News and Notes from around the net:

All-Star 2008: 10 Who Could Be First Timers
But just as the All-Star game is about collecting the players in the prime of their careers for a mutual celebration, it's also about recognizing the players who will have the proverbial torch passed down to them and sometimes it's just a chance to give props to a guy who is putting it all together and having a career year. Al Harrington, Andre Iguodala, Richard Jefferson, Al Jefferson, Chris Kaman, Corey Magette, Kevin Martin, Chris Paul, Zack Randolph and Deron Williams.

NBA Allows Their Stars to Shine
The NBA All-Star Game showcases the most supremely talented players in the sport in a format that more closely resembles a "real" game than the All-Star Games in other sports do. All-Star statistics do not have the same cachet as regular season and playoff numbers but it is interesting to look at which players have excelled in the midseason classic. Each era of NBA history has a few players who have performed particularly well in All-Star competition.

NBA All-Star Game could be in Orlando's future
Martins also said that he would expect for the Magic to be part of a Central Florida bidding process to land the NBA All-Star Weekend in 2012, during the second season the Magic are in the new arena.

NBA Reveals 2008 All-Star New Orleans Logo
The logo features the Hornets' Mardi Gras colors of teal, purple and gold. It also includes several distinct New Orleans touches, including brass instruments that acknowledge the city's rich musical history, as well as a depiction of the wrought iron material commonly used in Big Easy balconies.

Stern says NBA wants to do more than just All-Star game for New Orleans
"Although we're happy to participate with the tourism industry to make it better and to demonstrate the vibrancy of it, we'd also like to find a way to cross over and make more of a contribution to what seems to be picking up steam of developments in New Orleans." - Stern said -

Tax deal for NBA All-Star Game?
State may waive $400K in sales taxes to help Phoenix land 2009 contest. NBA commissioner David Stern selects the host for the game and is expected to announce his 2009 choice this summer.

David Stern: NBA to Look Into Adding H-O-R-S-E to All-Star Weekend
We're open to it. I think we are continually looking for different ways to showcase our players skills. One issue there is competitiveness! We might get somebody so hot they will embarrass everybody else. But we will look into it -said David Stern during a chat n ESPN-

A bit less glitter for the NBA All-Stars
With ratings for the NBA falling on cable, no one expected Sunday's All-Star Game to produce huge numbers. Perhaps the best news for TNT is that it didn't fall even more.

Four ways to improve All-Star Weekend
The league needs to make sure the weekend remains fun for everyone -- I loved the dance numbers each starting five broke into during the introductions. That should be standard practice.

A giant snore. NBA All-Star Game and 'events' have become a joke
The NBA needs to spend less time putting together rap concerts at halftime and more time putting together a great game. Maybe the league needs to follow in the footsteps of Major League Baseball and give home court advantage in the NBA Finals to the winning conference. Maybe then the players would guard someone.

With Jason Kidd still in limbo in the on-going trade to Dallas, Kidd will represent the East in this contest. Caron Butler will miss this game due to a hip injury, while Kevin Garnettt will be inactive as well due to his abdominal strain.

        NBA All-Star Game Preview

With the slam-dunk contest in the books and the three-point shootout put to bed, the real NBA All-Star Game goes on Sunday between the finest players from the East and the West.

Last season on neutral ground in Las Vegas, the West beat up on the East in a 153-132 victory. Kobe Bryant poured in a game-high 31 points and also had five rebounds and six assists to earn All-Star MVP honors for the second time. Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony also got in on the act, with Stoudemire adding 29 points and nine rebounds while Anthony had 20 points and nine boards. The East were led by their young guns, as LeBron James scored a team-high 28 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists while Dwight Howard kicked in 20 points and 12 rebounds.

All of those NBA superstars will be back for this year’s game, except that Bryant may not see his usual hearty dose of all-star minutes. Last week Bryant suffered a torn ligament in his right pinkie finger. Bryant chose to forego surgery (which would have sidelined him up to six weeks), and instead try rest and treatment while also playing through the pain. The injury forced Bryant to skip Saturday’s three-point shootout, but league officials expect him to take part in Sunday’s game. It’s highly unlikely that Byron Scott, coach of the Western Conference, would send Bryant out for his usual minutes with an injury, so Bryant's chances of collecting a third All-Star MVP trophy look doubtful.

The list of injured All-Stars doesn’t end with Bryant. Boston’s Kevin Garnett was the leading vote-getter, but he won’t be suiting up in New Orleans due to a strained abdominal muscle that has forced him to miss the Celtics’ last nine games. Also missing Sunday's game for the East will be Washington forward Caron Butler. Butler has been in and out of the Wizards’ lineup lately with a hip injury that will keep him from playing on Sunday. Rasheed Wallace was selected to replace Garnett on the East roster, while Butler's replacement will be Ray Allen.

