    Six-pack for Monday

-- What a weekend; lot of football, hoops; tough weekend on the eyeballs, but good action for several days.

-- NC State edged Villanova 69-68 in finals of tournament at Disney World, making two foul shots with 0:00.4 left.

-- Saskatchewan Roughriders won Grey Cup 24-19 over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Toronto, winning the football championship of Canada.

-- Arizona got hosed by refs at Kansas Sunday night; two critical calls late in regulation when against the Wildcats, and Jayhawks wound up winning 76-72 in overtime.

-- It is surprising that no media has intruded on Lute Olson and his leave of absence; considering the guy is in his 70s, and it isn't medical and it isn't basketball-related, then it will be interesting to find out what is the reason he isn't there.

-- Southern Illinois-USC played in final of Anaheim Classic late Sunday night, with Trojans winning easily, 70-45.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday...........

      13) What in the name of Gale Sayers were Broncos thinking in kicking/punting the ball to Devin Hester? Considering he ran two back for TDs, and Bears also blocked a punt, must have been long ride home to Colorado for coach Shanahan and his special teams coach.

      12) If I ran the Bengals, it would be tough to stomach Chad Johnson, who is so stuck on himself he doesn't care if they call a 15-yard penalty on him every time he scores a TD. He is a very talented player, but his team is 4-7, and if he cares, he sure as hell doesn't show it by drawing extra penalties.

      11) Derek Anderson won't win any awards after the season, but he should get something (he won't even get in Pro Bowl, with Manning-Brady-Palmer in AFC). He has led Browns to an amazing season, which may end up in the playoffs.

      10) Eli Manning threw three INTs for Minnesota TDs, in one of the worst performances ever seen in an NFL game. Peyton Manning was in the house to witness the debacle. Surprised Eli never got taken out of the game; at some point, what good does it do to just keep playing badly on a horrible day?

      9) Baltimore took away Chargers' running game, dared Philip Rivers to beat them passing, so he did; if San Diego makes it into playoffs, they can thank Brian Billick for forcing Rivers to have to perform for the Bolts to win.

      8) By the way, San Diego has only seven takeaways in five road games (-1 TO ratio) but has 22 in six home games. (+12).

      7) Certain coaches (Redskins and U of Utah this weekend) are not going to use their trick plays until they get outside their own 40-yard line. If I'm noticing it, sitting in a bar, it becomes predictable for opponents, I would think. They get between the 40's, poof, here comes the reverses and fleaflickers.

      6) Tarvaris Jackson's first three touchdown passes this year were all exactly 60 yards long, which is a little weird, and also shows that he is a much better deep passer than intermediate or short passer.

      5) WR Ernest Wilford of Jaguars made couple great catches to give underrated Jacksonville first downs against the Bills. Possession receivers like Wilford make a QB look real good, and David Garrard looked good Sunday.

      4) Referees have to stop calling roughing-the-passer for any contact to the QB's head. Chargers' CB blitzed, jumped as the pass was thrown, then got called for penalty when his arm may or not have hit Kyle Boller in the head. Horrible call. Did the ref think CB wasn't going to come down after his jump?

      3) Kurt Warner passed for 485 yards, but turned the ball over four times, which is a recipe for disaster in NFL. The two-time MVP can still really pass, he is a leader, but he holds the ball so damn long, and that is how the turnovers occur.

      2) You watch the Eagles play so well in Foxboro, and couple of questions arise: a) How is this team 5-6? and b) How has AJ Feeley not started an NFL game for three years? Vikings would be NFC contenders if they had Feeley as their QB.

      1) NFL is a billion dollar industry, but games still come down to smallest details; Rams lost as Gus Frerotte fumbled a snap on 4th-down play on 1-yard line on last play of game. Arizona lost after Neil Rackers missed a 27-yard FG in OT. Those two things are executed routinely in high school games.

