    NFL
Total bias: Week 12 over/under plays

    Sunday, November 25

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    NFL over/under picks
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars over 36 1/2

The Jags have been identified as a defensive team since Jack Del Rio took over the club in 2003. This year things have been out of whack. Jacksonville is allowing an average 351 yards per game. The loss of middle linebacker Mike Peterson won?t help correct this trend.

Jacksonville hasn't played under for four straight weeks but oddsmakers continue to pair low totals with the squad.

Buffalo will still be without running back Marshawn Lynch this weekend, but that should only increase the likelihood of the Bills airing it out.

Baltimore Ravens at San Diego Chargers over 38 1/2

I'm picking on another overrated defense. The one thing you could always depend on with the Ravens was a long-scoring yawner, but as Bob Dylan says, the times they are a changin'.

Baltimore's stout defenders got old quickly. The club is left with a bunch of creaky knees and bad backs.

San Diego will bounce back and find the end zone multiple times.

Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers over 41

The Fish may be forced to put Ricky Williams back in action earlier than planned because of Jesse Chatman's sore ankle. This will be rookie quarterback John Beck?s second start and the Dolphins are curious want to see what the kid can do. My guess is Beck will be passing early and often.

The Steelers are anxious to prove last week's debacle at the Meadowlands was a fluke. Ben Roethlisberger & Co. will do their best New England impression and run up the score against an undermatched Miami team.

    Last week's record: 1-2

    Season record: 19-14

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (-11, 49)
        Sunday, Nov. 25, 5:30 p.m. ET

Winnipeg is 10-10 against the spread (ATS) this season including the playoffs, inferior to Saskatchewan's 12-8 ATS mark. But the Bombers covered the spread in the teams' head-to-head meetings this season, both as a 6-point underdog in Regina in Week 10 (a 31-26 Saskatchewan win on a last-second Kerry Joseph touchdown) and as a 2 ?-point home favorite a week later (a game the Bombers won 34-15).

Winnipeg is a heavy underdog on Sunday because of Glenn's broken arm. Former Boise State star Ryan Dinwiddie starts at quarterback and, if nothing else, he?s kept the press entertained throughout the week. He's confident-bordering-on-cocky and has an accurate arm, both attributes you like to see in a quarterback.

More importantly, however, Dinwiddie has proven game-breakers surrounding him on offense. None will be more important on Sunday afternoon than Charles Roberts, who finally gets a crack at a league championship.

I like Saskatchewan to walk away with the Cup on Sunday afternoon, I just don't like the Riders laying 11 points. Winnipeg's defense came up huge last week in the Rogers Centre, so expecting Saskatchewan to hang a double-digit margin of victory on Sunday is a bit unreasonable.

Picks: Blue Bombers +11 and over 49

        First quarter line: Saskatchewan -3, 9 1/2

A touchdown and three rouges for the over? Count me in!

Seriously, Dinwiddie showed no qualms about going deep in his relief appearance last week. The commentators in the CBC booth assumed Winnipeg would revert to a conservative game plan to protect the lead. But Dinwiddie showed he isn't afraid to make plays and head coach Doug Berry showed he isn't afraid to ask his young quarterback to do the same.

Saskatchewan will try to blitz Dinwiddie into submission, which should leave plenty of one-on-one situations downfield. Whether it's Milt Stegall, Derick Armstrong or Terrence Edwards, I?m counting on one of the Bombers receivers to find the end zone early.

        First-quarter picks: Blue Bombers +3 and over 9 1/2

        First half line: Saskatchewan -7, 24 1/2

Once the Bombers score early, however, I'm counting on the Riders to step up and take what the entire province of Saskatchewan has been waiting for since Dave Ridgway booted the Cup-winner in 1989.

Head coach Kent Austin quarterbacked that champion Riders squad and will make sure this year?s version plays with intensity. Austin returns to the city where he was frequently criticized as an offensive coordinator, which would make a win a little sweeter. There's no criticizing the job he has done in Regina this year. He doles out equal amounts of encouragement and criticism and has the respect of his team.

Joseph is Austin's No. 1 weapon on offense and also the No. 1 reason I like the over throughout this game. He?s the league's top run-pass double-threat and has full confidence in receivers D.J. Flick and Andy Fantuz.

The Bombers' pass defense looked vulnerable at times in Toronto last week (don't put too much stock in the final score, Michael Bishop was off on a lot of passes). As long as Joseph has quick enough feet to evade the rush, and he does, then he should be able to make hay with his receivers.

