    Six-pack for Monday

-- Falcons apparently want to hire Giants' DC Spagnuolo as head coach; now they'll have to wait two weeks, or will they go for Rex Ryan of the Ravens instead?

-- Bills are going to play at least one home game in Toronto next year; would think that might become an annual event.

-- With Bucs' owner Malcolm Glazer owning a soccer team in England, looks like Tampa Bay might be one of teams in line to play in Great Britain or Wales next season.

-- Seeing how Giants made Super Bowl after playing over in the UK this season, teams might be less reluctant to do so.

-- Stan Kroenke, who owns NBA's Nuggets, and Avalanche of NHL, has right of first refusal to buy Rams if children of Georgia Frontiere want to sell the team.

-- Those Dolphins must have some great WRs, seeing as how they traded Welker and Chambers in the last year.

Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a frigid day......

      13) It is a bad idea to play conference championship games at night in cold weather cities. Understood that all the league cares about is TV ratings, but it hurts quality of the product.

      12) Funny how as soon as an ungrateful backstabber like Tiki Barber retires; the Giants come together and make a run to a very unlikely NFC title. Coincidence? Not quite.

      11) Giants led New England 26-14 in second half of the Week 17 Saturday night game, before Patriots rallied for a 38-35 win that preserved their perfect record. Something to think about.

      10) Looks like Mike Holmgren might be retiring; Jim Mora Jr is in line to replace Holmgren; he took his name out of running for the Redskins' job, fueling rumors he'll be the guy in Seattle

      9) Tennis commentator Bud Collins owns five original shares of the New England Patriots, purchased for mere $25 in 1960.

      8) Carlos Pena got $24M from the Devil Rays for three-year deal after his monster season in 2007; they better set some $$ aside for Carl Crawford, whose payday is coming up soon.

      7) Justin Leonard made turn with 3-stroke lead Sunday, but lost by three shots to DJ Trahan, at the Bob Hope Classic in California. Trailing by one on 18th hole, his tee ball got wet, and that took the drama out of that.

      6) It was tenth time Leonard entered final round with lead, but fifth time he didn't win. At least he seems to have recovered from whatever slump he had been in the last couple years.

      5) Philip Rivers played AFC title game with partially torn ACL it should be noted. He's a gutty leader, Billy Kilmer-type-- he even wears #17, like Kilmer did for 49ers, Saints, Redskins.

      4) I am entirely sick of the Manning family, but credit to Eli on his recent play. He led Ole Miss to a Cotton Bowl win when a senior with Rebels (when else has Ole Miss been any good?); so you knew he has the ability. Still didn't like the way Archie handled the situation where he strong-armed Chargers into a trade to the Giants, though. We'll see a lot of Archie the next couple of weeks, unfortunately.

      3) Sabres won a game 10-1 Friday night, which is unusual in itself, but even more so considering they had scored total of sixteen goals in losing their previous ten games.

      2) Kevin O'Neill is doing his darndest coaching Arizona, but his Wildcats are weak inside. Stanford and Cal dominated in the paint this weekend against Arizona, but his guards bailed U of A out in Berkeley Saturday night.

      1) The press isn't going to like this Super Bowl, other than it being in Arizona. Has a Super Bowl ever had two coaches in it that were more difficult to deal with? Coughlin is tough nut to crack, but he looks like Carrot Top when compared to the terminally-bland Belichick.

        Spring Sports Futures Preview

Dreading the end of the National Football League season at the end of this month? Don't despair - there are plenty of other sports betting opportunities coming up for you.

And that's particularly true for those who plan on doing some futures betting. While your Super Bowl wagers will be decided in a couple of weeks you can still get some money down on teams you like to win both the NBA and NHL championships this spring. So which teams are the Vegas oddsmakers favoring to win those titles at this point in time?

In the NBA the favorites are the San Antonio Spurs, who are sitting with 5/2 odds. San Antonio might be battling for first place in their division right now, but the oddsmakers like their chances of succeeding when crunch time comes around. Another Southwest Division team, the Dallas Mavericks, sits second on that championship list at 3/1 odds.

