    Weekend Sports Preview

Teams around the NBA will continue to break in their trade acquisitions this weekend, with regular action in the NHL, college hoops, NASCAR, and professional golf as well.

The Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks will trot their newest stars out on the court again on Friday night, but both teams will be looking for better results than they got in the debuts of Shaquille O'Neal and Jason Kidd on Wednesday. Phoenix will play host to the Boston Celtics on Friday, while Dallas will travel to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies.

O'Neal scored 15 points and grabbed nine boards in his first game for the Suns on Wednesday, but his team still fell 130-124 to the rival Los Angeles Lakers. Amare Stoudemire had 37 points and 15 boards for Phoenix in that loss, while Steve Nash poured in 26 points and added eight assists. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 41 points.

Kidd picked up just eight points and added five assists on Wednesday night in his first game with Dallas since the complicated trade was completed, and the Mavericks were beaten 104-93 on the road by the New Orleans Hornets. Dirk Nowitzki tossed in 31 points for Dallas in that contest, while Chris Paul paced the Hornets with his 31 points.

New Orleans returns to action on Friday as well, as they'll get a visit from the Houston Rockets. Other games around the NBA on a busy Friday include New Jersey at Indiana, Philadelphia at Orlando, Sacramento at Charlotte, Toronto at New York, Washington at Cleveland, Milwaukee at Detroit, Denver at Chicago, Utah at the Los Angeles Clippers, and Portland at Seattle. As well, the Golden State Warriors will host the Atlanta Hawks.

Saturday sees Bryant and the Lakers looking for their seventh straight win when they play a 'road' game against the Clippers. Also on Saturday are Charlotte at Washington, Philadelphia at Miami, Indiana at New Jersey, Denver at Milwaukee, and Atlanta at Utah. As well, the Hornets play for the second night in a row when they face the Spurs.

The Suns and Mavericks are both on the court on Sunday; Phoenix hosts Detroit, and Dallas plays in Minnesota. Other Sunday games include Memphis at Cleveland, Sacramento at Orlando, New York at Toronto, Chicago at Houston, and Boston at Portland, while the Lakers will finish off the night with a road game against the Sonics.

The top game in college hoops this weekend takes place on Saturday night at the FedExForum, where No. 1 Memphis will host No. 2 Tennessee for position in the polls. The Tigers have run their record to an impressive 26-0 this season, while the Vols (24-2) haven't lost since dropping a 72-66 road decision to Kentucky back on January 22.

Other Top 10 action on Saturday includes Oregon at No. 6 UCLA, Oklahoma at No. 7 Texas, No. 4 Kansas at Oklahoma State, St. John's at No. 5 Duke, and No. 16 Drake at No. 8 Butler. Sunday features No. 10 Xavier at Dayton and California at No. 9 Stanford, while Wake Forest will head to Chapel Hill for a contest against No. 3 North Carolina.

A light Friday night on the ice sees only four games taking place around the NHL; Edmonton at Dallas, Detroit at Calgary, Colorado at Phoenix, and St. Louis at Anaheim.

Saturday's sees 22 teams in action, including the top two clubs in the Western Conference; the Dallas Stars will play in Nashville, while the Detroit Red Wings have a road game in Vancouver. Other games on Saturday include the Islanders at New Jersey, Chicago at Los Angeles, Washington at Carolina, the Rangers at Buffalo, Atlanta at Toronto, Columbus at Montreal, Florida at Philadelphia, and Boston at Tampa Bay. As well, the Ottawa Senators will go to Pittsburgh for a meeting with the Penguins.

Seven more games end the league's schedule on Sunday, with Calgary at Minnesota, San Jose at Pittsburgh, New Jersey at Washington, Florida at the Rangers, Colorado at Edmonton, St. Louis at Phoenix, and then Chicago at Anaheim to round out the action.

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will head to California Speedway this weekend for Sunday's Auto Club 500. Ryan Newman took the series' season-opening race at Daytona last weekend, but Matt Kenseth is the two-time defending champion at this event. Jeff Gordon has three wins at California, most recently during the 2004 season.

Finally, the world's top golfers will be participating in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship this weekend - at least, the world's top golfers who have advanced past the first two rounds to Friday's action. Tiger Woods had opened as the 5/2 Vegas favorite to win this tournament.

      Six-pack for Friday

Top six minor league prospects for the Atlanta Braves

      1) Jordan Schafer, OF-- Hitting picked up last year, is seen as eventual CF in Atlanta, but his defense is still way ahead of his offense. Slated to play in AA this year.

      2) Jason Heyward, OF-- Local Atlanta high school kid, got $1.7M to sign, and hit .302 in limited ABs in first pro season.

      3) Brandon Jones, OF-- Hit .300 in half a season in AAA in '07, is seen as eventual LF in Atlanta. Turned down offers to play college football in order to sign with the Braves.

      4) Gorkys Hernandez, OF-- Stole 54 bases in Class A last yr, while in Tiger organization; needs more power, but throws well for centerfielder.

      5) Brent Lillibridge, SS-- Hit .287 with 13 HRs, 42 steals last year; acquired from Pirates in Adam LaRoche trade.

      6) Cole Rohrbough, P-- Struck out 96 guys in 61 IP in first pro season. Batters hit paltry .154 against him last year.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here

        13) Spring training is terrific; you can log on to the website of any big league team, and all is well; Pirates are solid, Chavez and Baldelli are healthy and expecting big years, the specter of Lenny Dinardo starting 25-28 games doesn’t seem to be as horrible as it will in June. One of these years we’re going to take a road trip to see all this optimism in person.

