    Six-pack for Friday

Top six college hoop teams, in terms of defensive efficiency one of the most important stats in basketball........ratings are from kenpom.

    6) Duke-- Funny how all these teams have winning records Interesting to see if Duke's perimeter-based offense can go all the way to San Antonio.

    5) Louisville-- Pitino's team rounding into form, as usual, with March around corner; this didn't look possible before Christmas, when Cardinals were a mess.

    4) Wisconsin-- Bo Ryan wouldn't have won four national titles in D-III if he didn't know how to coach defense.

    3) Stanford-- Lopez twins are imposing set of giants under the Stanford basket, allowing Cardinals to pressure guards.

    2) Kansas-- Can they shake history of failures under Self in March? No excuses this season- they're really good.

    1) Memphis-- Play in weaker league, but they're loaded; the shooting is going to determine how far they go in March.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts before a long weekend

      13) Indiana is headed to probation for first time since 1960, so it looks like they might be shopping for both a new basketball coach and a new athletic director, less than a year after their beloved football coach died from cancer. Tough times.......

      12) I'm sure the people at IU are just thrilled that ESPN has its pregame show on its way to Bloomington for the Michigan St game Saturday night- just what they don't want right now, a national spotlight on their program.

      11) Because Ohio State just had to pay Jim O'Brien $2.4M for wrongful termination, Kelvin Sampson won't be fired as soon as you'd think- probably after the season. Lot of legal stuff is at work here, with the almighty dollar and avoiding probation, or at least a long probation, the primary goals for Hoosiers.

      10) NBA is going to seriously consider expansion in Europe, with a five-team European division, once cities have built new NBA-quality arenas. The NBA is lot more popular in Europe than it is here- they think someone else might start the league in Europe, if they don't, so we'll see..........

      9) One good by-product of a new league might be the NBA switching to international rules, which make for better hoop to watch. Less one-on-one, more passing.

      8) Funny how a league whose rules openly promote 1-on-1 play refuses to run a 1-on-1 tournament for charity in summer.

      7) The parents of NC State forward Ben McCauley's own a mortuary in western Pennsylvania. Imagine coaches recruting him? Those home visits must have been unique.

      6) Heard someone on TV say that post-Katrina New Orleans is now roughly the size of Green Bay, which makes you think the Hornets might not be able to stay there. Why not just let the Sonics stay in Seattle and put the Hornets in Oklahoma, where they were wildly popular the last couple years?

      5) Speaking of New Orleans, the Saints have a new defensive line coach, former Ole Miss head man Ed Orgeron, who has a great reputation coaching lineman at Miami and USC.

      4) In four games since Ty Lawson got hurt, North Carolina is minus-26 in turnover ratio; they need him healthy, and soon.

      3) How weird would it be if Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens find themselves as cellmates someday? The lesson here people, is that it is stupid to lie to the federal government.

      2) Kobe Bryant needs surgery on his pinky, is out 4-6 weeks, putting Pau Gasol where he doesn't want to be, in "main man" role for the Lakers. He wasn't good at it with the Grizzlies.

      1) Its an obscure NBA rule that allows Devean George block the Jason Kidd trade; apparently, he is on 1-year contract, on same team he played for last year, so he loses his rights to be a free agent next summer if he is traded. George is one of only 18 NBA players who falls under that umbrella this season.

        Weekend Sports Preview

The NBA All-Star Game and the Daytona 500 highlight this weekend in sports, with full slates of NHL and college basketball and a California PGA event also on the schedule.

All-Star weekend gets underway on Friday night, with both a celebrity game and the annual rookie/sophomore challenge. This year's rookie roster includes the likes of Kevin Durant, Mike Conley, Al Horford, and Yi Jianlian, while the sophomores will be led by Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge. The rookies have won just twice over six games.

Saturday will then feature the D-League All-Star Game and the skills competition, while the actual NBA All-Star Game is set to tip off after 8:00pm ET on Sunday night. Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Jason Kidd, and Kevin Garnett were selected as the Eastern starters (although Garnett is injured and will not play). Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, and Yao Ming are the starting five for the West.

Meanwhile, NASCAR's biggest event of the year is scheduled to get underway at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson, the defending series champ and the 2006 Daytona 500 winner, will start from the pole Sunday. He'll be looking to fend off new teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr., who claimed the Bud Shootout.

Kevin Harvick won the Daytona 500 last season, while Jamie McMurray took the checkered flag in the Pepsi 400 on that track last July. Jeff Gordon has six career Sprint Cup (formerly Nextel Cup) wins at Daytona International Speedway, most recently in 2005. Gordon, though, trails Johnson, Earnhardt Jr., and Tony Stewart on the Vegas odds list for this race; that trio of favorites is at 6/1 odds, while Gordon is behind at 7/1.