A strong start by the Boston Celtics has them tied with the Phoenix Suns for third on the list at 7/2 odds, with the Detroit Pistons just back of them at 6/1 odds. Other contending teams and their current NBA title odds include the Houston Rockets (18/1), the Utah Jazz (18/1), the Orlando Magic (20/1), and the Los Angeles Lakers (20/1). It wasn't that long ago that the Miami Heat were champs, but a horrible start has them at 150/1 odds.

Over in the NHL the Detroit Red Wings have moved to the top of the Stanley Cup odds for this season - Nicklas Lidstrom and company are currently pegged at 9/2 odds to skate away as champions. The Ottawa Senators, who opened as the 6/1 favorites back in the fall, are now behind the Wings at 5/1 odds. The defending-champion Anaheim Ducks are hanging in with those two favorites - they're currently pegged with 7/1 odds.

The New Jersey Devils are fourth on the list at 8/1 odds, with the San Jose Sharks (10/1), Vancouver Canucks (11/1), New York Rangers (12/1), and Dallas Stars (12/1) rounding out the rest of the top tier of contenders. The Philadelphia Flyers began the season with 85/1 Cup odds, but those have fallen to just 15/1 over the past few months.

The North Carolina Tar Heels had their 18-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, but Vegas still has them as the 7/2 favorites to win the NCAA championship this season. The Heels are followed on the current odds list by Memphis and UCLA, who are both pegged at 4/1. Kansas is next at 7/1, with Georgetown and Tennessee at 12/1. Duke is trailing rival North Carolina in the ACC standings, and they're at 15/1 title odds.

On the track the Nextel Cup Series is now the Sprint Cup Series, and those NASCAR drivers are slowly gearing up for their first event of the season - the Daytona 500. Reigning series champion Jimmie Johnson is listed as the 4/1 favorite to get the win at Daytona, with Jeff Gordon at 5/1 and Dale Earnhardt Jr. at 7/1. Other top Daytona odds right now include Tony Stewart (10/1), Martin Truex Jr. (12/1), and Matt Kenseth (12/1).

Overall Johnson is also pegged as the favorite to repeat as the Cup champion - he's listed at 3/1 odds on that futures bet. Gordon trails him at 4/1, with Kenseth at 7/1 and Stewart at 8/1. Carl Edwards is fifth at 10/1 odds, with Earnhardt Jr. behind him at 12/1.

And finally, the PGA Tour season is already underway but many fans don't pay much attention to the action until The Masters comes up on the schedule. Tiger Woods, of course, is the favorite to win that major tournament this season - he's listed at 7/5 odds. Phil Mickelson is next at 8/1, followed by Ernie Els (15/1) and Vijay Singh (18/1). Other top contenders to capture The Masters include Jim Furyk (20/1) and Adam Scott (25/1).

Miami has also lost 5 straight home games and is just 4-14 at AmericaAirlines Arena this season. BIG EDGE: CAVS

Patriots heavy favorites against Giants at Vegas sports books

LAS VEGAS - New England Patriots fans who want to bet on their team in the Super Bowl will face a significant point spread against the underdog Giants as quarterback Tom Brady aims for a 19-0 record and fourth championship ring.

The Patriots are favored by 13 to 14 points against the New York Giants (13-6) at Las Vegas sports books, a higher-than-normal spread to entice underdog bettors on the biggest booked game of the season.

''The Patriots are still considered by far the best team in the league,'' said Jay Kornegay, sports book director at the Las Vegas Hilton. ''We obviously make that line to get equal action on both sides. To do that, because of the perception of the Patriots, we have to increase their number more than usual.''

Bets were flowing in on the Patriots early in the season as they destroyed opponents and the spread, but the team has won by a margin that was larger than the spread only once in its last eight games, said Chuck Esposito, Caesars Palace's assistant vice president of race and sports book operations.

''A game of this magnitude, historically you'll see some money on the favorite,'' said Esposito, who put the Patriots as 14-point favorites. ''I think that's one of the reasons that the number might be a little bit high.''

The spread is the point difference oddsmakers set to even out lopsided matchups. A bettor who put $110 on the Patriots would need the team to beat the Giants by at least 14 or 15 points to get back $210, which includes his original bet.

Oddsmakers set the total score of the two teams at around 55. Bettors can wager that the final total will be more or less than that amount.

Kornegay predicted a record handle at Nevada sports books, topping the $94.5 million record set in 2006 when Pittsburgh beat Seattle 21-10.