Dolphins (0-10) @ Steelers (7-3) — Cameron inserted rookie QB Beck as starter at weird time, with games at Philly, Pittsburgh; he was 9-22/109 yards passing last week, in first NFL start. Pitt is just lot better at home (5-0, scoring 30.8 pg, 4-1 as home favorite), a lot better (2-3 on road, scoring 23.2); they did lousy job of protecting Big Ben last week- Jets had seven sacks. Miami is 0-6 away from (2-2-2 as road dog) with losses by 3-3-3-10-3-10 points. In last four games, Fish lost field position battle by 13-20-17-12 yards, really awful numbers. Not sure if Ricky Williams plays here, after being reinstated by NFL; how good shape can he be in? Only three of ten Miami losses are by 17+ points (Dallas, Patriots were two of three). mmmmm

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers (ESPN | 8:30 PM ET)

The Steelers have not lost when hosting their last 12 Monday Night Football games, suffering their last setback in 1991. They are 4-1 ATS at home this season, with their average margin of victory there sitting at nearly 20 points per game. BIG EDGE: STEELERS
Pittsburgh will be without two of its key players on Monday night in leading receiver Santonio Holmes (ankle) and Troy Polamalu (knee). However, the Steelers will be going against the worst running defense in the NFL, allowing 152.2 yards per game. That along with Miami rookie QB John Beck making just his second career start should help minimize these losses but could prevent Pittsburgh from covering such a big number. SLIGHT EDGE: DOLPHINS
This game marks the return of former Steelers LB Joey Porter to Pittsburgh, and he definitely didn't envision playing for a winless team at this point. "I'd do anything for a victory right now," Porter said. "That's where I'm at." Insiders expect Porter to be extra motivated for this game. SLIGHT EDGE: DOLPHINS
Dolphins are 4-12-2 ATS in their last 18 games vs. the AFC.
The OVER is 11-4 in Miami's last 15 Monday Night Football games.
The OVER is 38-13-2 in Pittsburgh's last 53 home games.

                  Monday Night Football Preview

Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be looking to bounce back from a bad loss when they take on the winless Miami Dolphins at Heinz Field on Monday night.

Roethlisberger went just 15-of-25 for 195 yards passing last Sunday as the Steelers fell 19-16 in overtime on the road to the New York Jets. Big Ben threw a touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes in the second quarter, and was intercepted once. Jeff Reed accounted for the rest of Pittsburgh's points in the loss, booting three field goals in the second half.

Holmes had five catches for 75 yards against the Jets, but he'll miss Monday night's game with an ankle injury; Nate Washington will take his spot in the starting lineup. Hines Ward had a pair of catches for 47 yards last week, and Willie Parker was held to just 52 yards rushing on 21 carries. Najeh Davenport rushed eight times for 39 yards.

That defeat dropped Pittsburgh to 7-3 straight-up on the season, and 6-4 against-the-spread. The combined score was an UNDER play; the Steelers are now 5-5 on the OU.

The Dolphins opened the scoring against the Philadelphia Eagles last week with an 87-yard punt return from Ted Ginn Jr., but that was all they got in a 17-7 road loss. John Beck made an ineffective start for Miami in that contest, going 9-of-22 for 109 yards passing, with no touchdowns and no INTs. The rookie will get another shot on Monday.

Jesse Chatman ran for 72 yards on 22 carries versus the Eagles, but he's been limited in practice this week with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision against Pittsburgh. That could open the door for Ricky Williams to start at running back in his return to the league. Zach Thomas is out for the Monday nighter due to his head injury.

Losing to Philadelphia made the Dolphins 0-10 straight-up on the season, and they're only 2-6-2 against-the-spread. Last week's UNDER play put Miami at 5-5 on the totals.

The oddsmakers don't think the Steelers will have much trouble adding to the Dolphins' woes on Monday night - they're listed as 16-point favorites for the contest (with the total pegged at 40.5 points). Pittsburgh is 4-1 against-the-spread at home this season, and 6-4 ATS as the favorite. Miami is 1-2-2 ATS on the road, and 2-5-2 ATS as the underdog.

The last time the Steelers and Dolphins met was in Pittsburgh on September 7, 2006. The Steelers came away with a 28-17 victory in that contest, easily covering the 1.5-point spread. The combined score of the game went OVER the posted total of 34 points.

