    Six-pack for Wednesday

    My six favorite football helmets

    6) Bengals—Tiger stripes on the helmet are very cool, huge improvement from original helmets, which just had BENGALS on side of helmet.

    5) Clemson- Big fan of the tiger paw, which Ohio U used for a little while, also.

    4) Richmond—Dark blue helmet with red spider with white trim on it; excellent helmets.

    3) Chargers—White helmet with gold lightning bolt; in the 60’s, they had the uniform number under the bolt, but even without the number, this is an outstanding helmet.

    2) Iowa Barnstormers, Arena League— They had goggles painted on the gold helmets, for Pete’s sake, just like the old time fighter pilots. The fact that two-time MVP Kurt Warner played for Iowa doesn’t hurt this choice any.

    1) Rams—Became Ram fan back in ’66, watching LA Ram-Packer game from LA Coliseum; just liked the way those helmets looked on a black/white TV, and yes, that ages me.

Our List of 13: Random thoughts on an icy Wednesday

      13) Joe Namath is graduating from Alabama this weekend, over 40 years after he finished playing football for Crimson Tide. Good for him.

      12) Ravens were +17 in turnover ratio when they finished 13-3 LY; now, at 4-9, they’re -16 in turnover ratio, and that’s no coincidence. Wonder if they'll have another new QB in '08.

      11) Chargers host Detroit this week without Merriman, Neal, two of their most important guys; if they’re going to make any noise in January, they’ll need those two healthy.

      10) With Rex Grossman hurt, Bears are turning to Kyle Orton to make his first start of season; Orton did well as a starter couple of years back, going 10-4, but Metrodome will be loud Monday night, with the Vikings a red-hot team.

      9) Nationals signed Paul LoDuca to be their catcher, which basically makes the Milledge for Church/Schneider deal a four-player trade. Not sure who gets the best of it.

      8) BYU is not only playing in Las Vegas Bowl for third year in row, they’re playing a team they lost to 27-13 back on Sept. 8. , These two teams also play next September, but UCLA will have had different coach for all three games, with an interim coach working this bowl game in place of the fired Dorrell.

      7) Seeing as Mormons don’t like gambling or drinking, what exactly do they do in Vegas?

      6) Switching from Mormons to morons, Knicks are over the luxury tax threshold by $19,790,373, which guarantees their spot as the worst-run pro sports franchise in America. Again.

      5) Philly’s loss to the Giants Sunday was first December game Donovan McNabb played in since 2004.

      4) Why would a junior college QB, who has two years of college eligibility left, sign with Dave Wannstedt and Pitt Panthers, who started a freshman QB most of this season? It makes no sense, unless it was the only scholarship offer he got, but if Pitt wanted him, chances are it wasn’t.

      3) Les Miles/Michigan are still talking; the lack of other big names mentioned going to Ann Arbor signals that Miles is probably still their choice. If Miles bolts for Michigan, folks in Cajun Country aren’t going to be very happy.

      2) Everyone’s self-promoting these days. Sentencing Michael Vick on same day Falcons had a nationally televised Monday night game was grandstanding by prosecutors who worked out his plea deal. Don't tell me it was a coincidence.

District Attorney is an elected position, so they used MNF as a 3-hour commercial to hammer home how well they nailed a celebrity. .

      1) If Al Davis is still running the Raiders in the summer of ’09, Michael Vick will be playing for Oakland.

            National Football League – mismatches

            NFL

            Thursday, December 13

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NFL mismatches: Where to find the edge in Thursday’s game
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three key mismatches in Broncos-Texans game

            Denver Broncos at Houston Texans (- 1 1/2, 47)

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall vs. Texans’ secondary

Brandon Marshall is developing into one of the best receivers in the NFL. The second-year Broncos star has looked unstoppable recently and should punish the Texans’ secondary this week.

Marshall has 279 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his last three games and has become quarterback Jay Cutler’s favorite target. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Marshall is dominant in the air, but also has the power and speed to rip through defenses on the run.

The 22-year-old ranks eighth in the league among receivers with 1,029 yards and six TDs.

The Texans have given up 767 yards in the air and four receiving TDs in their last three contests, two of which were losses.

Texans defensive end Mario Williams vs. Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler

Mario Williams is playing so well that his teammates believe he is a lock to make the Pro Bowl. The defensive end, who has 9.5 sacks this season, can further strengthen his case for the honor with a big performance against Denver and Jay Cutler.

