    Six-pack for Monday

My six favorite college basketball teams to watch........this is a subjective list, not the best teams, just the ones I enjoy watching with the ESPN Full Court package......

-- Stanford-- Fun to see Cardinal perimeter guys trying not to screw things up until they can get the ball to one of the Lopez twins. Extremely tentative guards.

-- Vanderbilt-- They play fast, shoot lot of 3's, but also has couple of lumbering big guys who pose a threat inside.

-- Oregon-- Erratic Ducks run up and down, shoot lot of 3's and can beat anyone or lose to anyone on a given night.

-- Missouri-- Once Mike Anderson gets more of his guys to Columbia, pressing, running style will be more effective. Hr also has to keep his guys out of nightclubs.

-- Kansas State-- Michael Beasley will be in NBA next year, but he'll get to play in NCAA's before he leaves.

-- Baylor-- If Bears ever played Oregon, I'd be really, really enthusiastic about playing the over. Baylor plays as many as four guards at a time, and they all like to shoot.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday..........

      13) OJ Mayo had his worst game as a collegian Sunday night, as UCLA held him to four points, while forcing 10 turnovers as Bruins beat USC 56-46, avenging an earlier loss to Trojans.

      12) Wake Forest brought their A-game to Joel Coliseum and handed Duke its second loss of season, 86-73. Duke had five guys foul out of game, as Deacons took 38 free throws.

      11) 16 of Phil Mickelson's 33 career PGA wins have come on the west coast.

      10) Kenny G, the jazz musician, has a son who is a ballboy for the Pepperdine basketball team; he played national anthem at the Santa Clara-Pepperdine game Saturday night.

      9) Pamela Anderson's sons are batboys for the baseball team at Pepperdine; Malibu must be a fun place to live.

      8) Notre Dame has a nice hoop team, but they're protected by the refs; good lord, this Harangody kid collided with Rutgers' point guard with 9:59 to go Sunday after the PG grabbed a rebound, would have been his 4th foul, an obvious call, but the ref ignored it, except to stop game to see if the Rutgers player was OK. In a close game, it made all the difference that Harangody stayed in the game. Irish wound up winning by 3.

      7) Half the cars in the first Daytona 500 were convertibles.

      6) NASCAR vehicles get 42 laps at Daytona on a tank of gas, which is roughly 105 miles, not very good gas mileage.

      5) Daytona champ Ryan Newman was 30-1 to win Sunday.

      4) Blackhawks are improved this season, couple games over .500; they had just their fifth sellout of season Sunday, as the Colorado Avalanche lost 2-1 at United Center.

      3) Wouldn't it make more sense if PGA Tour's FedEx playoffs dealt with money won, instead of this goofy point system? How many different sets of statistics do they need to keep?

      2) If you'd like to get into a little golf pool we have every year send me an e-mail; we pick three guys a week for 18 events, can only use same guy once a year, and then we have 4-week playoff at the end of the season. Lot of fun for not much $$$

      1) Intriguing first-round match at World Match Play this week is Eldrick Woods vs JB Holmes. Lot of long drives in that one.

                Monday NHL Gameday

Presidents' Day action includes the top President's Trophy contender on Monday, with three other games on the league's holiday schedule. Here is your NHL Gameday . . .

Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils, 1:00pm ET

The Hurricanes have won three games in a row to move back atop the Southeast standings, with key divisional games against the Thrashers and the Capitals coming up later this week. Carolina rallied past the Panthers 5-4 on Saturday night, with Ray Whitney scoring the game winner. Eric Staal tallied two points in the comeback victory.

The Devils are back in first place in the Atlantic Division, thanks to three wins over their past four games. New Jersey knocked off conference-leading Ottawa twice last week, and they beat Carolina 6-1 back on February 9. Paul Martin scored two goals in that victory over the Hurricanes, while Martin Brodeur stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced.

San Jose Sharks at New York Islanders, 2:00pm ET

The Sharks are on a tour of the greater New York area - they played at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, they'll battle the Islanders on Monday night, and they'll then pay a visit to New Jersey on Wednesday. San Jose is battling Anaheim for second place in the Pacific, and they're trying to make up some ground on the first-place Stars.

