    NHL – Matchup Notes
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Wednesday's key NHL matchup notes

Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres (-160, 6)

Both teams are struggling as they are amid nine-game stretches of division play. While the Bruins (7-5-1) have lost back-to-back games to division-leading Ottawa since beating Buffalo, the Sabres (5-7-1) enter this contest looking to avoid a season-high fourth straight loss.

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-130, 6)

The Flyers' awful start included five losses to Pittsburgh, which went on to sweep the season series for the first time. The Penguins scored at least three goals in every meeting, and scored at least five in five of those matchups.

Florida Panthers at Tampa Bay Lightning (-135, 6)

Florida has beaten the Lightning twice in three meetings this season to improve to 13-5-1 in the series since the start of 2005-06. The Panthers, though, are just 4-4-1 at Tampa during that stretch.

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-260, 5 1/2)

The Red Wings (11-2-1) try for their eighth straight victory as they return home Wednesday to take on Nashville (7-7-0) for the first time this season.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks (-120, 5)

Rick Nash and Jiri Novotny each scored twice in Columbus' 7-4 victory at Chicago on Oct. 23. The Blue Jackets have won four of their last six meetings with the Blackhawks, including two of three at the United Center.

Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche (-260, 5 1/2)

The Avalanche are 5-1-1 in their last seven meetings with the Oilers, although they've dropped four of the last five matchups at the Pepsi Center.

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-220, 5)

Phoenix opened this season with a 3-2 home win over St. Louis on Oct. 4, but has dropped six in a row there since including a 5-2 loss to the Ducks on Saturday. Anaheim got a goal and two assists from Mathieu Schneider in his second game after suffering a broken during the preseason.

Dallas Stars at San Jose Sharks (-150, 5)

San Jose's top-line center Joe Thornton had two assists Saturday, giving him two goals and four assists during a four-game point streak. He has a goal and eight assists in his last six games against Dallas.

        LA Clippers at Indiana
Indiana missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 1997 and has done a good job of erasing that memory with a 3-0 start to this season. Danny Granger has been a big part of the strong start, earning Player of the Week honors in the East with a 22.7 point average to go with his 8.7 boards. But Granger and the Pacers run into another surprisingly hot team tonight in the Clippers. LA was supposed to be down because of injuries to Elton Brand and Shaun Livingston, but has come out of the box with a 3-0 start of its own, including last night's 97-91 win at Chicago behind Cuttino Mobley's 33 points. LA looks like a good underdog pick (+5 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Clips favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: LA Clippers (+5 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Henrik Zetterberg has at least one point in all 14 of the Red Wings' games this season and has a league-leading 24 this season.

          STARS
          Tuesday

-Todd White, Thrashers, scored the 100th goal of his career 1:34 left in overtime to give Atlanta a 2-1 victory over Washington.

-Martin Gerber, Senators, made 30 saves in Ottawa's 5-1 win against Toronto.

          STRONG START

The Ottawa Senators set a team record with their eighth straight win, 5-1 over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Ottawa is off to the best start in NHL history through 14 games with a 13-1-0 mark and a record total of 26 points.

          ROAD WOES

The New York Islanders scored three goals in the final period snapping the New York Rangers' winning streak at four with a 3-2 victory Tuesday night. The Rangers fell to 0-5-1 on the road.

          SLUMPING

Todd White scored the 100th goal of his career with 3:26 left in overtime to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 2-1 victory over Washington on Tuesday night. The Capitals lost their 10th in 12 games after starting the season with three straight victories.

          REJECTED

Steve Moore has rejected an approximately $350,000 offer to settle the player's $15 million lawsuit against Todd Bertuzzi and the former owner of the Vancouver Canucks, according to recently filed documents. The lawsuit, currently in the discovery stage, stems from an ugly incident during a March 8, 2004, game in Vancouver when Bertuzzi, then of the Canucks, attacked Moore, who was playing for the Colorado Avalanche.

          SPEAKING

''I think that our mental sharpness left something to be desired over the course of three periods. We weren't as crisp as we needed to be, weren't as precise as we needed to be.'' - Rangers coach Tom Renney after a 3-2 loss to the Islanders on Tuesday night.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-130, 6)

This is the first meeting of these teams this season and the Flyers are out to redeem their 0-for-8 record against the Penguins that lingers from last year. Their last two meetings resulted in shootouts and their last five played over a 6 1/2-goal total. Sidney Crosby used the Flyers to sharpen his skills, tallying seven goals and eight assists in those wins.

The Penguins have abandoned their high-scoring ways of last season. They've only played over 6 1/2-goals five times in 14 games and haven't managed to win more than three games in a row. They blanked the Devils 5-0 Monday and dropped their previous two, playing under the total in all three.

Thanks to a few new key additions, namely Daniel Briere who has contributed 15 points in 13 games, the Flyers got off to a considerably better start than last season. They went 6-1 in their first seven games and are 4-2 on their current eight-game road trip. This season's Flyers are averaging 3.3 goals per game.

            Pick: under

Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres (-160, 6)

The Bruins squeaked out a 4-3 shootout victory when they faced off against the Sabres Nov. 1 and cashed in as home underdogs. Can they pull off two upsets in a row?

Chuck Kobasew leads the Bruins in scoring with six goals, followed by Marco Sturm with five. Aside from these wingers, Boston doesn't pack much firepower. What they do have going for them is goalie Tim Thomas who is fifth in the league with a 1.65 GAA in nine games.

