        Saturday, December 15

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sacramento Kings at Washington Wizards (-8, 197 ½)

The Wizards have been magical at home recently, going 4-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in their last five at the Verizon Center.

Washington is coming off Thursday’s 104-91 victory against Miami. Caron Butler, who tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, was one of four Wizards to register a double-double.

The Wizards are 3-1 ATS in their last four meetings with the Kings in D.C. They are also an impressive 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall outings.

        Pick: Wizards

Charlotte Bobcats at Atlanta Hawks (-7, 186)

Charlotte has lost and failed to cover in each of its last seven road games. That includes last Sunday’s 19-point setback in Motown.

The Bobcats are averaging a meager 88 points in their last five games outside the Tar Heel State, which is four points less than their season average. They are also allowing more than 105 points per game during that stretch.

Charlotte lost to the Hawks on Nov. 14, failing to cover as a 5 ½-point road underdog.

        Pick: Hawks

Memphis Grizzlies at Orlando Magic (off)

Memphis has covered the spread just twice in its last six outside Tennessee.

The Grizzlies managed a meager 78 points on 41 percent shooting in last Saturday’s setback to the Hawks. Rudy Gay (17) and Pau Gasol (14) were the lone starters to score in double figures.

Gasol sprained his toe in Tuesday’s setback to the Pistons and could miss Saturday’s tilt versus the Magic. He is second on the Grizzlies in scoring (17 PPG) and is grabbing more than seven rebounds per night.

        Pick: Magic

New Jersey Nets at New York Knicks (+3, 188)

New York could be without two starters on Saturday.

Quentin Richardson, who strained his right knee in Wednesday’s 117-110 loss to the SuperSonics, is questionable. Richardson is averaging seven points and six rebounds.

Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury, listed as doubtful, has missed three of the Knicks’ last five games because of the recent passing of his father. He is also averaging more than 13 points and four assists.

The Knicks are 1-4 ATS in their last four against New Jersey. They also have failed to cover the spread in their last four games at Madison Square Garden.

        Pick: Nets

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-5, 207 ½)

Miami is just 2-8 SU and 3-6 ATS in South Beach, including Friday’s loss to a Washington team playing without Gilbert Arenas.

Shaquille O’Neal scored seven points on 3-for-6 shooting against the Wiz. Dwyane Wade took 11 shots and scored a mere 18 points, five points below his average.

The Pacers have covered the spread in seven of their last 10 tilts against Miami, including four straight in South Beach dating to 2005.

        Pick: Pacers

        Philadelphia 76ers at Cleveland Cavaliers (-7 ½, 191)

Cleveland has won three of its last four in Ohio, including Tuesday’s triumph over the surging Pacers.

LeBron James played just 22 minutes off the bench, but scored 17 points. James is averaging more than 29 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.

Philadelphia is 1-2 ATS in its last three trips to the Buckeye State dating back to February 2006.

        Pick: Cavaliers

Phoenix Suns at New Orleans Hornets (off)

Excluding Monday’s hiccup in Minnesota, the Phoenix Suns have been shining outside Arizona.

Phoenix is 10-3 SU on the road and has covered the spread in three of its last four road outings. The Suns also are averaging 117 points in their last five road tilts.

New Orleans is 1-4 ATS in its last five contests in the Big Easy. The club is also 2-6 ATS in its last six meetings with Phoenix.

        Pick: Suns

Minnesota Timberwolves at Milwaukee Bucks (-9, 193 ½)

Don’t be fooled by the Bucks’ 10-2 record at the Bradley Center. They aren’t that good.

Milwaukee has lost eight of its last 10 and is 2-8 ATS during that stretch. The Bucks have also lost two of their last three in Wisconsin, including a 15-point setback against Philadelphia.

Minnesota has covered the spread in five of its last seven road outings, including a narrow setback earlier this week in Philadelphia.

        Pick: Timberwolves

        Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets (-3 ½, 189 ½)

Houston has won three straight in Texas, including Wednesday against the Pistons. Tracy McGrady scored 29 points and six assists against Detroit, five points above his team-leading average.

The Mavericks are 2-3 ATS in their last five road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six versus the Western Conference.

The home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven tilts between the Mavs and Rockets.

        Pick: Rockets

Denver Nuggets at San Antonio Spurs (off)

Tim Duncan should return to the lineup, but the same can’t be said for Tony Parker.

Parker missed Thursday’s matchup against the Lakers after suffering a sprained ankle in the Spurs’ Nov. 30 matchup with the Timberwolves.

“The MRI was negative but it’s real sore,” Spurs head coach Greg Popovich told reporters. “It became obvious in the Golden State game. Two days of rest didn't do any good. I just had to make the call and have him sit. He buys it. He understands we had to do it.”

Duncan, who has missed four straight games with a sprained ankle, is averaging more than 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Nuggets are 0-4 ATS in their last four trips to San Antonio.

        Pick: Spurs

        Seattle SuperSonics at Utah Jazz (-12 ½, 212 ½)

The absence of Mehmet Okur has not been a problem for the Jazz.

Utah second-year forward Paul Millsap replaced Okur in the starting lineup Sunday against the Suns and amassing 20 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

Okur could also miss Saturday’s tilt with Seattle due to a shoulder injury, which should give Millsap his third straight start. Millsap is averaging six points and eight rebounds.