The second-year pro has recorded at least one sack in four straight games and ranks ninth overall in the league. Of all the players with four or more sacks, Williams is the only one who also has at least 40 tackles.

He’ll be licking his chops at Thursday’s opposition. The Broncos have allowed their quarterback to be sacked at least once each game this season, for a total of 23 times in 13 contests.

Broncos’ turnovers gained vs. Texans’ turnovers lost

If the Texans learned to take care of the football they would have a much better record than their current 6-7. They are the NFL’s worst offenders for turning over the ball, a weakness the Broncos will be eager to expose.

Houston has given away 31 turnovers this season –16 intercepted passes and 15 fumbles.

Denver, meanwhile, has forced opponents to cough up the ball on 22 occasions, 11 of those interceptions. Cornerback Dre Bly leads the way with 4 INTs this season. He could make life difficult for Houston’s backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who is expected to start in place of the injured Matt Schaub.

Cincinnati vs. Southern Miss (ESPN2 | 1 PM ET)

Tale of two coaches here as Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly is on the hot list for every major job in the country after turning the Bearcats into a Top 25 team while Southern Miss’ Jeff Bower resigned and will be coaching his last game for the Golden Eagles.
Cincinnati is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games.

New Mexico Bowl - Albuquerque, NM
                    New Mexico vs. Nevada
                    (ESPN | 4:30 PM ET)

This is essentially a home game for the Lobos, who were 5-1 SU in Albuquerque this year but only 2-3 ATS. In fact, New Mexico is just 6-13 ATS in its last 19 home games.
Nevada freshman QB Colin Kaepernick was 4-3 as a starter this season, but 3 of those losses were decided by a combined 7 points. The Wolfpack covered 2 of those 3 losses but dropped 5 of 6 ATS overall to end the season.
Nevada is 15-5 ATS in its last 20 games on grass.

The Broncos return to Hawaii for the second time in a month after losing to the Warriors 39-27 back on November 23 rd.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Boise State’s last 10 non-conference games.

Motor City Bowl - Detroit, MI
                    Purdue vs. Central Michigan
                    (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

Insiders believe this is a classic power conference vs. mid-major “mismatch” where the public will likely assume the bigger, more physical Boilermakers will push the Chippewas around. However, Purdue dropped 3 straight to close out the regular season following a 5-0 start and finished a disappointing 3-5 in Big Ten play. Central Michigan won 4 of 5 before winning the MAC title game.
Central Michigan is 3-9-1 ATS in its last 13 games vs. Big Ten opponents.

                    MONDAY, DECEMBER 31ST

Bell Helicoptor Armed Forces Bowl - Fort Worth, TX
                    Air Force vs. California
                    (ESPN | 12:30 PM ET)

While Air Force has won six of its last seven games, the game they lost, 34-31 to New Mexico, was the only team of the bunch to finish the season with a winning record. Going back even farther, the last win Air Force had over a winning team was on September 13th, when they beat Texas Christian, 20-17.
Although the Bears have lost five of their last six games, it gives the team a chance to finish on an up note, and begin laying the foundation for next season. The game also marks a homecoming for the two Golden Bears from the Dallas area, Justin Forsett and Brock Mansion.
Motivation could again be a huge factor, as Cal lost $10 in slipping from Rose Bowl to Holiday Bowl and got blown out 45-31 by Texas Tech as an 11-point favorite back in 2004.
Cal is 2-12 ATS in its last 14 games on grass.
The OVER is 13-6 in Air Force’s last 19 games as an underdog.

Sun Bowl - El Paso, TX
                    South Florida vs. Oregon

South Florida is 14-6 ATS in its last 20 games overall.

Auburn is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
Clemson is 3-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The UNDER is 15-5 in Auburn’s last 20 games as an underdog.

                    (ABC | 1 PM ET)

The OVER is 8-1 in Michigan’s last 9 Bowl games.
The UNDER is 9-4 in Florida’s last 13 non-conference games.

                    Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA
                    USC vs. Illinois
                    (ABC | 4:30 PM ET)

Insiders believe no team will benefit more from the extra time off than the Trojans, who were also beat up at the end of last season before beating Michigan 32-18 in the Rose Bowl. Injuries ultimately hurt USC’s shot at the national championship, as both of the team’s losses happened with backup QB Mark Sanchez under center. Many considered the Trojans the most dangerous team in the country at the end of the season with the early losses costing them a BCS spot.
Illinois is 3-11 ATS in its last 14 games on grass.
Illinois is 10-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Illinois’ last 11 games on grass.
The UNDER is 16-5 in USC’s last 21 games overall.

