    Six-pack for Wednesday

Brian Billick lost his job with the Ravens Monday, hmmmm

-- The current owner of Ravens wasn't the owner when the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV; that didn't help him.

-- Billick was said to be a QB guru, but 14 QB's started for Baltimore in the Billick era. Not what they had in mind.

-- One QB who Billick cut was Derek Anderson, who had a great year for the rival Browns this season.

-- Ravens traded up to draft Kyle Boller, who doesn't seem like he was worth trading up for.

-- In nine years, Baltimore's offense never ranked higher in the NFL than 14th; his defense was out of top ten once.

-- Billick was 80-64 in nine years with Ravens, winning the Super Bowl once in his four playoff appearances. This is a very good record; he'll get another chance, I'd think.

Wednesday's List of 13: Wrapping up two days of bowls

      13) Big day for Lloyd Carr and Michigan, who went out in big way, upsetting Florida, gaining 524 yards against the Gators.

      12) Texas Tech once again rallied from big deficit to win bowl game, beating Virginia at 31-28 at gun, after trailing 21-7 at the half. Harrell threw 69 passes with no interceptions. Tech has a unique system that has to be tough to prepare for.

      11) Arkansas once again was terrible in its bowl, losing 38-7 to Missouri team that ran ball down Hogs' throats, gaining a whopping 323 rushing yards against Arkansas team that had yet another soap opera of a season.

      10) Wisconsin's Tyler Donovan was like a pinata against the Volunteers Tuesday, getting tended to by trainers three times in first half alone, but what a tough kid he is, getting back up and leading his Badgers, who lost 21-17 to Tennessee.

      9) Colorado, Indiana got smoked early in their bowls because they didn't belong; at least Buffaloes rallied to make game out of it. Hoosiers looked like a high school team in first half.

      8) Auburn-Clemson game was fierce struggle; Clemson is 2-6 vs spread now in bowls under Tommy Bowden, who always seems to be under some kind of fire down there, where there are very high expectations.

      7) Someone has to explain to me why the replay system in the college game is so much faster than the NFL version. NFL is so time-conscious, you'd think they'd want the faster system.

      6) Oregon found their QB of the future in young Roper.

      5) Rick Neuheisel made an appearance at Rose Bowl, which is UCLA's home field, of course. Will be interesting to see how quickly Bruins improve in Pac-10; Neuheisel can coach.

      4) Florida State's "scandal" revolved around open book test on the Intermet, where people were given answers to quicken the whole process, I guess. How dumb do you have to be if you need to cheat on an open book test? Anyway, Seminoles played their hearts out in 35-28 loss to Kentucky.

      3) Mountain West teams are 4-1 in bowl games this season.

      2) Purdue won a bowl game where they had more points than rushing yards (51-41); you don't see that every day.

      1) Interim'lame duck coaches didn't do too well this season in bowls; interim/lame ducks were 1-7 SU, 4-4 vs spread, going into the West Virginia game Wednesday.

            NBA
            Betting Matchup Notes

            Wednesday, January 2

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today's key NBA betting matchup notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Wednesday's key NBA matchup notes

            Detroit at Washington (+5, 192)

Antawn Jamison averaged 21.7 points and 8.0 boards in three full games against the Pistons last season, but played only five minutes in his last game against them, leaving with a knee injury midway through the first quarter of Washington's 104-99 victory on Jan. 30.

That win earned the Wizards a split of these teams' four-game seasons series in 2006-07.

            Chicago at Charlotte (-1, 191 ½)

The Bulls now will try for their fourth straight win over Charlotte (11-18) and third this season. The Bulls won 91-82 in Charlotte on Dec. 5 in the last meeting behind a season-high 30 points from Luol Deng.

            New Jersey at Orlando (-6, 199 ½)

Orlando, the league-leader with 15 road victories, is just 7-6 at Amway Arena, but has won its last two contests there by an average of 11.5 points.

            Atlanta at Cleveland (-5 ½, 184 ½)

Cleveland has won 12 of its last 14 over Atlanta, but the Hawks are in the midst of an impressive turnaround.

            Memphis at Indiana (-7, 210)

Including a 121-111 victory in Memphis on Nov. 3, Indiana has won six of its last seven meetings with the Grizzlies to take a 20-4 advantage in the all-time series.

            Houston at Boston (-10, 180)

Houston has won four of its last five at Boston, including a 111-80 win last March, but the Rockets are just 8-10 on the road.

            Sacramento at New York (-3)

The injury-riddled Kings look to sweep their season series with the Knicks. Sacramento beat New York 123-118 in double-overtime on Nov. 16.

            Milwaukee at Miami (off)

The Heat have won 10 of their last 12 games over the Bucks - including two of three last season - and won those two games by a combined 49 points.

            Portland at Minnesota (+5 ½, 191 ½)

The Blazers' winning streak, which included a 109-98 victory over Minnesota (4-26) on Friday night, has put them in contention in the Western Conference after starting 5-12.

            Golden State at Dallas (-5 ½, 213)

The Warriors head to Dallas for the first time since they stunned the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs. Dallas won 120-115 at Golden State on Nov. 8. That defeat ended Golden State's five-game regular season win streak over Dallas.

            Philadelphia at Utah (-9, 196)

The Jazz have also won four of five overall against the 76ers, including a 106-95 win at Philadelphia on Nov. 28. Jazz point guard Deron Williams had 15 points and 15 assists in that game, and has averaged 15.0 assists in his last three against the Sixers.

            New Orleans at L.A. Clippers (+4 ½, 184)

The Hornets got 24 points from their bench versus the Clippers, but their reserves combined for just six points on 3-of-19 shooting on Dec. 24. The Hornets won the game 98-89 in New Orleans.
