Pick ‘n’ roll: Thursday’s best NBA bets

            Detroit Pistons at Miami Heat (+4 ½, 180 1/2)

The Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat will renew their Eastern Conference rivalry Thursday in South Beach with some familiar faces missing from both teams’ rosters.

Miami will be without superstar Dwyane Wade until late November after Wade underwent knee and shoulder surgery in the offseason. The Heat will rely on a declining Shaquille O’Neal and newcomer Ricky Davis to carry the scoring load. O’Neal averaged a mediocre 17 points and seven rebounds per game last season.

Detroit parted ways with veteran Chris Webber this offseason after third-year forward Jason Maxiell emerged as a capable low-post reserve. Maxiell averaged five points and three rebounds in limited action last season and will undoubtedly see more playing time this season. The Pistons also moved veteran forward Antonio McDyess into the starting lineup and shifted a slimmer Rasheed Wallace over to the center position.

Miami is counting on erratic point guard Jason Williams to lead the offense again this season after failing to secure a point guard in the offseason. Williams averaged 10 points and 4 assists last season for the Heat.

            Pick: Pistons -4 ½

Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz (-4, 191 1/2)

The Jazz have covered the spread in seven of their last 10 meetings with the Houston Rockets, including five consecutive against-the-spread (ATS) wins in their playoff series in May.

Utah hammered Golden State 117-96 as a 1 ½-point road underdog in Oakland on Tuesday. Carlos Boozer led the Jazz with 32 points and 15 rebounds and Deron Williams added 24 points. Despite offseason trade demands, athletic power forward Andrei Kirilenko was stifling on defense, recording five blocks and 10 rebounds.

On the same night, the Rockets came away from the Staples Center with a narrow two-point win over the shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers. Houston struggled to contain Kobe Bryant, who torched the Rockets for 45 points with four steals. Tracy McGrady led Houston with 30 points and Yao Ming added 25 points and 12 rebounds but the Rockets could not maintain a lead against the overmatched Lakers.

The Rockets are 0-5 ATS in their last five meetings in Utah and the Jazz are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 overall contests at Energy Solutions Arena.

            Pick: Jazz -4

Detroit at Calgary (8:00 p.m. EDT).

The league-leading Red Wings continue their trip through the Pacific Northwest.

              STARS Wednesday

-Jay Pandolfo, Devils, scored three goals to help New Jersey beat Tampa Bay 6-1.

-Jason Williams, Blackhawks, scored two goals in the third period, including one with 20.4 seconds left that lifted Chicago over Dallas 5-4.

-Jason Chimera, Blue Jackets, scored two goals to lead Columbus past Los Angeles 4-1.

              FIRSTS

Jay Pandolfo scored three goals for the first time to lead New Jersey to a 6-1 win over Tampa Bay on Wednesday, giving the Devils their first victory at the Prudential Center. John Madden scored a goal and assisted on all three of Pandolfo's goals and Martin Brodeur, playing in his 900th game, made 21 saves as New Jersey halted a four-game losing streak.

              SNAPPED

Florida scored three goals in the third period to beat Carolina 4-2 on Wednesday and snap a three-game skid. The win also ended a seven-game losing streak to the Hurricanes, dating back to last season. ... Chicago snapped a nine-game losing streak in Dallas dating to 2001, beating the Stars 5-4. Nikolai Khabibulin broke a personal seven-game winless streak in Dallas and had 19 saves for the Blackhawks. ... Los Angeles fell to Columbus 4-1, ending a four-game winning streak.

              STREAKING

Mike Ribeiro had a goal and an assist in Dallas' 5-4 loss to Chicago on Wednesday and has at least one point in seven straight games. The Stars have scored a first-period goal in nine straight games. ... Columbus topped Los Angeles 4-1 to earn their fourth straight win.

              ROAD WOES

Tampa Bay was routed by New Jersey 6-1 on Wednesday and has lost all five of its road games this season. Vincent Lecavalier scored the only goal for the Lightning.

              INJURED

Philadelphia defenseman Derian Hatcher will undergo surgery to repair cartilage damage in his right knee and will miss two to four weeks. The 35-year-old Hatcher, who had his streak of 107 consecutive games recently snapped because the knee was bothering him, said he aggravated the injury lifting weights. The Flyers called up Nate Guenin from their American Hockey League affiliate Philadelphia Phantoms to fill Hatcher's roster spot.

              SPEAKING

''Someone screwed up. It's partly why I didn't want to stand up. After a moment I stood to get it over with and get the game running again.'' - Dallas center Mike Modano, who was initially awarded a record-tying assist on a goal in the third period of the Stars' 5-4 loss to Chicago. The assist would have been his 1,232nd point, matching Phil Housley for the most points by an American-born NHL player. After the game, it was ruled Modano never touched the puck and the assist was taken away from him.