Allstate Sugar Bowl - New Orleans, LA
                    Hawaii vs. Georgia
                    (FOX | 8:30 PM ET)

Oddsmakers opened Hawaii at +8 in this game after Boise State’s stunning win over Oklahoma last year in the Fiesta Bowl, but the public quickly bet this number up to 11 points in favor of Georgia. Many still believe Hawaii’s schedule that produced an unbeaten season was too soft and lacked a legitimate power conference opponent like the Bulldogs.
Georgia likely won’t be overconfident in this game after underestimating West Virginia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs were blown out by the Mountaineers in the first half before a furious rally came up short. They realize this is a statement game for them, which could lead to a preseason #1 ranking next year with an impressive victory.
Two very different offenses will take the field in New Orleans, as Georgia would love to control the clock with a power running game while Hawaii looks to light up the scoreboard with a pass-happy attack led by Heisman Trophy contender Colt Brennan. Some insiders think the Bulldogs will get a major test defensively since the closest thing to Hawaii’s offense in the SEC is Kentucky.
Hawaii is 17-6 ATS in its last 23 games on turf.
Hawaii is 7-18 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The OVER is 23-9-1 in Hawaii’s last 33 games on turf.

                    WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2ND

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl - Glendale, AZ
                    Oklahoma vs. West Virginia
                    (FOX | 8 PM ET)

Oklahoma played in this game a year ago and saw an underrated Boise State team pull off a shocking upset. The Sooners have had to listen to how they “let themselves get beat” by the Broncos every day since then and just got done beating a Missouri team that said “they beat themselves” in the first meeting. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops takes revenge very seriously, so you can bet he will have his team fired up for an explosive West Virginia team with a similar run-oriented attack as Boise.
West Virginia is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games on grass.
West Virginia is 3-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The OVER is 7-1 in Oklahoma’s last 8 non-conference games.
The UNDER is 6-1 in Oklahoma’s last 8 Bowl games.
The UNDER is 7-3 in West Virginia’s last 10 games overall.

Kansas is 19-7 ATS in its last 26 games overall.
The OVER is 6-2 in Kansas’ last 8 games as an underdog.

                    Rutgers vs. Ball State
                    (ESPN2 | 12 PM ET)

The UNDER is 9-4 in Bowling Green’s last 13 games on grass.
The OVER is 9-4 in Bowling Green’s last 13 non-conference games.

                    MONDAY, JANUARY 7TH

BCS National Championship - New Orleans, LA
                    Ohio State vs. Louisiana State
                    (FOX | 8 PM ET)

Last year, the extended time off (51 days) between games really cooled off the previously unbeaten Buckeyes, and insiders feel that same problem will recur against the SEC’s best team. The Tigers have the most NFL talent on their roster and will be able to make good use of the break to heal their wounds, just like USC did in last year’s Rose Bowl. That’s bad news for the Buckeyes and could very well lead to another ugly title game.
Ohio State is 6-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Ohio State is 23-8 ATS in its last 31 games overall.
LSU is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games on turf.
LSU is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
Underdog is 6-3 SU in BCS title games, winning 4 of last 5.

Pick ‘n’ roll: Wednesday’s best NBA bets

Dallas Mavericks at Toronto Raptors (tba)

Chris Bosh led the Raptors to a 93-80 victory over the Rockets on Sunday. It was his first game since he strained his groin in a Nov. 28 victory versus the Grizzlies.

Bosh filled up the stats sheet against Houston, amassing 21 points and 10 rebounds. He also added two steals and four blocks.

Toronto covered the spread in its last meeting with the Mavs on Nov. 20 when Bosh tallied 31 points and 12 rebounds. It has also covered the spread in four of its last five tilts with the Mavericks, dating back to November 2005.

                        Pick: Raptors

Minnesota Timberwolves at Philadelphia 76ers (tba)

                        Don’t write off the Timberwolves.

Minnesota toppled the second-place Suns 100-93 on Saturday.

Timberwolves leading scorer Al Jefferson scored 32 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the upset. Craig Smith chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Big A L is averaging more than 20 points and 11 rebounds this season. He is also shooting a remarkable 49 percent from the field.

Minnesota has covered the spread in its last three trips to the City of Brotherly Love, going back to December 2004.

