          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday’s NBA picks
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at New Jersey Nets (+1 1/2)

With the trade of Jason Kidd to Dallas looking imminent, the Nets will likely take the court on Tuesday without their All-Star guard. It’s hard to see how the Nets will win without him.

Kidd missed just 22 games in his five seasons with New Jersey and the Nets lost 16 of them. He leads the team in assists (10.4), rebounds (8.1) and steals (1.5) this season and is putting up 11.3 points per game.

It’s not like things were going peachy with Kidd and the team, either. The Nets have dropped 13 of their last 18 games overall and are 5-13 against the spread over that stretch. The Bulls, meanwhile, covered the spread in six of seven games before the break.

          Pick: Bulls

          L.A. Lakers at Phoenix Suns (-4 1/2, 222)

It seems that Shaquille O’Neal will finally make his Suns debut Wednesday night and it will happen against his former team. Shaq will line up against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, kicking off what should be a titanic battle in the Western Conference.

Shaq averaged 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game with the Heat this season, but has missed 16 straight games with a hip injury. He should be used sparingly in his first game back, which might hand the advantage to a Lakers team that has its own new star.

Pau Gasol has settled in well since his arrival from Memphis, and he's averaging 20.5 points and 8.3 rebounds in his six games with L.A. The Lakers have won, and covered the spread, in five of those.

          Pick: Lakers

Boston Celtics at Golden State Warriors (+2, 216)

Boston showed the strength of their squad with by winning five straight games before the All-Star break without forward Kevin Garnett. He returned to the lineup last night and played only 20 minutes in a loss to the Nuggets. The Warriors, meanwhile, lost to Utah 119-109 last night.

Garnett has been a major part of the Big Three unit that has helped Boston to an NBA-best 41-10 record. He is averaging 19.2 points per game and has team highs in rebounds (9.9) and blocks (1.4) this season.

          Pick: Celtics

Ice picks: Today’s best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders vs. Washington (-150, 5 ½)

There was a good commercial on the other day that was all about Alex Ovechkin chasing history to score 60 goals this season. That would put him up there with some of the greatest names in hockey like Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull, Yzerman, and only a few others.

He currently leads the league in goals with 48 with 22 games remaining.

Chances are good he’ll get a little closer to that goal tonight when he faces a depleted Islanders blueline that just took a huge blow when it lost Andy Sutton for four to six weeks with a hamstring injury. That makes four defenseman out with injuries for New York, which has somehow managed to win four straight games.

Ovechkin has been held off the scoreboard in his last two games and it isn’t very often he’s held scoreless in three straight. The Isles are going to need some goals to keep their winning streak alive tonight.

            Pick: over

            Colorado vs. Anaheim (-220, 5)

If you saw the Avs play the Wings Monday night, it might have brought back some old memories. March 26, 1997 specifically, when Detroit beat Colorado 6-5 in a fight-filled affair that helped make this one of the best rivalries in the 90s.

Tuesday night was a scrapfest again that even had Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock involved in a screaming match with Avs assistant Tony Granato. This time the nastiness started when Colorado’s Ian Laperriere knocked Nicklas Lidstrom out in the first period with a clean, but crushing hit along the boards.

The point to all this is, the Avs went on to lose their next game 3-2 to the Leafs back in 1997 and it’s no surprise. A game like that takes a lot out of a team when you come out on the losing end and now the Avs face what has arguably been the most physical team in hockey the past two seasons – the Ducks.

It’s big chalk, but it might be worth taking tonight. The Avs enter Anaheim on a four-game losing streak, though Paul Stastny and Joe Sakic are expected to return at some point over the five-game road trip that kicks off tonight.

            Pick: Ducks

              Tips and Trends (Updated)
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Toronto Raptors (7 PM ET)

Orlando has won an NBA-best 20 road games this season and is coming off arguably the team's most impressive victory away from home at Detroit on Tuesday. The Magic topped the Pistons 103-85 despite just 8 points from Slam Dunk champ Dwight Howard. EDGE: MAGIC
Toronto point guard Jose Calderon averaged 21.3 points and 9.3 assists in 3 games prior to the All-Star break while Chris Bosh is averaging 32.3 points and 11 rebounds in the last 4 meetings with Orlando. “It’s too bad he missed out on the All-Star game, I think he was overlooked,” Bosh said of Calderon. “He is giving us a lot right now and he just has to continue working, playing with confidence and we are going to go as he goes.” BIG EDGE: RAPTORS
Magic are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against the Atlantic Division.
Magic are 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
Raptors are 24-8 ATS in their last 32 Wednesday games.
The OVER is 6-2 in Toronto’s last 8 games overall.

