    Six-pack for Monday

-- Rangers got suckered into signing Milton Bradley to a contract this weekend; they'll regret signing the volatile, yet somewhat talented outfielder. Everyone else has.

-- There is D-III hoop team in Iowa called Grinnell that uses a style like LMU did when Paul Westhead was coach; this weekend, a Grinnell player had 34 assists in one game, as the Pioneers defeated North Central, 151-112.

-- Whats troublesome about this is that the kid plays for his dad; not fond of seeing teams try to set records for kid who is already playing for his father, but still, he had eight more assists than anyone has ever had in a game before.

-- By the way, Mavericks' coach Avery Johnson shares the D-I assist record, with 22 in one game, at Southern.

-- Congrats to friend Ron Daly on setting a world record in 198-pound weightlifting class, with a 600-lb bench press.

-- Myself, I have trouble lifting anything heavier than 20-oz bottle of Dr Pepper, but Ron is worldclass weightlifter, who also owns MuscleWorks gym in South Glens Falls. Good place to go workout and get some expert training.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday...........

      13) One of big things I miss about not having NFL Network this season is their Sunday night highlights show, which, for some unknown reason, actually shows highlights of all the games, not just the Patriots and the Cowboys, who ESPN are obsessed with. I like seeing highlights of every game.

      12) The other thing miss is the super Monday show, with the great Jim Mora Sr on, talking in between cut-ins to various coaches' press conferences around country. Terrific show.

      11) There are a few NFL teams that are completely shot right now, and can never be picked, not even in an office pool; the 49ers, Panthers, Dolphins, maybe the Ravens, off of a pair of nationally televised primetime games.

      10) If I was Wade Phillips, I'd fear the Minnesota Vikings, a good defensive team that can run the ball. Cowboys already beat Vikings once, but this is an improving team.

      9) Vikings jumped up into the #6 slot in NFC Sunday; they'll be a tough out for someone in January.

      8) Lions laid out blueplan for beating Dallas; be very physical in the running game, put them back on their heels, keep ball out of Owens' hands. Cowboys were lucky to win this game.

      7) If I was Robert Kraft or owned the Patriots, I'd be asking, in no uncertain terms, why Tom Brady was passing with 1:55 to go in 34-13 game? Why take a chance on him getting hurt? It seems Coach Belichick might like his position of being an Evil Genius of the NFL- it might help focus the squad.

      6) Tremendous comeback by Norvelous Norv's Chargers, an OT winner, after they trailed 17-3 in 4th quarter at Tennessee. Very damaging loss for the Titans; both starting QBs left in this game with injuries, but Rivers returned to save the day.

      5) Total yardage in Denver-KC game: 453-129. About time the disappointing Broncos showed some spunk. Now Chiefs are in danger of being labeled a team on the skids.

      4) 34 of the 40 points scored in San Diego-Tennessee contest came on drives that started in enemy territory. Both QBs got hurt, so for while, you had an epic Volek-Collins matchup.

      3) I thought Brock Berlin did OK in his first game, when you think about how first half was played in downpour- thought he looked competent after the rain stopped. Rams could be one of those teams that bounces back next year.

      2) Houston won 20 of 30 third down plays in beating Bucs; if you control third down, you create short fields for an offense to navigate, and long fields for the opponents. Bucs started six drives Sunday 80+ yards from the goal post.

      1) When was last time Jason Hansen missed a 35-yarder in a dome? Big miss, big loss for suddenly-sinking Lions.

