Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday’s NBA picks
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Detroit Pistons (-16, 185)

Just when it seemed this season had gotten as bad as it possibly could, things got even worse for the Miami Heat. They were torn apart at home to the Raptors Monday night, losing by 23 points as nine-point underdogs.

The 114-82 defeat was Miami’s biggest of the season and it allowed the Raptors to shoot 66 percent through the first three quarters. At one point in the final period the Heat were down by a remarkable 39 points.

They have now lost 19 of their last 20 games, covering the spread just twice over that time. They have also dropped nine straight on the road and their 9-38 record is easily the worst in the NBA.

          Pick: Pistons

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets (-2, 219)

Carmelo Anthony returned from an ankle injury last weekend and suddenly the Nuggets look like a more dynamic team. They have won two straight games since his return, covering the spread on both occasions.

In his first game back against Charlotte on Saturday, Anthony showed exactly why Denver missed him so much. He had 25 points and 10 rebounds in the 117-101 win as the Nuggets covered a hefty 13-point spread.

Denver faces the Jazz on Wednesday knowing that a win would bring it a share of the NBA Northwest lead. With Anthony back in the fold, it is more than capable of winning and covering the spread for the third straight time against Utah.

          Pick: Nuggets

New Orleans Hornets at Phoenix Suns (-6, 215 1/2)

The Hornets have been one of the best ATS teams of the season, but it seems that run is coming to an end. They have dropped three consecutive games both straight up and ATS, easily their worst stretch of the season.

The Hornets’ problem is defense. They recently covered in nine straight games, conceding fewer than 100 points in all of those contests. But during the current losing streak they have allowed their opponents to score 116, 112 and 110 points respectively.

Their problems will not end on Wednesday. The Suns have the second most potent offense in the league, averaging a whopping 109.4 points per game. If Phoenix matches that average in this contest, a fourth consecutive loss is on the cards for New Orleans.

Note: Shawn Marion will likely be out for this game if trade rumors are true that he'll be traded to Miami in a deal for Shaquille O'Neal.

          Pick: Hornets

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

            Washington vs. Philadelphia (-165, 6)

All Alexander Ovechkin does is score goals. The guy got two more last night, including the overtime winner, in a 4-3 victory over Columbus. Ovechkin now leads the league in goals (45) and points (72).

The Caps seem to love playing on back-to-back nights this season with a 9-3 record on zero days of rest. Last night’s game was fast-paced and emotional though it looked for a moment as though the Caps would lose it on some referee interference from Bill McCreary.

They fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game, only to watch McCreary crash into a Washington defenseman on a 1-on-2 and Rick Nash waltzed in on a breakaway and scored.

Tom Poti tied to score it up and Ovechkin potted the winner, but it was an emotional roller coaster that will make it tough to face the physical Flyers tonight.

            Pick: Philadelphia

            Edmonton vs. Chicago (-115, 5)

Some coaching moves are easier than others. When your starting goalie loses his last 10 starts, it’s time for one of the easier ones.

Blackhawks coach Denis Savard will start Patrick Lalime in net tonight against the Oilers in place of the struggling Nikolai Khabibulin. Lalime has won four of his last six starts and he actually has a lower goals-against average (2.48) than Khabibulin (2.83).

The problem is, it doesn’t matter how good your goalie is if you can’t put the puck in the net. Partly due to some key injuries to guys like Jonathan Toews and Martin Lapointe, the Blackhawks have just 11 goals in their last six games.

Four of the last five meetings in this series have gone under the total (the other one was a five-goal push) and the Oilers just lost their leading scorer, Shawn Horcoff, for the season.

            Pick: under

              Tips and Trends (Updated)
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Atlanta Hawks (7 PM ET)

New addition Pau Gasol had a great debut for the Lakers in a win at New Jersey on Tuesday, totaling 24 points and 12 rebounds. His offense could be needed even more at Atlanta since leading scorer Kobe Bryant is nursing a dislocated pinky that limited him to a season-low 6 points against the Nets. "He played extremely well," Bryant said of Gasol. "Defenses are used to playing a certain way. You know, screen-and-roll, where I come off the pick, they're used to playing a certain way. Now they have to evaluate how they play that. It's going to be a little bit more for defenses to kind of try to come up with a scheme." SLIGHT EDGE: HAWKS
LA is 3-1 on its current 9-game road trip and has won 4 of the last 6 meetings with the Hawks at Philips Arena. Atlanta has not won 3 straight games since the end of December. EDGE: LAKERS
Lakers are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 road games.
Hawks are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 home games.
The UNDER is 10-4 in the last 14 Wednesday games.

San Antonio Spurs at Washington Wizards (7 PM ET)

Washington could again be without leading scorer Caron Butler, who aggravated his hip flexor injury in a loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday. The Wizards led by 12 points early in the 4th quarter but surrendered 17 straight points to the 76ers to lose their 4th straight game. They have been outscored by an average of more than 16 points during their skid, averaging just 89.3 points per game. EDGE: SPURS
San Antonio has won the last 4 meetings between the teams along with 13 of the last 16, including a 109-94 rout back on November 28th. The Spurs have won 3 straight overall, failing to allow more than 89 points in any of those games. EDGE: SPURS
Spurs are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games.
The UNDER is 8-0 in Washington’s last 8 games against the Western Conference.
Home team is 10-3-2 ATS in the last 15 games.

