Friday's List of 13: NBA knowledge to start season with

Following list is information taken from Sports Illustrated’s NBA Preview Issue, on sale at newsstands everywhere.

      13) Kevin Garnett has grabbed 900+ rebounds eight years in a row; the last time a Celtic grabbed 900+ boards in a season was Robert Parish, back in 1990.

      12) Grant Hill’s mom was college suitemate of Hillary Clinton at Wellesley College. Grant Hill is campaigning for Obama.

      11) Chauncey Billups led the NBA is assist/turnover ratio two years in row (4.11-1/3.59-1).

      10) Ben Gordon scored 20.7 pg when he started LY, 22.5 when he came off the bench.

      9) David Lee is first NBA non-starter since Dennis Rodman in ’94 to grab 10+ boards a game.

      8) Gilbert Arenas shot 48.5%, scored 32.4 ppg in Wizard wins, but in Washington losses, he shot 33.8% and scored 23.9 pg.

      7) Jason Kidd, Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson are only guys in NBA history to average 9+ assists, 8+ rebounds in same season.

      6) Milwaukee Bucks can improve quickly if they get better against their division rivals; they’ve lost fifteen games in row vs Central Division opponents.

      5) Not only did Indiana Pacers miss playoffs LY for first time in decade, they finished last in league in shooting percentage for first time in franchise history-- that includes ABA days.

      4) In his first ten years as a pro, Tim Duncan played in 538 regular season wins, 36 more than any other player (Robert Horry (502) is second) during that period.

      3) The #1-3 teams in 3-pointers made in one season, in league history, not just franchise history:
      1. ’06 Suns (837)
      2. ’05 Suns (796)
      3. ’07 Suns (785).

      2) Nuggets have NBA’s 3rd-highest payroll, which surprised me; they need to make a run in playoffs, having won total of only four playoff games the last four years.

      1) Warriors allowed 106.9 pg LY, the most in the NBA in a decade, and still made the playoffs. Not sure if this makes them a more dangerous team, or a house of cards?

              Friday's Games

Temple won its last three games, for first 3-game conference win streak in 40 years, but lost star QB to injury in meantime; Owls are 1-3 on road this year, losing by 5-13-16 points (2-2 as road dog), winning at Akron (trailed 20-3 in 4th quarter). Ohio scored 42 pg in last three games, running ball for average of 258.7 ypg- they were +3 in turnovers last week, after being -13 in previous four games. Hard to match points with sub QB making first road start, vs. Bobcat squad that is lighting up scoreboard.

Akron, Bowling Green both lost three of last four games, with Zips’ only win on miracle kick return on last play of game; Zips did win last two meetings vs this foe, winning 24-14 in last visit here- they're 1-4 on road this year, 2-3 as road dog. Falcons are 0-2 as favorite this year, losing last week as 7.5-point fave. BG is -9 in turnovers last four games. Akron has been outscored 82-22 in second half of last four games. Not lot to choose from on either side in this one.

New Mexico State is on short work week after returning from its 50-13 loss at Hawaii; they're 1-3 in last four games, but are 4-0 at home in ‘07, beating UTEP (29-24), Idaho (45-31). Nevada won last two games after OT loss at Boise, but didn’t cover either one- they're 1-3 vs spread as favorite in ‘07. NMexico State was outscored 120-34 in second half of its last six games. Wolf Pack ran ball for average of 267 ypg in last four games; totals in their lined road games have been 67-136-59, so expect lot of scoring.

              Saturday's Games

              Top Ten Games

Cincinnati, South Florida both lost their last two games after 6-0 starts, so loser here will be on three-game slide. Home side won last four UC-USF games, with Bearcats losing last two visits to Tampa, 24-17OT/31-16. Cincy had last week off; they're 3-1 at home; teams that beat them held them under 28 (24-17) points. Rutgers is only team that scored more than 23 vs USF this year. Nick Saban won national title at LSU, bolted to NFL, then bolted back to SEC; this is his first meeting vs old team, some of kids he recruited. LSU won last four series games, winning 27-3/16-13 in last two visits here,- things changed a lot once Saban signed with Alabama- they've won last three games, scoring 32.7 ppg, but are 1-4 vs spread in last five games (0-1 as underdog). LSU’s last three games were all decided by six or less points, or in OT. Bama's losses were 26-23 in OT vs Georgia, 21-14 to Florida St. on neutral field. Last three LSU games all went over total- Tiger backup QB Perrilloux is expected miss game for disciplinary reasons. Not that this is special game or anything, but both teams had bye last week.

