    Six-pack for Wednesday

    Six-pack from Christmas

-- If you want to laugh, check out the spread for Week 17 in NFL; some major guesswork will be going on, as far as what starters are going to play how long for whom. Normal cannot be used to describe some of these spreads.

-- Charger-Bronco game was first Christmas Eve night tilt in history of the NFL. Still not sure its a great idea; I know it would have been a bad idea, if I was still married.

-- Nice of the Bulls to fire Scott Skiles on Chritsmas Eve; it couldn't have been done two days earlier, or next week?

-- All 59 points in Giant-Buffalo game were scored going in same direction, from left-to-right on TV.

-- None of the Colts' 22 starters have played for another NFL team, pretty impressive scouting by Indianapolis.

-- Chargers outscored their opponents 81-0 in first quarter of their home games this season.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on XMas night

      13) Christmas is a dismal TV day, really bad. ESPN actually got 90 minutes out of the national Long Driving tournament Tuesday, an interesting show, but not 90 minutes worth. It is noteworthy that former NBA great Rick Barry won one of the senior age group divisions, hitting golf ball around 365 yds.

      12) First place in the main division was $125,000; if there was an event that cries for steroids testing, it is this one, where a couple of yards here and there makes all the difference.

      11) Would be interesting to know how these guys do playing real golf, where chipping and putting are critical.

      10) If you have a phone betting account with NY OTB, and you keep $300 in your phone account, you get track payouts, something I never knew until yesterday.

      9) If you bought two prime season tickets to Bronx baseball games last season, your bill was $24,300, for two tickets; this coming season, those same two season tickets are $40,500.

      8) If you run a bowl game, just invite Boise State for next year they play great bowl games. Boise lost 41-38 Sunday night, after winning maybe the great bowl ending ever last year, on a two-point conversion in OT. Fun team to watch.

      7) So far, through 16 weeks of NFL, there have been 123 TDs scored by defenses, special teams, an average of 7.7/week.

      6) In 88 games where one team scored more defense/special teams TDs than its opponent, those teams went 65-23, for a winning percentage of 73.9%.

      5) Why would the NHL take Christmas off, when there is so much TV airtime to be had? You mean to tell me NBC would air an outdoor game January 1, but not an indoor one on slow TV night like Christmas night? Hard to believe.

      4) Next Christmas, you can bet the Celtics will be on TV.

      3) So far in bowl games, favorites are 3-3 vs spread, and totals are also even at 3-3. Still 26 bowls to go; log on every day for analysis on every game, and selections on a few.

      2) Portland Trailblazers are first NBA team to win 11 games in a row, after losing nine of their previous ten games. Weird.

      1) There might be more Patriot fans in Swamp Saturday night than Giant fans, and Giants are 10-5. Not a lot of love for the Giants, who make playoffs every year, but don't bring out a lot of positive energy from their fans.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Miami at Philadelphia (off)

Though Philadelphia has lost two straight home contests, that streak should end against the Heat.

Miami lost to the 76ers last March and opened this campaign with nine losses in its first 11 contests outside South Beach.

To make matters worse for Miami, veteran Alonzo Mourning will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing knee surgery. Mourning was averaging 1.7 blocks.

            Pick: 76ers

            Washington at Charlotte (-4 1/2, 188 1/2)

Charlotte has been tough at home lately.

The Bobcats have won three of their last four in the Tar Heel State, including last week’s stunning 98-92 victory over the Jazz.

Charlotte newcomer Nazr Mohammed, acquired last week from the Pistons, had a season-high 20 points and 14 rebounds against the Jazz. Mohammed is averaging 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks since joining his new team.

            Pick: Bobcats

            Indiana at Atlanta (-2, 200)

The Hawks have been flying high in the Peach State recently.

Atlanta has won four of its last five at home, including last Wednesday’s 117-111 triumph over the Heat.

Hawks star Joe Johnson scored 26 points against Miami. Johnson, averaging 22 points this season, missed last April’s 118-102 victory over the Pacers.

The Hawks are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.

            Pick: Hawks

            New York at Orlando (off)

What’s the best way to snap a home losing streak? Host the Knicks.

Orlando has lost four straight at home and are 0-4 against the spread (ATS) in that stretch.

New York, meanwhile, is 1-10 straight up on the road, including last Friday’s 10-point setback to the Bobcats

The Magic trounced New York last month in the Big Apple.

            Pick: Magic

            Detroit at New Jersey (+6, 185 1/2)

The Pistons have been scorching, especially outside the Motor City.

