Memphis is a perfect 8-0 SU this season but has covered the spread just twice.

#19 Arizona at UNLV (CSTV | 10 PM ET)

It was announced on Tuesday that Arizona assistant coach Kevin O'Neill will succeed Lute Olson when he decides to retire. O'Neill is filling in for Olson as head coach now since he took a personal leave of absence on November 4th. "It's an unbelievable honor to follow Lute Olson," O'Neill said. "I'm thrilled to get the opportunity and will work to continue the superb tradition of Arizona basketball when Lute is done." Insiders believe that decision can only help the Wildcats, especially the underclassmen who might be wondering about their future. EDGE: ARIZONA
UNLV is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 home games.
The OVER is 6-2 in UNLV's last 8 vs. Pac-10.

              Wednesday's key NHL matchup notes

              Buffalo at NY Islanders (+115, 5 1/2)

The Sabres' three-game win streak began last Wednesday with a 5-3 home win over the Islanders, the teams' first meeting since New York opened the season with a home-and-home sweep of Buffalo.

              Los Angeles at Detroit (-331, 5 1/2)

                NHL Gameday
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Wednesday NHL Gameday

Nicklas Lidstrom and the Detroit Red Wings will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. Here is your NHL Gameday . . .

Buffalo Sabres at New York Islanders, 7:00pm ET

The Sabres don't look like they'll repeat as Northeast champions this season, but a modest three-game winning streak at least has improved their chances of getting out of the division basement. Buffalo has knocked off the Islanders, Capitals, and Blackhawks in their past three outings, and they've won five of their eight games so far in December.

The Islanders, on the other hand, have been tumbling over the past couple of weeks. New York has won just twice in eight December outings (beating the Lightning and the Coyotes) to fall into the Atlantic Division cellar. Rick DiPietro allowed five goals on 41 shots in the Isles' 5-3 loss to Buffalo last week, and they fell to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Los Angeles Kings at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30pm ET

The Kings now have both forward Alexander Frolov and goaltender Jason LaBarbera back from injury, and they'll need all hands on deck if they hope to crawl out of the basement of the Western Conference. Los Angeles has been terrible so far in December, and a game against the league's top team is not a great Christmas present.

Detroit has picked up at least one point in each of their eight December contests, going 7-0-1 over that stretch. Their only blemish? An overtime loss to the Oilers last Thursday night. The Red Wings knocked off the Capitals 4-3 in a shootout on Monday night, and they lead the league with a 24-6-3 record and 51 points through 33 games this season.

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30pm ET

The Predators have slumped in December, and they've tumbled out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference. Lately Nashville's problem has been scoring goals - in three outings last week (against the Wings, Avs, and Avs again) the Predators managed to score just three times. Not surprisingly, all of those contests were losses.

Chicago has played poorly this month as well - their December record stands at only 1-6-0 heading into play on Wednesday night. The Blackhawks' only win this month came against the lowly Kings last week, and now they're fighting with the Preds to stay out of the Central Division basement. Chicago and Nashville will play again on Boxing Day.

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00pm ET

The Avalanche have been playing some of the league's weaker teams this month, and as a result they've been moving up the standings. Colorado did manage to lose twice to the Blue Jackets over the past two weeks, but they also laid a 9-5 beating on the Blues on December 9. Milan Hejduk led the way that night with three goals and three assists.

Scott Niedermayer is back, and the Ducks are hoping that means the victories will start to come back as well. Anaheim dealt forward Andy McDonald to the Blues in exchange for forward Doug Weight last week, which helped them fit Niedermayer into the team's salary cap. Anaheim also recalled promising forward Bobby Ryan from their farm team.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Los Angeles Kings at Detroit Red Wings (-319, 5 1/2)

Tonight the Red Wings are heavy favorites against the Kings for good reasons. Detroit is 9-0-1 in its last 10 games and leads the NHL with 24 wins. The Wings have won 14 of the last 15 games against L.A. and the Kings are 0-7-3 with one tie at Joe Louis Arena since 2000.

The Wings' Henrik Zetterberg also has 47 points on the season including seven goals and five assists during a six-game home point streak. Dominik Hasek has won five straight starts against the Kings and is 14-4 with two ties in 20 career games.

                        Pick: Red Wings -1 1/2 (-110)

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks (-142, 5 1/2)

The Predators and Blackhawks were two of the better bets in the NHL coming into December. Since then both clubs have been struggling to find the win column. Tonight something has to give when the two teams meet at the United Center.

This will be the third matchup of the season between these teams and the Predators have had a lot of success scoring goals against the Blackhawks. They beat Chicago 5-4 in overtime and 5-2 already this year and have a 6-0-2 record against Chicago since 2006. Both Nikolai Khabibulin and Patrick Lalime have struggled against Nashville in their careers. Kbabibulin has lost his last six starts to the Predators while Lalime has lost his last four starts overall.

                        Pick: Over 5 1/2

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks (-127, 5 1/2)

No Joe? No problem. Since Avs captain Joe Sakic went down on Nov. 30, Colorado has been cashing in on a regular basis. The Avs have won three in a row and five of their last six.

Bettors only have to look to Colorado's potent offense to figure out why. The Avalanche are one of just eight teams with at least 100 goals this season and the top line of Ryan Smyth, Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk has 38 points in the last nine games. Factor in improved defense and goaltending that has only allowed four total goals during the current three-game winning streak and the Avs have a recipe for success. Goaltender Peter Budaj has stopped 80 of 84 shots over that span.

                        Pick: Avalanche +117