        First-half pick: over 24 1/2

        Last week: 1-1

        Year to date: 36-40

            Friday's College Basketball

            Top Five Games

Florida State (+8) beat Florida 70-66 LY; now inexperienced but talented Gators have toughest foe yet, after hammering bunch of stiffs in their first five games. Seminoles lost couple of close games on neutral court (Cleveland State, USF) but also beat on Georgia Southern team by 25 that went 3-0 in their tournament.

George Mason shredded young K-State team last night, draw another young team in Villanova, which beat local favorite UCF 76-68. Patriots scored 87 last night despite turning ball over 20 times- they got to line 38 times. Villanova takes lot of 3's (11-30) Thursday; Mason held K-State to 2-16 from arc last night.

Texas A&M has edge in experience over young Ohio St squad that beat local favorite Syracuse Wednesday; Aggies took 40 foul shots Wednesday (22-40), held Washington to 38.5% from floor. Buckeyes ehld Syracuse to 36.2%, 5-25 from arc, winning what was basically a road game, given Orange crowd support.

Southern Illinois' defensive pressure stifled Chattanooga last night, holding Mocs to 29.7% from floor, forcing 26 turnovers; now they get bigger, more athletic Mississippi St team that beat local favorite Irvine in first round. Bulldogs were +16 on boards vs UCI, held Anteaters to 35.2% shooting from the floor.

Texas Tech had easy time with UAA Thursday, now they go way up in class, facing Gonzaga, who beat Western Kentucky in high level game last night, primarily because they got WKU in foul trouble (Zags had 28-17 edge in FTs taken). Tech lost to Sam Houston earlier this month;they haven't fared well up in Alaska in past visits (3-4 after Thursday's win).

            Rest of the Card

-- Buffalo lost 82-57 at UConn (+17.5), then got whacked by 17 at Niagara Tuesday. Pitt's best win so far was 69-58 vs St Louis 12 days ago. Panthers are picked to finish 8th in the Big East.

-- Alabama lost to Belmont at home in last game, as they keep looking for PG with Steele (knees) out for year. Southern Miss lost 67-59 at Cal last week; they're picked 4th in better C-USA.

-- Yale is spunky dog, as evidenced by 72-61 cover at Stanford Tuesday (+18). UCLA is just back from big win in Kansas City vs Michigan State, winning after being down 36-25 at the half.

-- Penn State lost 74-67 yesterday to South Carolina, going 4-25 from arc but they outrebounded Carolina 50-28. Rider led NC State at half, but lost 72-63, getting outscored 23-5 from charity stripe. Star Thompson played 39 minutes yesterday.

-- South Carolina has talented new transfers in backcourt; they beat Penn State by 7 Thursday, behind explosive Downey, who ran amuck vs Lions. NC State is struggling some, losing to New Orleans in last game before yesterday's struggle vs Rider.

-- Central Florida is home team for this event; they're picked 7th in improved C-USA; Knights already beat Nevada, hung in vs Villanova last night. Kansas State is young, very talented, but immature; they almost lost it with refs last night, a bad sign.

-- Loyola Md is 3-2 so far, with pair of 4-point wins; they're the #2 pick in MAAC, improved league. Howard just beat LaSalle and Penn; they're picked fifth in usually-weak MEAC.

-- Robert Morris is picked 3rd in NEC; they took Seton Hall to OT before losing, good sign. Drexel lost by 14 at Virginia, beat Penn in OT; they're doing little rebuilding this year, picked #4 in rebuilding CAA.

-- Virginia had great win at Arizona Saturday, then came home, beat Drexel by 14 Tuesday. Penn is struggling, losing three of their first four games. Quakers are not favored to win Ivy for first time in many years.

-- Seton Hall hasn't lost yet, but they needed OT to beat both Monmouth, Robert Morris- they're young, improving. Navy is picked 7th in Patriot League; they beat Canisius in last game.

-- Washington took just 15 FTs to 40 for Texas A&M in loss on Wednesday; Huskies were 2-13 from arc, which is where they'll miss injured Appleby. Syracuse shot 36% in loss to Buckeyes, missing 20 of 25 treys, but they're young, figure to improve.

