Pick ‘n’ roll: Monday’s best NBA bets

Houston Rockets at Dallas Mavericks (n/a)
The undefeated Houston Rockets are off to their best start since the 1996-97 season. In their most recent game on Saturday, the Rockets beat Portland 89-80 with Yao Ming racking up 21 points and 12 rebounds.
But it's Tracy McGrady who has really caught the eye so far this year, putting up an average of 32.2 points per game this year to rank second in the league. Recently appointed head coach Rick Adelman, who preaches an offensive of play, seems to be getting the best out of McGrady.
"It's what I played all along, and that's up-tempo," McGrady told The Associated Press when asked about the attacking style. "I can adjust to any system, but I think as far as my ability, my talent and what I do best, it's get up and down the court and play off the ball. I can do that."
The Mavericks, meanwhile, have struggled to find the same consistency. They recorded a huge 123-102 over the Sacramento Kings in their last game, but the Kings are a bad team and didn't put up much of a fight.
The Mavs followed a season-opening win against Cleveland with a shock loss against Atlanta. But Dallas didn't really convince in either game. Only Dirk Nowitski, with a combined 43 points, impressed.
It's only a matter of time before last season's Southwest Conference champions find a groove. But with Josh Howard out through suspension and Erick Dampier injured, that turnaround is unlikely to happen by Monday's game against the surging Rockets.

    Pick: Houston

        Hockey today - November 5

        SCOREBOARD
        Monday, Nov. 5

Pittsburgh at New Jersey (7 p.m. EST)

The Penguins have a power-play goal in all 13 games this season, one shy of the team mark set during the 1988-89 campaign.

        STARS
        Sunday

-Pascal Leclaire, Blue Jackets, stopped 21 shots for his NHL-best fifth shutout of the season and Columbus beat St. Louis 3-0.

-Antoine Vermette, Senators, scored a short-handed goal to tie the game in the third period and later scored in the shootout to help Ottawa edge Boston 2-1.

-Alexander Radulov and Jason Arnott, Predators, each had a goal and an assist in Nashville's 5-2 win over Chicago.

        SHUTOUT CENTRAL

Pascal Leclaire and Columbus (8-3-2) shut down St. Louis 3-0 on Sunday and are off to the best start in franchise history. Leclaire posted his fifth shutout in nine starts this season after coming into the year with one shutout in 59 career games. The Blues have been shut out twice this year, both times by Leclaire.

        FAST STARTERS

Martin Gerber made 21 saves and stopped both of Boston's shooters in the shootout to help Ottawa pick up its 12th win in its first 13 games, 2-1 over the Bruins. Ottawa's fast start is still far off its best opening deep into a season. The Senators began 2005-06 by winning 19 of their initial 22 games.

        STREAKS

Sergei Fedorov extended his points streak to four games with an assist in Columbus' 3-0 victory over St. Louis on Sunday. ... Nashville beat Chicago 5-2 and have now won three straight games, all on the road, and five of six following a six-game losing streak.

        SNAPPED

Chris Mason made 30 saves to end a seven-game personal losing streak in Nashville's 5-2 victory over Chicago on Sunday. ... Keith Tkachuck and Paul Kariya each had a four-game points streak end in St. Louis' 3-0 loss to Columbus.

        SPEAKING

''I wouldn't say it was unorthodox, but to score a short-handed goal after having so many power play opportunities and not really either finishing or looking very good. To tie it short-handed, it's just a good 'find a way to win' game.'' - Ottawa coach John Paddock, after the Senators went 0-for-6 on the power play and scored a game-tying short-handed goal in the third period on Sunday. Ottawa went on to beat Boston 2-1 after winning a shootout.

          Monday's key NHL matchup notes

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils (-115, 5 1/2)

The Devils (5-6-2) opened the season with a nine-game road trip before dropping their home opener to Ottawa on Oct. 27. But New Jersey capped that three-game homestand with wins over Tampa Bay and Toronto, limiting those teams to three goals.

New Jersey has killed off just 71.7 percent (15-for-53) of its penalties, including eight of 11 in its three home games.

Pittsburgh (6-6-1) was one team that exploited New Jersey's weak penalty killing, scoring three times in five opportunities before losing 5-4 to the Devils on Oct. 17. While the power-play unit has accounted for at least one goal in all 13 games for the Penguins, they are trying to salvage a split of their four-game road trip after consecutive defeats.

Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers (-135, 5 1/2)

The New York Rangers look to end a six-game homestand with a fifth victory Monday night when they host the Philadelphia Flyers in the first season meeting between the Atlantic Division rivals.

The Rangers (6-6-1) went 6-2 against the Flyers (8-4-0) last season, but the teams split four meetings at Madison Square Garden.

New York is 4-1-0 on its current homestand following a lackluster 2-5-1 overall start. That included a four-game losing streak prior to their extended stretch at Madison Square Garden, with the lone loss in those five games a 4-1 defeat against Toronto on Oct. 27.

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes (-220, 6)

The Carolina Hurricanes are the highest-scoring team in the NHL, but their prolific offense was absent in their last game against the Washington Capitals.

The Hurricanes will try to avenge an early season shutout loss on Monday when they host the Southeast Division rival Capitals.

Carolina (8-3-3) has averaged a league-high 3.79 goals to climb to the top of the division with one of the best records in the league. In their third game of the season Oct. 6, however, the Hurricanes lost 2-0 at Washington, their lone shutout loss and only shut out victory for the Capitals on the season.

Buffalo Sabres at Montreal Canadiens (-145, 6 1/2)

Four goals against the Buffalo Sabres had been the Montreal Canadiens' highest total of the season. Since then, they've only gotten better at finding the back of the net.

The Canadiens look to continue their success on offense against the Sabres as the Northeast Division rivals continue their season series Monday night.

Montreal (7-3-3) went 2-2-2 to open the season, failing to score more than three goals in any of those contests. But a 4-2 victory over the Sabres on Oct. 20 triggered a 5-1-1 surge, and the Canadiens are tied with Carolina for the most goals in the NHL during that span with 29.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Florida Panthers (-140, 6)

The Tampa Bay Lightning are winless on the road and just squandered a three-goal lead en route to their fifth consecutive defeat overall. Despite these struggles, coach John Tortorella is emphasizing the positive.

The Lightning again try to end their woes Monday when they open a home-and-home series with their Southeast Division rivals, the Florida Panthers.

Tampa Bay (5-7-1) is 0-6 on the road, getting outscored 28-10 and struggling on special teams. The Lightning have converted just 2-of-23 chances on the power play and allowed six man-advantage goals in 27 attempts.

Edmonton Oilers at Minnesota Wild (-240, 5)

Goaltender Niklas Backstrom looked sharp in his first game since returning from a groin injury for the Minnesota Wild. That doesn't bode well for the struggling Edmonton Oilers, who enter Monday's game against their Northwest Division rivals having failed to score against him the last three times he's been in net.

Backstrom, who turned aside 23 shots in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Calgary, is 5-0-0 with a 0.40 goals-against average, three shutouts - all at home - and a .982 save percentage lifetime against the Oilers.

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-150, 6)

After losing at home for the first time this season, Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche look to rebound Monday night by continuing their dominance of the Northwest Division rival Calgary Flames.

The Avalanche (8-5-0) have won their last six meetings with the Flames (6-5-3), including four at the Pepsi Center. They have taken two matchups this season, including a 3-2 overtime victory on Oct. 26 when Ryan Smyth scored 23 seconds into the extra period.

The New York Knicks won their home opener for the first time in six years by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 97-93 Sunday night.

            SIDELINED

Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix's All-Star center, missed the Suns' 103-92 win over Cleveland on Sunday because of soreness in his right knee. He had arthroscopic surgery on the knee Oct. 2. Coach Mike D'Antoni said Stoudemire was day to day.

            SPEAKING

''Ricky made the right play. He just fired it 9,000 miles an hour.'' - Miami head coach Pat Riley on Ricky Davis' decision making in the closing seconds of a 90-88 loss to Charlotte on Sunday. Miami called time-out with 10 seconds left, but Davis threw a wayward pass to Shaquille O'Neal for a turnover with 2.2 seconds remaining.