The Sabres are without Tim Connolly, who shared the lead with Brian Campbell for the most points with 12. Jaroslav Spacek is questionable tonight with a shoulder injury after scoring four goals in six games this season.

            Pick: Bruins +140

                  Ohio at Akron
The Zips have shown just that lately as they've lost three straight to Temple, Buffalo and Bowling Green to drop out of the MAC title chase. Trouble at QB has been the main problem and Akron will likely split time tonight between Carlton Jackson and Chris Jacquemain, the latter of whom returns from a one-game suspension. Making matters more difficult is the fact that Ohio comes in one of the hotter MAC teams right now with two straight wins and a chance to clinch the division title. But this will be the Bobcats' third game in 12 days, the last two on the road. And Ohio has stumbled away from home, dropping earlier contests at Buffalo (31-10) and Toledo (43-40). The Zips look like a decent home underdog pick (+3) according to Dunkel, which has Akron favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Akron (+3).

                    Morgan State at Connecticut
Connecticut is looking to bounce back from a 2006-07 campaign that saw the Huskies start out 11-0, but finish 12th in the Big East. For better or for worse, Jim Calhoun has most of the roster back, including his most-consistent player in forward Jeff Adrien and a big-time shot-blocker in center Hasheem Thabeet. Guards A.J. Price and Craig Austrie also have a year under their belts and should show improvement. Just how much will begin to unfold tonight as the Huskies host Morgan State. While the Bears (13-18) did show improvement last season under new coach Todd Bozeman, taking on UConn is a big leap. The Huskies look like a good pick to cover the line (-26) according to Dunkel, which has Connecticut favored by 37. Dunkel Pick: Connecticut (-26). Here are all of today's games.

What bettors need to know: Ohio at Akron

Ohio Bobcats at Akron Zips (+3)

                            Bobcats still in the chase

A four-game losing streak in the middle of Ohio’s season threatened to derail the entire year. The defending MAC East champion has since clawed its way back into contention for a bowl game with two straight wins. The Bobcats are now back at .500 in both conference play (3-3) and overall (5-5) and are playing their best football at the right time.

"After we went through that stretch there, the coaches came in and said 'Just forget about these last six games. It's a new season, a new approach,'" Ohio linebacker Lee Renfro told The Athens Messenger. "So yeah, it's been kind of like a new season. Every since we came through that as a team, guys have started stepping up and (doing) what they were asked to do."

Even with a win on Wednesday against Akron, there’s no guarantee the Bobcats will retain their title. But with three MAC teams locked at 5-5 overall, two more wins for Ohio could be enough for it claim one of the conference’s three automatic bowl spots.

Ohio’s success this season depends a lot on results from other games, but head coach Frank Solich is focusing on what his own team needs to do on the field.

"I've found out that rooting doesn't work," he told the Messenger. "What's going to happen is going to happen. The only thing you can control is what you're all about in terms of playing the game."

Ohio’s final two games of the schedule are among its most difficult – they follow this week’s trip to Akron with a home game against division-leading Miami of Ohio.

Akron offense in need of zip

Akron’s inability to get its offense going has cost it dearly this season. The Zips are 3-6 overall (2-3 in the MAC) and a loss Wednesday would end their already slim chances of challenging for the East Division title.

The Zips are last in their conference in total offense, averaging 312.4 yards per game. They are putting up just 19.3 points per contest and haven’t been able to make the big plays when they needed to.

''We have not had a lot of big-hit plays and part of that is by design,'' Akron coach J.D. Brookhart told the Akron Beacon Journal. ''We want to consistently move the ball, but you still have to take some chances and look for those opportunities, and we have not made those plays.

“Guys making six to eight plays a game makes a big difference, and we're not making them.''

One of the Zips’ biggest problems this season is red-zone conversion. They are 10th in the 13-team MAC in that area, converting on 19-of-27 opportunities – with just nine TDs.

''I think in the red zone right now, we've got just nine touchdowns,'' Brookhart added. ''And if you expand the red zone a little further, we've had a tougher time scoring.''

Luckily, the defense has picked up the slack to help Akron stay competitive. The ‘D’ is third in the MAC East in total yards per game (400.1) and first against the pass (209.9 per contest).

                            Record-breaking rusher

If the Bobcats manage to turn their season around and make a bowl game, they can thank senior running back Kalvin McRae for getting them there. McRae is already Ohio’s all-time leader with 4,177 yards and is sixth in the nation with 16 touchdowns this season.

“Kalvin is the kind of back that gets the yardage that’s not there,” Solich told the Athens Messenger when asked about his star player. “Some backs, if you block a play for four yards, you’ll get four yards. With Kalvin if you block a play for four yards, you’ll get 10. That’s a great way of keeping drives alive.”

McRae has the chance to break two more school records before the end of the year. With 858 career carries, he’s just 27 shy of Kareem Wilson’s 885 mark – set in 1998. With 47 career TDs, he’s only two away from tying Wilson in that category.

In his most recent game, a 23-7 win over Temple, McRae ran for 151 yards on 28 attempts with one touchdown. Fellow running back Vince Davis, who is expected to take over as the main rusher next season, added 47 yards and a touchdown.

Overall, Ohio ranks third in the MAC with 164.1 rushing yards per contest.

                            Head to head

The Zips have won, and covered, in three of the last four meetings between the teams. They haven’t lost to Ohio at home since 1997, covering in four of the five home games since then.

Four of the last five contests between Ohio and Akron have gone under the total.
