    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- How in the name of Pete Rose does Akinori Iwamura not get at least one freakin’ third-place vote for AL Rookie of the Year? Hell, relief pitcher Soria on the Royals got a third-place vote. Individual awards aren’t important, but this just shows people’s ignorance.

-- Rumors out of Kansas State had freshman hoop phenom Michael Beasley going for 42 points, 12 boards in a closed scrimmage vs good Marquette team. K-State already sold out all their home games this season.

-- Buffalo Bills got laughed at for giving punter Moorman big money last winter, but they’ve only lost field position battle in one game this season, big part of why they’re 5-4, a very surprising 5-4.

-- Was surprised to learn Grady Little made only $600,000 managing the Dodgers this year. With $4.3M Joe Torre now in charge, will LA be expected to play seven times better?

-- Chargers were outscored 49-3 in second half of their last three games. Their special team have four TDs in last three games.

-- Green Bay was 4-8 LY, finished 8-8, gaining momentum for this year, so important for non-contenders to play hard rest of way, setting stage for surprising 2008. In the NFL, it can happen.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13............

If you don’t have at least a .500 record, you can’t get ranked.

      13) Redskins —I really like Jason Campbell; he is so much better than he was in college. Skins are weird team though- very hard to figure.

      12) Lions —They’ve forced 28 turnovers in nine games, an awful lot, but they’re 1-3 when they don’t win turnover battle, with losses by 35-31-10 points.

      11) Titans —Vince Young is the new Michael Vick; hopefully, he has more productive hobbies.

      10) Bills —Have lost field position battle once in nine games, in first game vs NE; are very tough at home, but usually get hammered by Patriots. Sunday night game this week is fun.

      9) Giants —Big Blue has started at least 5-2 in all four years of Coughlin era, but he hasn’t won them a playoff game yet; this might be his last chance.

      8) Chargers —Not sure if/how all the disruption during the fires hurt this team, but they’ve been outscored 49-3 in second half of last three games. Rivers looks terrible, but the special teams are great.

      7) Browns —Brady Quinn, meet Matt Schaub; he’ll be prime trade bait after ’08 season, when Anderson is entrenched as Cleveland’s QB, just like Schaub was in Atlanta last season.

      6) Jaguars —They play good defense, they run ball, and Quinn Gray hasn’t been horrible. Del Rio is very good coach, just like Fisher—both USC products.

      5) Packers —It really is fun watching Favre play; you’re watching a living legend write the final chapters in what has been a truly fantastic career.

      4) Steelers — Rivers and E. Manning both got taken ahead of Big Ben; at least Chargers got draft picks in addition to Philip Rivers (one of them was Merriman). Luckily for the Steel City, Giants got snookered by Archie Manning/AJ Smith.

      3) Cowboys — If Dallas wins the Super Bowl, a whole new generation of annoying little TO imitators will be spawned, which is why this (please) can never happen, since youth coaching would become even more thankless.

      2) Colts— Manning threw six picks Sunday night, but after game, I admired him, since he fought through that and gave his team legitimate chance to win game. Need to get healthy.

      1) Patriots — Anything less than 19-0 is a disappointment.

Akron Zips at Miami-Ohio Redhawks (ESPN2 | 7:30 PM ET)

Another MAC Match-up is set for Wednesday night, when the Akron Zips travel to Miami-Ohio to take on the Redhawks. Akron’s offense is still last in the MAC with 323 yards per game, but did produce 419 yards with 5 TDs last week in a 48-42 win over Ohio. The Zips inexperienced offensive line is getting better each week, as RB Alex Allen gained a team-high 96 yards and RB Bryan Williams finished with 80 yards in that Ohio win. "Our kids will play hard at all times, and I fully expect them to play hard in this game," Akron’s Coach J.D. Brookhart. EDGE: AKRON
The Miami-Ohio Redhawks are in the driver’s seat for the MAC title. They just need to win the last two games of the schedule and they will face Central Michigan in the MAC for the title on Dec. 1. The Redhawks are 3-1 in the MAC East (5-5 overall), and a win over the Zips would put them in pole position to take the title. “We are not overlooking this improved Akron team, as we need this win,” Miami coach Shane Montgomery. EDGE: MIAMI-OHIO
In last season’s meeting, Akron defeated Miami-Ohio 24-13 at the Rubber Bowl. With the improved rushing attack the Zips will keep it on the ground with running-backs Allen and Williams, as the Redhawks rushing defense is ranked 76th in the country, allowing 174 yards per game. EDGE: AKRON
Miami-Ohio will receive a huge boost for this game, as Senior RB Austin Sykes is expected back in the lineup and is close to 100 percent. He picked up an ankle injury in October, and leads the team with 438 rushing yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. The Redhawks will rely heavily on Sykes after season-ending injuries to running backs Brandon Murphy and Andre Bratton. Miami-Ohio is 3-0 in the last five games when Austin Sykes has 10 or more carries, and he is expected to be the No.1 back Wednesday night. EDGE: MIAMI-OHIO
Six of the last eight contests between these two teams have gone over the total, and both will look to focus their offenses on the ground. Miami-Ohio’s rushing defense has already been stated as ranked 76th in the country giving up 174 rushing yards per game, and Akron’s is even worse allowing an average of 183 rushing yards per contest. EDGE: OVER
Akron is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games following a bye week.
Akron is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 road games.
Miami-Ohio is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games against a losing team.
Miami-Ohio is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 home games as a favorite.
Home team is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.

