    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Alex Rodriguez is 8 for his last 59 (.136) in playoff games, 0 for last 28 on road. Its easy to see why someone would shell out $30M a year for the guy-- well, maybe not.

-- Lions are 5-0 this season when they win or tie turnover battle; they're looking like a playoff team, despite losses of 34-3 and 56-21 earlier this season.

-- In their last four games, Bengals allowed six TD drives of 80+ yards. Their defense is horrible.

-- Steelers are 24 for last 38 on third down; they don’t beat themselves; their defense hasn’t allowed a TD drive of less than 61 yards this season. Opponents have started just four drives in Pittsburgh territory.

-- ESPN televised the Doyle Brunson/Dewey Tomko golf tournament Sunday; a team event made up of professional poker players. Pro poker players are trying to get Intenet poker legalized again in Anerica- it seems silly that it is isn't.

-- ESPN does a lot of ridiculous stuff these days, but their opening of Monday's Packer-Bronco game, with Deanna Favre talking about her husband, was excellent work.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13......

This list isn’t a ranking, except the #1 team will be the team we think should be their in the "real" polls. Teams get posted here, based on things that happen from week-to-week…….

      13) Georgia—Came out with fire in their eyes and beat rival Gators for just third time in last 18 meetings.

      12) UConn—Beat Louisville, South Florida back/back, now lead the Big East. Can they keep their momentum on road?

      11) Colorado— THIS IS BIG 12 FOOTBALL!!!! Dan Hawkins is one win from going from 2-10 to a bowl, and with his son at QB. Damn fine coaching job- the kid's a freshman.

      10) Mississippi State—Likewise for Sylvester Croom, who needs one win for a bowl, and he still has Ole Miss to play. Could 11 of 12 SEC teams be bowl eligible?

      9) Hawai’i— Its not their fault the schedule is weak; teams won’t play them. Look at the teams that play I-AA foes; two of them couldn’t use a trip to the islands to help recruiting?

      8) West Virginia—They can really run ball. Not sure if White can win a game passing, though.

      7) Arizona State—Been dominant in second half. Tough test at Oregon this week.

      6) Oklahoma—Like Colorado, doing pretty well for having freshman QB under center.

      5) Boston College—November will be tough gauntlet for the Eagles, but after stealing win in Blacksburg, they believe in senior QB Ryan.

      4) Kansas—Have big 12 road wins at K-State, Colorado and Texas A&M. They also have a coach who could double as a manager in the WWE.

      3) Ohio State- -Methodically dismantled Penn State in Happy Valley. All they do is win.

      2) LSU—Tigers go back on top of this list if they beat Coach Saban in Tuscaloosa Saturday. That's a very big if.

      1) Oregon—Ducks-LSU in Superdome would be entertaining as hell. They need to get Ohio State and BC out of the way.

              NBA Gameday
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              NBA Gameday: Opening Night

The NBA tips off its 2007/08 campaign on Tuesday night with three matchups involving only Western Conference teams. Here's a look at those season openers . . .

Portland Trail Blazers at San Antonio Spurs (-13), 8:00pm ET

The Trail Blazers had yet another dismal season last year, finishing with a 32-50 record and 10 games out of a playoff berth in the Western Conference. Things were supposed to be different this year with the addition of Greg Oden to the lineup, but the top overall pick is expected to miss the entire season after undergoing knee surgery. That should mean another long year for Portland in the tough West, and another non-playoff result.

The Spurs, on the other hand, had good success in the regular season last year (a 58-24 record and the No. 3 seed in the conference), and great success in the playoffs as they won yet another NBA Championship. With San Antonio's core trio of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili all healthy from the outset the team shouldn't have much trouble rising quickly in the standings, and easily knocking off clubs like Portland.

Utah Jazz at Golden State Warriors (-3), 10:30pm ET

The Jazz benefit from playing in the weakest division in the West, and they didn't have much trouble winning the Northwest last year with a mark of 51-31. Utah, though, managed to have some playoff success as well, making it all the way to the Conference Finals before losing to the eventual-champion Spurs. Utah will be looking for more good results this year, and keeping moody Andrei Kirilenko happy will help achieve that goal.

The Warriors were the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference playoffs last year, but no matter - they shocked the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round with a six-game victory. Golden State then fell to Utah in the second round, but their success versus the Mavs has raised expectations for this season. The Warriors have several players nursing nagging injuries, so their first order of business is getting healthy.

Houston Rockets (-5) at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30pm ET

It was another year, another first-round exit for the Rockets last season, as Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, and company were toppled in seven games by the Jazz. Houston brought back Steve Francis to see if he has anything left in the tank, but it will be the duo of McGrady and Ming with which they'll live or die. Houston finished with a 52-30 record in the tough Southwest Division last year, and they were fifth in the conference.