The early line for the game had the West listed as an 8-point favorite, which they easily would have covered last year. The total has been set quite high at 262.5. On that total, last year’s All-Star Game would have been an over play, but the previous two would both have fallen under the total.

        Eastern Conference Roster

        Starters:
        C - Dwight Howard
F - Kevin Garnett (injured will not play)

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio State at Michigan (CBS | 1 PM ET)

Ohio State is 5-1-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
Michigan is 1-8 ATS in its last 9 home games.
The favorite is 6-2-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

#2 Duke at Wake Forest (FSN | 7:30 PM ET)

Duke is 22-1 and 10-0 in the ACC, and is also 6-0 on the road this season. Duke’s last road contest was an 89-78 victory over then-No. 3 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. "We're a very confident team,” said Blue Devils guard Greg Paulas. EDGE: DUKE
Wake Forest is feeling good coming off the first back-to-back wins of its ACC season, including a win at Florida State on Thursday. The Demon Deacons shot a season-best 56 percent from the field in that game and made eight of their 13 3-pointers. EDGE: WAKE FOREST
Duke is 7-1-2 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
Wake Forest is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The home team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

#6 UCLA at USC (FSN | 10 PM ET)

The USC Trojans will try for the first season sweep of their crosstown rival UCLA Bruins in four years, as they defeated the Bruins on their homecourt 72-63 last month. The Problem is the Trojans will be without their starting guard Daniel Hackett this time around. Hackett is one of the Trojans best defensive rebounders and a key component of the triangle-and-2 offense that stymied UCLA in that January victory. EDGE: UCLA
USC shot 61 percent from the field and held the UCLA to a season-low 33 percent in that victory, and star guard OJ Mayo, who is expected to play through a groin injury, scored 16 points. "SC gave us trouble last time just because they picked us apart on defense," UCLA center Kevin Love said. EDGE: USC
UCLA is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
USC is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games against the Pac-10.
The OVER is 4-2 in the last 6 meetings.

College funds: Sunday's top college hoops bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Notre Dame at Rutgers (+10)

Notre Dame's five-game wining streak came to an end in an 84-78 loss to UConn this week, but they should be able to start a new one against the struggling Scarlet Knights on Sunday.

"I think our confidence is still sky high," senior captain Rob Kurz said after the loss to Huskies. "We've been playing great and one loss is not gonna derail our confidence in any way."

The Irish are right to be confident ahead of their trip to New Jersey. Rutgers has lost six straight home games and 11 of its last 13 games overall. The Scarlet Knights have failed to cover the spread in any of their last five straight contests, and have not beaten Notre Dame in a regular season game since 2003-04 campaign.

                    Pick: Irish

                    Duke at Wake Forest (+10)

The Duke Blue Devils are arguably the hottest team in college basketball at the moment. They have won 12 straight games and have covered the spread in seven of their last 10, with two pushes. That success has been driven by freshman Kyle Singler.

"He can shoot, defend, pass - he's a winner," coach Mike Krzyzewski said of Singler after Duke's last game. "He's got it all, and it's all just a matter of getting the physical maturity there. He's still a young body, but he's not a young heart, nor a young mind. He's big-time in both those areas."

Singler scored a season-high 26-points in the Blue Devil's all-important win over Maryland last week, as well as a career-best 10 field goals and six three pointers.

In his last four games the freshman is averaging 19.5 points and 8 rebounds, and Duke should get a fifth consecutive win (both SU and ATS) over Wake Forest if he can keep that going.

                    Pick: Demon Deacons

                    UCLA at Southern California (+5)

The Trojans have been hit with an injury crisis ahead of their clash with UCLA. Freshman O.J. Mayo is struggling with a strained groin, guard Marcus Simmons has an ankle sprain, and Daniel Hackett is definitely out with a stress fracture in his back.

That leaves USC with only two fully-fit scholarship guards, and on Thursday they held a walk-through instead of a practice because of all the injuries.

"Sure it's a concern," coach Tim Floyd said. "We would have loved to have been full speed and practicing today but couldn't. We didn't have enough guys to get up and down on the perimeter."

The Trojans are hoping to have several key players back in time for Sunday's game, but it's unlikely that they will get a full game out of either Mayo or Simmons. That gives the Bruins a distinct advantage as they look for to avenge a defeat to USC earlier this season.

                    Pick: Bruins
