    Six-pack for Friday

-- Alabama had great recruiting class, signing 31 kids, with 18 of the 31 from Alabama, only one from Louisiana.

-- College football recruiting is so strange, Terrelle Pryor held a news conference to announce that he had nothing to announce. Three schools are going to be left holding a very valuable scholarship in their hand when he does decide.

-- Johan Santana was actually in the room as his contract with Mets was being negotiated, which apparently is very unusual. Good to see the player having input.

-- If the NBA playoffs had started Thursday morning, the Rockets and Blazers, both 28-20, would have been out, but the Hawks (21-24) and Nets (20-29) would have been in.

-- 53 college juniors have declared for the NFL Draft.

-- 12 of the 16 Big East teams make the conference tourney; those other four should automatically be DQ'd from being in the NCAA tournament; there is chance a team could be 13th in Big East but still get in, which would be ridiculous.

Friday's List of 13: Our college basketball List of 13:

      13) Texas Tech-- Raiders switched to 3-2 zone after the first TV timeout at Baylor, a sure sign a change had been made.

      12) Washington State-- Lost four of last five games, has big game Saturday, with red-hot USC visiting Pullman.

      11) Buffalo-- Got first MAC win after losing previous couple games in double overtime; spunky effort by the Bulls.

      10) Illinois-- Played their hearts out vs Indiana, lost in double OT; Weber can coach, but he needs better players, and thats part of his job, too.

      9) Drake-- Kid named Adam Emmenecker scores 7.5 ppg in 31.4 mpg for 21-1 Bulldogs; the kid scored 4.7 ppg his senior year in high school, never scoring more than 12 points in any game. This is the kind of thing that makes college ball great

      8) Cornell-- Off to 4-0 start in Ivy League, as they look to get into NCAAs for first time in twenty years. Penn, Princeton are in Ithaca this weekend, so time for Cornell to step up.

      7) Kentucky-- Natives were restless all fall as team struggled, but now Wildcats are 5-2 in SEC (having down year, for sure) and the natives are quiet, at least for now.

      6) Texas A&M-- Five-OT loss to Baylor was their third in row but they haven't lost since, beating Texas, Oklahoma.

      5) UConn-- 7-3 shot blocker Thabeet is huge weapon, letting Huskies sit back and defy teams to beat them from outside. They've won six in row, last five by seven points or less.

      4) Delaware-- 7-5 in CAA is big step forward; their last four wins were either in OT, or by a single point.

      3) Duquesne-- Shawn James had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks in surprising home win vs St Joe's. Duquesne is 4-4 in A-14, first time in long time they're not a doormat.

      2) Duke-- They're 8-0 in ACC, taking just 22 more foul shots than their opponents in those eight games, while taking 108 more 3-pointers in the same eight games.

      1) West Coast Conference- Surprising three-way tie atop the standings, with Gonzaga, St Mary's and San Diego.

        Weekend Sports Preview

Hoops will hog the spotlight this weekend as both the NBA and college basketball dominate the betting landscape, but there’s also plenty of hockey and the Pro Bowl on which to wager.

The NBA gets the weekend started on Friday night with a jam-packed schedule that includes 11 games. The top matchups on Friday’s slate look to be the Lakers at Orlando, Cleveland at Atlanta, Portland at Detroit, Washington at Denver, and Kevin Garnett’s first trip back to Minnesota when Boston faces the Timberwolves. The rest of Friday night’s games include the Clippers at Toronto, New Jersey at Charlotte, San Antonio at New York, Memphis at Dallas, Seattle at Phoenix and Utah at Sacramento.

There are seven games on tap in the NBA on Saturday, but none of the games involve two teams with winning records. In early action on Saturday, Portland takes on Indiana, the Clippers face Philadelphia, Memphis visits New Orleans, Atlanta travels to Houston and New York battles Milwaukee. The later games include Chicago at Utah and Sacramento at Golden State.