The Lakers still have Kobe Bryant on their roster - and that's not expected to change between now and tipoff. However, Bryant trade rumors remain a staple of the major sports news sites, and the star's status with L.A. could be a constant distraction this season - especially if the team isn't winning. The Lakers ended up 42-40 and well behind the Suns in the Pacific last year, and they fell easily to Phoenix in the first round.

The teams of the Eastern Conference will get in on the action starting on Wednesday night; games scheduled for that day include Washington at Indiana, Milwaukee at Orlando, Philadelphia at Toronto, Chicago at New Jersey, and Dallas at Cleveland. As well, it's Sacramento at New Orleans, San Antonio at Memphis, and Seattle at Denver.

                  Portland at San Antonio
The Spurs begin their quest for a fourth NBA title in the last six years when the open up tonight against Portland. San Antonio returns essentially the same team that went 16-4 in the postseason last year, including a four-game sweep over Cleveland for the title. Finals' MVP Tony Parker, who averaged 24.5 points on 56.8 percent shooting against the Cavs, claims to be in even better shape this year. And the bench with Manu Ginobili, Bruce Bowen, Robert Horry, Brent Barry, Michael Finley and Jacque Vaughn have a combined 65 years of experience. That contrasts with the Blazers' roster that is stocked with youth. There was excitement in Portland when Greg Oden was drafted No. 1. But Oden's knee injury will keep him out for the season, leaving the Blazers with some question marks in the middle. With Tim Duncan still patrolling the middle, the Spurs should take advantage and cover the line (-13 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has San Antonio favored by 18 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Antonio (-13 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                    Atlanta at Montreal
The Thrashers are 2-2-0 on their current road trip, a major improvement after starting the season with six straight losses. But the road will get tougher tonight in Montreal where Atlanta is just 4-9-1 all-time. In addition, the Canadiens are one of the hottest teams around with a four-game winning streak that has seen the Montreal offense tally 20 goals. The Canadiens have been especially good at jumping on teams early and have outscored their opponents 14-5 in the first period during the streak. Montreal looks like a good pick tonight (-191) according to Dunkel, which has the Canadiens favored by 2 1/2 goals. Dunkel Pick: Montreal (-191). Here are all of today's games.

                      Tuesday's key NHL matchup notes

Pittsburgh Penguins at Minnesota Wild (N/A)

Minnesota is 5-1-0 with one tie all-time against Pittsburgh. The Penguins have never won in Minnesota, going 0-2-0 with a tie.

Marc-Andre Fleury is 0-2-0 with a 5.36 GAA in two career games against the Wild. The Penguins may start Dany Sabourin, who has a 2.08 GAA in four games but has never faced Minnesota.

Atlanta Thrashers at Montreal Canadiens (-200, 6)

Atlanta has gone 3-2-0 after starting the season with six straight losses and firing coach Bob Hartley. The Thrashers are 2-2-0 on a season-high seven-game road trip.

Montreal is riding a four-game winning streak and their offense has been outstanding during the team's current hot streak, scoring 20 goals.

Phoenix Coyotes at St. Louis Blues (-220, 5 1/2)

St. Louis has won four of five home games this season, allowing three goals or fewer in each contest.

Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky has yet to decide on a No. 1 goaltender with Alex Auld and Mikael Tellqvist sharing time. Auld has lost three of his last four starts while Tellqvist is 1-2-0 with a 3.36 GAA this season.

Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames (-200, 6)

Not only have the Predators lost their first four road games, they've been outscored by a remarkable 16-2 margin. The Preds have been shut out in their last two road contests.

Calgary is usually one of the toughest places in the NHL to win, but the Predators are 4-0-1 in their last five visits there.

Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers (+170, 5 1/2)

Eleven different players have scored at least one goal for Detroit (9-2-1) during a five-game winning streak. The Red Wings have outscored opponents 20-9 in that stretch.

The Oilers continue to struggle on the power play. They failed to convert on any of their four opportunities Sunday, and are an NHL-worst 3-for-48 with the man advantage.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets

Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers (+170, 5 ½)

When most people think about Devil’s Night, they usually think about the city of Detroit’s past crime problems on the night before Halloween. The Motor City’s curfew for youngsters is set at 6 P.M. tonight, which will mean kids in Hockeytown will be watching their beloved team go for its sixth consecutive win on television.

The victory won’t come easily based on Detroit’s recent history in Edmonton. Detroit has lost three straight at Rexall Place and has only two victories in the Alberta capital since 1999.

                        Pick: Oilers +170

Atlanta Thrashers at Montreal Canadiens (-200, 6)

Residents of Quebec will be sure to put their doormats in a safe place this evening. Pranksters in the province have been stealing mats from residents for several years and October 30 is locally known as “Mat Night”.

