          Previews and Picks

Ice picks: Today’s best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ice Picks: Thursday's best NHL wagers

New Jersey vs. Carolina (-102, 5)

If you think special teams win hockey bets, the Devils are your team right now. New Jersey has a power play goal in each of its last four games and hasn’t allowed a goal on the penalty kill over the same span.

That translates to a 20 percent power play and a 93 percent penalty kill over the Devils’ last five games while the Hurricanes have a 16.7 percent power play and a lowly 73.7 percent penalty killing unit during that time.

It helps having Patrik Elias back in the lineup, who has three power play goals on the season and four points in his last three games. Elias missed a pair of games before returning back to the lineup three games ago.

          Pick: Devils

          Buffalo vs. Ottawa (-200, 6)

The Sabres are in the midst of their worst slump since 2003 with a dreadful 0-4-3 record in their last seven games. Things don’t exactly look like they’re on their way up either with Buffalo dealing with a pile of banged up players and a tough stretch in the schedule.

Forwards Derek Roy, Maxim Afinogenov, Daniel Paille, Tim Connolly and Toni Lydman are either questionable for Thursday’s game or are banged up enough to have missed practice time lately. Teppo Numminen has also left the blue line thin since leaving the team with a heart condition in mid-December.

The Sabres lost a shootout heartbreaker to New Jersey Tuesday night and they’ll face them again on Saturday, which makes for a three-game stint that no Eastern Conference team would envy.

Ottawa has been giving opposing goalies nightmares lately with 28 goals in its last six games. Not surprisingly all six of those games played over the total, five of which were set at at least six goals.

The Sens are 3-1 against the Sabres this year.

          Pick: Ottawa

          Phoenix vs. Edmonton (-120, 5)

There is a lot of talk lately of how the Coyotes are one of the biggest surprises this season. Somebody forgot to tell them apparently though because they seem to be just heating up.

Phoenix enters Edmonton on a five-game winning streak, which will be the second game of a four-game West Coast road trip. They beat Calgary 3-1 Thursday night and head coach Wayne Gretzky said the win was in large part to goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

Bryzgalov has played some mind-blowing goaltending this season and especially lately. He’s routinely faced with 30 or more shots a game, which makes it more impressive that the over/under is 17-19 in Yotes games this year.

The Phoenix power play is also the hottest in the league right now with seven goals in its last five games for a PP percentage of 29.2. But the best part about the Coyotes right now is their value. They’ve cashed in as underdogs of +140 or higher in five of their last 10 games.

          Pick: Phoenix