New York Knicks at Philadelphia 76ers (7 PM ET)

Philadelphia saw a season-high 5-game winning streak go up in flames at Minnesota on Tuesday in a 104-88 loss. The 76ers had won all 5 games at home before the All-Star break, limiting opponents to 84.8 points per game on 39.6 percent shooting. “We lost what we had before the All-Star break - plain and simple,” Philly swingman Andre Iguodala said. “We have to try and get it back quick.” SLIGHT EDGE: 76ERS
New York set a team record by scoring 23 points in overtime on Tuesday to pull off a 113-100 victory. However, the Knicks have dropped 6 straight games at Philadelphia, including a 101-90 loss back on December 7th. EDGE: 76ERS
Knicks are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
76ers are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Home team is 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings.
Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Indiana Pacers (7:00 PM ET)

Cleveland star LeBron James posted his fifth triple double of the season on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough in a 93-85 home loss to Houston. James nearly pulled off the feat in winning the All-Star MVP award for the second time in 3 years on Sunday, and his team has beaten Indiana 5 straight times both SU & ATS. EDGE: CAVS
Cavs are 14-4 ATS in their last 18 games against the Central Division.
Pacers are 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Favorite is 10-1-2 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
Home team is 9-2-2 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets (8 PM ET)

Jason Kidd will play his first game in his return to Dallas after the Mavs completed a trade with New Jersey on Tuesday. Kidd started his career with the team back in 1994 before being dealt to Phoenix and later landing with the Nets. He will be squaring off against the player most view as the heir apparent as the best young point guard in the NBA in New Orleans' Chris Paul. SLIGHT EDGE: MAVS
Paul is averaging 19.4 points in 9 games lifetime vs. Dallas, but the Hornets have earned just one victory. That came this season back on December 1st behind 33 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds from Paul. EDGE: HORNETS
Mavs are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Hornets are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 Wednesday games.
The UNDER is 13-5 in the Mavs last 18 road games.
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in the last 9 meetings.

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (ESPN | 9 PM ET)

Shaquille O'Neal is expected to make his first start in a Phoenix uniform against former teammate Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. O'Neal has not played in nearly a month due to a hip injury, as his last game came against Cleveland back on January 21st when he was with Miami. EDGE: LAKERS
LA is coming off an easy 29-point home win against Atlanta on Tuesday, as Lamar Odom was the only Laker to play more than 31 minutes. They are 7-4 ATS when playing without rest this season and should be very fresh after most of the team's starters rested the entire fourth quarter. EDGE: LAKERS
The Suns have won 4 of their last 6 home games yet are 1-4-1 ATS during that stretch. They are coming off a 109-97 win over a depleted Dallas team prior to the All-Star break, which was their only cover over that period. EDGE: LAKERS
Lakers are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Atlanta Hawks at Sacramento Kings (10 PM ET)

Atlanta's Mike Bibby struggled in his first game with his new team on Tuesday and now gets to face his old team for the first time since he played with Vancouver. Bibby had just 5 points and 3 assists against the Lakers in a 122-93 loss in his first game with the Hawks and knows it will be tough going back to Sacramento. “It was the second day I was with the guys, you know - iIt will come,” said Bibby. EDGE: KINGS
Sacramento is coming off an impressive 105-94 win at Portland on Tuesday, making a smooth adjustment playing without Bibby. “After the trade, we feel like we have our team,” Kings leading scorer Kevin Martin said. “We have to continue to build - starting (Wednesday)." The team welcomed back Francisco Garcia, who had missed the previous 3 games with a back injury. Garcia played a key role in beating the Blazers, scoring 23 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in less than 22 minutes. EDGE: KINGS
Hawks are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 road games.
Kings are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Home team is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
The OVER is 8-3 in Atlanta's last 11 games.

Boston Celtics at Golden State Warriors (10:30 PM ET)

Boston fell to 16-1 against Western Conference opponents with a 124-118 loss at Denver on Tuesday. Kevin Garnett returned to the lineup, but it didn't matter as the Celtics had their worst defensive performance of the season. Garnett scored 4 points in almost 21 minutes of action after missing the previous 9 games with an abdominal injury. EDGE: WARRIORS
Golden State stopper Stephen Jackson sprained his left ankle in the third quarter of Tuesday's 119-109 loss at Utah on Tuesday. Jackson's status is unknown and could be critical against Boston's Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. EDGE: CELTICS
Celtics are 48-20-1 ATS in their last 69 road games.
Warriors are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
Underdog is 12-3 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
The OVER is 9-3 in Boston's last 12 games against the Western Conference.