The Canadiens are one team that has not been laying down like a doormat lately. They have won four in a row, but they’ll want to cut down on the seven goals they allowed in their last two contests.

Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk has recorded seven points in four-games during the club’s current road swing.

                        Pick: Thrashers +170

Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames (-200, 6)

The Predators are winless in all four of their road games this season and over bettors have been shut out every time. Nashville’s offense has been non-existent away from the Music City recently, getting outscored 9-0 in their two previous road contests.

Flames netminder Miika Kiprusoff is the last guy Nashville wants to see right now. The Finnish star received a six-year contract extension worth an estimated $35-million dollars on Monday and you know he’ll be fired up for tonight’s game.

“You don't get paid for past performances,” Flames general manager Darryl Sutter told the Associated Press. “He's going into his prime in the next three or four years. I don't see anyone who is going to replace him in that time.”

                        Pick: Under 6

-Alexander Ovechkin, Capitals, scored twice to lead Washington to a 7-1 win at Toronto.

                          MEMORABLE DEBUT

San Jose's Devin Setoguchi, the eighth overall pick in 2005, scored twice in his first NHL game to help the Sharks rally for a 4-2 win at Dallas. Setoguchi tied the game at 2 midway through the third before giving San Jose the lead for good 2:34 later.

                          THIRD TIME NOT A CHARM

Philadelphia defenseman Randy Jones was suspended two games by the NHL on Monday for his violent hit on Boston's Patrice Bergeron, making him the third Flyers player suspended for a dangerous play this season. Bergeron is still out after he was hammered to the boards face-first by Jones in the first period of Philadelphia's 2-1 victory over the Bruins. Steve Downie (20 games) and Jesse Boulerice (25 games) were the other Flyers to be suspended for violent on-ice hits this season.

                          TROUBLE IN TORONTO

                          KEEPING KIPRUSOFF

Miikka Kiprusoff agreed to a $35-million, six-year extension with the Flames on Monday that will keep the star goalie in Calgary through the 2013-14 season. The Flames acquired Kiprusoff from San Jose for a second-round draft pick in November 2003. He's 111-54-23 with four ties for the Flames and helped the team reach the Stanley Cup final in 2004.

                          SPEAKING

''What a night. Break my skate, first period. Second, my glove. Then my teeth. I didn't see myself yet. It's Halloween tomorrow. I don't have to buy a mask.'' - New York Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr on scoring the winning goal after getting bloodied in the mouth earlier in Monday night's 3-1 victory over Tampa Bay.

                          ---

''We're playing a team that's like Tupperware. Once they close the lid and burp it, you're done,'' - San Jose coach Ron Wilson after the Sharks rallied for a 4-2 win at Dallas on Monday night.

                            NBA Today - October 30

                            SCOREBOARD Tuesday, Oct. 30
Utah at Golden State (10:30 p.m. EDT). The Jazz and Warriors open with a rematch of their second round playoff series last season.

Oddsmakers list Golden State as 3 ½-point favorites. The total for the game is set at 214.

                            TRADES

The New Jersey Nets opened two roster spots on Monday, sending swingman Bernard Robinson, center Mile Ilic and cash considerations to the New Orleans Hornets for veteran guard David Wesley. The Nets have told Wesley not to report and the team will waive him and pay the guaranteed portion of his $1.75 million contract, general manager Ed Stefanski said. ... The San Antonio Spurs traded Beno Udrih to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a protected second-round draft pick in 2008.

                            REJECTED

The Seattle SuperSonics may not try to escape their lease at KeyArena through arbitration, a federal judge said Monday. Judge Ricardo S. Martinez called the team's interpretation of the contract ''as errant as a typical Shaquille O'Neal free throw.'' The decision was a victory for the city and means officials may continue to seek a court order forcing the Sonics to play the next three seasons at the NBA's smallest venue. New Sonics chairman Clay Bennett last month issued a demand for arbitration, hoping to buy out the remainder of the lease unless a deal on a new arena could be reached by month's end. In response, the city sued, trying to force the Sonics to honor the terms of a deal reached in the mid-1990s: In exchange for $74 million in renovations to the old Seattle Coliseum, the team agreed to play all of its home games there through Sept. 30, 2010.

                            RETURN

Anfernee ''Penny'' Hardaway is officially back in the NBA, after the Miami Heat placed him on their season-opening roster Monday. Hardaway signed a nonguaranteed contract this summer after a strong tryout. He hasn't played in a regular-season game in nearly two years because of knee problems and has been limited for several seasons by an array of injuries.

                            SPEAKING

''I'm still a Laker. I'm here. I'm ready to play.'' - Kobe Bryant on Monday after an eventful offseason in which the shooting guard demanded a trade, criticized his teammates and called Los Angeles' front office a mess.
