        NBA
NBA's biggest impact players on the spread

Basketball is one of the rare sports in which one player can make the difference between winning and losing , between covering and paying. Bettors found that out the hard way when New Jersey Nets guard Vince Carter missed five games with a sprained ankle.

The Nets lost every game without the All-Star in the lineup and failed to cover in four of those contests, pushing with the number in the other. Once Carter returned, New Jersey immediately won straight-up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) three straight times. Carter averaged over 15 points during the streak.

He isn't the only game-breaker out there. Every team has their go-to guys but only a few hold a special place with linesmakers. Here are some of the NBA's most valuable players to the pointspread.

        Night and day

Two players hold the most weight with books.

Phoenix Suns point guard and two-time MVP Steve Nash is worth as much as eight points on a line, according to Mike Seba of the Las Vegas Lines Consultants. The Suns are a completely different team when Nash is at the wheel. Since joining Phoenix in 2004-2005, the team is 5-11 ATS when he is out of action.

Kobe Bryant is the other player carrying big value with oddsmakers. The Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard can take over a game at will and is worth between six and eight points to a spread. While the NBA might snub the Mamba of an MVP, books won't argue against Kobe's importance. The Lakers have gone 9-13 ATS when he isn't in the lineup.

        Different address, same value

You'd think that Kevin Garnett would lose some of his clout with books since joining fellow All-Stars Paul Pierce and Ray Allen in Boston. But according to some oddsmakers, K.G. is more valuable than ever.

Garnett's ability to assimilate with his new team helped the Celtics get out of the gate so strongly, says handicapper and lines consultant David Malinsky. "It is a classic case of a great player finally getting a chance to win some games and making the most of it."

Garnett is worth around five points to Celtics spreads. He's averaging almost 21 points and 13 rebounds per game in his first year in Beantown. Some oddsmakers believe that the Celtics could survive injuries to Allen or Pierce, but would be doomed if Garnett were to go down.

        The King and them

Other notable difference-makers include Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade and San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan. All three of these players are worth three to five points on a spread, depending on the matchup.

"Wade has more value than Shaq in Miami," says Korner. "They play a completely different game when he's healthy."

The Heat began this season without Wade, who was still recovering from offseason knee and shoulder surgeries. In that span, books hung dog tags on Miami as large as 11 1/2 points.

Jeff Stoneback, sportsbook manager for the Mirage Hotel and Casino, believes Tim Duncan has lost a bit of his sway on the line simply because the Spurs have such a great supporting cast around him.

        Two times the impact

The league's dynamic duos can persuade bookmakers to move lines dramatically. One-two punches like Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming for the Houston Rockets, or Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony for the Denver Nuggets, stand out as the top tandems.

"The Rockets play two different styles when each one is out," Korner says of T-Mac and Yao, who according to the lines consultant are worth about three points each. "Halfcourt when McGrady is out and run-and-gun when Yao isn't healthy."

Both missed an April 6 meeting with the Portland Trailblazers last season. It was a game in which Houston was an 8 1/2-point favorite, but lost 85-78 after McGrady and Ming were held out as game-time decisions.

The Nuggets' A.I. and Melo hold a bit more value because Denver doesn't have many scoring threats outside these two. According to Seba, Iverson can still cause a spread to move as much as five points. When the fearless guard was in Philadelphia, he was one of the NBA's elite eight-point impact players.

        Who's got next?

There are a couple players on the verge of greatness, which also means they are close to making waves with Vegas types.

The Portland Trail Blazers' Brandon Roy and the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard are earning as much as a three-point swing to their teams' spreads.

"I think Roy is going to be that kind of player in Portland," says Malinsky. "There has been a major difference in the way that they have played with him in, and out, so far in his career. He is not just a solid individual talent, but also a good glue guy for the rest of the team."

Howard is making a push for regular season MVP honors, leading Orlando to the league's best start at 13-3 SU and ATS. The big man is averaging more than 22 points and 14 boards a game.

        Lost that loving feeling

Some players' value to the line declines over time. The two most notable are the O'Neals ? Jermaine and Shaquille.

Shaq is getting older by the game and no longer can carry an entire team on his wide back. He's averaging just under 17 point and eight rebounds and has dropped from a six- or five-point impact to a two-point swing on a spread.

Jermaine O'Neal, no relation to the former MVP, isn't getting it done in Indiana this season. But when the slender center missed three games with a bum knee, the Pacers went 2-1 against the number improving on their dismal 5-9 ATS record.

One surprise on this list is reigning MVP Dirk Nowitzki, who was crowned as one of the players with a declining impact on the spread. The sharp-shooting German is averaging 21.4 points this season. While his level of production is consistent, it's the Dallas Mavericks' strategy that is hurting his worth to bettors.

"It's not so much because he is falling off in any way, but because the Mavericks are trying to get more out of other players," says Malinsky. "Avery Johnson knows that it will be critical come playoff time for others to step their games up and that is becoming a priority during the regular season already."

                      Hot Lines

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets

                      Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks (+6 1/2, 186 1/2)

The Pistons have been unstoppable since a 103-93 loss on Nov. 25 to the Jazz.

Detroit has won three straight by an average margin of 24 points. That includes Saturday's 117-91 win in Milwaukee. The Pistons have also tallied more than 100 points in each of their last three contests and are 7-0 straight up (SU) and 5-2 against the spread (ATS) when topping the 100-point plateau.

                      Pick: Pistons -6 1/2

New Jersey Nets at Cleveland Cavaliers (-3 1/2, 189)

LeBron James could be in the Cavaliers' lineup tonight.

James practiced Monday for the first time since spraining his finger in last week's 35-point setback to the Pistons. James leads the league in scoring with more than 30 points and is his team's leader in assists (8.1) and steals (1.9).

King James also led the Cavs to a home win over the conference-leading Celtics last Tuesday.

                      Pick: Cavaliers

Phoenix Suns at Indiana Pacers (+6, 220)

The Suns burned Indiana in their most recent meetings.

Phoenix has covered the spread in its last two contests in Indianapolis, going back to last season. It is also 4-0 SU and ATS in its last four meetings with the Pacers, winning by an average of 16 points.

Suns star Steve Nash has also averaged more than 23 points and 10 assists in his last four tilts with the Pacers.

                      Pick: Suns -6

Los Angeles Lakers at Minnesota Timberwolves (+8, 204 1/2)

The Timberwolves are a meager 2-6 ATS at the Target Center.

Minnesota has lost five straight at home, failing to cover the spread since a Nov. 14 victory over the Kings. The Timberwolves have also tallied fewer than 90 points in each of their last five contests in Minneapolis, which is four points fewer than their season average.

The Wolves are 2-15 ATS in their last 17 games as a home underdog.

                      Pick: Lakers -8

Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings (+4, 207)

Home is where the heart is. It rings especially true for the Kings.

Sacramento is a remarkable 8-1 ATS at Arco Arena compared to a lackluster 1-6 record against the number on the road. It is also 4-1 ATS in its last five home contests against the Jazz.

The Kings defeated the defending champion Spurs at Arco last Monday, covering the spread as a 6 1/2-point underdog.

                      Pick: Kings

Milwaukee Bucks at Los Angeles Clippers (-2, 193 1/2)

Milwaukee is mired in a four-game losing streak.

The Bucks lost their last two road outings by a combined 19 points. They were also beaten by an average of 15 points in their last four contests.

Milwaukee is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 meetings with the Clippers. It is also just 1-6 outside Wisconsin.

                      Pick: Clippers -2