Saints won first meeting 22-15 in Week 7 (-9), outscoring Atlanta 15-3 in second half. Last week, Saints gave up winning TD with 0:14 left, after a botched reverse with 3:30 left, when Saints had ball near midfield leading 23-20, bad loss for the coach to stomach. NO actually won three of last four road games; their win vs Falcons is only one of their five wins that was by less than 11 points. New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons (ESPN | 8:30 PM ET)

New Orleans will be without leading rusher Reggie Bush, who has a partially torn knee ligament that could keep him out for the rest of the season. That means veteran RB Aaron Stecker could get the start with Jamaal Branch and Pierre Thomas also possibly seeing time. EDGE: FALCONS
Atlanta will likely start its third different QB, as Chris Redman is expected to get the nod. Redman gave the team a spark in the third quarter of last week's loss at St. Louis, completing 16-of-24 passes for 172 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Redman had been out of football from 2002-04 prior to this year but played for Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino at Louisville and is very familiar with the offense. "He came in and he was calm and he understands what we are doing," Atlanta RB Warrick Dunn said. "He seems to fit well. He is still learning but I thought he executed well and came in and made some big throws with poise." EDGE: FALCONS
The Falcons have dropped 3 straight games for the third time this season. The previous two times they lost 3 in a row, they ended the skid with a victory at home. EDGE: FALCONS
Saints are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games.
Saints are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games vs. teams with a losing record.
Falcons are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Atlanta's last 10 games vs. NFC South.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 7-1 in Atlanta's last 8 games as a home underdog.
The OVER is 8-3 in New Orleans' last 11 vs. NFC opponents.

                  Monday, December 10

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons – over 43 ½

Bettors don’t have to do much digging to find out why the club many picked to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl is 5-7. New Orleans’ defense is as leaky as a cheap coffee filter. The unit has surrendered the second-most number of plays of 20 yards or more (42) and the most over 40 yards (12).

The Falcons will find the end zone several times thanks to that deficiency. Look for Atlanta’s Roddy White to be the main beneficiary. The third-year wideout is enjoying a breakout year and should be able to get the better of New Orleans’ secondary.

                  Last week’s record: 1-2

                  Season record: 22-17

                    NFL Preview
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Monday Night Football Preview

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints will be looking to get closer to the .500 mark when they head to the Georgia Dome for their Monday night matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.

Brees and company saw their playoff chances take a hit last week when they fell 27-23 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home. That loss dropped New Orleans to 5-7 straight-up on the year, and it put them three games behind the Buccaneers in the NFC South.

The Saints couldn't get much going on offense against Tampa Bay. Brees went 17-of-23 for just 179 yards passing, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Terrance Copper and Devery Henderson each had TD catches in the loss, while Mike McKenzie ran back an INT for a score. Marques Colston had two catches for 39 yards on the day.

Reggie Bush ran for 64 yards on 13 carries against Tampa Bay, but he won't be able to duplicate those modest numbers against Atlanta on Monday night. Bush has been declared OUT for the primetime matchup, and his knee injury could keep him out of action for the rest of the season. We should know more about his status early this week.

The Falcons have now lost three games in a row, as they fell 28-16 on the road to the Rams on the weekend. That puts Atlanta at just 3-9 on the season, and they're in last place in the NFC South. The Falcons are also 1-3 against divisional opponents this year.

Joey Harrington went just 17-of-34 for 184 yards passing against St. Louis, with no touchdowns and one interception. Chris Redman fared better during his time on the field, completing 16-of-24 pass attempts for 172 yards, with two TDs and one INT. Redman will get the nod as Atlanta's starter when they host New Orleans on Monday.

Roddy White and Michael Jenkins had the TD catches for Atlanta in Week 13, and both of them came in the fourth quarter. White led the receiving corps with 10 catches for 146 yards and the score, while Alge Crumpler had seven catches for 65 yards. Warrick Dunn was ineffective on the ground, rushing for only 17 yards on 10 carries. Jerious Norwood, though, ran for 94 yards on eight attempts, for an average of 11.8 per carry.

The Falcons are pegged as the home underdog on Monday night, as New Orleans is favored by 3.5 points on the road. On the season the Saints are 4-8 against-the-spread, while the Falcons are a bit better at 6-6 ATS. New Orleans is also 3-3 ATS on the road and 3-6 ATS as the favorite. Atlanta is 2-4 ATS at home and 5-6 ATS as the underdog.

Monday night's total has been pegged at 42.5 points. The Saints and Falcons are a combined 11-13 on the OVER/UNDER this season, with New Orleans square at 6-6.