Here are the official injury reports for both the Dolphins and the Steelers for Monday . . .

                  Miami Injuries
Joe Toledo G P-U-P List (foot)
Zach Thomas LB Out Week 12 (migraine)
Matt Roth DE Doubtful Week 12 (groin)
Jesse Chatman RB Questionable Week 12 (ankle)
Keith Traylor DT Probable Week 12 (ankle)

                  Pittsburgh Injuries
Santonio Holmes WR Out Week 12 (ankle)
Troy Polamalu S Out Week 12 (knee)
LaMarr Woodley LB Questionable Week 12 (hamstring)
Brett Keisel DE Probable Week 12 (shoulder)
Deshea Townsend CB Probable Week 12 (ankle)

After playing the Steelers on the road on Monday night the Dolphins will return home for Week 13 to take on the division-rival New York Jets. The Steelers will remain in Pittsburgh for their Week 13 game, which will see the Cincinnati Bengals come to town.

Total bias: Week 12 top over/under play

Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers over 41

The Fish may be forced to put Ricky Williams back in action earlier than planned because of Jesse Chatman's sore ankle. This will be rookie quarterback John Beck's second start and the Dolphins are curious want to see what the kid can do. My guess is Beck will be passing early and often.

The Steelers are anxious to prove last week's debacle at the Meadowlands was a fluke. Ben Roethlisberger & Co. will do their best New England impression and run up the score against an undermatched Miami team.

                    Last week's record: 1-2

                    Season record: 19-14

NFL poolies' cheat sheet: Week 12

                      Miami at Pittsburgh (-16)

Why Dolphins cover: Are averaging 5.4 yards per rushing play, third best in the NFL. Ricky Williams returns to face a Pittsburgh rush defense that allowed Thomas Jones to gain 117 yards on the ground last week. Held Ben Roethlisberger to 163 yards passing in their last meeting.

Why Steelers cover: Have won last four meetings. Are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games. Dolphins’ defense has only 12 sacks this season and has allowed 30 total touchdowns. Willie Parker rushed for 115 yards in his only game against Miami.

Total (41): Over is 6-1-1 in Steelers’ last eight home games versus a team with a losing road record.

What bettors need to know: Dolphins at Steelers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers (-16, 40 1/2)

                        'Run, Ricky, Run'

The Dolphins need something to spark their season into life after a dismal 0-10 start. They might just take a chance on running back Ricky Williams, after he returned to practice this week following an 18-month suspension.

Miami's prodigal son received the ban for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and hasn't played in an NFL game since the end of the 2005 season. Williams is eligible to play against Steelers on Monday night, and coach Cam Cameron did not rule him out of contention after a 'solid' day of practice on Thursday.

"We'll just see how he practices and continues to practice and see what the recovery looks like from day to day," Cameron told Florida Today. "Right now, here's a guy that's fresh. Now, when you get up tomorrow and after you've just kind of got to watch it evolve, take it one day at a time, and see what the recovery is like."
His teammates were openly enthusiastic about his return.

"He looked good," linebacker Channing Crowder said. "He was cutting and running good. We'll see, it might be 'Run Ricky, Run' again, like old times."

The big question surrounding Williams is whether or not he can recreate the form that saw him rush for a franchise record 1,853 yards in 2002. He hasn't played a full season since 2003, but says he feels good right now.

"I haven't played football in a year, and then to get on the field and feel it all come back so quickly was a little surprising," he said.

The Dolphins might actually be forced into using Williams due to injury problems. The team's original starting running back Ronnie Brown is out for the season. His replacement, Jesse Chatman, was limited in practice on Saturday and is said to be a game-time decision with a sprained ankle.

                        Roethlisberger tired of being hit

Ben Roethlisberger is hurting. The Steelers quarterback has been sacked 30 times in just 10 games, admitting this week that his body is suffering.

"I'm a little more beat up, but that comes with the territory of being the quarterback and getting hit," Roethlisberger told the Washington Observer-Reporter. "I think we'll be able to shut that down real soon."

Pittsburgh's offensive line showed no signs of shutting down the New York Jets in last week's 19-16 loss. Roethlisberger was sacked a season-high seven times in that game.