Detroit is 5-1 ATS in its last six road games and is 9-1 ATS in its last 10 overall. It downed the first-place Celtics last Wednesday, limiting Boston to a mere 85 points – well below that team’s season scoring average.

Pistons rookie guard Rodney Stuckey made his NBA debut Friday against the Grizzlies. Stuckey, who missed the first 25 games with a broken hand, accumulated two points and two assists in less than seven minutes.

            Pick: Pistons

            New Orleans at Memphis (+2 1/2, 201)

The Grizzlies have been tame lately.

Memphis has lost eight of its last 10 overall and has covered the spread just three times in that stretch.

New Orleans toppled the Grizzlies on Dec. 9 in the teams’ most recent meeting. Leading scoring Chris Paul, averaging 20 points, poured in a season-high 43 points against Memphis.

            Pick: Hornets

            Chicago at San Antonio (-9 1/2, 187)

The Bulls are a dismal 3-9 against the spread outside the Windy City.

Chicago leading scorer Luol Deng, averaging less than 19 points, scored eight in last Friday’s 25-point road loss to the Celtics.

It won’t get much better Wednesday when the Bulls visit the Spurs, a team that’s 7-1 ATS in the last seven home games.

            Pick: Spurs

            Milwaukee at Denver (off)

Milwaukee has struggled on the road but should keep it close versus the inconsistent Nuggets.

Denver is 0-5 ATS in its last five at the Pepsi Center and has failed to cover the spread in five straight overall.

Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva, who missed time last week with a sprained ankle, should be available against the Nuggets.

            Pick: Bucks

            Dallas at Utah (-3, 203 1/2)

There’s no place like home, especially for the Jazz.

Utah is an impressive 9-2 in Salt Lake City compared to a miserable 6-12 on the road. It is also 6-2 ATS in its last eight home tilts.

The Mavs narrowly covered the spread against the Jazz on Dec. 8 in the Big D.

            Pick: Jazz

            Boston at Sacramento (-7, 187 1/2)

The surging Celtics are 4-0 both SU and ATS in their last four road games so it’s hard to imagine them losing to Sacramento.

Boston trounced the lowly Kings 90-78 on Dec. 12 without starting center Kendrick Perkins. Rajon Rondo, averaging nine points, also didn’t score against Sacramento.

            Pick: Celtics

            Minnesota at Golden State (-12 1/2, 208)

The rebuilding Timberwolves couldn’t slow down Golden State at home. They definitely won’t be able to do so in Oakland.

Minnesota conceded 111 points on 48 percent shooting to Golden State on Dec. 19. It permitted three Warriors to score at least 20 points each, including Al Harrington’s team-high 25 points.

The Timberwolves have lost eight of their last 10 overall.

            Pick: Warriors

              Miami at Philadelphia

The teams haven't met this season, but Philadelphia took three of four from Miami last season, including both home games.

              Washington at Charlotte (-4 1/2, 188 1/2)

Washington is 10-3 all-time against the Bobcats, including 5-2 in Charlotte.

              Indiana at Atlanta (-2, 200)

              New York at Orlando

Dwight Howard had 22 points and 20 rebounds in a 112-102 win at New York Nov. 9, but the Knicks won the most recent meeting in Orlando, 94-86 on Feb. 3.

The teams have met once this season and Detroit was impressive in a 118-95 home win over New Jersey on Dec. 2.

              New Orleans at Memphis (+2 1/2, 201)

Memphis has lost three in a row to New Orleans - including two at home - and eight of the last nine in the series. The Hornets, though, needed overtime to win both meetings with the Grizzlies this season.

              Chicago at San Antonio (-9 1/2, 187)

Chicago has dropped 14 of 17 against the Spurs, including seven of eight in San Antonio.

              Milwaukee at Denver

Milwaukee also has lost eight of nine to the Nuggets since the 2002-03 season, although their one win came in Denver by a 110-89 score in February 2006.

              Dallas at Utah (-3, 203 1/2)

This is the first meeting between the teams since Utah's Deron Williams and Dallas' Josh Howard engaged in a scoring duel in the Mavs' 125-117 victory on Dec. 8.

              Boston at Sacramento (+7, 187 1/2)

The Celtics have lost 11 consecutive games in Sacramento since Feb. 16, 1996.

              Minnesota at Golden State (-12 1/2, 208)

Golden State has won four in a row over the Timberwolves by an average of more than 18 points.