The National Hockey League doesn't have a marquee event this weekend, but it does have a full slate of games on all three days. Friday night features three divisional matchups in Washington at Florida, Columbus at Detroit, and Dallas at Anaheim, while Atlanta goes north to New Jersey to play the Devils and Los Angeles hosts the Flames.

Los Angeles is back in action on Saturday night, but they'll be on the road to take on the Coyotes in Phoenix. Other western clashes on Saturday include St. Louis at Nashville and Edmonton at Vancouver. In the east it will be Philadelphia at Montreal, Boston at Toronto, Atlanta at the New York Islanders, Florida at Carolina, Buffalo at the New York Rangers, Washington at Tampa Bay, and a rematch between New Jersey and Ottawa.

Sunday then features eight more games on the ice, include matinees Colorado at Chicago, Detroit at Dallas, and San Jose at the New York Rangers. Also that day are Columbus at St. Louis, Montreal at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh at Buffalo, and Nashville at Minnesota, with the Flames also going south to Anaheim for a matchup with the Ducks.

In college hoops action there's a rare contest involving a ranked team on Friday night - No. 22 Pittsburgh will play a road game against Marquette. Most of the top teams, though, aren't in action until Saturday; that day's schedule includes the top-ranked (and unbeaten) Memphis Tigers taking on the UAB Blazers at Birmingham's Bartow Arena.

Other games involving Top 10 teams on Saturday include No. 8 Georgetown vs. Syracuse, Virginia Tech vs. No. 5 North Carolina, Colorado vs. No. 3 Kansas, Cleveland State vs. No. 9 Butler, No. 4 Tennessee vs. Georgia, and No. 7 Stanford vs. Arizona. As well, No. 10 Michigan State will have a tough road game against No. 13 Indiana. No. 2 Duke (vs. Wake Forest) and No. 6 UCLA (vs. USC) will return to action on Sunday night.

Finally, the PGA Tour will wind up its stop at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California this weekend . Phil Mickelson entered the Northern Trust Open as the 7/1 Vegas favorite, with Vijay Singh at 10/1 odds, and Jim Furyk just back of those two at 12/1 odds. Both Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald were pegged with 15/1 odds, while Vegas listed defending champion Charles Howell III farther behind at 40/1 odds

#22 Pittsburgh at Marquette (ESPN | 9 PM ET)

Pittsburgh is expected to get point guard Levance Fields back from a broken foot he suffered back on December 29th. Field was averaging 11.9 points and 5.4 assists before the injury and was supposed to be out 8-12 weeks. “I’m looking forward to playing on Friday, as long as the foot feels good,” Fields said . “So everything is going as planned. It was a little sore (after practice Monday). Of course, after not doing anything like that the past five or six weeks, you expect that. But it wasn’t painful.” SLIGHT EDGE: PITT
Marquette has won 3 of the last 4 home meetings with Pitt, going 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between the teams overall. The Golden Eagles had a 3-game series winning streak snapped with a 89-79 loss in last year's Big East tournament. EDGE: MARQUETTE
Pittsburgh is 13-2-1 ATS in its last 16 Friday games.
The OVER is 20-8 in Marquette's last 28 games vs. Big East.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Pittsburgh's last 9 Friday games.
The UNDER is 15-5 in Pittsburgh's last 20 road games.

                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ice picks: Friday's top NHL plays

                              Calgary vs. Los Angeles (+140, 5 ½)

The Kings have some serious goaltending and defensive issues, in case you hadn’t noticed. They rank second-last in the league in goals against and if their offense wasn’t so stagnant, they’d have a much more lopsided over/under ratio than 30-26.

A couple of games ago, L.A. called up Dan Cloutier from the minors and he made 31 saves in a shootout win over Columbus. For some reason, he wasn’t played in a 4-2 loss on Tuesday against St. Louis. There’s a good shot he’ll get the nod tonight in what is the first game back from an eight-game road trip. Thirty shots or more is pretty much the norm that the Kings allow on net these days, so you can expect him to be busy.

You can also expect him to be warmed by a glowing red light if previous meetings against Calgary mean anything this year. The Flames have scored 16 goals in three wins over the Kings this season.

                              Pick: Flames

                              Columbus vs. Detroit (-300, 5 ½)

The Red Wings opened as -280 favorites for this game and the line quickly moved up. Apparently bettors don’t think the NHL’s best team will lose five games in a row.

The Wings’ worst and only slump of the season is mainly because they’ve had trouble scoring. They haven’t scored more than three goals in 10 straight games now and they haven’t been dominating five-on-five play like they normally do.

Tonight could be the night the slump ends, though. Columbus beat the Wings in their last meeting, 3-2, and you know Detroit can’t be happy about it. Columbus is also mired in a slide that has seen the club lose seven of its last eight games.

                              Pick: Detroit -1 ½ goals (-110)

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