"I can't necessarily pinpoint every sack and tell you what happened, but I will tell you they did have a couple of coverage sacks," Roethlisberger said after that game. "Guys were covered down the field."

Miami has recorded just 12 sacks in 10 games. But the Jets had just nine in their first nine contests before meeting the Steelers last Sunday.

Roethlisberger is on course to be sacked 48 times this season. The previous team record is 51, set by Cliff Stoudt in 1983.

                        Work in progress

The Dolphins handed quarterback John Beck his first NFL start last week in Philadelphia. Despite losing 17-7, they were impressed with the rookie's performance. He completed just over 40 percent of his passes for 109 yards, and showed good command of the football.

"Honestly, I think he played really well," tight end David Martin told Florida Today. "He was real poised. Of course, he wasn't perfect, nobody was. But he really spoke up and led that huddle. Those are the things you look for."

Beck's numbers could, and probably should, have looked much better. Several of his incompletions were due to dropped passes by the receivers. Still, the young QB is hoping for a vast improvement this week.

"Because I am so critical of myself, I knew that after the game I was going to see things that I knew I needed to improve on, and see things that maybe I didn't notice in the game ? stuff like my feet," Beck said. "I found things I want to work on, and that's why when I get on the practice field, I'm trying to fix them."

A trip to Heinz Field is a daunting task for a young quarterback who is considered a work in progress. The Steelers' defense, ranked No. 1 in the NFL, is a physical group that loves to intimidate opponents, especially rookie QBs.

"I'm quite sure (Beck has) seen the film," Pittsburgh linebacker Larry Foote said. "He knows our motto. We're going to come after him. He knows that. Monday night, we're going to come after him, and he's going to have to adjust on the run."

The Steelers' 'D' is holding opponents to just 156.3 yards per game in the air, and has recorded 28 sacks for the season.

                        Double injury blow

Pittsburgh will be without an important player on each side of the ball for the clash with Miami. Safety Troy Polamalu and wide receiver Santonio Holmes both picked up injuries in last week's loss to the Jets and have been ruled out for Monday.

Polamalu, who is struggling with a knee injury, is having a slow year by his standards. He has no interceptions and no sacks for the season, but his versatility is an important part of the defense.

Tyrone Carter, who was very quick to downplay fans? expectations of him, will replace Polamalu.

"I can't be Troy out there," Carter told reporters on Friday. "I've just got to play my game. There are things he does well and things I do well."

Holmes, meanwhile, has a sprain in his upper right ankle. His absence is a major setback to a Pittsburgh offense that managed only 151 passing yards and a single touchdown against the Jets.

He leads the team in receptions (39), touchdown catches (7) and yards per catch (17). Nate Washington gets the job of filling his shoes.

"It's going to require multiple people to step up and fill the roles they provide for us, which is great," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said of the injuries. "This is a team, and it's the ultimate team game. We're looking forward to these guys stepping up and delivering for us."

                        Head to head

Pittsburgh has won, and covered, in three straight games against Miami. The Steelers are 6-4 ATS for the season, while the Dolphins have a 2-5-3 against the spread record.

The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings between these teams.

Utah Jazz at New York Knicks (7:30 PM ET)

Utah will be going for its second straight road win following an impressive 10-point win at Detroit on Sunday. The Jazz are one of the best home teams in the NBA and are very focused on becoming better on the road. "We know we've been a bad road team, and we are really focused on changing that," Utah forward Carlos Boozer said. "D and I talked during the second quarter, and we decided we needed to break the game open." EDGE: JAZZ
The Knicks snapped an eight-game losing streak with a win over a struggling Chicago team on Saturday and will face a much bigger challenge here with rumors continuing to swirl around head coach Isiah Thomas' future. "In New York, you're either dead or alive," Thomas said. "You lose a game and you're dead and you win one and you basically get to survive." EDGE: JAZZ
Jazz are 8-19 ATS in their last 27 road games.
Jazz are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games on 0 days rest.

