    College Football Gameday

Three important conference matchups that could all have major impacts on the BCS Bowls highlight this Saturday’s college football schedule, as No. 7 Ohio State faces No. 23 Michigan, No. 22 Kentucky takes on No. 8 Georgia and No. 18 Boston College travels to No. 15 Clemson.

Ohio State (7) at Michigan (23)

The Buckeyes had their national championships hopes dashed last week after a 28-21 upset loss to Illinois as a 15.5-point favorite. Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman had his worst game of the season at the wrong time, as he completed 12-of-23 passes for 156 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Chris Wells was unable to pick up the slack for the errant passing game, rushing for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 carries. The Buckeyes' defense has been the top-ranked D in the Big Ten, but couldn’t contain Illinois QB Juice Williams who had four touchdown passes.

Michigan also stumbled last week and lost to Wisconsin 37-21 as a 2.5-point favorite. At least partial blame for the Wolverines' defeat has to go to injury, as Michigan played without running back Mike Hart and only had starting QB Chad Henne for the first quarter. Hart sat out with an ankle injury that could force him to miss this week’s game, while Henne didn’t even last through the first quarter before a lingering shoulder injury sent him to the sidelines. Before departing, Henne completed 3-of-5 passes for 28 yards with an interception. Backup QB Ryan Mallett replaced Henne and went on to complete 11-of-36 passes for 245 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Without Hart the Michigan running game stalled, as Carlos Brown rushed for 38 yards on nine carries and Brandon Minor had 26 yards also on nine carries.

Last season when Ohio State and Michigan squared off the Buckeyes edged the Wolverines 42-39 as a 6.5-point favorite. In this year’s matchup the Buckeyes are a 4-point road favorite due to Michigan’s injuries.

    Kentucky (22) at Georgia (8)

The Wildcats are coming off a 27-20 win over Vanderbilt as a 3.5-point favorite. Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson was fairly quiet in the win, completing 17-of-28 passes for 222 yards with a touchdown. Running back Rafael Little rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries before leaving with a back injury. With Little out last week, Derrick Lowe took over the bulk of the rushing duties and rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Little is expected to play this weekend after being listed as probable. The Kentucky defense surrendered 432 yards to Vanderbilt, which included a lofty 239 rushing yards.

The Bulldogs mauled Auburn 45-20 as a 2-point favorite last week to take command in the SEC East. Georgia QB Matthew Stafford completed 11-of-19 passes for 237 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Freshman running back Knowshon Moreno continued his strong play with 101 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 22 carries. The Georgia defense gave Auburn QB Brandon Cox fits with four interceptions.

Georgia should be out for some revenge in this game after losing to Kentucky 24-20 as a 6.5-point favorite last season. Stafford threw three interceptions for Georgia in that loss, while Woodson had a pair of touchdown passes and two picks. Georgia is a 7.5-point home favorite in Saturday’s game.

Boston College (18) at Clemson (15)

The Eagles went from bad to worse last week, as they dropped their second straight in a 42-35 loss to Maryland as a 6.5-point favorite. The loss dropped Boston College into second place in the ACC Atlantic and another loss this week would hand the division title to Clemson. Last week versus Maryland, Eagles quarterback Matt Ryan completed 33-of-56 passes for 421 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Running back Andre Callender was kept out of the end zone while rushing for 56 yards on 12 carries and catching eight passes for 92 yards. Ryan Purves caught 10 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

The Tigers reeled off their fourth straight win last week after knocking off Wake Forest 44-10 as a 9.5-point favorite. Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper turned in a solid performance while completing 27-of-35 passes for 266 yards with three touchdown passes and a TD run. James Davis rushed for 67 yards on 21 carries, while C.J. Spiller rushed for 54 yards on only eight carries and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Aaron Kelly led all Clemson receivers with 10 receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Last season Boston College and Clemson engaged in a tight double-overtime battle that the Eagles narrowly won 34-33 as a 1-point underdog. In Saturday’s important rematch the Tigers are an 8.5-point favorite.

Makin’ Canadian bacon: CFL divisional finals
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts (-6 1/2, 45 1/2)
        Sunday, Nov. 18, 1 p.m. ET

Last Sunday's conditions at Canad Inns Stadium weren't ideal for watching football. It was windy, cold and the Blue Lightning dancers were bundled up like they just came back from an afternoon caribou hunt on the tundra. The last thing the shivering Winnipeg fans needed was the Bombers' season boiling down to a Troy Westwood field goal attempt with the wind howling around him.

But the 40-year-old with the 60 percent success rate this season made it when it counted and sent the Alouettes back to Montreal. His reward is a trip to the Rogers Centre, where the wind will be non-existent and the Blue Thunder cheerleaders will show a little more leg. (I'm not kidding you, that's the Argos dance team name. Blue Lightning sounds sexy. Blue Thunder somehow sounds ... heavy).

Toronto has been on an unbelievable run in the second half of the season, both straight-up and against the spread. The Boatmen even posted a pair of 10-point wins over Winnipeg later in the season, in Weeks 13 and 18. Toronto only managed three offensive touchdowns in those two wins, however, and two of those were short drives set up by the defense or special teams.

