                  Kansas/Missouri pick with write up

Missouri vs. Kansas on Saturday, November 24th

Missouri (10-1, 6-1 Big 12, #4 BCS) heads into The Border Showdown with one of the country's most explosive offenses and an underrated defense that has improved steadily all season. Offensive Coordinator Dave Christiansen's crew has racked up at least 30 points in each game this season including at least 40 in their last 5 contests, ranking in the top 10 nationally in points per game (42.5), pass yards per game (334.0), totals yards per game (506.3), and 3rd-down conversions (56%). At the trigger is Maxwell and O'Brian Awards semi-finalist 6'0" 225 junior QB Chase Daniel (309 of 446 for 3590 yards, 30 TD, 9 INT) who holds NCAA top 10 marks in TD passes, completions, pass yards, completion percentage, and pass efficiency while leading the Tigers 38 TD and 12 field goals in 55 Red Zone trips. 6'6" 255 TE Martin Rucker (70 for 699 and 7 TD) passed on the 2007 NFL Draft to return for his senior season and leads not only Missouri is grabs but also the nation among tight ends. No less than 7 Tigers have caught at least 10 balls this season including 4 with at least 500 yards receiving and while Rucker represents the veteran leadership of the unit, it's 6'1" 200 freshman WR Jeremy Macklin (59 for 885 and 9 TD receiving, 38 for 287 and 4 TD rushing, 12.2 per punt return, 24.5 per kick return) that is the team's most explosive contributor. Macklin broke the all time national mark of totals yards by a freshman (2309) with a 99-yard kickoff return in the first quarter of last week's 49-32 win at Kansas State becoming the sole player in the country with scores rushing (4), receiving (9), punt returning (2), and kick returning. Head Coach Gary Pinkel's (47-36 in 7th year in Columbia) receivers have thrown 5 passes this season so don't be surprised if he gives Macklin a shot at adding a touchdown pass to his resume. Stop Daniel and you stop the Tigers? Not hardly. The crew up front averages 6'5 1/2", tipping the scales at 310 per man, and is more than capable of pounding opponents on the ground with 5'9" 205 senior RB Tony Temple (127 for 634 and 8 TD), 5'9" 200 RB Jimmy Jackson (56 for 277 and 6 TD), and 5'11" 210 RB Derrick Washington (33 for 179 and TD) leading a rushing attack that has produced 172.3 yards per game and 23 trips to pay dirt. And don't expect this squad to hurt itself. 16 sacks, 11 picks, 5 lost fumbles have been surrendered by Missouri in 2007 and just 17 3-and-outs in 11 games is positively sick. While offensive production has overshadowed the progress made by Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus's group, Big 12 opponents can attest to their improvement. In conference play Missouri has given up just 21.9 points, 248.3 pass yards, and 100.3 rush yards per game while racking up 25 sacks, 12 interceptions, and 12 fumble recoveries for the year - despite the loss to a ruptured Achilles' heel of one of the nation's top players, SS Cornelius "Pig" Brown (70 T, 8 TFL, 3 INT, and a 100-yard fumble return TD in 8 games). The rotation of 6'0" 195 sophomore Hardy Ricks (20 T, 2 TFL), 6'2" 210 junior Justin Garrett (34 T, 2 INT), and 5'11" 200 sophomore Del Howard (26 T) have done a decent job replacing Pig but the Tiger to keep your eye on in the secondary is 6'1" 220 junior FS William "Willy Mo" Moore (82 T, 7 TFL, 2 S, 6 INT) who packs one heck of a wallop while displaying NFL caliber ball skills. 6'1" 295 senior DT Lorenzo Williams (24 T, 8 TFL, 5 S) has also caught the eyes of pro scouts with his ability to penetrate and disrupt from the nose while linebackers 6'2" 245 junior Brock Christopher (81 T, 6 1/2 TFL, 1 1/2 S, INT) and 6'1" 240 Sean Weatherspoon (102 T, 8 TFL, 2 S) each have the potential to become All Americans in 2008. Missouri has been flagged for a total of just 49 times all season, averaging only 32.8 yards per game in penalty yardage.