                  Wednesday's College Basketball

                  Game of the Day

Louisville won last two games, is 7-3, winning 85-75 (Marshall) 70-65 (New Mexico State) in last week; Cardinals are 2-6 when a favorite, failing to cover last five tries when giving points, so it is obvious they're struggling. Morehead State is 4-6, 2-4 out of OVC, worst-rated league in country; they're 1-3 as an underdog outside of the OVC. Eagles are 2-4 vs spread away from home.

                  Rest of card
-- Only one lined game on Wednesday's card.

Wednesday's key NHL betting matchup notes

                      Carolina at N.Y. Rangers

The Rangers had won three straight against the Hurricanes before Ward shut them out in the most recent meeting.

                      Tampa Bay at Washington

Tampa Bay has only three road victories this season, but one of those rare road wins was in Washington on Nov. 10.

                      Atlanta at Columbus

The Thrashers have not played in Columbus since the Blue Jackets to a 4-2 win on Nov. 7, 2003. These teams' only meeting since that one came in Atlanta on Dec. 9, 2005, and the Thrashers won 5-2 to improve to 5-2-1 in this all-time series.

                      Ottawa at Buffalo

These teams have split two meetings this season, with each winning at home, after the Senators ousted the Sabres in five games in last season's conference finals.

                      Toronto at N.Y. Islanders

Toronto is 7-1-3 in its last 11 meetings with the Islanders.

                      Nashville at Chicago

Patrick Sharp has four goals and an assist during a three-game point streak, a run that started last Wednesday when he scored twice in Chicago's 5-2 win over Nashville.

                      Detroit at St. Louis

St. Louis has won four straight on home ice against Detroit.

                      Minnesota at Dallas

The Minnesota Wild will try to avoid their seventh straight road loss to the Stars, while Marty Turco is 9-4-1 with a 1.78 GAA in his career against the Wild.

                      San Jose at Los Angeles

Los Angeles beat the Sharks 3-2 in a shootout on Nov. 28 in the teams' last meeting, but are 2-10-1 since then. The Kings lost 4-3 at Nashville on Saturday and haven't lost eight straight since dropping its final 11 games in 2003-04.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks (-140, 5 1/2)

The Blackhawks haven't posted four straight wins yet this season and face a Predators squad looking to tie their season high of three straight wins.

Right winger Martin Havlat had three assists in Chicago's 5-2 win over Nashville last Wednesday but suffered a pulled groin in the same game and is listed as questionable for tonight's rematch. If Chicago's going to extend their streak, they'll look to rookie standouts Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane who have a combined 21 goals and 40 assists. Patrick Sharp leads the Blackhawks in scoring with 18 goals and leads the league in short-handed goals with six. Sharp has four goals in Chicago's three-game streak.

                        Pick: Blackhawks -140

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (+140, 5 1/2)

Tonight's visit to Los Angeles may prove to be a belated Christmas gift for the Sharks who need a win to avoid posting their longest losing streak of the season.

San Jose lost three straight home games before a three-day holiday break. The Sharks have had more success on the road, however, going 12-3-2 compared to a 6-9-3 home record.

The Kings won the teams' two most recent meetings, both in San Jose, but the Sharks have a 6-4 edge in their last 10 meetings overall.

Joe Thornton has failed to find the scoreboard in three of San Jose's last four games, but he has two goals and three assists in four games against Los Angeles this year. Still, the Sharks should have enough to overpower the 12-23-2 Kings.

                        Pick: Sharks -150

Line move: Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres (-107, 6)

The line on the Ottawa Senators moved from +107 to -103 in a few hours Wednesday morning.

                        Pick: Sens -103

                          REBOUNDS

Cleveland center Zydrunas Ilgauskas had eight rebounds in Tuesday's 96-82 victory over Miami, moving him into second place (4,673) on the Cavs' career rebounding list, passing John ''Hot Rod'' Williams, who had 4,669. Brad Daugherty is first with 5,227.

                          SPEAKING

''I feel like I could play another game right now. I put in all the hard work just for this. It's paying off. This definitely was one of my better games. Made a pretty big impact, teammates looking for me, wide open a lot of the times and they found me today. So far, perfect Christmas.'' - Lakers center Andrew Bynum after scoring a career-high 28 points and matching his career high by playing 42 minutes in Tuesday night's 122-115 victory over Phoenix.

Utah continued to struggle on its recent road trip, dropping three of four, and has now lost nine of its last 11. Returning home where the Jazz are 9-2 should help, but they get a tough opener tonight against Dallas. The Mavs seem to have straightened out their earlier problems and have now won five straight with reigning MVP Dirk Nowitzki scoring at least 30 points in the last three.
