        National Hockey League - Gameday

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        NHL Gameday
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Wednesday NHL Gameday

Mats Sundin and his Toronto Maple Leafs head west to take on Ryan Getzlaf and the Anaheim Ducks on a light Wednesday around the league. Here's your NHL Gameday:

Colorado Avalanche at Washington Capitals, 7:00pm ET

The Avalanche are hanging around the Western Conference playoff picture despite the loss of forwards Joe Sakic and Ryan Smyth to long-term injuries. Sakic underwent hernia surgery and could be out for three months or more, while Smyth has a broken ankle and will be out two months. Paul Stastny is leading the Avs offense in their place.

Washington is still deep down the Eastern Conference standings, but they've made a bit of headway with a 5-2-3 record in their past 10 games. The Caps are coming off a 5-4 overtime win over Montreal on Saturday afternoon, with Alexander Ovechkin providing two markers in the contest. Ovechkin has picked up 32 goals in 42 games this season.

Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30pm ET

The Stars busted out of a four-game losing streak by getting past the Wild 3-1 on Monday night. That put Dallas at 24-16-4 on the season, and they're battling with the Sharks and Ducks for top spot in the Pacific Division. Forward Mike Ribeiro signed a big five-year, $25 million deal before the game, and then went out and collected two points.

The Blackhawks haven't had much fun in 2008, with a lengthy injury list helping to put a dent in their win total. Martin Havlat is back in action, but forwards Jonathan Toews (knee), Jason Williams (groin), and Ben Eager (concussion) are all sidelined. Chicago has sunk down to the bottom of the conference and division standings in recent weeks.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00pm ET

The Maple Leafs started 2008 with a 4-3 win over the Lightning, but since then they've been dropped 6-2 by the Penguins and 3-2 by the Flyers. Starting goaltender Vesa Toskala has been out with a groin injury, but the team hopes that he can return to the lineup at some point this week. Toronto heads to the coast at just 2-6-2 in their past 10.

The Ducks, on the other hand, are 7-2-1 over their past 10 games, and they're 13-6-4 on their own ice. Anaheim has won three of their four games so far in January, most recently getting past the Predators 5-2 on Monday night. Travis Moen, Chris Kunitz, Chris Pronger, Corey Perry, and Ryan Getzlaf all picked up goals against the Predators.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Toronto vs. Anaheim (-190, 5.5)

The Anaheim Ducks are the hottest bet in the NHL right now and it's no big secret why. Veteran defenseman Scott Niedermayer has given the team a huge boost since returning 11 games ago after sitting out the start of the season while considering retirement.

Since Niedermayer returned, the Ducks have collected 16 of a possible 22 points. He has added a spark on the power play and has solidified a blueline corps that has allowed more than two goals only once since he laced them up again.

That means the hapless Leafs are in tough with a struggling offense that has been held to two or fewer goals in eight of its last 10 games. Toronto only won two games during those 10 contests and neither one came in regulation time.

                    Pick: Anaheim -190

                    Colorado vs. Washington (-130, 6)

Normally the Avs would be favored over the sub-.500 Caps, even on the road. But Wednesday night's matchup isn't a normal situation.

The Avs head into Washington without their top scorer, captain Joe Sakic (hernia), and third-leading scorer, Ryan Smyth (leg). To make matters worse, they face the Caps one night after facing the league’s best team, the Detroit Red Wings.

Colorado lost to Detroit 1-0 as +230 underdogs and the Avs now have five losses in their last six games. The lone win came two games ago, a 2-1 effort over the New York Islanders. Jose Theodore stopped 23 shots in that game and he may have stolen the No. 1 spot in nets from Peter Budaj after a 24-save performance Tuesday night.

                    Pick: Under six goals

                    Dallas vs. Chicago (+120, 5)

The Blackhawks are in what you'd call a bit of a slump. They've lost six straight games and have allowed 25 goals throughout that span.

Only Paris Hilton has seen more rubber than the Hawks lately, who have had trouble holding opponents to fewer than 30 shots. Last night, the Habs belted 38 shots at unfortunate netminder Patrick Lalime and four of the last seven squads have fired at least 32 shots on Chicago.

There aren't many teams the Stars would want to face right now. They have had a terrible time of putting pucks in the net, thanks to a feeble power play that hasn't scored in six games. Expect that to change tonight in a game with a total set too low.

                    Pick: Over five goals