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Islanders -135, 5 1/2

Vincent Lecavalier will look to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games Thursday. He had two goals and four assists in four games versus the Islanders last season.

Washington Capitals at New York Rangers -170, 5 1/2

Jaromir Jagr has four goals and 12 assists in 12 games against the Capitals since they traded him to New York on Jan. 23, 2004.

                Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens-120, 5 1/2

Cristobal Huet is 2-1-1 with a 1.48 GAA at the Bell Center this season, and stopped 25 shots to record a shutout in his only career game against the Flyers there on Feb. 5, 2006.

Detroit Red Wings at Calgary Flames -110, 5 1/2

Though he lost to the Red Wings last month, Mikka Kiprusoff is 3-1-1 with a 1.19 GAA at home against them since joining the Flames in 2003.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Colorado Avalanche -135, 6 1/2

Sidney Crosby has faced Colorado once in his career, posting an assist in the Penguins' 4-3 home win on Dec, 10, 2005.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Anaheim Ducks -200, 5

The Blue Jackets opened 2007-08 with a 4-0 shutout of the Ducks on Oct. 5 in Columbus. Pascal Leclaire made 28 saves for the first of his league-leading four shutouts, and Rick Nash had two goals and two assists.

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets

Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins (-105, 6)

The Bruins begin a critical stretch of games tonight against the Sabres. Boston's next nine contests are against division rivals, including three with Buffalo. To make matters worse they will have to play without star center Patrice Bergeron and No. 1 goalie Manny Fernandez. Bergeron is still recovering from a brutal hit on Saturday and Fernandez strained his left knee in practice on Tuesday.

Boston has not been very profitable against Buffalo. The Bruins have gone 3-12-1 against the Sabres since the beginning of the 2005-06 season.

                  Pick: Sabres -115

Pittsburgh Penguins at Colorado Avalanche (-145, 6 1/2)

With the amount of Penguins firepower it was only a matter of time before the offense started to click. Sidney Crosby has five goals and 12 assists in his last 10 games and Evgeni Malkin has three goals and six assists during a four-game point streak.

The Pens run into an Avs team that is still unbeaten at home this season. Colorado is trying to win its third game in a row overall. Ryan Smyth has scored three goals and four assists in the last four games at the Pepsi Center while Joe Sakic has a goal and five assists over the last five games overall.

                  Pick: Over 6 ½

Columbus Blue Jackets at Anahiem Ducks (-200, 5)

The Anaheim Ducks are finding out it is harder to be the hunted rather than the hunter. The defending Stanley Cup champs will try to get back on track after a poor first month with a game tonight against the Blue Jackets. The Ducks lost to Columbus 4-0 earlier this season and tonight will try to avoid losing their fifth in a row overall. The champs haven't had a losing streak that long in two years.

The Blue Jackets have emerged as one of the surprise successes this season playing coach Ken Hitchcock' defensive-minded style. Their 21 goals allowed are the fewest in the Western Conference.

                  Pick: Blue Jackets +170

#11 Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech (ESPN | 7:30 PM)

This is a revenge game for Virginia Tech following last year's 38-27 home loss to former Georgia Tech star WR Calvin Johnson & Co. Johnson scored two touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 21-7 lead for the Yellow Jacksets, who were also up 38-13 going into the fourth. Hokies star RB Brandon Ore was never able to get into a groove with his team playing from behind, totaling just 59 yards on 14 carries. Insiders expect this to be a much different game without Johnson in the mix. EDGE: VIRGINIA TECH & UNDER
The Yellow Jackets bring a depleted offensive backfield into this game after losing both starting RB Tashard Choice (knee) and backup Rashaun Grant (leg) to injuries in a 34-10 win over Army on October 20th. That means freshman Jonathan Dwyer and sophomore Jamaal Evans will need to carry the load against the third-ranked run defense in the ACC. EDGE: VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies may choose to start true freshman QB Tyrod Taylor against Georgia Tech after he sat out last week's 14-10 home loss to Boston College with an ankle injury. Taylor is a much better runner when healthy. Sean Glennon started last week for Virginia Tech and was sacked three times while rushing 14 times for 23 yards. Regardless of who starts, the Yellow Jackets have allowed just 27 points total in their last three wins and own the ACC's top defense. (Check status on Pregame Wire) EDGE: GEORGIA TECH
Virginia Tech is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 road games.
Virginia Tech is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games against a winning team.
Georgia Tech is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 Thursday games.
Georgia Tech is 0-6 ATS in its last 6 games following a bye week,
The UNDER is 9-4 in Virginia Tech’s last 13 games overall.
