    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Kentucky’s basketball team has an RPI of 220 right now, last in SEC, right between SE Louisiana and Iona in the national rankings. This does not go over well in Lexington.

-- Tubby Smith’s Minnesota team has an RPI of 52, by the way; they’re fifth in country in causing turnovers (28%), but they haven’t exactly played the best schedule yet. Yes, I understand Tubby recruited just about whole Kentucky team, but running him out of town was still a mistake.

-- Clemson lost 90-88 in OT to North Carolina Sunday, a great game; Tigers were just 14-27 from foul line, UNC was
24-30. Little things make a big difference.

-- America East Conference, which was 20th in country LY, I think, has slipped badly, now ranked 28th out of the 31 conferences in America.

-- They’re one of nine leagues that rank below the Ivy League, which is sad, since all nine of those leagues can give athletic scholarships, while Ivy schools don’t.

-- The SWAC, unbelievably, is 8-86 in non-conference games vs D-I schools. That’s eight wins, 86 losses; you can pencil their champ in for the Play-In Game in Dayton, March 18, no doubt about it.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL Top 8, and other stuff........

      13) Only 80 miles from Baton Rouge from New Orleans; must have been a fun ride for those kids and coaches; what a fun team they were to watch this year, from all the conversions on fourth down, fake field goals, amidst all the rumors and job issues. Very entertaining team. Congrats.

      12) June Jones III (that’s what he was called while he was playing) took big money and the SMU job, which shows that Hawai’i’s program in serious danger. Jones saved program; would Jerry Glanville be a logical replacement? Norm Chow?

      11) Chargers were lucky Tennessee beat the Colts to make the playoffs; Cleveland would have been a tougher out than the banged-up Titans. 10) Chargers beat Tennessee twice this season, despite not scoring in first half in either game.

      9) What was Tulsa thinking Sunday night, leaving starting QB in with 5:00 to go and a 56 to freakin’ 7 lead, throwing ball so the QB could set some stupid record no one knows about? Who cares? It was classless.

With the NFL down to the Elite 8, here is how I rank them…… and yes, I think all four AFC teams are better than anyone in the NFC.

      8) Seahawks—Last time Seattle played at Lambeau in the playoffs, Hasselbeck threw INT for TD in OT. Would think Seattle has at least a puncher’s chance here, although they’ve been east of the Mississippi a lot the last few weeks.

      7) Giants—Eight straight road wins in the NFL is hard to do, but their last loss was at Dallas in Week 1. There is pressure on Wade Phillips to win here (would they can him and make Jason Garrett HC if they lose, to make sure they don’t lose the next coaching Golden Boy?)

      6) Packers—This Jennings guy looks like second coming of former Raider Cliff Branch at WR; every time you see him, he is running with the ball for a touchdown, and that’s a good thing.

      5) Cowboys—Wade Phillips has zero playoff wins, they’ve already beaten Giants twice, and TO hasn’t erupted yet. Don’t have a lot of faith in Dallas right now.

      4) Jaguars—Terrific team, but now they have to beat a 16-0 team in their own backyard. They’ll need to step their game up a lot, get some breaks, and hope New England feels the pressure of being perfect.

      3) Chargers—Bolts won here when Indy was 13-0 one year; this spread is too high, but Colts are public team now. Rivers needs to play much better, which would include a healthy Gates.

      2) Colts—Charger fans already hate the Manning family because of the Eli fiasco; Sunday won’t make things any better.

      1) Patriots—The best until someone beats them. At this point, not sure being 16-0 helps them, in fact, I’m pretty sure it makes things a little bit tougher.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      Thought of the Day
In this day and age, they criticize teams that finish second, but what an accomplishment for Ohio State to play for the national title two years in a row, after losing so many guys to the NFL before that. They have a lot to be proud of.

            For Sunday’s game (January 13)

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports: Chargers' Gates questionable for Sunday
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates is questionable for this week's game against the Indianapolis Colts after spraining a left toe Sunday's 17-6 wild-card victory over Tennessee.

Gates was taken off the field on a cart in the second quarter of the game after catching a low pass from quarterback Philip Rivers and then taking a hard hit as he tried to get up after the reception.

Gates called the injury a "dislocation" after the game.

"I took a hit," Gates told reporters. "At first, it didn't seem like a big deal. As I got up, it was weird. I tried to put pressure on it. We're searching for answers right now."

If Gates can't play, the Chargers will be without their leading receiver after the tight end piled up 984 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

Oddsmakers have the Chargers listed as nine-point underdogs for Sunday's game.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Tuesday NBA Gameday

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will hit the road to take on the Grizzlies in Memphis on Tuesday night. Here's a look at that matchup and others in NBA Gameday:

Seattle SuperSonics at Cleveland Cavaliers, 7:00pm ET

The Sonics have played 33 games this season, yet they're still looking for their 10th victory. Seattle lost their first two contests in 2008 by scores of 104-96 (to the Suns) and 108-86 (to the Wizards). Kevin Durant scored a team-high 19 points in that loss on Sunday, while Wally Szczerbiak had 18 points and Nick Collison grabbed 17 rebounds.

Cleveland, on the other hand, has won all three of their games so far in 2008 and they've climbed back up to the .500 mark on the season (17-17). The Cavs began January with back-to-back wins over the Hawks and Kings, and they knocked off the Raptors 93-90 on Sunday. LeBron James had a game-high 39 points against Toronto.

Houston Rockets at Washington Wizards, 7:00pm ET

The Rockets had a pretty forgettable December, but they're now back at the .500 mark after knocking off the Magic and Knicks in consecutive games over the weekend. Yao Ming led the way with 30 points in Houston's 103-91 win over New York on Saturday, while Tracy McGrady sat out with a knee injury; he could return to action later this week.

Washington has won just five of their past 10 games, so they haven't been able to close the gap on the first-place Magic in the Southeast Division. The Wizards, though, are on a two-game winning streak, beating Milwaukee on Friday and Seattle on Sunday. Caron Butler had a game-high 33 points against the Sonics, and Antawn Jamison added 21.

Los Angeles Lakers at Memphis Grizzlies, 8:00pm ET

The Lakers have won eight of their past 10 games and they're now breathing down the necks of the Suns in the Pacific Division. Los Angeles is perfect so far in 2008, topping the Sixers 124-93 on Friday and getting past the Pacers 112-96 Sunday. Kobe Bryant, of course, led the way with 26 points and six assists in that victory over visiting Indiana.

The Grizzlies haven't been very ferocious in their own building this season - they've won just six of their 17 home games. Memphis has also won just three of their past 10 contests, although they are coming off a 101-94 victory over the floundering Heat on Sunday. Pau Gasol picked up 28 points and 13 rebounds in that victory for the Grizzlies.

Orlando Magic at Sacramento Kings, 10:00pm ET

The Magic continue to hold down top spot in the Southeast, but after winning just five of their past 10 games they have the worst record of the six division leaders. Orlando is 0-2 so far in 2008, losing to the Nets last Wednesday and the Rockets on Friday. Jameer Nelson led the way with a team-high 20 points in Orlando's 96-94 home loss to Houston.

Sacramento won their first game in January, but since then they've fallen short versus both Cleveland and Chicago. The Kings have won just three of their past 10 games, and they're double-digits behind the Suns in the Pacific Division. Brad Miller picked up 22 points and 13 rebounds in Sacramento's 94-93 road loss versus Chicago on Saturday.
