This is the eighth meeting between UCLA and Maryland. The Bruins lead the series 5-2, including a win in the second round of the 2000 NCAA tournament.

    Princeton vs No. 10 Duke

Princeton, which won 72-55 on Dec. 12, 1981, for its only win over Duke, looks to avoid an 18th straight loss to a ranked team dating to a 69-64 victory over then-No. 23 Wake Forest on Dec. 19, 1997.

Missouri vs No. 12 Michigan St.

Michigan State has not faced Missouri since snapping a four-game losing streak to the Tigers with a 79-61 win on Dec. 15, 1984. Missouri, which leads the all-time series with the Spartans 4-2, is coming off a 95-50 win over Southern on Friday.

    UMKC at No. 17 Arizona

Missouri-Kansas City, which is 0-3 versus Pac-10 schools, will face its second ranked team after losing 85-62 at then-No. 4 Kansas on Nov. 11 to open the season.

After allowing three short-handed goals Saturday against Chicago, Detroit gave up three power-play scores to Columbus on Sunday but won 5-4.

              SUSPENDED

The NHL suspended Vancouver defenseman Mattias Ohlund for four games Sunday for his stick-swinging hit on Minnesota forward Mikko Koivu. SIDELINED

Chicago forward Rene Bourque will miss at least a month after breaking his thumb during Saturday's 5-3 win over Detroit. Bourque had two short-handed goals and an assist during the game, but injured his thumb while blocking a shot in the third period.

                  Western Michigan at Detroit
Detroit has had to play its first two games without all-Horizon League guard Brandon Cotton, who was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. The Titans were competitive in the second game before losing on the road at St. Louis (66-58). Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets

Tampa Bay Lightning at Atlanta Thrashers (-110, 6)

The NHL's two hottest players go head-to-head tonight when Vincent Lecavalier and the Lightning face Ilya Kovalchuk and the Thrashers. Both snipers are among the top five in the league in scoring and both have played pivotal roles in turning their teams’ seasons around.

Tampa Bay enters the matchup on a five-game winning streak and the Bolts have scored five or more goals in four straight games. Lecavailer notched 14 points during this stretch.

In three matchups this season, these two teams averaged over eight goals combined per contest.

                    Pick: over 6

Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens (+100, 5 ½)

The Sens are –130 favorites in tonight’s tilt with Montreal, which is a bargain considering Ottawa hasn’t been priced lower than that in 11 games. The Senators are just 2-2 in their last four games but at 15-3 still own the league's best record. Ottawa won both games against Montreal so far this season and are 11-6-1 versus the Habs in the last 18 games meetings.

                    Pick: Senators –130

Florida Panthers at Washington Capitals (-130, 5 ½)

This matchup features two of the league’s worst offenses. The Panthers and Capitals both sit in the bottom five in the league in scoring and both are playing their worst hockey of the season. Florida has lost five of its last six while averaging just two goals per game during that stretch. The Capitals have dropped their last three games while being held to two goals or less in each of those contests.

                    Pick: under 5 ½

Pick ‘n’ roll: Monday’s best NBA bets

Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Bobcats (-5 ½, 187)

The Blazers’ road woes continued on Saturday with a 109-90 loss to an under-strength Washington team. Portland has now lost all six of its road games this season, while being outscored by an average of 13 points per contest.

Portland’s offense ranks 26th in the league with 93.7 points per game, and is clearly missing the talents of No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden. The center underwent season-ending knee surgery in September.

“It has become obvious that Greg is needed," Blazers coach Nate McMillan told The Oregonian. "We said at the beginning of the season that we are thin at the bigs, and we are trying to make that up with our speed."

The Bobcats, meanwhile, have won two straight home games thanks to their strong defensive efforts. On Saturday, they held Kevin Durant and the SuperSonics to just 14 fourth-quarter points in a 100-84 victory.

“This team has definitely bought into defense," Bobcats coach Sam Vincent said after that game. That defense should be able to stifle the league’s worst road team on Monday.

                      Pick: Bobcats –5 ½

Seattle SuperSonics at Memphis Grizzlies (-6, 218)

The Sonics rode Kevin Durant to a 126-123 double overtime win over Atlanta on Friday night, with his three-pointer at the buzzer making the difference. But an obviously tired Durant managed only 16 points in Saturday’s loss to Charlotte, his second-lowest tally in any game this season.

If he is not fully recovered by Monday, the Sonics could struggle to generate offense. They’ve been struggling anyways, putting up just 99.4 points per game while shooting 43.1 percent from the field.

The good news for Seattle is that Memphis hasn’t been able to defend this season. The Grizzlies are giving up 108.9 points per game – the second-worst record in the league and the main reason why they are 2-7.

Considering the Sonics are 1-7, there’s not much between these teams. Memphis did beat Seattle 105-98 at home just over a week ago, covering a 6-point spread in the process. Based on that, the Grizzlies have the edge.

                      Pick: Grizzlies -6

New Jersey Nets at Utah Jazz (-10, 190 ½)

The New Jersey Nets have struggled badly in the absence of star forward Vince Carter, dropping five straight games and failing to cover in any of them. Carter is traveling with the team for the Nets’ four-game road trip, but is not expected to play on Monday.

New Jersey has been outscored by almost 13 points in each of its last five contests. The club has the worst offense in the NBA and has broken the 100-point mark just once – in its season opener.

Utah is on the opposite end of the offensive spectrum, averaging more than 107 points. The Jazz have won five of their last seven contests, with Carlos Boozer leading the team in points (25.3) and rebounds (11.5).

The Nets have won two of the last three meetings between the sides (covering the spread twice), but without Carter it’s unlikely they will break their losing streak.

                      Pick: Jazz -10

Orlando Magic at New Orleans Hornets (off)

The Orlando Magic boasts one of the best defenses in the league. But it is its offense that has come to the boil during the current four-game winning streak.

Center Dwight Howard is leading Orlando with 21.8 points per game, and has shot 62 percent or better from the field in his last three games. He is also the league’s leading rebounder with an average of 15 per game.

The Hornets are on the verge of their first six-game winning streak in a single season. They have already notched the best start in franchise history through 11 games. They were impressive once again in Saturday’s 100-82 win over Minnesota, with Jannero Pargo registering 15 points and seven assists.

These teams split two games against each other last season, with the road team winning on both occasions. But New Orleans has won and covered in three of its four home games this season, and can keep that streak going tonight.

                      Pick: Hornets

                        New Jersey at Utah
New Jersey has tanked since losing Vince Carter to an ankle sprain. The Nets have lost five straight with Carter out of the lineup, including four at home. The lone road game was a 22-point setback at Boston (91-69) on November 10. Tonight the short-handed Nets travel to Utah to face a Jazz team that has won four straight at home, the last two by an average margin of 24 points. Utah looks like the pick to cover (-10) according to Dunkel, which has the Jazz favored by 14 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Utah (-10). Here are all of today's games.

How was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar not in the College Hall of Fame's first class? He is the great college hoop player ever.

I still say "Pistol" Pete Maravich was the greatest college player we'll ever see.

The guy was unbelievable, averaging 44 ppg. And there was no three-point shot when he did this.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try some time, you might find, you get what you need.
