savage 1 ..... I have to say that they are in line to give us a great run and your ticket a very fair chance of not hitting the floor.

    The Power of Nine :

By now you must be shaking your noggin over the Boston Redsox . Thier line-up does little to invoke the legend of the 27 Yankees or the 76 Reds , but someway , somehow they are putting up better numbers . They are on pace to set a hanfull of single-season records [ slugging pct. , total bases , doubles , home runs [players with 20 or more ] ].

    Line Them Up :

A look at how the Redsox stack-up against thier A.L. counterparts at each spot in the batting order [the avg. for each spot is in parenthesis]

C.F. : Johnny Damon - on pace to exceed 100 runs & 25 stolen bases for the 6th straight time
    OB%- .348 [ .329 ]
    Slug % - .416 [ .404 ]
    Runs - 88 [ 87 ]

2B : Todd Walker - the weakest link ? since the all-star break his on base and slug % is down over 60 points compared to the first half
    O.B.% - .321 [ .340 ]
    Slug % - .405 [ .429 ]
    Runs - 78 [ 90 ]

    SS : Nomar Garciaparra - slug% at home .707 - on the road .401
    O.B.% - .365 [ .362 ]
    Slug % - .558 [.490 ]
    Runs - 105 [ 86 ]

L.F. : Manny Ramirez - has not batted in any spot but 4th all year
    O.B.% - .418 [.368 ]
    Slug % - .573 [.485 ]
    Runs - 100 [82 ]

    D.H. : David Ortiz - a Yankee nemesis , he has a .949 slug% , six taters , 13 rbi , in 11 against them this year
    O.B.% - .369 [.337 ]
    Slug % - .589 [.442 ]
    Runs - 64 [74 ]

    1B : Kevin Millar - game winning rbi = 11
    O.B.% - .356 [.324 ]
    Slug % - .493 [.427 ]
    Runs - 76 [65 ]

    R.F. : Trot Nixon - 24 homers [ career high 27 ]
    O.B. % - .395 [.324 ]
    Slug% - .570 [.415 ]
    Runs - 73 [62 ]

3B : Bill Mueller : career bests in homers , rbi , and might hit .300 for the first time
    O.B. % - .403 [.304 ]
    Slug % - .559 [.370 ]
    Runs -73 [ 57 ]

C : Jason Varitek - best number nine hitter in all of baseball
    O.B. % - .353 [.298 ]
    Slug % - .532 [.357 ]
    Runs - 53 [55]

Thier walks per game is up from last year 3.8 per , only team in history that thier batting avg. at home .324 is better than thier on-base-% on the road .322 , pitches per plate appearance is way up [ working the pitchers better ] .

So the question remains : Is the offense good enough to over come a sometimes shaky bullpen , shallow rotation , and mediocre defense ? How many other teams won a championship by clubbing teams to death , they say you win them with pitching and defense .

If ever an offense could buck that trend , its the Redsox

They have the numbers to prove it !

      Great article, Memphis.
They are not the Big Red Machine of the 70's, no.
However, principle is the same;get men on base, drive em home, outslug the opponents and hope you get respectable pitching especially bullpen if game is close.

Nut-if Sox do it, I might just get in my car and drive up to Montreal and buy you a dinner to celebrate!
If Wayne wishes, I will pick him up on the way.