Seven more NBA contests follow on Sunday, including what looked like a potential NBA Finals preview a few weeks ago between San Antonio and Boston. Also worth watching on Sunday is Charlotte at Detroit, Dallas at New Jersey, Denver at Cleveland and Washington at Phoenix. The rest of Sunday’s games include the Lakers at Miami and Toronto at Minnesota.

In college hoops this weekend the entire Top 10 will take to the court with eight of those teams in action on Saturday. On tap for Saturday is Boston College at No. 2 Duke, No. 7 Tennessee at LSU, UCF at No. 1 Memphis, Oregon State at No. 9 Stanford, Baylor at No. 4 Kansas, No. 10 Butler at Wisc. Green Bay, No. 6 Georgetown at Louisville, and No. 24 Purdue at No. 8 Wisconsin.

The two Top 10 contests on Sunday are No. 5 UCLA at Washington and Clemson at No. 3 North Carolina.

On the ice this weekend everything gets started on Friday night with four games, highlighted by Anaheim at New Jersey and Carolina at Washington. The other two Friday night games include Boston at Buffalo and Columbus at San Jose.

Saturday night’s NHL slate includes 12 games, starting with Los Angeles at Pittsburgh, the Rangers at Philadelphia, Detroit at Toronto, the Islanders at Minnesota, Montreal at Ottawa and Carolina at New Jersey. The battle of Alberta between Edmonton and Calgary also resumes on Saturday night, as well as Tampa Bay at Atlanta, Florida at Boston, St. Louis at Dallas, Nashville at San Jose and Colorado at Vancouver.

There are eight more games on ice Sunday including the battle of Pennsylvania between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and a rematch of last year’s Western Conference final between Anaheim and Detroit. The rest of the Sunday schedule includes the Rangers at Washington, Florida at Buffalo, Minnesota at St. Louis, Los Angeles at Columbus, Nashville at Phoenix and Chicago at Vancouver.

The NFL season may have ended last weekend, but the final game of the season will be played on Sunday when the AFC takes on the NFC in the Pro Bowl. The early line on the game has the AFC listed as a 3-point favorite.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          L.A. Lakers at Orlando Magic (-1 1/2, 213)

There's been a lot of talk about what Pau Gasol will do for the Lakers since his arrival last week, but let's not forget that Kobe Bryant is still the main man. He is currently struggling with a dislocated finger and that will cause problems for L.A. as it continues a record nine-game road trip.

Bryant picked up the injury early in Tuesday's win over the Nets and went on to score a season-low six points in that game. He made only three of 13 shots in New Jersey, but things got worse in Wednesday's loss to Atlanta.

Bryant was 4-for-16, managing just 11 points and his right hand was heavily bandaged after the game. Gasol only managed 12 points and seven rebounds in the defeat and he will have to do better on Friday if the Lakers are to avoid a second straight loss.

                          Pick: Lakers

Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves (+5 1/2, 189)

A recent injury to forward Kevin Garnett seemed to be a huge blow to the Celtics, but they have shown the kind of depth that is required of a championship team. Garnett has missed five straight games, but the Celts have won three of those behind strong efforts from Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo.

Rondo has been particularly impressive, and scored a season-high 24 points in Wednesday's win over the Clippers. He has averaged 19.3 points per game since Garnett’s injury, well ahead of his season average of 10.3.

Garnett may not be available for Friday's trip to Minnesota, but the Celtics should be able to cope. They have won two straight games against the Wolves and have covered the spread in 10 of their last 14 meetings with them.

                          Pick: Celtics

Memphis Grizzlies at Dallas Mavericks (-13 1/2, 201)

The Grizzlies were already one of the worst teams in the league before trading Gasol to the Lakers, so how have they fared since his departure? Not too well as it turns out, because they have yet to win a game without their former star.

They have dropped three straight in his absence, while failing to cover the spread in any of those. Memphis has now lost six of its last seven overall, covering the spread just once over that period.

The Mavericks have won 13 straight games against Memphis, covering the spread in 10 of those meetings.

                          Pick: Dallas