Miami Heat at Detroit Pistons (NBA | 7:30 PM ET)

Miami has dropped 19 of 20 games, including 9 straight on the road by an average of 13 points. The Heat are coming off their most lopsided loss of the season at home to Toronto on Monday, 114-82. "Terrible basketball," Miami star Dwyane Wade said. "Maybe it's getting away." EDGE: PISTONS
Wade is averaging just 11.3 points in the Heat's last 3 games on 37.1 percent shooting while the team is also dealing with rumors that center Shaquille O'Neal could be on his way out. O'Neal is reportedly headed to Phoenix, adding yet another distraction to an already struggling team. EDGE: PISTONS
Heat are 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 Wednesday games.
Pistons are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 home games.
The UNDER is 19-7-1 in the last 27 meetings.

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets (9 PM ET)

Utah is going for its 10th straight victory for the 1st time in almost 9 years. The Jazz have won 9 games in a row by an average of 13.7 points (going 8-1 ATS), and they had a 4-game winning streak snapped the last time they visited Denver. The Nuggets have fallen 1 game behind Utah for the lead in the Northwest Division during this stretch. SLIGHT EDGE: NUGGETS
Jazz point guard Deron Williams has been the catalyst during the team's winning streak after getting snubbed from the All-Star team, averaging 19 points and 11.7 assists per game, including 8 straight double doubles. Williams is averaging 25.7 points and 12.7 assists in his last 3 trips to Denver. EDGE: JAZZ
Jazz are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Nuggets are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Favorite is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

New Orleans Hornets at Phoenix Suns (9 PM ET)

This game pits the teams with the Top 2 records in the Western Conference. While the Suns are used to that distinction of being one of the league's best teams, the Hornets have been a bit inconsistent. New Orleans has been very streaky, losing 3 straight following a 9-game winning streak. The Hornets have surrendered 112.7 points per game during their skid after limiting opponents to an average of just 86.9 during their winning streak. EDGE: SUNS
New Orleans has won both meetings with Phoenix so far this season, covering the last 4 games between the teams. EDGE: HORNETS
Shaquille O'Neal appears headed to Phoenix, as he is there right now getting a physical and a deal is expected to be completed before this game. This could be a big motivational edge for the Suns considering how the Lakers played - winning 2 straight - after hearing news that they had aquired Pau Gasol. EDGE: SUNS
Hornets are 16-5 in their last 21 games against the Pacific Division.
Suns are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Chicago Bulls at Portland Trail Blazers (10 PM ET)

Portland has dropped 3 of 5 on its current homestand after it had won the previous 12 at the Rose Garden. The Blazers lost to Denver 105-103 in overtime on Monday, and Brandon Roy said "This has been tough, as the intensity has been really high, but it?s been close losses." EDGE: BULLS
The Chicago Bulls have won just 2 of their last 6 games, and have not won consecutive games since the end of December. Chicago is already missing its second-leading scorer in Luol Deng with an Achilles' injury, and now Kirk Hinrich is considered a game-time decision for this game due to a rib cage injury. EDGE: BLAZERS
Bulls are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Blazers are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in the Blazers last 10 games as a favorite.

                #12 Texas at Oklahoma (ESPN2 | 7 PM ET)

Texas head coach Rick Barnes brought Damion Jones off the bench for the 1st time in his career on Saturday, and he responded with 17 points and 8 rebounds in an 80-72 win over Baylor. Jones was not playing good defense and had struggled in his last 2 starts. "I told him, 'You know I love ya,'"Barnes said. "If sitting you down is what it takes to get your attention, it's about holding you accountable. Sometimes sitting down is helpful, but he didn't sit for long." EDGE: TEXAS

#19 UConn at Syracuse (ESPN | 7 PM ET)

The Huskies are currently on a 5-game winning streak, during which they've defeated three Top 25 teams in Marquette, Indiana and Pittsburgh. “I’m very impressed with what we’re doing right now,” said UConn guard AJ Price. “We are not even at our peak yet.” EDGE: UCONN
The Syracuse Orange are winners of 3 straight and have also won 2 in a row against the Huskies. The Orange will also try to take advantage of a UConn team that will again be without one of its leading scorers. Sophomore guard Jerome Dyson (14 ppg) was one of two players suspended by coach Jim Calhoun after they were caught with alcohol on campus. EDGE: SYRACUSE
UConn is 5-14 ATS in its last 19 road games.
Syracuse is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

#2 Duke at #3 North Carolina (ESPN | 9 PM ET)

The biggest question mark in this game is the status of North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson, who sprained his right ankle in a win over Florida State on Sunday. Lawson played just 4 minutes in that game, and his potential loss could be compounded by the fact that reserve Bobby Frasor is out for the season with a knee injury. That leaves senior Quentin Thomas (2.1 points per game) as the most likely candidate to step into the starting lineup. "He walked in the trainer's room on crutches," Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams said of Lawson. "And I think it's awfully difficult to go from crutches one day to playing against Duke the next day." EDGE: DUKE
A huge mismatch in this game figures to be Tar Heels center Tyler Hans-brough against Duke inside. Hans-brough is averaging 21.8 ponts and 10.8 rebounds per game, getting to the free-throw line 10.4 times per game. The Blue Devils are weak in the middle and could get dominated by the preseason ACC Player of the Year. BIG EDGE: NORTH CAROLINA
Duke is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 Wednesday games.
North Carolina is 25-7 ATS in its last 32 home games.
Underdog is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
