        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Columbus vs. Phoenix (-140, 5)

It would be folly for us not to mention the return of the NHL's favorite bookmaker, Rick Tocchet. We know the Coyotes assistant coach might not have a monster impact on tonight's game, but if you gamble, you know his story.

The NHL has reinstated him after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and promoting gambling last summer. Tocchet never took bets on hockey and we think it's a tiny sign of hope for legalization that the NHL is allowing him back in the league instead of treating him like the gum on the bottom of Pete Rose's shoe.

But this is just one more reason why gambling needs to be legalized. If it's legalized, this incident doesn't happen.

As for the game, we think Janet Gretzky would take the Yotes tonight because the CBJ's are without No. 1 netminder Pascal Leclaire and there’s a bronchitis bug running through the team. That's if she bet on hockey. But she doesn't. Probably doesn't even like betting.

        Pick: Phoenix

Anaheim vs. New York Rangers (-115, 5)

We question oddsmakers on this line tonight. Anaheim scores only five goals in six games then suddenly Teemu Selanne returns and they score three goals in a shutout win over the Isle.

Selanne got an assist in his debut and he provides a huge boost for the Ducks on the offensive end. He especially adds punch to a feeble power play unit that had gone 0-for-16 over its previous four games before Selanne's return.

Anaheim is in the middle of a nine-game road trip that doesn't get any easier from here. The Ducks face New Jersey, Detroit and Colorado after this.

        Pick: Anaheim

        Toronto vs. Montreal (-200, 6)

Why this line opened with the Habs -185, we're not quite sure. The Leafs might just be the worst team in the league right now and they have injury issues to boot.

The injuries are too numerous to list, but the amount of suck they're producing speaks for itself. Toronto got ripped 8-0 by Florida at home a couple nights ago. Normally that would be enough to shame a team into a good game tonight, but this is the Leafs we're talking about. Toronto has now lost five of its last seven.

The Canadiens, meanwhile, are playing some fantastic, high-tempo hockey with seven wins in their last 10 games. They have the most lethal power play in the NHL with five PP goals in their last two games and at least one goal on the man-advantage in their last seven.

Toronto allowed the Panthers to go three-for-three on the power play Tuesday night.

        Pick: Montreal