Visitor won the last four Oregon-Arizona State game, with ASU winning their last two visits to Eugene, 45-42/28-13; Sun Devil QB Carpenter hurt passing thumb last week, hard to imagine it is 100%. Michigan’s last five wins are all by 10+ points.

Wisconsin actually won its last three trips to Columbus; even Tressel is just 1-3 against Badgers, who won last two weeks by combined score of 77-6, but lost last two road games (31-26 at Illinois, 38-7 at Penn St). Buckeyes are 9-0, 2-2 as home favorite, with wins in Horseshoe by 18-41-45-7 pts- they outgained Penn St 453-263 in Happy Valley last week. OSU outscored last six foes 151-14 in first half. Tressel’s only win vs Badgers was 19-14 (-7). We’ll find out quickly if Badgers have improved their run defense, because Ohio State will try to establish run. .

Texas won last nine games vs Oklahoma State, winning last two at Stillwater, 55-16/47-28; Longhorns ran ball for 364 yards vs Nebraska last week, scoring 25 second half points in 28-25 win, but if Charles can’t run wild vs OSU (only one Cowboy foe has run ball for more than 171 yards (206) how will Texas score? Buffs are 5-4 after upsetting Texas Tech, need one more win for bowl; they’re 2-4 vs spread as dog. Besides loss in Norman, Mizzou's only other true road game was 38-25 win (-5.5) at Ole Miss. Six of last eight CU games stayed under total.

Virginia won last two games vs Wake Forest, 38-34/27-24, but teams haven't met since '03; Cavs had 7-game win streak ended last week in Raleigh- underdog is 8-1 vs spread in their games this year. -- SMU fired coach Bennett; he will finish season; Mustangs are 1-7 SU, but covered seven of last nine tries as double digit dog. Visitor is 11-5 vs spread in SMU-Houston series, an old SWC rivalry. Cougars lost to Mustangs as 13-point favorite last time they visited here.

-- Arkansas State covered just 38.5% of time in last 26 tries as favorite, but they won last two games vs FIU, 66-24/31-6. Panthers lost last 20 games- they're 1-3-1 vs spread in last five games and have lost four games this season by 40+ points.

Nevada at New Mexico State (ESPN2 | 8 PM ET)

The Western Athletic Conference takes center stage once again on Friday night, as the New Mexico State Aggies play host to the Nevada Wolf Pack in Las Cruses. Nevada has enjoyed plenty of success against New Mexico State winning 9 out of the last 10 meetings, while covering every game which had a point spread. EDGE: NEVADA
Nevada RB Luke Lippincott and QB Colin Kaepernick have burst onto the scene in the WAC this year. Lippincott is second in the conference averaging 114 yards per game, and Kaepernick has 10 touchdown passes already in three plus games since replacing the injured Nick Graziano. New Mexico State?s pass defense is ranked last in the WAC giving up a total of 273 yards per game, and tied for 105th in the nation giving up an average 35 points per game. BIG EDGE: NEVADA

The Wolverines will be trying for their sixth straight win over Michigan State and eighth in a row overall, and they expect to have starting QB Chad Henne and RB Mike Hart back in the lineup. Henne sat out last week's win over Minnesota with a shoulder injury while Hart has missed the last couple games with an ankle injury. Henne has passed for 669 yards with 10 touchdowns and only one interception in three career games against the Spartans while Hart has totaled 564 rushing yards and two TDs. BIG EDGE: MICHIGAN
Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio will get his first taste of this intrastate rivalry, and he has kept the Spartans close against two ranked foes this season. They lost to Ohio State and Wisconsin by a combined 10 points - covering both games - and are coming off a triple-overtime loss at Iowa last week. "The Michigan game to me is the game that we've pointed toward since I got here, and I think that's the way it should be," Dantonio said. "That's the way it should be at Michigan State. It's a measuring stick for us because I do consider Michigan one of the elite teams in this conference. They have been and always probably will be." SLIGHT EDGE: MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 road games.