-- Ohio State has Greek big man Koufos, who is inside/outside threat; they shot 9-19 from arc, 49% for game, withstanding -10 night on boards vs Syracuse. Texas Aggies were just 22-40 on line vs Washington, but they held Huskies to 38% from floor.

            -
            -

-- Cal-Irvine was -16 on boards in loss to Miss State Thursday; Chattanooga had 26 turnovers, shot under 30% in loss to the Salukis; they've had lousy second halves when they've played good teams this month.

-- South Alabama has new coach in Ronnie Arrow; Jaguars hit on just 8-21 from foul line in game they lost by five points. San Diego lost by 10 to USC, in game that closer than that- they'll be glad not to see OJ Mayo on other bench tonight.

-- Miami, OH edged South Alabama last night 64-59, lucky that Jags missed 13 of 21 foul shots. Mayo, Gibson both had 20 for USC team that figures to get lot better as season progresses; they beat gritty San Diego club by 10.

              Hot Lines

              Friday, November 23

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets

Golden State Warriors at Washington Wizards (-1 1/2, 217 1/2)

The Wizards, winners of five straight and six straight ATS, are 3-0 against the spread (ATS) since losing scoring leader Gilbert Arenas to a knee ailment. It now looks like Arenas will be out for three months or more following knee surgery.

Fortunately, Caron Butler has been shouldering the offensive load for Washington, averaging more than 19 points per contest in his last three outings.

Washington has won three of its last four meetings with Golden State.

              Pick: Wizards

              Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic (-9 1/2, 194 1/2)

Orlando squandered a four-point first half lead on Wednesday, en route to an embarrassing 128-110 setback to the San Antonio Spurs. It marked the team's first road loss in seven outings this season.

The Magic have won two straight at home and should respond with a strong performance against the road-weary Warriors. Orlando is an impressive 5-0 ATS in its last five outings after a setback.

              Pick: Wizards

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics (-7, 201 1/2)

Los Angeles has one of the NBA?s most explosive offenses and that has helped propel them to two wins in their last three road games.

The Lakers are scoring more than 106 points per contest on 47 percent shooting. Kobe Bryant leads the team in scoring with more than 26 points per night and he's also shooting a career-high 46 percent from the field.

The Lakers, 4-1 ATS in their last five games, are also 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings at the Garden.

              Pick: Lakers

Houston Rockets at Miami Heat (+1 1/2, 179)

Miami just doesn?t have the offensive firepower to challenge a healthy Rockets club.

The Heat rank last in the league in scoring with less than 86 points per outing and they're shooting a mediocre 42 percent from the field. Miami is also hitting a meager 31 percent of their shots from the three-point line. The charity stripe hasn?t provided any relief either where they're just 67 percent.

              Pick: Houston

Philadelphia 76ers at Detroit Pistons (N/A)

Pistons star point guard Chauncey Billups piled up an impressive 25 points and 15 assists in Wednesday's tilt against the New York Knicks.

Detroit has won eight of its last 10 against the Sixers and is 4-1 ATS in its last five meetings with Philadelphia. That includes covering the spread twice without Billups in the lineup.

              Pick: Pistons

Dallas Mavericks at Indiana Pacers (+7 1/2, 205)

The Mavericks have had to fight from behind to win their last two games. Dallas shouldn't have to fight back against the lowly Pacers, though.

The Mavs have won four of their last five tilts with Indiana and have covered the spread in three of the last four meetings.

              Pick: Pacers

Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs (-12, 203)

The Grizzlies are 1-4 on the road and have lost nine of their last 10 against the Spurs. Memphis has also struggled on defense conceding a league-worst 107 points per game on 46 percent shooting.

The Grizzlies have also been outscored by an average of seven points per contest in their last eight losses to the Spurs. The Spurs are one day removed from their blowout win over Orlando, which isn't a bad spot for them. They are 5-1 ATS in their last six after winning their previous contest.

              Pick: Spurs

              Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets (-13 1/2, 203 1/2)

The Timberwolves should remain winless on the road until at least Tuesday because they don't stand a chance against the surging Nuggets.

Nuggets? stars Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson are both averaging more than 24 points. Marcus Camby is the NBA?s rebounding leader with more than 15 per game he's also chipping in with 10 points a night.

The Nuggets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven outings. They are also 7-2 ATS in their last nine home meetings with the Timberwolves.

              Pick: Nuggets

New Orleans Hornets at Utah Jazz (-5 1/2, 198 1/2)

New Orleans is without center Tyson Chandler, which leaves them exposed to Utah's powerful frontcourt.

