Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets

Toronto Maple Leafs at Buffalo Sabres (-140, 6)

The Maple Leafs and Sabres renew their cross-border rivalry from the bottom of the Northeast standings.

The Leafs, who have surrendered 62 goals this season, have the unfortunate distinction of leading the NHL in goals against. However, both teams are managing to put the puck in the net. Toronto ranks fourth in the league at 3.31 goals per game, while Buffalo lies seventh at 3.07 goals per contest.

Both teams sport records that trend towards the over (Leafs 10-5, Sabres 6-4) and Toronto is expecting two players to return tonight who could boost a weak power play. Forward Darcy Tucker and defenseman Bryan McCabe should be back in uniform after missing time with injuries.

The teams combined for nine goals in their last meeting on Oct. 15, a 5-4 overtime victory for Buffalo, and the over is 16-7-2 in their last 25 games overall.

              Pick: Over six goals

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings (-220, 5 1/2)

The Red Wings have won eight straight games behind goaltenders Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek, but Detroit will host the upstart Blue Jackets tonight and the best goalie in the league to this point in the season.

Pascal Leclaire leads the league in goals against average (1.12), save percentage (.957) and shutouts (five). The Jackets have lost two of three games, but backup Fredrik Norrena was in net for both losses. In fact, Norrena has accounted for four of the CBJ's six losses this season.

Dominik Hasek is expected to start for Detroit, but he has been sidelined by a hip injury. This will be his first start since Oct. 24, and unlike Leclaire, Hasek was in net for all of the Wings' losses this season.

Detroit looked shaky in Wednesday's 3-2 shootout win against the Nashville Predators as -242 home favorites.

              Pick: Columbus +180

Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks (+100, 5 1/2)

The Canucks are 1-6 at GM Place this season and have dropped four straight at home since beating Edmonton 4-1 on Oct. 13.

Colorado rolls into Vancouver with six wins in seven games. Their one loss was to the Canucks, but the road team has won each of the last four meetings between these teams.

Vancouver's Roberto Luongo's struggles at home have highlighted his team's troubles there. Luongo has lost his last four at home and is 1-6 with a 3.37 GAA.

              Pick: Colorado -120