Texas RB Jamaal Charles is coming off a career-high 290 rushing yards last week against Nebraska, including 216 in the fourth quarter that nearly set an NCAA record. Charles had averaged 64.6 yards in his previous five games and now faces an Oklahoma State run defense that is giving up 122.8 yards per game in Big 12 play. The Longhorns are 8-0 when he rushes for 100 yards or more, including 4-0 this season. EDGE: TEXAS
The Cowboys are averaging 42.8 points per game at home compared to 26.3 on the road. They are coming off a bye week after beating Kansas State 41-39 on a last-second field goal to remain unbeaten at home with a 4-0 mark. EDGE: OKLAHOMA STATE

Texas is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 road games.

Oklahoma State is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 home games.
Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

Cincinnati at #18 South Florida (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

South Florida has dropped its last two games on the road by a combined 10 points but has won its last four at home by an average of 25.5 points per game. The Bulls have also won the last two home meetings with Cincy by an average of 11 points. EDGE: SOUTH FLORIDA
Bearcats QB Ben Mauk is not worried about his team dropping two in a row heading into this key Big East battle either, as the title is still up in the air. "I don't think the two losses take us out of the running for the Big East Championship at all," Mauk said. "It's the kind of conference where any team can beat any other team on any given week. We need to not worry about anybody else and just make sure we take care of business." EDGE: CINCINNATI
Cincinnati is 6-1-1 ATS against a winning team.

Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

#3 LSU at #17 Alabama (CBS | 5 PM ET)

This marks the first time Alabama head coach Nick Saban will be facing his former team, one that he led to the national title four years ago before leaving to coach the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Saban has said he is trying to avoid the spotlight and would rather it be on his players even though that's nearly impossible considering the circumstances. "The focus on the game should be about the players, not about anything else," Saban said. "I don't know what people are saying. I don't know what's going on out there. I know you guys (the media) are busy creating it. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in trying to be a part of it." Insiders believe it will affect his players, but in a negative light because they will face too much pressure. EDGE: LSU
The Tigers enter this key SEC matchup with the conference's second-best pass defense (allowing 160.6 yards per game) and 13 interceptions. That will be critical against Alabama QB John Parker Wilson, who completed a school record-tying 32 passes for a career-high 363 yards with three touchdowns in a 41-17 rout of Tennessee in the team's last game on October 20th. SLIGHT EDGE: LSU
LSU is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games against a winning team.
LSU is 0-5 ATS in its last 5 games as a favorite.

Alabama is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
Road team is 9-1-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

#4 Arizona State at #5 Oregon (ESPN | 6:40 PM ET)

The Sun Devils quietly snuck into fourth place in the BCS standings two weeks ago and remain there after beating Cal 31-20 last Saturday night in Tempe. They now find themselves in the hunt for a potential BCS berth and can take another big step toward that goal with a win at Oregon. "We're just a bunch of guys who nobody thought was very good," Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson said. "It's kind of scary, starting to read our name in the paper every week now." EDGE: ARIZONA STATE
Oregon has the fourth-best offense in the country (averaging 524.4 yards per game) and is the fifth-highest scoring team in the nation (43.8 points per game). The Ducks are coming off a season-low 339 yards in a 24-17 win over USC and face the top scoring defense in the Pac-10, as Arizona State is limiting opponents to just 15.6 points per game. The Sun Devils also have a league-best 14 interceptions. SLIGHT EDGE: ARIZONA STATE
Arizona State could be without starting QB Rudy Carpenter, who has a sprained thumb on his throwing hand and could not even throw a football earlier in the week. "He'll play," Erickson said. "I would be shocked if he didn't come out throwing by Thursday, but I'm not a doctor." If he doesn't, sophomore Danny Sullivan will get the call. Sullivan has completed 11 of 14 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown in limited action this year. BIG EDGE: OREGON
Arizona State is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 conference games.
Arizona State is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games as a small road underdog.
Oregon is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games as a favorite.
Oregon is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 home games.
Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