        12) One more thing to daydream about on a cold winter day: 2,430 major league games, 2,125 of which don’t involve the Red Sox or Bronx Bombers. Looking forward to it.

        11) Kansas State star Bill Walker got a technical for hard foul with 9:38 left in close game at Nebraska; it was his fourth foul, so he sat. Even though K-State lost, Walker never got back in game, as coach Martin sent one of his two stars a message: Clean up your act, son. Wildcats have now lost three in row on the road, and they visit reeling Baylor Saturday.

        10) I used Sergio Garcia this week in our little golf pool on the website, so I was unnerved to read that he is carrying two putters in his bag this week, which is highly unusual for a pro. He lost Thursday, so that was a piece of info wish I had learned before making my picks.

        9) Seattle rookie Kevin Durant has an older brother who is a junior at Towson State. Kevin bought his older brother a 2007 Charger when he was drafted last summer.

        8) Pepperdine acted quickly to hire new hoop coach, bringing former Waves’ coach Tom Asbury out of retirement. 62-year old Asbury was 125-59 in Malibu from 1989-94, then moved on to Kansas State. Most recently, he had been an assistant at Alabama.

        7) NFL teams can interview up to 60 players at NFL Combine this week; interviews can last as long as 15 minutes, and can cover anything. There are roughly 320 kids showcasing their skills for teams this week in Indianapolis.

        6) Tampa Bay Rays unveiled plans for a $450M waterfront stadium in St Petersburg, complete with a retractable roof; the plan has the support of Florida governor Crist- they hope to have it ready for 2012, or about the same time Rocco Baldelli is winning the MVP while playing for the Red Sox.

        5) St John’s is going through hard times in hoops, and now they catch Duke coming off of consecutive losses where they allowed 86-96 points. Saturday’s game could get ugly.

        4) Wright State won its last ten hoop games, but last seven were all by six points or less; Raiders are 0-7 against spread as home favorite, almost unheard of for a team with such a good record.

        3) If you’re the Tennessee punter and you break team rules a second time, you lose your scholarship and get suspended for half the season; if you’re the LSU QB, and you break team rules for third time, you get an open-ended suspension in February. Considering that LSU’s 2nd-string QB started his career at Harvard, Ryan Perilloux is likely to get a 4th chance.

        2) Johan Santana is fourth big league pitcher to sign a $100M contract; the first three were Kevin Brown (disaster), Mike Hampton (ongoing disaster), Barry Zito (first year wasn’t good). We’ll see, but everyone from Fred Wilpon to Mr Met is expecting big things in Shea Stadium’s final season.

        1) Not only is Wichita State 4-12 in MVC, they lost their last three games, all in OT; seven of their 12 league losses are by eight or less points. Wonder if Gregg Marshall regrets having left Winthrop, especially with South Carolina job now open for next season. He might have had a shot at it.

Washington Wizards at Cleveland Cavaliers (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

Cavs star LeBron James has been a one-man show of late. In 9 games this month, James is averaging 30 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists per game. He has also put together consecutive triple-doubles in the last 2 games and could also be extra motivated after Cleveland pulled off a blockbuster trade on Thursday, reeling in Ben Wallace and Joe Smith from Chicago and Wally Szczerbiak from Seattle. BIG EDGE: CAVS
The Wizards have been struggling to win lately, losing 9 of their last 10 games. Forward Antawn Jamison said: "We've got to play with a sense of urgency." All-Star forward Caron Butler has missed 6 straight games and 9 of 11 with a strained left hip flexor, and his status is uncertain for this contest. The Wizards are 2-8 this season when Butler doesn't play. EDGE: CAVS

The OVER is 7-3 in Chicago's last 10 games vs. Northwest Division.
The OVER is 6-2 in Denver's last 8 games overall.

Boston Celtics at Phoenix Suns (ESPN | 10:30 PM ET)

The Suns are tied with Golden State for the league lead scoring, averaging 110 points per game. Meanwhile, Boston has turned in its 2 worst defensive performances of the season in the first 2 contests on its 5-game road trip, allowing 124 points at Denver Tuesday and 119 at Golden State on Wednesday. EDGE: SUNS & OVER
Boston forward Kevin Garnett is fresh off his best offensive performance since returning from an abdominal injury, scoring 17 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in 30 minutes of action against Golden State. Garnett's two highest-scoring games in the NBA have come against Phoenix, scoring 47 points in 2005 and 44 in 2007 with the Timberwolves. EDGE: CELTICS
Boston is averaging 107 points in its last 10 games, and Paul Pierce is scoring 27 ppg in his last 5 games alone. Thanks to Phoenix's run-and-gun style, the Suns haven't been able to stop anyone on defense, allowing 105 ppg this season. EDGE: OVER
New Suns center Shaquille O'Neal had 15 points and 9 rebounds in his team debut against the Lakers on Wednesday night. Phoenix head coach Mike D'Antoni was encouraged by his performance, saying Shaq "got stronger as the game went on." With Shaq in the lineup, Amare Stoudemire also gets to play his natural power forward position, and he scored a team-high 37 points and grabbed 15 boards with O'Neal in the lineup. EDGE: SUNS
Celtics are 36-15-1 ATS in their last 52 road games.
Celtics are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
Road team is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
