Texas interviews Auburn's Muschamp for possible defensive coordinator job

AUBURN, Ala. -- Texas interviewed Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp on Thursday about taking a similar position with the Longhorns, according to a newspaper report.

The Birmingham News reported the interview on its Web site Thursday evening.

The paper reported that Texas is interested in Muschamp whose Auburn defense will finish in the Top 10 nationally in total defense, passing defense and scoring defense this season. Auburn held five of its last seven regular-season opponents to 10 points or less.

If he goes to Texas, Muschamp wouldn't be the first defensive coordinator to leave the Tigers for the Longhorns. Gene Chizik, Auburn's defensive coordinator from 2002-04 became the co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Texas in 2005. He became head coach at Iowa State after last season.

Muschamp spent a year with the Miami Dolphins before coming to Auburn before the 2006 season. He was the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at LSU from 2001-04.

A former Georgia defensive back, Muschamp began his coaching career in 1995 as a graduate assistant at Auburn.

Muschamp has been talked about a lot since late in the season. He was a top choice for the head coach job at Southern Mississippi, but he turned down that job. He was also on a short list at Arkansas, but the Razorbacks hired Bobby Petrino for that head coaching position.

Good Georgia Bulldog there, I'm surprised you aren't glad he is leaving! JUST KIDDING MAN, trying to give you a hard time!

All kidding aside, it is interesting that he would leave for a lateral job though.

Muschamp resigned today as Auburn's defensive coordinator to accept a similar position at the University of Texas.

Muschamp, who interviewed at Texas on Thursday, told Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville shortly after returning from Austin this afternoon that he had decided to accept an offer from Longhorn coach Mack Brown. Muschamp leaves after two years on the Auburn staff.

The Auburn president and Board of Trustees recently approved a raise for Muschamp that would have made his salary $425,000 in 2008.He had a two-year contract with no buyout clause. He would have been the highest paid assistant coach in the Southeastern Conference.