Florida State at #2 Boston College (ABC | 8 PM ET)

The unbeaten Eagles are off to their best start since 1942 after rallying back in the final minutes for a 14-10 victory at Virginia Tech last Thursday night. They also won 26-16 at Florida State last year and have put together a 16-game home winning streak. In fact, BC's last home loss was 28-17 to Florida State back on September 17th, 2005. EDGE: BOSTON COLLEGE
Florida State has a very difficult schedule to wrap up the regular season, visiting BC, Virginia Tech and Florida while hosting Maryland in between. However, Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden is relishing the opportunity to ruin an opponent's season down the stretch. "Of course, Boston College is No. 2 in the nation so it gives us a chance to be the spoilers," Bowden said. "You can remember how many years where we were ranked one, two, three, four and they would come in and be the spoilers. Well now, the opportunity is in our hands." EDGE: FLORIDA STATE
Florida State is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games as an undersog.
Florida State is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 conference games.
Boston College is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games as a home favorite.
Boston College is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 6-0 in BC’s last 6 games overall.

Texas A&M at #6 Oklahoma (ABC | 8 PM ET)

Oklahoma RB Allen Patrick had a career-high 173 yards on 32 carries with a touchdown in the last meeting with Texas A&M while filling in for Adrian Peterson. Patrick leads an OU rushing attack that averages 193.5 yards per game this season, and QB Sam Bradford believe the team's bye week couldn't have come at a better time. "I felt the off week was really positive for us," Bradford said. "It allowed us to get some extra work on our future opponents, as well as Texas A&M. I think the long weekend gave our guys a chance to rest up and catch up and come back fresh yesterday for practice. I felt they were really excited to be back." EDGE: OKLAHOMA
The Aggies are coming off a season-low 74 rushing yards in a 19-11 home loss to Kansas last week. They lead the Big 12 in rushing with 239.4 yards per game and now meet the 3rd-best run defense in the country, limiting opponents to just 68.9 yards per game. "With their two running backs and quarterback back there, you're really defending the wishbone," OU head coach Bob Stoops said. "They just hide it in acting like they're not running the wishbone. In the end, they are. They're running the triple option, running veer option principles." EDGE: OKLAHOMA
Texas A&M is 6-0-1 ATS in its last 7 games following a SU loss.
Texas A&M is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games as an undersog.
Oklahoma is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 home games.
Oklahoma is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 conference games.
Home team is 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

Oregon State at #19 USC (ABC | 8 PM ET)

The Trojans have won 21 in a row at home and 20 straight in November under head coach Pete Carroll. "(Remaining undefeated in November is) not a big battle cry for me, never has been," Carroll said. "But finishing, finishing has always been one of the tenets of our program. And it's finish time now. If we finish really strong, and we put this thing together, we'll have really overcome some difficult things." BIG EDGE: USC
USC could get starting QB John David Booty back after he missed the last three games with a broken middle finger. Backup Mark Sanchez has been solid with seven touchdowns but four interceptions filling in for Booty. "If John's full-speed, ready to go, he's the starter," Carroll said. "The question mark through these last few weeks is whether he could play effectively or not. And if there is a question about that, we were thrilled to play Mark, because he's a heck of a player, a great young kid coming up." SLIGHT EDGE: USC
The Beavers have won four straight since suffering losses to Arizona State and UCLA. They lead the nation in run defense, allowing only 54.5 yards per game. That could be a huge factor if Sanchez starts again, putting more pressure on him to win the game through the air. EDGE: OREGON STATE
Oregon State is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games against a winning team.
Oregon State is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

                  College Football Top 25
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There wasn’t much movement at the top of the Top 25 this week, as the same five teams continued to occupy the Top 5 spots. Ohio State is still undefeated and still No. 1, while Boston College checks in at No. 2 and LSU is stuck at No. 3. There was a flip-flop at No. 4 and 5 though, as Oregon moved up to No. 4 and Oklahoma dropped into the No. 5 hole.