                    Wednesday's College Basketball

                    Top Five Games
Rhode Island beat Brown last three years, by 4-10-4 points, but Brown covered all three. Bruins have three starters back from 11-18 team that was 6-8 in Ivy LY (5th). Brown won 74-55 in its opener, at Eastern Michigan, then lost 72-57 at Michigan, game they trailed by 16 at half. Rams waxed Florida Atlantic 104-61 in its opener.

Oklahoma State goes on road, faces North Texas club that has three starters back from 23-11 team, but lost four players from a Sun Belt title team. Cowboys have three starters back from last year's 22-13 team that faded late, going 7-12 in its last 19 games losing in first round of NIT. OSU is picked 10th in the Big 12.

Iowa State coach McDermott faced Bradley a lot when he was at Northern Iowa; his Cyclones have three starters back from a 15-16 team LY- they beat pair of stiffs by 14,10 in lame tourney at Hilton Coliseum to open season. Bradley got upset Saturday at Ill-Chicago; they have two starters back from LY's 22-13 club

UTEP is trying to play like Memphis/Pepperdine, penetrating, skipping for 3's- they're getting pieces in place, but aren't quite there yet. Texas A&M has three starters back from LY's 27-7 team, but has new coach, new PG- they lost to Memphis by one point in NCAAs last March, so they've seen UTEP's offense.

Davidson is live dog anytime they take floor, even against Tar Heel squad that has three starters back from 31-7 squad and is #1 team in country right now. Davidson has all five starters off LY's 29-5 squad back; they're odds-on to win in Southern Conf, and scheduled Duke, UCLA, UNC to get ready for March tilts.

                    Rest of the Card

-- Ball State is in chaos, changes coaching in August; they lost opener at home to Butler by 16, appear headed for bad season. UW-Milwaukee tossed its top scorer; they were 9-22 last year.

-- Butler (-9.5) lost 72-64 at Indiana State LY; Bulldogs won first game this year by 16 at Ball State. Sycamores have four starters back from LY, but have new coach- they're picked last in MVC.

-- Detroit upset Kent State at home Saturday; now they are off to St Louis, who are already playing 4th game under Majerus (2-1, lost at Pitt Sunday); SLU has good team, won 20 games in 2006-7, some people didn't think coaching change was needed.

-- Yale (+16.5) lost 78-69 at UMass LY; Bulldogs are of a group of teams expected to contend for Ivy title. UMass lost 75-68 at Northern Iowa, after winning first two games in tourney at UNI

-- New Mexico State has two of better guys waiting to become eligible; they lost at Ohio, Duke, now are favored to beat Davis squad that is in first year at D-I; they went 12-36 vs Big West in transitional phase to this level of play.

-- Cal has some injury issues early on. Southern Miss is slowly getting better under Eustachy; they've got four starters back from LY's 20-11 team, but usually play easier schedule early on.

-- Michigan State waxed Chicago State in a glorified scrimmage last night; UL-Monroe, who lost 107-78 at Kansas Friday, won 60-53 vs D-II school last night. Actually, Northern Michigan team they beat is alma mater of Tom Izzo/Steve Mariucci.

-- Utah beat High Point last night; Utes have four starters ack but new coach; they're picked #5 in down MWC. Washington has three starters back from LY, but Appleby is hurt early on, so that will hurt their outside shooting.

-- Princeton (-6) won 57-46 at horrible Iona team LY; Gaels have new coach, three starters back from 2-28 team- they're going to try and play fast, so interesting contrast vs patient Princeton.

-- Illinois State has four starters back, new coach; they're a #5 choice in MVC hat might slip a little this year. SE Missouri St has four starters back- they lost opener 90-59 to tough Xavier.

-- Northern Colorado is in second year of D-I ball; they split a pair over weekend at Air Force. Iowa has new coach; they've got three starters back from 17-14 that went 9-7 in Big 11 LY.

-- BYU won 74-34 at Long Beach Friday; they've needed OT to beat Idaho State LY, taking Bengals 84-78 (-16.5). Cougars have two starters back from 25-9 team, are still picked first in MWC.

NBA today - Wednesday, November 14

                            SCOREBOARD
                            Wednesday, Nov. 14

Utah at Toronto (7 p.m. EST). The Jazz, winners of four straight, face the Raptors in the start of a three-game road trip.

                            STARS
                            Tuesday

-Paul Pierce, Celtics, had 31 points and 11 rebounds in a 101-86 victory over Indiana.

-Amare Stoudemire, Suns, had 26 points and 12 rebounds in a 113-102 victory over New York.