The Saints got past the Falcons 22-16 earlier this season at the Superdome. New Orleans had been favored by 7.5 points at home in that contest, and failed to cover the spread. The combined score fell UNDER the posted total of 42.5 points. Brees threw for 219 yards and two scores in the win, while Harrington and Byron Leftwich split the QB duties for Atlanta. White had a big day for the Falcons with eight catches for 110 yards.

New Orleans also went 2-0 versus Atlanta back in 2006, and they managed to pick up ATS victories in both of those contests as well. The Falcons last beat their division rival back on December 12, 2005, when they covered a 10-point spread in a 36-17 victory.

Here are the official injury reports for both New Orleans and Atlanta for Monday . . .

                    New Orleans Injuries
Reggie Bush RB Out Week 14 (knee)
Pierre Thomas RB Probable Week 14 (kidney)

                    Atlanta Injuries
Antoine Harris CB Doubtful Week 14 (knee)
                    Tyson Clabo T Questionable Week 14 (knee/foot)

The Falcons will play another divisional game in Week 15, as they'll head to Tampa Bay to take on the first-place Bucs. The Saints will go back home to next face the Cardinals.

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NFL mismatches: Where to find the edge in Monday’s game
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three key mismatches in Saints-Falcons game

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons (+3 ½, 43 ½)

Falcons receiver Roddy White vs. Saints’ secondary

Considering the Falcons have used three different starting quarterbacks this season, it’s a credit to receiver Roddy White that he’s putting up the best numbers of his career. He should improve those figures against a much-maligned Saints secondary.

The third-year pro ranks eighth in the league with 920 receiving yards and is averaging an impressive 14.84 yards per carry. White has broken the 100-yard mark in his last two games, and has a team-high four TDs this season.

The Saints’ pass defense, especially the secondary, is largely responsible for their 5-7 record. New Orleans is surrendering 249.5 yards per game in the air, which ranks 28th in the league. The Saints allowed Bucs quarterback Luke McCown to throw for 313 yards and two TDs in last week’s loss.

Saints running backs Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas vs. Falcons’ rush defense

A possible season-ending injury to starting running back Reggie Bush will give two backups a chance to shine in a Monday night game. It could turn out to be a cloud with a silver lining for New Orleans.

Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas will share reps at tailback against the Falcons, and both have shown strong promise in their short careers. As kick returner this season, Thomas has 431 yards on 19 returns. He also has 78 rushing yards and a touchdown in 19 carries.

Stecker has seen limited time behind Bush. But he has still rushed for 200 yards and a TD, averaging a solid 3.4 yards per carry.

The injury to Bush might actually work against a weak Falcons rush defense because he hadn’t looked his best in recent games. Now Atlanta must deal with two eager and talented runners, and the combination could prove difficult to contain.

Falcons’ turnovers gained vs. Saints’ turnovers lost

The Saints are one of the league’s worst offenders when it comes to turnovers, with much of the blame being placed on quarterback Drew Brees. The Falcons are well positioned to take advantage of that weakness.

New Orleans has 23 turnovers this season, with 15 occurring from a Brees interception.

Conversely, Atlanta is adept at forcing opponents into mistakes. The Falcons have 22 takeaways in 11 games – 14 interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall, whose four interceptions rank 12th in the league, could make life particularly difficult.

                      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is essentially a home game for the Lobos, who were 5-1 SU in Albuquerque this year but only 2-3 ATS. In fact, New Mexico is just 6-13 ATS in its last 19 home games.
Nevada freshman QB Colin Kaepernick was 4-3 as a starter this season, but 3 of those losses were decided by a combined 7 points. The Wolfpack covered 2 of those 3 losses but dropped 5 of 6 ATS overall to end the season.
Nevada is 15-5 ATS in its last 20 games on grass.