Kansas (11-0, 7-0 Big 12 #2 BCS) rolled over Iowa State by the score of 45-7 last Saturday and that win, combined with losses by Oregon and Ohio State, finally made it impossible for the pollsters to deny "The Fighting Manginos" an inside track to the National Championship. Head Coach Mark Mangino (36-35 in 6th year at Lawrence) is absolutely worshipped by his players and represents a classic story of a kid from hardcore football country working his way to all the way to the top of the polls. From coaching at his alma maters New Castle High School (per capita this town must have more serious sports betters than any city in America) and Youngstown State (maybe the toughest city in the US in the years Mangino was there) to being recognized as the NCAA's top assistant coach at Oklahoma and Kansas State to 3 wins from a National Title. If this were a movie, the Jayhawks would certainly be hoisting the hardware as the credits rolled down. The Hawks' offense is one of the best in college football by any measure with 210.6 rush yards and 289.5 pass yards leading to 45.8 points per game (#2 nationally) with 42 TD and 15 FG in 63 Red Zone trips. Outland Trophy Finalist (along with Louisiana State's Glenn Dorsey and Michigan's Jake Long) 6'6" 310 junior LT Anthony Collins (9 knockdowns per game) and his squad mates 6'3" 305 junior LG Adrian Mayes, 6'3" 290 junior C Ryan Cantrell, 6'4" 310 junior RG Chet Hartley, and 6'7" 290 senior RT Ceasar Rodriguez have racked up 54 of 55 possible starts this season while plowing the way for 5.1 yards per rush and 27 ground attack scores with 6'0" 235 senior RB Brandon McAnderson (161 for 1009 and 15 TD) and 5'10" 190 sophomore RB Jake Sharp (137 for 788 and 7 TD) making up Offensive Coordinator Ed Warinner's Thunder and Lightning attack. Kansas runs a spread attack with 5'11" 200 sophomore QB Todd Reesing (228 of 360 for 2910 yards, 30 TD, 4 INT) picking and choosing among wide receivers 6'4" 210 senior Marcus Henry (50 for 977 and 8 TD), 6'0" 200 junior Dexton Fields (48 for 617 and 5 TD), and 6'3" 200 freshman Dezmon Briscoe (34 for 382 and 7 TD) plus 3-time letterman 6'3" 250 senior TE Derek Fine (41 for 351 and 4 TD). Pick your poison; 8 different Jayhawks have caught TD passes and 7 have scored rushing TD. Durability has been a hallmark of Defensive Coordinator Bill Young's stingy squad. Kansas's first string stoppers have basically made all 121 possible starts - co-starters Patrick Resby (22 T) and Justin Thornton (28 T, 4 INT) have split the job and SS while co-starters Kendrick Harper (19 T, 2 TFL, INT) and Chris Harris (49 T, 1 1/2 TFL, INT) have slip the job at RCB - while giving up just 86.0 rush yards, 214.0 pass yards, and 14.2 points per game. The unit up front 6'4" 240 junior LDE Russell Brorsen (26 T, 2 1/2 TFL), 6'5" 290 sophomore LDT Caleb Blakesley (13 T, 2 TFL, S), 6'1" 285 senior RDT James McClinton (36 T, 10 1/2 TFL, 2 S), and 6'3" 250 junior RDE John Larson (32 T, 9 TFL, 1 1/2 S) has displayed remarkable athleticism with 4 interceptions between them while Kansas's defense can claim one of the college football's most versatile players in Aqib Talib. 6'2" 205 junior LCB Talib (55 T, 3 1/2 TFL, 4 INT including a 100-yard pick return TD) brings NFL size and speed to the position plus doubles at a big-play wide receiver on offense where he has caught 8 passes for 182 yards and 4 TD this season. Like the Tigers, Kansas makes very few mistakes with just 11 turnovers (versus 32 created by the defense) and 37.5 penalty yards per game.
SELECTION: The nation's 2nd most-played rivalry (53-53-9) will be played at neutral site Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City Saturday evening (forecast of about 40 degrees and partly cloudy at game time) with "The Bass Drum" and the Big 12 North Title on the line. OK, so the Jayhawks' perfect record doesn't include wins over Missouri, Oklahoma, or Texas yet but the edge they have over the Tigers on the defensive side of the ball will give them the opportunity at 2 of those 3 before the season is finished. Take