The Jazz are 14-5-1 ATS in their last 20 contests in Salt Lake.

        Pick: Jazz

The Mavericks will be playing their third game in four nights when they take on Houston on Saturday. Dallas had a home game against New Orleans on Friday night and traveled to Toronto on Wednesday. Against the Raptors, the Mavericks were hammered 92-76 as a 4-point favorite. The 76 points scored in that game were by far the Mavericks’ lowest total of the season. Jason Terry led Dallas with 21 points in the loss, while Josh Howard delivered 19 points. Dirk Nowitzki had a slow night with only 13 points on 6-of-15 shooting. As a team Dallas shot only 38 percent from the floor.

The Rockets should be much fresher than Dallas with a two-day break before Saturday’s game. Houston last played on Wednesday when they clipped Detroit 80-77 as a 3-point favorite. Tracy McGrady led the Rockets with 29 points and Yao Ming had 21 points and 13 rebounds. Houston was lucky to come away with the win against Detroit considering they hit only 27 percent of their shots from the free-throw line.

This will be the third meeting of the season between Houston and Dallas. In both prior matchups Dallas defeated Houston and covered the spread.

            Phoenix at New Orleans

The Phoenix Suns are coming off a 103-98 victory over Utah as a 7.5-point favorite on Wednesday. Steve Nash led the Suns with 29 points and 11 assists in the win, while Shawn Marion also recorded a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

The Hornets are in the same boat as the Mavericks, playing their third game in four nights. New Orleans played in Dallas on Friday night and made a stop in Denver on Wednesday where they lost to the Nuggets 105-99 as an 8-point favorite. Chris Paul scored 30 points to go along with 12 assists and David West added 25 points and 16 rebounds in the loss.

This is the first meeting of the season between Phoenix and New Orleans, but in three games last season Phoenix won all three contests while going 2-1 ATS.

            Denver at San Antonio

The Nuggets haven’t taken to the court since Wednesday when they beat New Orleans 105-99 as an 8-point favorite to win their third game in a row. Carmelo Anthony had a hot hand for Denver with 32 points and 10 rebounds, while Allen Iverson netted 22 points and handed out 11 assists.

The Spurs dropped their second straight on Thursday after falling to the Lakers 102-97 as a 6.5-point underdog. San Antonio was severely shorthanded in that game with both Tim Duncan and Tony Parker sitting out with injuries. Without two of their leading scorers, Bruce Bowen led the Spurs with 22 points and Brent Barry had 17 points. Manu Ginobili, who leads the Spurs in scoring this season, was held to only 14 points.

This is the first time San Antonio and Denver have met up since the Spurs knocked off the Nuggets in the opening round of last year’s playoffs. Denver took Game 1 of the best-of-seven series only to have the Spurs storm back and win the next four.

                            Illinois-Chicago at DePaul
Jerry Wainwright's Blue Demons played an emotional game Wednesday night, but squandered an 18-point second half lead en route to a 91-85 loss to Vanderbilt. Now DePaul has to turn around and play an Illinois-Chicago team that has won three of its last four and has a big-time scorer in guard Josh Mayo (18.9 ppg). The Flames look like a good underdog pick (+9) in this one according to Dunkel, which has DePaul favored by just 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Illinois-Chicago (+9). Here are all of today's games.

                              Toronto at Montreal
The Canadiens are mired in their longest home losing streak in more than seven years as they've dropped six straight at Bell Centre. Tonight they have to face Toronto and red-hot goalie Vesa Toskala, who is 6-1-0 in his last seven starts while allowing two goals or less in each of those starts. The Maple Leafs look like a good underdog pick (+135) according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (+135). Here are all of today's games.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL wagers

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens (-150, 6)

The Canadiens have 11 more Stanley Cup banners in their home arena than their rivals from Toronto, but winning at home has not be easy for the Habs recently. Montreal is riding a six-game losing skid at the Bell Centre and has scored two goals or less in five of those defeats.

The Leafs beat the Canadiens 3-2 as +162 underdogs in their only previous trip to Montreal this season and are currently on a roll. Vesa Toskala has started in goal in each of Toronto's last eight contests and the Leafs have cashed in six times during that span.

                                Pick: Maple Leafs +130

Atlanta Thrashers at Ottawa Senators (-240, 6)

The trade that sent Dany Heatley from Atlanta to Ottawa for Marian Hossa was one of the biggest blockbuster trades of 2005 and both players have not disappointed. Each player has excelled with their current team, and played well against their former team.

Heatley has registered 10 points in 10 games against the Thrashers, while Hossa has recorded 16 points in nine games against Ottawa.

The teams have combined for at least six goals in six of 10 meetings since the trade.

                                Pick: over 6

Minnesota Wild at Los Angeles Kings (-105, 5 1/2)

A matchup between the Wild and Kings isn't usually a profitable one for over bettors, but that could change tonight. The over/under is 1-7-2 the last 10 times these teams have met, but in their last meeting, and only game this season, the clubs played over the posted total.

The Kings have had trouble keeping the puck out of their own net lately. They have allowed 18 goals in their last five contests and over bettors have cashed in four times in that span.

                                Pick: over 5 1/2