                              (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

Insiders believe this is a classic power conference vs. mid-major “mismatch” where the public will likely assume the bigger, more physical Boilermakers will push the Chippewas around. However, Purdue dropped 3 straight to close out the regular season following a 5-0 start and finished a disappointing 3-5 in Big Ten play. Central Michigan won 4 of 5 before winning the MAC title game.
Central Michigan is 3-9-1 ATS in its last 13 games vs. Big Ten opponents.
Purdue is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games vs. MAC opponents.

                              (ESPN | 12:30 PM ET)

While Air Force has won six of its last seven games, the game they lost, 34-31 to New Mexico, was the only team of the bunch to finish the season with a winning record. Going back even farther, the last win Air Force had over a winning team was on September 13th, when they beat Texas Christian, 20-17.
Although the Bears have lost five of their last six games, it gives the team a chance to finish on an up note, and begin laying the foundation for next season. The game also marks a homecoming for the two Golden Bears from the Dallas area, Justin Forsett and Brock Mansion.
Motivation could again be a huge factor, as Cal lost $10 in slipping from Rose Bowl to Holiday Bowl and got blown out 45-31 by Texas Tech as an 11-point favorite back in 2004.
Cal is 2-12 ATS in its last 14 games on grass.

                              (ABC | 4:30 PM ET)

Insiders believe no team will benefit more from the extra time off than the Trojans, who were also beat up at the end of last season before beating Michigan 32-18 in the Rose Bowl. Injuries ultimately hurt USC’s shot at the national championship, as both of the team’s losses happened with backup QB Mark Sanchez under center. Many considered the Trojans the most dangerous team in the country at the end of the season with the early losses costing them a BCS spot.
Illinois is 3-11 ATS in its last 14 games on grass.
Illinois is 10-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

Allstate Sugar Bowl - New Orleans, LA
                              Hawaii vs. Georgia
                              (FOX | 8:30 PM ET)

Oddsmakers opened Hawaii at +8 in this game after Boise State’s stunning win over Oklahoma last year in the Fiesta Bowl, but the public quickly bet this number up to 11 points in favor of Georgia. Many still believe Hawaii’s schedule that produced an unbeaten season was too soft and lacked a legitimate power conference opponent like the Bulldogs.
Georgia likely won’t be overconfident in this game after underestimating West Virginia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs were blown out by the Mountaineers in the first half before a furious rally came up short. They realize this is a statement game for them, which could lead to a preseason #1 ranking next year with an impressive victory.
Two very different offenses will take the field in New Orleans, as Georgia would love to control the clock with a power running game while Hawaii looks to light up the scoreboard with a pass-happy attack led by Heisman Trophy contender Colt Brennan. Some insiders think the Bulldogs will get a major test defensively since the closest thing to Hawaii’s offense in the SEC is Kentucky.
Hawaii is 17-6 ATS in its last 23 games on turf.
Hawaii is 7-18 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The OVER is 23-9-1 in Hawaii’s last 33 games on turf.

                              (FOX | 8 PM ET)

Oklahoma played in this game a year ago and saw an underrated Boise State team pull off a shocking upset. The Sooners have had to listen to how they “let themselves get beat” by the Broncos every day since then and just got done beating a Missouri team that said “they beat themselves” in the first meeting. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops takes revenge very seriously, so you can bet he will have his team fired up for an explosive West Virginia team with a similar run-oriented attack as Boise.
West Virginia is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games on grass.
West Virginia is 3-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

BCS National Championship - New Orleans, LA
                              Ohio State vs. Louisiana State
                              (FOX | 8 PM ET)

Last year, the extended time off (51 days) between games really cooled off the previously unbeaten Buckeyes, and insiders feel that same problem will recur against the SEC’s best team. The Tigers have the most NFL talent on their roster and will be able to make good use of the break to heal their wounds, just like USC did in last year’s Rose Bowl. That’s bad news for the Buckeyes and could very well lead to another ugly title game.
Ohio State is 6-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Ohio State is 23-8 ATS in its last 31 games overall.
LSU is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games on turf.
LSU is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
Underdog is 6-3 SU in BCS title games, winning 4 of last 5.