The biggest gainer of the week was Georgia, who jumped up a big 10 spots after an upset win over Florida. Also making a big move was Alabama, up five spots, while six teams made four-spot gains.

The biggest losers of the week were South Florida and Florida, who both fell nine spots. It was also a bad week for South Carolina, as the Gamecocks fell eight spots.

Five new teams entered the rankings this week, including Clemson, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Boise State and Connecticut. The five teams that fell out of the rankings were Kentucky, California, Virginia, Penn State and Rutgers.

                  1. Ohio State – 9-0 (1) – The Buckeyes defeated Penn State 37-17 last week to hold on to the top spot. Ohio State gets another tough Big Ten opponent this weekend when they take on 7-2 Wisconsin at home.

                  2. Boston College – 8-0 (2) – The Eagles pulled off a huge come-from-behind 14-10 win over Virginia Tech last week to remain at No. 2. Boston College’s journey through the ACC continues this weekend with a visit from 5-3 Florida State.

                  3. LSU – 7-1 (3) – The Tigers were off last week, but were still able to hold onto the No. 3 position. LSU heads to No. 17 Alabama in a SEC West showdown this weekend.

                  4. Oregon – 7-1 (5) – The Ducks moved up a single spot after beating USC 24-17 last week. Oregon has their biggest game of the season this week versus No. 6 and Pac-10 leader Arizona State.

                  5. Oklahoma – 7-1 (4) – The Sooners dropped to No. 5 despite not even playing last week. Oklahoma returns to the field this weekend against 6-2 Texas A&M at home.

                  6. Arizona State – 8-0 (7) – The Sun Devils remained undefeated after knocking off California 31-20 last week. Arizona State has a tough road game this week at No. 4 Oregon.

                  7. West Virginia – 7-1 (6) – The Mountaineers fell one spot in the rankings even though they blasted Rutgers 31-1 last week. West Virginia is off this weekend before taking on 5-4 Louisville on Nov. 8.

                  8. Kansas – 8-0 (12) – The Jayhawks maintained their undefeated record with a 19-11 win over Texas A&M last week. Kansas gets 4-5 Nebraska at home this week.

                  9. Missouri – 7-1 (13) – The Tigers entered the Top 10 after ripping Iowa State 42-28. Missouri faces 5-4 Colorado on the road this week.

                  10. Georgia – 6-2 (20) – The Bulldogs made a big leap into the Top 10 after upsetting Florida 42-30 last week. Georgia ventures outside the SEC this week to face 6-2 Troy.

                  11. Virginia Tech – 6-2 (8) – The Hokies fell out of the Top 10 after losing to Boston College 14-10 last week. Virginia Tech has another early Thursday game this week at 5-3 Georgia Tech.

                  12. Hawaii – 8-0 (16) – The Warriors beat up on New Mexico State 50-13 last week. Hawaii gets a week off before facing Fresno State on Nov. 10.

                  13. USC – 6-2 (9) – The Trojans couldn’t get it done last week in a 24-17 loss to Oregon. The Trojans will try to get back on track this week versus 5-3 Oregon State.

                  14. Texas – 7-2 (17) – The Longhorns started climbing the ladder again after defeating Nebraska 28-25 last week. Texas heads to 5-3 Oklahoma State this weekend.

                  15. Michigan – 7-2 (19) – The Wolverines kept moving up the rankings after drubbing Minnesota 34-10 last week. Michigan takes on state rivals 5-4 Michigan State on the road this week.

                  16. Connecticut – 7-1 (-) – The Big East-leading Huskies found their way into the Top 25 after slipping past South Florida 22-15 last week. Connecticut puts their perfect conference record on the line versus 5-3 Rutgers this week.

                  17. Alabama – 6-2 (22) – The Crimson Tide were off last week, but still moved up five slots on the rankings. Alabama is in tough this week when they host No. 3 LSU.

