Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls (-3, 193)

The All-Star break - and the end of the season for that matter - can't come quickly enough for the Miami Heat. They have the worst record in the NBA (9-42) and have lost eight straight games while covering the spread just twice.

The Heat have won just once in their last 24 games and are 5-19 ATS over that time. Miami's last win on the road came all the way back on Dec. 10, when it defeated the Phoenix Suns 117-113 as 2 1/2-point underdog.

The Heat are unlikely to snap any of those losing streaks against Chicago on Thursday. The Bulls have won four straight games against Miami, covering the spread on every occasion. They haven't not lost at home to the Heat since May of 2006.

      Pick: Bulls

      Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns (-6 1/2, 206 1/2)

Shaquille O'Neal could make his Suns debut against the Mavs on Thursday night, adding spice to this Texas rivalry. Shaq practiced this week without any adverse reaction from his injured hip, and was close to making the lineup for Wednesday's game at Golden State.

"He's not quite ready," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said ahead of that contest. "He wants to be comfortable with the offense. He knows it's going to be a big splash when he goes out the first time."

But D'Antoni added that it's "possible" O'Neal could play against the Mavericks.

Shaq's first outing could prove to the difference between two teams that have been evenly matched in recent years. Dallas and Phoenix have split their last four meetings, but the Suns covered in three of those and the other was a push.

      Pick: Suns

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Dallas vs. Phoenix (-125, 5)

The Coyotes are in the midst of a four-game losing slump and a look at the injury report may give some clues about why.

The Arizona Republic is reporting captain Shane Doan is day-to-day, and Martin Hanzal is at least a week away from returning. Defenseman Derek Morris is coming off an illness and forwards Radim Vrbata (ankle) and Peter Mueller (foot) are playing hurt.

The Yotes just lost to Dallas on Monday 2-1 as +180 underdogs, though they put up a tough fight that coach Wayne Gretzky praised after the game. The unfortunate part of Phoenix is that Dallas is a hard working club too and the Stars are on a seven-game winning streak.

Expect another low-scoring game against a Dallas club that has given up just 10 goals during its winning streak.

        Pick: under five goals

Edmonton vs. San Jose (-225, 5)

Despite losing their leading scorer and best defenseman, the Oilers have managed to win three of their last four games. That's thanks in large part to the play of goaltender Mathieu Garon.

Garon has seen more rubber than the I-95 lately with 135 shots against over the last four games. Somehow, he has only allowed seven goals on those shots. Something's got to give against a San Jose power play that has scored in each of its last six games.

The Oilers have also been on fire on the PP lately with six goals over their past four games.

        Pick: over five goals