-Tony Parker, Spurs, scored 26 points and had nine assists in San Antonio's 107-92 win over the Lakers.

-LaMarcus Aldridge, Trail Blazers, had 22 points and 10 rebounds in a 102-94 victory over Detroit.

                            GOING?

Stephon Marbury has left the New York Knicks and there is no word on when, or even if, he might rejoin the team. Marbury was absent from the team's morning shootaround, and failed to show up when the Knicks played the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Marbury's absence followed a story in Tuesday's New York Daily News indicating the Knicks were trying to reduce his role or get rid of him. A trade seems unlikely, because Marbury is scheduled to earn $42 million over the next two seasons. The Knicks lost to Phoenix 113-102.

                            CELTIC PRIDE

Paul Pierce scored 31 points, and Boston beat Indiana 101-86 on Tuesday night to remain unbeaten. Boston (6-0) matched its best start since the 1987-88 season. Boston still is chasing its best start, 14 straight wins to begin the 1957-58 season.

                            WINLESS IN SEATTLE

Rashard Lewis scored 22 points against his former team Tuesday night, and Orlando beat Seattle 103-76, handing the SuperSonics their league-worst eighth straight loss to start the season. The Sonics have not won since April 7 of last season, when Lewis was still on their side and went for 35 points against the Utah Jazz. It is the worst start in franchise history, surpassing an 0-6 streak in 1969-70.

                            INJURED

Bucks forward Michael Ruffin will miss four to six weeks with a broken left wrist. Ruffin was injured in the second half of Sunday's 113-88 loss in San Antonio when he tried to block a shot.

                            SNAPPED

LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Portland beat the Pistons 102-94, snapping a four-game losing streak at the Rose Garden against Detroit. The last Trail Blazers' win over the Pistons at home in March 2003. The Blazers have not won at home against Detroit since former Blazers forward Rasheed Wallace has been with the Pistons.

                            STRONG IN DEFEAT

Tracy McGrady scored 41 points in Houston's 105-99 loss to Memphis on Tuesday night. ... Andre Iguodala had 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in Philadelphia's 99-84 loss to Dallas.

                            SPEAKING

''He passed up three shots early in the game. I had to remind him he's the Microwave, not the Toaster.''-Dallas coach Avery Johnson on starting Jason Terry in the second half after Terry passed up some open first-half shots in the Mavericks' 99-84 win over Philadelphia. Terry responded by scoring 12 of his 25 points in the third quarter.

Wednesday's key NBA matchup betting notes

                              Utah Jazz at Toronto Raptors (+1 1/2, 205 1/2)
The Utah Jazz look to continue their stellar play on offense and extend their winning streak to five games Wednesday when they visit the Toronto Raptors in a matchup between division winners from last season.

Indiana Pacers at Washington Wizards (-6, 202)
Getting their first win of the season helped the Washington Wizards avoid one dubious franchise record. The Wizards hope they can build off of that victory so they can avert setting another.

Charlotte Bobcats at Atlanta Hawks (-5, 187 1/2)
The Bobcats will be trying for their fourth straight win against the Hawks when they visit Atlanta on Wednesday.

                              Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers (-3 1/2, 194 1/2)
The Cavaliers also hope to have guard Larry Hughes for a full game Wednesday. He thought he was fouled on a missed 3-pointer in the first half Monday, and was given two technical fouls and ejected by referee Bill Spooner.

New Jersey Nets at Boston Celtics (-10 1/2, 184 1/2)
The road team has dominated this series recently, taking the last five matchups. The Nets have won their last three visits to Boston since a 99-96 defeat Jan. 20, 2006.

Seattle SuperSonics at Miami Heat (N/A)
The Heat have won four straight against the SuperSonics, who haven't won in the series since Jan. 9, 2005.

Memphis Grizzlies at Milwaukee Bucks (-6 1/2, 205)
The Bucks swept the 2006-07 season series with the Grizzlies, posting a 100-94 home victory on Dec. 8. Milwaukee has won seven of its last 10 home games against Memphis.

                              Philadelphia 76ers at New Orleans Hornets (-8 1/2, 187 1/2)
The Hornets look to match the best start in franchise history when they conclude their season series with the struggling 76ers on Wednesday night.

Sacramento Kings at Minnesota Timberwolves (-3, 194)
Artest averaged 18.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.8 steals in four games against Minnesota last season as the Kings and Wolves split the season series.

                              L.A. Lakers at Houston Rockets (-7 1/2, 199)
The Rockets look to win four straight against the Lakers for the first time in more than 12 years when the teams meet at the Toyota Center on Wednesday night in a rematch of their season opener.

Portland Trailblazers at Denver Nuggets (-10, 211 1/2)
The Nuggets have outscored the Trail Blazers by an average margin of more than 12 points during the eight-game winning streak.

New York Knicks at L.A. Clippers (-7, 200)
Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy is two victories from tying Jack Ramsay's franchise record of 158 set from 1972-76.

Detroit Pistons at Golden State Warriors (+2 1/2, 207)
After reaching the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons last spring, the Golden State Warriors are off to a rough start this fall.