                  18. Florida – 5-3 (9) – The Gators plummeted down the rankings after a 42-30 upset loss to Georgia. Florida hosts 5-3 Vanderbilt this week.

                  19. Auburn – 6-3 (23) – The Tigers slashed Mississippi 17-3 last week. Auburn has a laugher this week against 4-5 Tennessee Tech.

                  20. South Florida – 6-2 (11) – The Bulls' Top 25 swoon continued last week, as they lost to Connecticut 22-15. South Florida needs to rebound this weekend when they face 6-2 Cincinnati.

                  21. Boise State – 7-1 (-) – The Broncos rode back into the Top 25 after beating Fresno State 34-21. Boise State should have no trouble with 3-5 San Jose State this week.

                  22. Wake Forest – 6-2 (-) – The Demon Deacons made their Top 25 debut after pounding North Carolina 37-10 last week. Wake Forest heads to 7-2 Virginia this week.

                  23. South Carolina – 6-3 (15) – The Gamecocks' fast drop down the rankings continued after they lost to Tennessee 27-24 last week. South Carolina needs a big win this weekend when they visit 5-3 Arkansas.

                  24. Tennessee – 5-3 (-) – The Volunteers got back into the Top 25 after upsetting South Carolina 27-24 last week. Tennessee gets a much easier game this weekend versus 1-7 Louisiana-Lafayette.

                  25. Clemson – 6-2 (-) – The Tigers got into the Top 25 after crushing Maryland 30-17. Clemson heads to 1-7 Duke this week.

Montreal (8-9) @ Winnipeg (9-7-1)-- Bombers beat Montreal twice early in season, 32-23 here in Week 2 (-4.5), then 20-18 in Quebec two weeks later (+3). Als won for first time in last five road games a week ago in Calgary; they're 1-6 vs spread overall in last seven games. Winnipeg lost three of last four games, but they have won five of last six at home. Under is 8-3 the last 11 Bomber games.

                          Friday, November 2

Montreal Alouettes at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-9, 46 ½)
                          Friday, Nov. 2, 8 p.m. ET

Winnipeg's defense was fine last week in Toronto, but its offense left a lot to be desired. Charles Roberts looks likely to miss Friday night’s game, so putting points on the board might be a challenge again.

The good news for Winnipeg is that their defensive unit is getting healthier. Kind of. Rush end Tom Canada and DB Juran Bolden are out, but DT Doug Brown will play after taking a poke in the eye last weekend. Brown is a huge run-stuffer and his presence means a lot.

Montreal’s running game won’t be at full power anyway with Jarrett Payton sitting out. Marcus Brady played great off the bench to steal a win in Calgary last week, but the Als don't have a lot of incentive on Friday. Win or lose, they’ll have to win a playoff game in Winnipeg to make the Grey Cup dream come true.

Canad Inns Stadium will be chilly on with a decent breeze on the go. The Bombers' kicking game is as bad as it gets in the league and the Als’ offense is unlikely to reproduce last week's fireworks. I like the odds of a low-scoring game.

                          Pick: Under 46 ½

                          Saturday, November 3

Toronto Argonauts at Saskatchewan Roughriders (odds unavailable)
                          Saturday, Nov. 3, 3 p.m. ET

Here's where it gets tricky when you write a midweek column. The line is currently off the board, but that’s fine – bettors shouldn’t touch this game until the final whistle blows in Winnipeg on Friday night.

If the Bombers win (and they're heavily favored to do so), then the Boatmen will go all out to reclaim the division lead and claim a week off. That means a lot for CFL bettors, as the Argos have been the league’s best bet this year. A Winnipeg loss, however, gives Argos head coach Mike Clemons carte blanche to rest key players in Regina.

Speaking of resting players, Saskatchewan coach Kent Austin is unlikely to do it again on Saturday. The Riders sent out a second-rate lineup at Commonwealth Stadium last weekend and snuck away with an overtime win. Austin doesn't want his starters to be rusty for next weekend's West semifinal against Calgary. Expect a return to the field for everyone who isn't seriously ailing.

