    NHL – Matchup Notes
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Monday's key NHL matchup notes

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers (-150, 5 1/2)

Ten games into the season, the Rangers have scored an NHL-low 16 goals. The one constant for the Rangers has been Henrik Lundqvist, who ranks fourth in the NHL with a 1.90 goals-against average while playing all 10 games.

This is the first of three straight road games for the Lightning (5-3-1), who have been outscored 15-8 in losing all three games away from home.

Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs (-160, 6)

Toronto (5-4-3) has won two straight - both on the road - after winning just once in its previous five games (1-2-2). The Leafs are 5-2-0 with one tie in its last eight home games against Washington.

The Capitals (4-6-0) hope to avoid their second three-game losing streak of the season. They have dropped six of seven after opening the season with three straight wins.

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars (-125), 5)

The Stars went 5-3-0 against the Sharks in 2006-07, but the teams split four meetings at Dallas.

The Sharks have dropped their last two games, scoring only one goal in each contest.

      San Jose at Dallas
The Sharks have played eight of their first 11 games on the road and may be feeling the effects of the travel as they have lost their last two while scoring only one goal in each contest. Dallas returns home after a five-goal outburst at Phoenix on Saturday, including Mike Modano's first multipoint game of the season. The Stars look like a good pick (-125) to take advantage of the road-weary Sharks according to Dunkel, which has Dallas favored by 1. Dunkel Pick: Dallas (-125). Here are all of today's games.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers (-150, 5 ½)

The Lightning have yet to post a road win this season. A trip to Broadway could just be the spark the Bolts need to snap that streak.

Rangers No. 1 netminder Henrik Lundqvist has been overworked this season, appearing in all but 13 seconds of his team's play so far. New York has struggled: they've lost five of their last six games overall and were outscored 14-7 over that span. The Rangers' 16 goals are the fewest in the league and big money players like Chris Drury and Scott Gomez are pointless in their last four games with their new club.

        Pick: Lightning +130

Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs (-160, 6)

The Leafs give up a lot of goals, but they also know how to find the back of the net. Toronto has scored the second-most goals in the league, just one fewer than the 47 scored by Carolina.

Over bettors have cashed in during nine of Toronto's 12 games. Seven of those overs took place at the Air Canada Centre.

The center position is the center of attention when it comes to this club's offensive output. Mats Sundin and Nik Antropov have 33 points combined this season and are both in the top 10 in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, which is awarded to the player who ends up with the most points at season's end.

        Pick: Over 6

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars (-125, 5)

Tonight marks the final game of the Sharks' four-game road trip and the team can't wait to get back home. The schedule maker has not been kind to San Jose. The Sharks played eight of their first 11 games away from the Shark Tank and six of those road contests have been outside the Pacific time zone.

They started the current trip with a big victory in Calgary, but have been outscored 7-2 in two consecutive defeats.

        Pick: Stars -125

          Hockey today - October 29

          SCOREBOARD
          Monday, Oct. 29

Tampa Bay at N.Y. Rangers (7 p.m. EDT). The Lightning look for their first road win against the Rangers, who have an NHL-low 16 goals.

          STARS
          Sunday

          - Ryan Smyth, Avalanche, had a goal and an assist in Colorado's 3-1 win over Minnesota.

          - Mikael Samuelsson, Red Wings, scored a goal and assisted on the game-winning tally with a minute left as Detroit defeated Vancouver 3-2.

          - Mathieu Garon, Oilers, made 31 saves as Edmonton rallied for a 3-2 shootout victory.

          HAPPY RETURNS

Oiler forward Dustin Penner, who helped the Ducks win the Stanley Cup last season, returned to face his former teammates for the first time Sunday night as Edmonton beat the defending champs 3-2 in a shootout. Penner, who was presented with his Stanley Cup ring by Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli and general manager Brian Burke after the game in coach Randy Carlyle's office, was lured away from Anaheim with a five-year, $21.25 million offer sheet that Burke declined to match.

          NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Colorado posted a 3-1 win over Minnesota Sunday night. The win improved the Avalanche to 5-0 at home for the first time since moving to Colorado in 1995.

          SCORING

Detroit left wing Henrik Zetterberg extended his lead atop the NHL scoring list to 21 points with an assist in the Red Wings' 3-2 win over Vancouver Sunday night. Zetterberg, second on the team in scoring (68) despite missing 19 games to injury, Zetterberg has a point in all 12 games this season. Zetterberg's linemate, center Pavel Datsyuk, who also had an assist against the Canucks, extended his point streak to seven games (2 goals, 7 assists).

          SPEAKING

''You never fully understand what it's going to be like until you come back. That first period was just a lot of emotions and memories running through my mind. Seeing the Ducks jerseys on the other side of the bench and knowing I'm wearing an Oilers one, it was an interesting feeling.'' - Edmonton forward Dustin Penner on his return to Anaheim on Sunday night. Penner and the Oilers defeated his former teammates 3-2 in a shootout.

NOTE: Because the "write-up" for tonight's game is now available, the NFL Dunkel is being re-posted.

            NFL
            Dunkel Index

            Green Bay at Denver
Denver is coming off a solid 31-28 win last week at home over the Steelers, but that hasn't been a common occurrence for Mike Shanahan's troops at Invesco Field. Prior to that win, the Broncos had lost six of eight at home. Much of the problem is due to an attack that ranks fifth in total offense, but just 26th in scoring offense. Denver will need to be better in the red zone against Green Bay tonight. The Packers have enjoyed a rebirth of sorts under Mike McCarthy and come in with a surprising 5-1 mark. No one has thrived more than Brett Favre, who has thrown for 1,715 yards and nine TDs so far. The Packers have played well on the road, winning seven of their last 10, including both games this season (at NY Giants and Minnesota). The Pack have also won five of their last six right after a bye week, tied with Baltimore and New England for the third best record in the league. Green Bay looks like a good underdog pick (+3) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Packers favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Green Bay (+3).

            MONDAY, OCTOBER 29

Game 229-230: Green Bay at Denver
Dunkel Ratings: Green Bay 131.769; Denver 128.577
Dunkel Line: Green Bay by 3; 46
Vegas Line: Denver by 3; 41
Dunkel Pick: Green Bay (+3); Over