The Patriots are trying to become the second team in NFL history to go undefeated. They already beat the Giants this season, winning 38-35 in the regular-season finale.

''The Giants played right with them for the majority of the game,'' Esposito said. ''And there will be another Manning (New York quarterback Eli Manning) in the Big Game.''

MGM Mirage Inc. sports book director Robert Walker expected the handle in Nevada sports books to hit $100 million.

''I think with the New York team and the Patriots being the most popular team in football, it has the makings of being a special game,'' he said.

                  Buffalo at Phoenix (-113, 5 1/2)

Buffalo looks to earn its first road win in nearly a month and avoid losing eight straight away from home for the first time in franchise history on Monday when they visit the Phoenix Coyotes for the first time in five years.

The Sabres have lost seven straight road games since a 6-5 shootout victory over Philadelphia on Dec. 22. They have been outscored 20-9 during the slide, and have been stopped on all 25 of their power-play opportunities.

The Coyotes beat the Sabres 2-1 in a shootout at Buffalo last season, and have won six of the last eight meetings overall.

                  Pick: Coyotes -113

                  Minnesota at Vancouver (-140, 5)

Goaltender Roberto Luongo, a finalist for the Vezina and Hart trophies last season, has struggled of late. He's 1-3-1 with a 2.93 goals-against average in his last five starts.

He hasn't had much success against Minnesota in his career, either, going 5-8-2 with one tie and a 2.85 GAA.

Although Minnesota is in the lower half of the league in goals scored, it hasn't had problems lately. The Wild have scored 19 in their last five games, during which leading scorer Marian Gaborik has four goals and six assists.

Gaborik also has six goals in his last seven games against the Canucks.

                  Pick: Wild +130

                      Indiana Pacers at Philadelphia 76ers (-3, 203)

The Indiana Pacers will be without Jermaine O'Neal for at least two weeks as he gets treatment for a bruised left knee. That news couldn't have come at a worse time.

Even though the Pacers have been solid against the number, they've dropped five of their last seven straight up and have allowed about 112 points per game over the last five. Sacramento's Mikki Moore took advantage of O'Neal's absence in the paint, hammering home six dunks on his way to a 22-point evening.

The 76ers kicked off a short homestead with an impressive 99-95 win over the Toronto Raptors as 2-point underdogs. Philadelphia ran wild in the third quarter, outscoring the Raptors 34-16.

Willie Green finished with 23 points, while both Andre Iguodala and Andre Miller added 20.

                      Pick: 76ers -3

Chicago Bulls at Memphis Grizzlies (odds TBD)

The Chicago Bulls made headlines last week by suspending Joakim Noah. The outspoken rookie was suspended one game for an altercation with assistant coach Ron Adams and an additional game when the players unanimously voted that the one-game ban wasn't enough.

"I think any time you face adversity you find out the true character of the people you're associated with. I'm very pleased with the way our guys handled that controversy," interim coach Jim Boylan told reporters.

Chicago has won two of its last three, including a 97-81 win over Detroit as a 6.5-point underdog, but it has been a tough year for the 16-23 Bulls.

"All I know is at the end of games, we have to get stops," Ben Gordon told the Chicago Sun-Times. "That's what we did a couple years ago when we were a really good team. ... We haven't been able to do that consistently. That's the main reason we've been losing some close games.

"If we can play that way against the Pistons ... we should be able to do it against other teams."

                      Pick: (TBD)

                      Denver Nuggets at L.A. Lakers (-4.5, 223.5)

The Denver Nuggets beat the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves Saturday night. Barely.

The Nuggets needed a late surge from Allen Iverson and a little help from the officials down the stretch to close out a 111-108 decision as a big 11.5-point favorite. Denver is dealing with injury issues again with Nene, Chucky Atkins, and Kenyon Martin ailing, though Martin may be able to go against the Lakers.

"Over the years the players have gotten more of an attitude of making sure they're healthy and they're not going to play with a weaker body because there's so much money involved," Denver coach George Karl told the Longmont Daily Times-Call. "They realize if you lose a year in your career or you lost two years in your career, you're losing a big hunk of change."

Nuggets bettors know all about throwing money away. Denver has dropped three of its last four against the number and is 19-20 against the spread this season.

                      Pick: Lakers -4.5