If Winnipeg wins on Friday, I like the Argos to maintain their ATS form on Saturday so long as they’re getting more than a field goal. If Winnipeg loses, however, Saturday’s game turns into a glorified scrimmage and I’ll flip a coin.

                          Pick: Check back Saturday morning

Edmonton Eskimos at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+2, 48 ½)
                          Saturday, Nov. 3, 7 p.m. ET

Edmonton's last chance at playoff romance was cut short last Friday night by a phantom holding call. So now what for the Eskies They've played reasonably well in their last three losses, but the manner of last week’s could be a real downer for the season finale.

Then there's Hamilton, for whom nearly the entire 2007 season was a downer. There was a two-week stretch of hope in the summer when Jesse Lumsden ran wild over opposing defenders, but Lumsden is sidelined now, as are many other Ticats whose contributions made games close late in the season.

The Esks' offense hasn't dropped off too much with Stefan LeFors at QB and Damien Anderson at RB. They should be able to put up points on what’s forecast as a nice night in Steeltown. Edmonton's road defense has been shoddy against West Division rivals (38.8 points allowed per game) but far better when visiting East Division teams (allowing only 19.3). That should be enough to deliver as a road favorite.

I couldn’t fade the Ticats last week getting 12 ½ points at home. But this week has a totally different feel to it. Players should be fighting for roster spots on both clubs but the Eskies’ newcomers seem more anxious to please.

                          Pick: Eskimos -2

Calgary Stampeders at BC Lions (-6 ½, 51)
                          Saturday, Nov. 3, 10 p.m. ET

The Lions have won the West again, holding off the hard-charging Riders. BC has a week off next week and its quarterbacks are grateful. Jarious Jackson will start against Calgary on Saturday night with sore ribs, Dave Dickenson’s “handle with care” label still applies and Buck Pierce apparently can't lift his throwing arm above his head.

The pain of the Lions' pivots, however, doesn't compare to the pain of Stamps fans as Calgary bungled its way to a loss to the shorthanded Als last weekend. The Week 17 win over the Bombers fooled me into thinking that all was well in Cowtown. Whoops. The defense was a mess last week and all the Stamps’ units put on a truly poor display of football.

BC head coach Wally Buono will start a familiar-looking lineup but will make sure a lot of second-stringers get some meaningful reps. But that's OK. The Lions backups are more likely to play smart football than the Stampeders.

The Lions have lost only two games at BC Place, a pair of midseason defeats to peaking Saskatchewan and Winnipeg clubs. Since then, the Lions have won their four home games by an average score of 41.3 to 13.8.

                          Pick: Lions -6 ½

                          Last week: 2-2
                          Year to date: 34-34

                            New England at Indianapolis
New England has put fear into the rest of the league with a juggernaut that continues to ram through teams with the greatest of ease. The latest exhibition came last week with the Patriots' 52-7 dismantling of Washington in which Tom Brady threw for three scores and ran for two more. It was the eighth straight game that Brady has thrown at least three TD passes -- an NFL record -- and he continues to be on pace to shatter Peyton Manning's single-season record of TD passes in a season. He has made the most of his revamped receiving corps of Moss, Welker and Stallworth and comes into the game with a sky-high 136.2 passer rating. But if there is one team that is not intimidated by this show, it is the Manning-led Colts. Manning has put up respectable numbers (13 TDs, 102.9 passer rating), but they are not gaudy largely because the Colts are actually running a balanced offense. The rushing attack behind Joseph Addai and Kenton Keith ranks fifth in the league (140.3 ypg) and leads the NFL with 12 TDs. And the defense has continued to improve under Tony Dungy and comes in ranked No. 1 against the pass (165.4 ypg) while only allowing 14.6 points per game. Indianapolis has won the last three meetings between these two teams, including last year's AFC championship (38-34) in which the Colts overcame a 21-3 halftime deficit. At home, Indy looks like a good underdog pick (+6) according to Dunkel, which has the Colts favored straight up by 4. Dunkel Pick: Indianapolis (+6). Here are all of this week's picks.