The Argos scored 41 points against the Riders in the regular-season finale, but that was a game that meant absolutely nothing to Saskatchewan. You have to go back more than a month to find a good offensive performance by the Boatmen in a game that mattered to both teams.

Luckily Toronto has both motivation and time on its side. The Grey Cup is at the Rogers Centre this year and 2007 might be the last for head coach Michael Clemons to roam the sidelines. The Argos also had a bye week to sort out their offensive questions.

That makes it a little easier to lay the points because I have no doubts at all when it comes to Toronto's defense or special teams. The Argonauts won 14 paydays in 18 games this season because of those two units so I won't look the other way this Sunday.

By the way, just because the Argos cheerleaders picked a bad name doesn't make them bad people. Their page on the Argos website is definitely worth a visit.

        Pick: Argos -6 1/2

Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Lions (-7 1/2, 55)
        Sunday, Nov. 18, 4:30 p.m. ET

Another Prairie team loses its elements edge as the Riders make their way to BC Place this Sunday. They might not mind playing indoors, though. Saskatchewan walked away from Vancouver with wins in both the preseason and the regular season.

The Lions, however, are likely to have the comfort edge in BC Place on Sunday. It was the site of their Western final wins over the Riders both last year and in 2004. The crowd noise in the domed stadium, whether genuine or piped-in, was a huge issue for Saskatchewan a year ago. So coaches blasted noise into this week's practices to recreate the atmosphere they expect in Vancouver on Sunday.

It all adds to the teams' rivalry. The Roughriders and Lions really don't like each other. It’s not hate created by hype, it's hate created by the league's two most physical teams playing each other three times per season. And I love it. What are the late afternoon kickoffs in the NFL on Sunday? Washington at Dallas? Chicago at Seattle? Ha! Don’t even bother with that tripe. Rider Pride taking on the defending champs is the game to watch.

I don't like laying more than a touchdown with the Leos for a couple of reasons. For starters, they haven't played a big game in weeks. They took the regular-season finale against Calgary off and their preceding three games were against non-playoff teams. BC went 4-0 SU in those games but didn’t look convincing in any of them. Maybe they were coasting, but it's hard to jump back into top gear if you've been coasting since Oct. 5, the date of their last meaningful win over a playoff team.

I'm also not huge on Jarious Jackson to light up a quality CFL defense like that of the Riders. I think BC will win and Jackson will manage the game, I just don't think Saskatchewan is ready to be bowled over.

The Riders' offense might once again struggle with the noise, but not as much as it'll struggle with BC's playmakers on defense. Going the other way, I see Joe Smith being the star of the game as the Leos control the clock and win the field position battle. It should be a great game, just a lower-scoring one than the teams' scoring averages would suggest.

        Pick: under 55

        Last week: 0-2

        Year to date: 35-39

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's NBA bets

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Washington Wizards (-5 1/2, 193 1/2)

Washington trounced the Indiana Pacers at the Verizon Center last Wednesday. It looks like the Wizards could do the same Saturday against the Blazers.

Portland lost its first three road outings by a combined 36 points. The Blazers are averaging a dismal 94 points and are allowing more than 97 points per game. Washington is scoring more than 100 points per game in its last three contests.

                Pick: Wizards -5 1/2

                Seattle SuperSonics at Charlotte Bobcats (-8 1/2, 196 1/2)

The Bobcats are 3-2 both straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in Charlotte. That includes a blowout win over the Heat. Bobcats center Emeka Okafor, who has been dominant in the post, is leading the team in rebounds (12.1), steals (1.8) and blocks (1.8).

The Bobcats are holding opponents to less than 96 points per game on 46 percent shooting. The Sonics are scoring less than 98 points per contest and are shooting an atrocious 43 percent from the field.

                Pick: Sonics +8 1/2

Utah Jazz at Indiana Pacers (+6, 202)

Utah is averaging a league-high 109 points per game on 49 percent shooting, second best in the league.

Carlos Boozer is leading the Jazz with more than 25 points and 12 rebounds per contest. Boozer should dominate inside against the shorthanded Pacers.

The Pacers are allowing more than 102 points per outing. They are also shooting a meager 41 percent from the field and 34 percent from the three-point line. They could also be without low-post threat Troy Murphy, who has been suffering from flu-like symptoms.

                Pick: Utah -6

Miami Heat at New Jersey Nets (-2, 178 1/2)

The good news is that Dwyane Wade has returned to the starting lineup. That means the Heat should at least be competitive against the shorthanded Nets.

With Wade and Ricky Davis on the court at the same time, Shaquille O'Neal should see less double teams. O'Neal is scoring less than 15 points per contest this season without Wade in the lineup.

The Nets, averaging less than 88 points per outing, will be without star Vince Carter who suffered a high ankle sprain last week against the Celtics.

                Pick: Miami +2

New Orleans Hornets at Minnesota Timberwolves (+6 1/2, 190)

Thanks to third-year starter Chris Paul, the Hornets are a spectacular 4-1 SU and 3-1-1 ATS on the road. Paul is leading New Orleans in scoring (18.6) and assists (10.6). He also leads the team with three steals per contest. New Orleans is limiting opponents to less than 89 points per contest.