Utah forward Carlos Boozer has had his way against the Hornets in the past. Boozer scored an impressive 20 points and 10 rebounds in last season?s 96-86 win over New Orleans at the Delta Center.

The Jazz are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 home contests.

              Pick: Jazz

Los Angeles Clippers at Phoenix Suns (-12, 211)

The struggling Clippers were pounded by a combined 41 points in their last two contests by the Pistons and the Warriors.

It will be even more difficult for the Clippers to crack the win column on Friday. Los Angeles will be without leading scorer Corey Maggette. The athletic forward, who is scoring more than 19 points per game, will miss the next couple of weeks with a strained hamstring.

Phoenix, winner of seven straight, have covered the spread in four of their last five home meetings with the Clippers.

              Pick: Suns

Sacramento Kings at Portland Trail Blazers (N/A)

The Kings aren't athletic enough to compete with the Blazers' deep bench, especially at the Rose Garden.

Portland had five players score double-figure points versus the Nets on Wednesday. The Blazers are also amassing more than 99 points per outing at the Rose Garden, four points more than they do on the road.

Portland is 4-1 SU and ATS at home this season while Sacramento is winless on the road. The Blazers have also covered the spread in five of their last seven meetings with the Kings in Portland.

              Pick: Blazers

New Jersey Nets at Seattle SuperSonics (+2, 195 1/2)

The offensively potent SuperSonics are in a good position to register their first home victory on Friday against the struggling Nets.

Seattle is averaging more than 100 points per contest and had eight players register double-digit points last Monday against Memphis. That includes 11 points from rookie Kevin Durant, who is averaging more than 19 per outing. The Sonics, coming off a five-game road swing, are averaging more than 105 points during that stretch.

The Sonics are 4-2 ATS at home and 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with the Nets.

              Pick: SuperSonics

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL wagers

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes (-160, 6)

When the Lightning strike, the Hurricanes are usually on the losing end. Tampa has beaten its Southeast Division rival six consecutive times, which includes four straight in Carolina as a road underdog.

The Bolts have managed at least three goals in each of those victories, while holding the Canes to two or fewer goals in five of those contests.

                    Pick: Lightning +140

New York Rangers at Florida Panthers (+105, 5)

It may be hard to see a show on Broadway due to the stagehand strike, but the Rangers have found a winning formula off-Broadway. The Blueshirts opened the season with six straight road losses, but have turned things around by winning five consecutive games away from Madison Square Garden.

"It means a lot because we didn't start off too well on the road," tough guy Colton Orr told the Associated Press. "So to get confidence on the road and know that we're going to play well, it means a lot."

Four of New York's five road victories have been decided by one goal.

                    Pick: Rangers -125

Vancouver Canucks at St. Louis Blues (-130, 5)

Vancouver normally doesn't give goaltender Roberto Luongo much support - until recently. The Canucks have outscored their opponents 18-10 over the last four games and the over/under is 3-0-1 during that time.

Captain Markus Naslund should get a lot of credit for Vancouver's hot play, he's collected six tallies over the last four games.

                    Pick: Over 5

                      IRREGULAR DEFEAT

Eastern Conference-leading Ottawa fell to Pittsburgh 6-5 in a shootout on Thursday night. The Senators, who haven't lost consecutive regulation regular-season games since Dec. 19-21, have dropped four of six (2-0-3-1) after getting off to an NHL-record 13-1-0 start.

                      FIRED

Washington fired coach Glen Hanlon on Thursday. The Hall of Fame defenseman was a player, coach and executive with the Bruins for more than three decades until he retired in 1998. Johnson also played 15 years for Montreal during the late 1940s and 1950s, winning six Stanley Cups and the 1959 Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman.

                      SPEAKING

                            West Virginia vs. Tennessee
Tennessee showed how good it can be with a 109-40 win over Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday, but has not always clicked in the early going as evidenced by the Vols' lackluster 89-75 win over Prairie View in the game before. Bruce Pearl's team should get a stiff challenge today from West Virginia in the semis of the Legends Classic. The Mountaineers, under new head coach Bob Huggins, beat that same Prairie View team by 65 (106-41) while shooting 54.7 percent from the field. The Mountaineers look like a good underdog pick (+8) according to Dunkel, which has Tennessee favored by only 1. Dunkel Pick: West Virginia (+8). Here are all of today's games.