                        Pick: Timberwolves

Los Angeles Clippers at Charlotte Bobcats (tba)

The Bobcats have lost eight of their last 10 outings. The team’s last two victories, though, came in North Carolina.

Charlotte is 6-5 against the spread (ATS) and straight up (SU) in the Tar Heel state. It has also covered four of its five all-time meetings with the Clippers.

L.A. is a meager 3-13 ATS in its last 16 outings. It is also 0-7 ATS in its last seven versus the Eastern Conference.

                        Pick: Bobcats

Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers (tba)

The Bulls are starting to charge.

Chicago has won four of its last six, including back-to-back road victories over the Bobcats and Pistons. It is also an impressive 4-2 ATS in that span.

The Bulls are averaging more than 94 points in their last six outings, which is five points above their season average.

They are also a stellar 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings with the Pacers dating back to 2005.

                        Pick: Bulls

Sacramento Kings at Boston Celtics (tba)

Boston may be the toughest place in the NBA for opposing teams to play.

The Celtics are undefeated at TD Banknorth Garden, outscoring opponents by an average of 22 points.

They outlasted the Bulls 92-81 on Saturday and had five players score in double figures, including a game-high 21 points from Ray Allen.

The Celtics are also 8-2 ATS in their last 10 in New England.

                        Pick: Celtics

Seattle SuperSonics at New York Knicks (tba)

New York should continue its downward spiral on Wednesday.

The Knicks have lost two straight at Madison Square Garden, including Saturday’s setback to the rebuilding 76ers.

New York will also be without point guard Stephon Marbury, who is still dealing with the sudden death of his father earlier this month.

Knicks coach Isaiah Thomas may not be as focused on the Sonics as he should be. On Monday, Thomas and MSG settled the sexual harassment case brought by former team executive Browne Saunders. The $11.6 million deal brought the ugly story back into the media spotlight.

Seattle is 4-1 ATS in its last five contests.

                        Pick: Sonics

Orlando Magic at Milwaukee Bucks (tba)

Orlando should put an end to its two-game losing streak Wednesday.

The Magic embarrassed the Bucks 102-83 on Oct. 31. Orlando star Dwight Howard tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds in that game. He also had a season-high seven blocks. Rashard Lewis added 26 points and six rebounds.

Milwaukee could also be without reserve Bobby Simmons, who has missed the Bucks’ last three contests due to personal reasons. Simmons is averaging more than seven points in 25 minutes per night.

                        Pick: Magic

Detroit Pistons at Houston Rockets (tba)

Detroit has won eight of its last 10, including three straight outside Motown.

The Pistons outscored their last three road opponents an average of 17 points. They are also 4-2 ATS in their last six road games.

Houston, meanwhile, could be without leading scorer Tracy McGrady, who left Monday’s setback in Philadelphia with a sprained ankle. McGrady is averaging more than 24 points and five assists.

                        Pick: Pistons

New Orleans Hornets at Denver Nuggets (tba)

Colorado’s mile-high altitude seems to be giving the Nuggets a boost.

The Nuggets are 9-3 at the Pepsi Center compared to 4-5 on the road. They have also covered the spread in seven of their 12 meetings in the Rockies.

Denver has also won four of its last five and is 3-2 ATS in the span. The Hornets, meanwhile, are 3-7 ATS in their last 10.

                        Pick: Nuggets

Golden State Warriors at Portland Trail Blazers (tba)

Portland leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge will miss at least one week as a result of planter fasciitis in his right foot, a severe pain in the arch caused by overexertion. Aldridge is averaging more than 18 points and is leading the Blazers in rebounds (7.7) and blocks (1.2) this season.

The Blazers have covered the spread twice in their last six outings. They have also covered just once in their last eight meetings with the high-scoring Warriors.

Golden State is 6-1 ATS in its last seven against Western Conference opponents.

                        Pick: Warriors

Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns (tba)

The Suns haven’t been shining in Arizona.

Phoenix has lost two of its last three at home, including Monday’s loss to the Heat. It also lost to the Timberwolves, 100-93, on Saturday.

The Suns, allowing opponents to average more than 105 points on a lofty 46 percent shooting, could be in trouble again on Wednesday.

Utah is leading the league in field-goal percentage, shooting 50 percent. It is also averaging more than 105 points. It has also covered the spread in four straight trips to the desert dating back to February 2005.

                        Pick: Jazz
