDS
Wizards are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The OVER is 8-0 in Washington's last 8 games vs. Eastern Conference.
The OVER is 8-1 in Washington's last 9 road games.
The UNDER is 13-6 in the last 19 meetings at Cleveland.

Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

Chicago dealt big men Ben Wallace and Joe Smith to Cleveland on Thursday in exchange for guard Larry Hughes and forward Drew Gooden. It's unclear if Hughes and Gooden will be in uniform, but the Bulls did get leading scorers Luol Deng and Ben Gordon back in Tuesday's loss at New Jersey. Deng scored 13 points in 19 minutes and had missed 16 of the previous 21 games. SLIGHT EDGE: BULLS
Denver's Carmelo Anthony is averaging 30.1 points and 8.6 rebounds since returning from a sprained ankle on February 2nd. The Nuggets are also averaging 112.1 points in their last 8 games. BIG EDGE: NUGGETS & OVER
Nuggets are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
Nuggets are 37-18 ATS in their last 55 vs. Central Division.
Nuggets are 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
Bulls are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Bulls are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 home games.
The OVER is 7-3 in Chicago's last 10 games vs. Northwest Division.
The OVER is 6-2 in Denver's last 8 games overall.

Boston Celtics at Phoenix Suns (ESPN | 10:30 PM ET)

The Suns are tied with Golden State for the league lead scoring, averaging 110 points per game. Meanwhile, Boston has turned in its 2 worst defensive performances of the season in the first 2 contests on its 5-game road trip, allowing 124 points at Denver Tuesday and 119 at Golden State on Wednesday. EDGE: SUNS & OVER
Boston forward Kevin Garnett is fresh off his best offensive performance since returning from an abdominal injury, scoring 17 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in 30 minutes of action against Golden State. Garnett's two highest-scoring games in the NBA have come against Phoenix, scoring 47 points in 2005 and 44 in 2007 with the Timberwolves. EDGE: CELTICS
Boston is averaging 107 points in its last 10 games, and Paul Pierce is scoring 27 ppg in his last 5 games alone. Thanks to Phoenix's run-and-gun style, the Suns haven’t been able to stop anyone on defense, allowing 105 ppg this season. EDGE: OVER
New Suns center Shaquille O’Neal had 15 points and 9 rebounds in his team debut against the Lakers on Wednesday night. Phoenix head coach Mike D'Antoni was encouraged by his performance, saying Shaq “got stronger as the game went on.” With Shaq in the lineup, Amare Stoudemire also gets to play his natural power forward position, and he scored a team-high 37 points and grabbed 15 boards with O’Neal in the lineup. EDGE: SUNS
Celtics are 36-15-1 ATS in their last 52 road games.
Celtics are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
Road team is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 17-4 in PHO last 21 vs. Eastern Conference.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Davidson at Winthrop (ESPN2 | 7 PM ET)

Davidson brings a 16-game winning streak into the first "Bracket Buster" game of 2008. The Wildcats are 10-6 ATS during that stretch and figure to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament regardless of whether or not they falter down the stretch. This game is viewed to be much bigger for Winthrop, especially as a home underdog. EDGE: WINTHROP
Davidson is 36-17-1 ATS in its last 54 games overall.
Davidson is 37-18 ATS in its last 55 road games.
Winthrop is 12-5 ATS in its last 17 games overall.
