      NHL Gameday
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Wednesday NHL Gameday

The high-flying Ilya Kovalchuk and his Atlanta Thrashers will play host to Marc Savard and the Boston Bruins in Wednesday night action. Here is your NHL Gameday . . .

Boston Bruins at Atlanta Thrashers, 7:00pm ET

The Bruins lost three of their first four games in December, but they're now on a two-game winning streak thanks to the goaltending of Alex Auld. The newly-acquired netminder, playing in place of injured Tim Thomas, allowed just one goal on 26 shots in a victory over Toronto on Saturday, and one goal on 45 shots versus Buffalo on Monday.

The Thrashers had a modest two-game winning streak (versus the Islanders and the Rangers) snapped on Saturday in a 6-3 loss to the Capitals. Kari Lehtonen allowed six goals on 27 shots versus Washington in his third game back from injury. Atlanta is square at 14-14-1 on the season, although they've allowed 96 goals in their 29 games.

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals, 7:00pm ET

New York began December with an impressive 5-2 win over the Senators, but they then proceeded to drop three straight decisions to the Hurricanes, Leafs, and Thrashers. However, the Rangers did snap that skid on Sunday with a 1-0 win over the rival Devils. Brendan Shanahan had the OT winner that day, and Henrik Lundqvist made 17 saves.

Washington is still mired in last place in the Southeast Division (at 11-17-2), but they are coming off consecutive wins over the Thrashers and Devils. Mike Green potted two goals for the Capitals in their 6-3 win over Atlanta on Saturday, while Jeff Schultz, Nicklas Backstrom, and Quintin Laing scored in their 3-2 win over the Devils on Monday.

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30pm ET

Los Angeles lost three in a row at the beginning of this month, but they have managed to win two of three contests since then. The Kings destroyed the Sabres 8-2 last Thursday night, fell 4-2 to rival Phoenix on Saturday, and doubled up Vancouver 4-2 on Monday. Dustin Brown and Derek Armstrong each had two points against the Canucks.

The Blackhawks have fallen on hard times in December - four games, four losses (to the Blues, Canucks, Ducks, and Flames). Against Calgary on Sunday Hawks netminder Nikolai Khabibulin gave up three goals on 29 shots, while Robert Lang had a goal and an assist. Chicago has dropped into the basement of the Central Division at just 14-13-2.

Vancouver Canucks at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00pm ET

Vancouver followed up last week's two-game winning streak with two straight losses on Saturday (in OT to the Penguins) and Monday (to the Kings). Taylor Pyatt and Alexander Edler had the goals for the Canucks in their loss to Los Angeles, while Curtis Sanford gave up four goals on 31 shots. The Canucks are 16-11-3 so far on the season.

The Ducks are waiting for Scott Niedermayer to return to the ice, but in the meantime they've won three of their past four games. Anaheim is coming off a 4-3 road OT win over the Blue Jackets on Monday. Chris Pronger has the game-winning goal in that extended contest, Ryan Getzlaf had two assists, and J-S Giguere saved 32 of 35 shots.

          SUPER SUB

Larry Hughes came off the bench and scored a season-high 36 points in just 26 minutes, and Cleveland snapped a six-game losing streak with a 118-105 victory over Indiana on Tuesday night. Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL wagers

Vancouver Canucks at Anaheim Ducks (-160, 5)

Even with Canucks’ star goaltender Roberto Luongo listed as questionable, oddsmakers have set a 5-point total on tonight’s game against Anaheim. Vancouver is a completely different team when Luongo isn’t between the pipes and it usually means more goals by opposing teams. The Ducks have won three of their last four games and have averaged over four goals per game in the victories.

            Pick: over five

Ottawa Senators at Carolina Hurricanes (+105, 6)

The Sens look like they have finally snapped out of an ugly drought that resulted in seven straight losses. Ottawa broke out of the slump by reeling off back-to-back victories against the Panthers and Stars last week. The Senators should be well rested when they face the Canes tonight after coming off a five-day break between games. Although Carolina has won the only meeting between these two teams his season, Ottawa has won five of the last seven head-to-head matchups.

            Pick: Senators -125

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-170, 6)

Despite dropping four in a row and six of their last seven games, the Hawks are still significant favorites against the Kings tonight. Los Angeles has won two of its last three and has its offense firing on all cylinders lately, scoring 14 goals during the three-game stretch. Chicago on the other hand has 13 goals during their current four-game losing streak.

            Pick: Kings +150

Philadelphia's Joffrey Lupul had a hat trick and three assists in an 8-2 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night to record the first six-point game for a Flyer since Eric Lindros on March 1, 1997, against Toronto. R.J. Umberger also scored three times and the Flyers had two players with a hat trick in the same game for the first time since Tim Kerr and Dave Poulin against the Islanders on Dec. 18, 1986.

Philadelphia ended a five-game home losing streak with an 8-2 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. The loss ended Pittsburgh's four-game win streak. ... St. Louis' six-game home winning streak ended with a 5-4 shootout loss to Edmonton.

              RETURN

Calgary's 2-1 shootout win over Florida on Tuesday night marked the return of Mike Keenan to South Florida. Keenan coached the Panthers for two-plus seasons from 2001-02 until being fired in December of 2003. He served as Florida's general manager in 2005-06.

              SLUMPING

Montreal lost 3-2 to Tampa Bay in a shootout Tuesday night and has lost six straight at home. The Canadiens have lost six of eight overall (2-4-2).

              STRONG IN DEFEAT

Doug Weight had two goals and an assist in St. Louis' 5-4 loss to Edmonton.

              SPEAKING

''Are we talking about the same team that got five guys suspended this year? Is that the same team?'' - Pittsburgh coach Michael Therrien after the Penguins and Flyers combined for 156 penalty minutes in Philadelphia's 8-2 win Tuesday night.

                  Ohio at Maryland
It hasn't been the kind of start for the Terps that Gary Williams hoped for. Maryland already has four losses on the season (6-4) and is coming off a tough 81-78 defeat at home against Boston College. The sight of a MAC team by comparison might look pretty good, but Ohio is no pushover. Led by senior forward Leon Williams (17.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg), the Bobcats have won five of their first seven with the only two losses coming by a total of four points against Temple and Holy Cross. Maryland should have some trouble covering the line (-8 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Terps favored by only 4 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Ohio (+8 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                    NY Rangers at Washington
A coaching shakeup has helped the Caps snap out of their season-long funk as Washington is 5-3-1 since Bruce Boudreau took over for Glen Hanlon. The Caps are a perfect 3-0 on their current homestand, including a 3-2 win over division-leading New Jersey on Monday. New York, meanwhile, has dropped three of its last four and has totaled only five goals during the stretch. Washington looks like a good home underdog pick (+100) according to Dunkel, which has the Caps favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+100). Here are all of today's games.