              Houston at Dallas
Rick Adelman has the Rockets out to a 3-0 start, including a solid 11-point win (106-95) at Utah that saw Tracy McGrady light it up for 47 points. But the road gets a little tougher tonight in Dallas where the Rockets haven't won since April of 2005. The Mavs looked sloppy in dropping their second game to Atlanta, but bounced back nicely with a 21-point (123-102) win over lowly Sacramento on Saturday. Dallas looks like the pick (-5) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Mavericks favored by 9 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Dallas (-5). Here are all of today's games.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils (-115, 5 1/2)

The Devils haven't had much of a chance to warm their skates and take full advantage of home ice. They started their season with a gruelling nine-game road trip and recorded just three wins. They have played just three games at the Prudential Center, winning two.

Trust the Penguins to try and capitalize on the Devils' lack of experience at home. Pittsburgh is looking to rebound from Saturday's 3-2 road loss to the Islanders before heading home to host the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

Many have questioned the scoring ability of this year's Penguins. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have 12 goals between them and Petr Sykora has six. But Colby Armstrong and Jordan Staal have yet to make any waves. Still, anyone who witnessed last year's turnaround season knows what these Pens are capable of.

                  Pick: Penguins -105

Buffalo Sabres at Montreal Canadiens (-145, 6 1/2)

Four is the magic number for the Canadiens heading into tonight's matchup against the Sabres. The Habs have won four of their last six games and played over the total in each of those wins. They also managed at least four goals in each win. Montreal's four-plus scoring streak began when they beat Buffalo at the Bell Center on Oct. 20.

The over/under is 3-1-3 in the Sabres' last seven games, but they averaged just two goals per game in that span.

The Sabres are having an uneven season. They've gone 2-4 on the road and dropped three of six at home, including a 4-2 loss to Florida at HSBC Arena. Tonight's +125 underdog tag is reasonable, generous even.

This one will come down to the total. The Habs should beat the Sabres but they've never faced a total higher than six this season.

                  Pick: Under 6 1/2

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-150, 6)

Miikka Kiprusoff (3.05 GAA) has started each of the Flames' 14 games this season for a total of almost 827 minutes of ice time. It doesn't look like he'll get a break any time soon. With matchups at home against the Canucks, Oilers and Wild just around the corner, Kipper will first have to stave off the Avalanche at Pepsi Center tonight.

Kiprusoff is getting strong support from Jarome Iginla (9 goals, 12 assists) and Daymond Langkow (8 goals, 9 assists) this season. But Colorado is looking to come back from a 4-3 loss to Vancouver and extend its two-game win streak over the Flames this season.

The Avs are 8-5 this season. They have cashed in on the moneyline in seven of those wins as the favorite and one as a +125 underdog.

                  Pick: Avalanche -150

                    Tampa Bay at Florida
Lightning hasn't struck on the road for Tampa Bay as they've dropped all six contests to open the season while being outscored 28-10. The struggles carried over to the home ice on Saturday as the Lightning gave up five unanswered goals to Atlanta en route to a 6-4 loss. The Panthers have been a solid team at home (4-2-0) and have played an aggressive style that has seen them outshoot all but one of their opponents. Florida looks like the pick (-135) tonight according to Dunkel, which has the Panthers favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Florida (-135). Here are all of today's games.

                        Maine vs. Richmond
The Spiders hope to bounce back from a disappointing 2006-07 season that saw them go just 8-22. They open up against Maine (12-18) today at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Memphis. The Black Bears did lose their third all-time leading scorer, Kevin Reed, to graduation, but return starting point guard Junior Bernal (9.9 points, 2.8 assists), who will be expected to shoulder much of the load. Richmond has also had a lot of turnover and has added six freshmen to the roster. It may take a while for the new Spiders to mesh and makes Maine a decent underdog pick (+8 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Richmond favored by just 2. Dunkel Pick: Maine (+8 1/2) . Here are all of today's games.

Richmond runs Princeton offense; they had six freshmen a year ago, but three left last spring, a red flag- they have six more this fall, we'l see how that goes. Blue Ribbon picks them 14th in the Atlantic 14, rarely a good sign. Maine lost four starters from a 12-18/7-9 team; they're picked 9th in nine-team America East, so looks like organizers want to make sure Memphis advances.

Memphis is loaded, with all five starters back from LY; they can name score here, against UT-Martin squad that is almost whole new team, with JC guards coming in, which is good thing, since they were 8-23, 5-15 in OVC last year. Skyhawks are just happy to have a game on TV. Winners-losers face off Tuesday. Tigers were 31-3 LY- this could be ugly.