Three straight wins has helped the Islanders in the Eastern Conference standings, but there are still many teams standing between them and the No. 8 seed in the playoffs. New York picked up victories over the Flyers and Maple Leafs last week, and they beat the Thrashers 4-1 on Saturday. Rick DiPietro had to make just nine saves in that victory.

Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche, 8:00pm ET

Red Wings fans are getting antsy about the team's play of late, but Detroit still has a comfortable lead atop the Western Conference standings. The Red Wings have already taken on the Avalanche once this month - they pulled out a 2-0 win over their rival back on February 1. Henrik Zetterberg and Kris Draper scored for Detroit in that slim victory.

Colorado hasn't been playing that well in February either, which has jeopardized their chances of making the playoffs in the Western Conference. Peter Budaj stopped 34 of 35 Detroit shots in that loss back on February 1 with most of their top scorers out of the lineup. Forward Ryan Smyth (ankle injury) has since returned to the ice for the squad.

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings, 10:30pm ET

The Coyotes put an end to their four-game losing streak with consecutive wins over the Stars and Kings last week. Phoenix knocked off Dallas 5-2 last Thursday night, and they got past Los Angeles 4-3 on Saturday. Ed Jovanovski, Joel Perrault, Daniel Winnik, and Radim Vrbata all scored for Phoenix in the victory, while Ilya Bryzgalov made 22 saves.

The Kings' loss to Phoenix on Saturday was their third in five games, and they have a league-low 53 points heading into this matchup on Monday night. Raitis Ivanans, Dustin Brown, and Alexander Frolov had the Los Angeles goals against Phoenix, while Dan Cloutier was pulled in favor of Jason LaBarbera after allowing three goals on 21 shots.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      College funds: Monday's best bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Georgetown at Providence (+5, 133.5)

The eighth-ranked Hoyas look to avoid losing three consecutive road games for the first time in two years when they face the lowly Friars in a Big East matchup Monday.

Georgetown (20-4, 10-3) is one of only four Big East teams with a winning road record in conference play (4-3), but it is in danger of losing three straight away from home for the first time since Feb. 16-March 4, 2006. The Hoyas lost 77-70 at Syracuse on Saturday, one week after a 59-51 road loss to Louisville.

"Road wins have been difficult," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "You can't be negligent in any area in our league this year."

Providence, meanwhile, has five players averaging at least 10 points, but it has lost three straight and seven of eight. The Friars are tied with St. John's for 13th place in the Big East, putting them in danger of missing the conference tournament.

                      Pick: Georgetown

Xavier at Rhode Island (+2.5, 151)

After surviving yet another close call, the 12th-ranked Musketeers should again be in for a challenge when they visit Rhode Island in a league matchup Monday night.

Xavier (21-4, 9-1) won 62-60 at Charlotte on Wednesday for its seventh straight victory and 13th in 14 games. That run has given the Musketeers a two-game lead over St. Joseph's in the A-10, but getting to that spot hasn't been easy.

Josh Duncan had a career-high 25 points Wednesday and hit the clinching 3-pointer with 15.9 seconds to give Xavier a four-point lead. That effort came one game after B.J. Raymond hit a go-ahead 3 with 45 seconds left and Stanley Burrell made two free throws with 13 seconds to play in a 76-72 win over St. Joseph's on Feb. 10.

Rhode Island, tied for third in the A-10, fell 92-89 in overtime at Temple on Wednesday for its second defeat in three games.

Will Daniels had 26 points for the Rams. The 6-foot-8 senior is averaging a team-leading 18.4 points on the season and 21.0 in his last three contests. He's averaging 13.8 in four games versus Xavier.

Rhode Island has lost its last 15 games versus ranked opponents since a 70-63 win over then-No. 21 Utah on Dec. 2, 1998.

                      Pick: Rhode Island

                      Texas A&M at Texas (-4, 137.5)

The 16th-ranked Aggies will be trying to bounce back from their first loss in six games on Monday when they visit the 11th-ranked Longhorns.

Texas A&M (20-5, 6-4 Big 12) beat then-No. 10 Texas 80-63 in College Station on Jan. 30 to improve to 3-3 in conference play. The win came four days after a 59-56 victory at Oklahoma State that ended a demoralizing three-game losing streak.