The Timberwolves lost their first three games at home by a combined 18 points. They are also allowing more than 102 points per outing and scoring less than 92 points per game.

                Pick: Hornets +6

Atlanta Hawks at Milwaukee Bucks (Odds not yet released)

The Hawks, 1-2 ATS on the road, could be without starters Josh Smith and Acie Law.

The Bucks are 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS at the Bradley Center. They are also scoring more than 97 points per game at home, five points above their season average. Bucks star Michael Redd scored an impressive 31 points and Andrew Bogut grabbed 12 rebounds in Wednesday's home win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

                Pick: Bucks

Phoenix Suns at Houston Rockets (+6, 195 1/2)

The Suns have been blazing since a 105-96 road loss to the Hawks. Phoenix is 4-1 ATS on the road, which includes back-to-back road wins against the Heat and Magic. Phoenix is averaging more than 107 points per outing. It is also 12-2 ATS in its last 14 tilts against the Rockets.

The Rockets will be without scoring leader Tracy McGrady, who is averaging more than 26 points per contest. Houston is also 0-7 ATS in its last seven meetings with the Suns at the Toyota Center.

                Pick: Suns -6

Memphis Grizzlies at Dallas Mavericks (-13, 210)

The Mavericks are 4-0 both SU and ATS at home. They have trounced their opponents by a combined 58 points, which includes a 13-point victory over the Spurs. That shouldn't be the case on Saturday.

Memphis a meager 1-3 SU on the road, but is 2-2 ATS. Former second-overall pick Darko Milicic is averaging more than eight rebounds and 11 points in his first season in Memphis. The Grizzlies could catch the Mavs sleeping on Saturday after Friday's nationally televised victory over the defending champs.

                Pick: Grizzlies +13

New York Knicks at Denver Nuggets (Odds not yet released)

The Knicks have yet to win on the road. They could also be without Mardy Collins, Zach Randolph and Ronaldo Balkman.

The Nuggets are second in the league in scoring, averaging more than 107 points per game on 47 percent shooting. They also have a strong frontcourt defender in veteran center Marcus Camby, who leads the team in rebounds (13.9) and blocks (3.1). Denver is also limiting teams to 44 percent shooting.

                Pick: Nuggets

Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Clippers (+1, 191)

The Bulls have been major disappointments this season, going 0-3 both SU and ATS on the road. However, they could register their first spread road victory Saturday versus Clippers.

Chicago fell to the sizzling Suns on Friday despite a 23-point outing from Luol Deng and a 24-point showing from Ben Gordon. The Bulls are limiting teams to 44 percent shooting, while the Clippers are shooting less than 43 percent from the field.

                Pick: Bulls -1

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL wagers

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (+130, 6)

The Sens have dominated almost every team they have played so far this year and no club has felt the wrath as badly as the Leafs. Ottawa has beaten Toronto three times already this season improving to 15-2-2 in the last 19 meetings between the inter-provincial rivals. Jason Spezza has flourished against the Leafs, scoring 35 points in 24 career games against them.

                    Pick: Senators -150

Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks (-160, 5)

The Ducks and Sharks both enter tonight's game on winning streaks. Anaheim has won its last three while San Jose has won its last four. During the winning streaks the Sharks have scored an average of 4.75 goals per game and the Ducks an average of 4.33.

                    Pick: Over five

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-115, 5 1/2)

The Rangers recovered from a slow start by winning eight of their last nine games including a 4-2 victory over the Pens last week. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has just two wins in its last eight games. New York owes much of the success to the play of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. The Swedish sensation is sporting a 1.71 goals against average and has four shutouts through just 18 starts this season.

                    Pick: Rangers -105

                            UC-Riverside at Gonzaga
The Zags showed a stifling defense to go along with their usual high-scoring offense to down Idaho (80-43) on Tuesday. It was the fewest points allowed by Gonzaga since 2001. That's a nice change for Mark Few's team, which has allowed an average of over 70 points in the last two seasons. A big reason has been the play of freshman Austin Daye, who has eight of the team's 14 blocks through the first two games to go along with his team-leading 38 points. Gonzaga will look to keep the roll going today against a UC-Riverside team that has started out 0-3 after going 7-24 last year. The Zags look like a good pick to cover (-24 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Gonzaga favored by 33 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Gonzaga (-24 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                                Seattle at Charlotte
The Sonics are suddenly showing a spark as they've won two straight on the road, including last night's 126-123 double-overtime win over Atlanta. Kevin Durant hit the game-winner at the buzzer and has proven in the early-going to be worthy of his No. 2 pick in the draft as he's averaged 20.1 points per game. Durant's heroics overshadowed a breakout game from Damien Wilkins, who finished with a career-best 41 points. The Sonics will carry that momentum into Charlotte tonight to face a Bobcat team that has dropped four of its last six. Seattle looks like a good underdog pick (+8) according to Dunkel, which has Charlotte favored by just 3. Dunkel Pick: Seattle (+8). Here are all of today's games.
