          STARS
          Friday

-Allen Iverson, Nuggets, scored 39 points to lead Denver to a 124-120 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

-Ben Gordon, Bulls, scored 19 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter to lead Chicago to a 103-99 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

-Dwight Howard, Magic, had 29 points and 20 rebounds in a 121-114 overtime win over the Heat.

          BASKETBALL ROYALTY

Phil Jackson pulled even with Red Auerbach in regular-season victories, 5 1/2 seasons after tying the Boston Celtics' coach for the most NBA championships won. The Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 123-109 Friday night, giving Jackson his 938th career win and a share of seventh place on the career list. Jackson will get a chance to pass Auerbach when the Lakers host the Celtics on Sunday night in the 177th regular-season meeting of the NBA's greatest rivalry. They've faced each other 10 times in the finals, with Boston winning the first eight and the Lakers prevailing in 1985 and 1987.

          NOT ENOUGH

Dwight Howard had 29 points and 20 rebounds, Hedo Turkoglu capped his 22-point night by hitting a huge 3-pointer with 11 seconds left and the Magic survived some late-game Miami heroics to beat the Heat 121-114 on Friday night - giving coach Stan Van Gundy a victory in his return to South Florida. Wade matched a career high with 48 points, 20 of them coming in the fourth quarter and all of them in regulation for Miami, which fell to 8-22.

          STREAKING

Brandon Roy scored 22 points despite not playing the second quarter, and the Portland Trail Blazers got their league-leading 12th straight victory Friday night by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 109-98. The streak matches Portland's best run since winning 12 in a row during the 2001-02 season, the team's second-longest stretch. Portland's longest streak was 16 games in the 1990-91 season.

          WINNING DEBUT

Ben Gordon scored 19 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter and the Chicago Bulls beat the Milwaukee Bucks 103-99 Friday night to give Jim Boylan a win in his debut as interim coach. Boylan was promoted from his assistant's role Thursday, replacing Scott Skiles, who was fired on Christmas Eve after the Bulls' horrendous start. Chicago is now 10-17.

          DIALING IT DOWN

Amare Stoudemire scored 28 points on 12-of-15 shooting Friday night and the Phoenix Suns won for the first time this season with fewer than 100 points, pulling away over the final 1 1/2 minutes to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 94-88. The Suns were 0-5 when scoring under 100.

          STRONG IN DEFEAT

Miami's Dwyane Wade matched a career high with 48 points in a 121-114 overtime loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday night. ... Michael Redd scored 34 points for the Bucks in a 103-99 loss to the Chicago Bulls. ... Baron Davis had 29 points and 13 assists in Golden State's 124-120 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

          SPEAKING

''The longer you stay here, the more wins you're going to accumulate. But I've never really followed that stuff, you know? I think the night that made the most sense to me, in terms of numbers of wins, was when I got my 500th and Bill Fitch was coaching on the other side. He was my college coach, and he came over and shook my hand after the game.'' - Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who pulled even with Red Auerbach in regular-season victories at 938 with a 123-109 win over the Utah Jazz on Friday night.

                Seattle at Atlanta (-1)

Why Seahawks cover: Mike Holmgren said he might not rest his players. Defense can set a team record for fewest points allowed in a season if it can hold the Falcons under 13. Underdog is 4-1 ATS in last five series meetings. Road team is 4-1 ATS in last five meetings.

                    Saturday's Games

                    Games of the Day

Wisconsin is 9-2, 1-1 on road, losing 82-58 at Duke, winning by 22 at Milwaukee; favorite covered five of seven lined games for Badgers. Texas lost its first game 78-72 at Michigan State week ago (+3.5); they're 2-1 vs spread when favored. Longhorns won 63-61 at UCLA, 97-78 vs Tennessee in two best wins so far.

Northern Iowa beat Bradley twice LY, 76-65 at home (-4), 79-70 here (+8.5) then lost to Braves in MVC tourney 51-48 (+1). UNI is 4-3 in last seven games after 4-0 start; they're 6-1 away from home, oddly enough, losing 61-55 at So. Dakota St. Bradley is 1-3 in last four games; they're 3-5 vs spread as the favorite.

Tennessee won eight games in row, winning at Xavier, beating West Va on neutral court, beating Western Ky on neutral floor. Gonzaga split last four games after 7-1 start; they got Heytfeldt back in lineup last week- both their losses are by four points, at home to Washington State, at Oklahoma. Game is in Seattle, so not on Gonzaga's home court, but it'll be a Gonzaga crowd.

West Virginia won its last eight games; they're 3-1 vs spread as favorite- they start Big East play Thursday at Notre Dame; this is their final tuneup for that. Oklahoma is 8-3, 2-2 away from its home court, losing 63-53 vs Memphis in NYC, 66-55 at USC and 66-62 to SF Austin-- they beat Arkansas, Gonzaga last 2 games.

Pittsburgh crushed Dayton 84-54 at home LY (-13); Pitt is 11-0, but hasn't played since OT win vs Duke nine days ago, so they could be ripe for upset against Flyer club that won nine in row since 67-56 loss at George Mason in second game of year. UD is 2-0 vs spread as dog this season. Pitt is 4-2 as a favorite.

                    Rest of card

-- Purdue lost two of last three games, failed to cover last five tries as favorite. Florida Int'l lost four in row, seven of last eight games; they're 1-4 vs spread as underdog. This is Boilers' last dress rehearsal for Big 11.

-- Ark-Little Rock is 9-2, 2-1 on road, winning 71-40 at LMU and 59-52 at Rice, losing 80-61 at Creighton in last game. Trojans are 3-1 vs spread as favorite. Northern Illinois lost last three games, is 2-9 this season, but covered five of last six as underdog.

-- San Diego lost three of last four games; they're 4-4 vs spread as dig this season. Kentucky snapped 4-game skid with win in last game (69-47 vs Tenn Tech); they're 2-2 vs spread as a fave.

-- Towson lost four of last five games, with last two going into OT; they're 2-2 vs spread as underdog. Auburn is favored in a lined game for first time this season; they've won three in a row, seven of last eight, but loss was 88-59 vs West Virginia.

-- TCU won last four games, including beating Tex-Arlington when UTA was unbeaten, is 8-3 after Wednesday's win. Rice is 2-7 in season where they're playing without home court, using various sites around Houston; they're 0-5 vs spread as a dog.

-- LSU (+1) lost 88-72 at Washington LY; Tigers lost split last eight games, struggled to beat Oregon State last game- they're 0-4 vs spread as favorite. Washington lost only road game by 25 at Oklahoma State; they're better with Appleby back.

-- Arkansas lost two of last three games, including strange loss to Appalchian State last time out; they're 2-3 as favorite; coach Pelphrey has complained that team's hoop IQ isn't great. ULM got hammered by Kansas, Ole Miss, but pulled upset at Iowa.

-- Wyoming (-1) lost 75-73 at Milwaukee LY; Cowboys are 5-5, but haven't won consecutive games yet- they're 1-3 vs spread as favorite. UWM has been off for 10 days; they've lost six of last seven games, are 1-5 vs spread as an underdog.

                        Atlanta at Dallas
Perhaps it was a sign of things to come when Atlanta upset the Mavericks in the season opener. Since that time the Hawks have looked like a playoff team and are three games over .500 (15-12) this late in the season for the first time in nine years. Dallas is certainly a playoff team, but has looked sluggish in back-to-back losses, averaging just 85.5 points and shooting only 39.6 percent in the two contests. With the Hawks riding a five-game winning streak, they are the underdog pick (+8 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Atlanta favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Atlanta (+8 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