Minnesota Timberwolves at New Orleans Hornets (8 PM ET)

The Hornets broke out a shootin slump from beyond the 3-point arc in Saturday's win against the Clippers, making 8-of-15 after shooting just 20.3 percent (13-of-64) during a three-game losing streak. New Orleans ranks second in the NBA in 3-point field-goal percentage at 40.2 percent. EDGE: HORNETS
Minnesota has dropped five in a row, losing by an average of 11.2 points per game. The Timberwolves are off to the worst start in the NBA and have dropped 17 of 18 dating back to last season. EDGE: HORNETS
Timberwolves are 15-40-2 ATS in their last 57 games overall.
Timberwolves are 0-8 ATS in their last 8 against the Southwest division.
Hornets are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 home games against a losing road team.
Hornets are 15-7 ATS in their last 22 games as a home favorite.
The underdog is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

Washington Wizards at Dallas Mavericks (8:30 PM ET)

Dallas will be looking to avoid its first three-game losing streak in more than a year after losing at Indiana and Milwaukee to close out a three-game road trip. The Mavs are a perfect 6-0 at home this season, winning by an average of 11.1 points per game. EDGE: MAVS
Washington hasn't missed Gilbert Arenas in the last three games, but insiders wonder how long Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison can carry the load offensively. Butler and Jamison are both averaging more than 30 points per game in Arenas' absence, and their weak defense could be exposed by a Dallas team that would love to run. The Wizards have given up at least 100 points in four straight, including at least 120 in the last two. EDGE: MAVS
Wizards are 36-16 ATS in their last 52 road games against a winning home team.
Wizards are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a road undersdog.
Mavericks are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games against a losing road team.
Mavericks are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games playing on 1 days rest.
Wizards are 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

Orlando Magic at Portland Trail Blazers (10 PM ET)

Orlando's Dwight Howard has been an absolute monster the last four games, averaging 27.3 points and 15.3 rebounds while shooting 75.9 percent from the field. Howard has recorded a double double in 13 of 15 games this season. BIG EDGE: MAGIC
Portland is 0-7 SU at home but an impressive 5-1 at home. The Blazers are shooting 49.1 percent from the field at the Rose Garden - including 40.9 percent from 3-point range - two of the top marks for any team at home in the NBA. EDGE: BLAZERS
Magic are 20-7-2 ATS in their last 29 games overall.
Magic are 13-3-2 ATS in their last 18 road games.

Blazers are 36-17 ATS in their last 53 games as a small home underdog.
The Magic are 3-9-2 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

San Antonio Spurs at Sacramento Kings (10 PM ET)

Spurs are 19-7-2 ATS in their last 28 games as a favorite.
Spurs are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games as a 5 to 10.5 point favorite.

Warriors are 46-21-3 ATS in their last 70 games as a home underdog.
Warriors are 36-17-1 ATS in their last 54 games when playing on 1 days rest.
Suns are 1-6 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Golden State.

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Clippers (10:30 PM ET)

Houston ended its six-game losing streak with a 109-81 rout of Denver on Saturday. The Rockets got 35 points from star Tracy McGrady, who made 13-of-23 shots after making just 13-of-39 in his previous two games combined after returning from an elbow injury. Yao Ming added 22 points and 13 rebounds to show how effective they can be when playing well together. "We said we have to get back to playing the type of offense we played in the beginning of the season and that's what we did," McGrady said. "Tonight showed how good we can be offensively." EDGE: ROCKETS
The Clippers are hurting big time, with former Rocket Cuttino Mobley the latest casualty due to a sore groin. Mobley scored a team-high 20 points in Saturday's loss to the Hornets and is playing through the pain while teammates Elton Brand (Achilles), Shaun Livingston (knee), Corey Maggette (hamstring) and Brevin Knight (groin) are out. "I was always a guy who never quit," Mobley said. "You play with injuries. It's as simple as that. Some guys don't, and that's testing their manhood. But some people have higher pain tolerance, and I'm one of those guys." EDGE: ROCKETS
Rockets are 8-22 ATS in their last 30 games overall.
Rockets are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games against the Western Conference.
Clippers are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games as a home underdog.
Clippers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The road team is 16-5 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