The Aggies lost by 15 points at Texas Tech on Jan. 16 and 21 points at Kansas State three days later before falling in five overtimes to Baylor on Jan. 23.

"This helps a lot," Josh Carter said after scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the win over Texas. "I think some of us lost some confidence with the losses."

The Aggies used the momentum they gained in that win to reel off three more victories before Saturday's 59-54 home loss to the Cowboys ended their five-game winning streak.

Since losing to the Aggies, the Longhorns have won five straight, including Saturday's 82-77 win at Baylor. Damion James had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Texas, which had five players score in double figures.

However, the Longhorns did show signs of fatigue, allowing Baylor to nearly come back from a 14-point deficit in the final 3 minutes.

"Everybody gets tired," said D.J. Augustin, who had eight points and 10 assists. "We were out there trying to fight through it and doing what we had to do to win. I have great teammates that stepped up and were doing their job, and that is why we got a win."

                      Pick: Texas

The Carolina Hurricanes certainly have shown they can win without Rod Brind'Amour.

Now, the Southeast Division leaders try for their longest winning streak of the season when they visit the New Jersey Devils.

Brind'Amour tore a ligament in his left knee in Thursday's 4-2 win over Pittsburgh and is expected to miss at least four months. He is likely out for the rest of the regular season, and the best-case scenario would have him rejoining the team late in the playoffs.

"Before every game in the room here it feels like a playoff game," said Joe Corvo, who has an assist in each of his two games since being acquired from Ottawa last week along with forward Patrick Eaves. "Good things can only happen when you're playing that hard, when you feel like there is that much on the line."

Maybe, but Carolina’s injury troubles are bound to catch up with them and this is a tough spot against the tight-checking Devils, who pounded the Hurricanes 6-1 the last time they hooked up.

                              Pick: Devils

                              Detroit at Colorado (+125, 5.5)

The Red Wings (41-15-5) own the best record in the league, but they have not won since a 3-2 overtime victory at Minnesota on Feb. 5. By dropping its last six games, Detroit is riding its worst losing streak since a seven-game skid from Jan. 14-30, 1991.

The Red Wings, who are coming off Sunday's 1-0 loss in Dallas, have scored more than two goals only once during the losing streak while getting outscored by a 21-10 margin. Henrik Zetterberg, who leads the team with 33 goals and 71 points, has not scored in five straight games after netting six goals in his previous six. Detroit has a quick turnaround after yesterday’s matinee loss.

"It's terrible, what can you say," Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom said. "We have to find a way to get out of this slump."

The Avalanche fell 2-1 in Chicago on Sunday for their third straight loss - one shy of their season high. Jaroslav Hlinka scored with 2:25 left in the third period for Colorado, which has scored just once in each of the three defeats. Jose Theodore, who has lost his last four starts against the Red Wings, made 25 saves.

                              Pick: Colorado

San Jose at New York Islanders (+115, 5)

The San Jose Sharks haven't been defeated much on the road this season. They haven't lost at Nassau Coliseum in 12 years.

After suffering a rare road defeat in the opener of an eight-game trip, the Sharks look to bounce back against the New York Islanders on Monday as the teams meet at Nassau Coliseum for the first time since 2001.

San Jose (31-19-8) has the fewest road losses in the league (six), but began its longest road trip of the season with a 3-1 defeat to the New York Rangers on Sunday. It was the Sharks' first game at Madison Square Garden since Dec. 16, 2002, and they fell to 2-6-1 with one tie all-time there.

"Hopefully this will be our only loss on this trip," said San Jose center Joe Thornton, who notched his 500th career assist. "That's the way we have to look at it. If we continue to keep on getting better on this trip we'll be fine."

New York's offense, meanwhile, has been red-hot, scoring a total of 13 goals en route to winning its last three games. The Islanders' winning streak follows a seven-game skid (0-6-1), when they scored just 11 goals.

Miroslav Satan, Ruslan Fedotenko, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Sean Bergenheim scored for New York in a 4-1 win over Atlanta on Saturday night.

                              Pick: San Jose
