The expected starters for Game 3 are Daisuke Matsuzaka for the Red Sox and Josh Fogg for the Rockies. Game 4, also in Colorado, follows on Sunday with the probable starters likely being Jon Lester for Boston and Aaron Cook for Colorado.

The rest of the Week 8 schedule includes Philadelphia at Minnesota (+1), Cleveland at St. Louis (+3), Oakland at Tennessee (-7.5), Buffalo at the Jets (-3), Jacksonville at Tampa Bay (-3.5) and New Orleans at San Francisco (+2.5).

In college football this weekend six of the Top 10 teams in the nation are in action on Saturday. Also on tap on Saturday is No. 9 Florida vs. No. 20 Georgia (+8.5), No. 1 Ohio State at No. 24 Penn State (+4) and No. 18 California at No. 7 Arizona State (-3).

It’s another busy weekend on the ice starting with five NHL contests on Friday. The Friday slate includes Montreal at Carolina, Vancouver at Washington, San Jose at Detroit, Buffalo at Florida and Colorado at Calgary.

The are 12 NHL games on Saturday, highlighted by Montreal at Pittsburgh, Ottawa at New Jersey, Buffalo at Tampa Bay, Philadelphia at Boston and Washington at St. Louis. The rest of the Saturday schedule includes San Jose at Columbus, Carolina at the Islanders, Toronto at the Rangers, Florida at Nashville, Atlanta at Chicago, Dallas at Phoenix and Edmonton at Los Angeles.

The CFL regular season is winding down this weekend with Week 18 kicking off on Friday night. BC at Hamilton (+13) gets the action started followed by Saskatchewan at Edmonton (+4). Two more games follow on Saturday, as Winnipeg visits Toronto (-6) and Montreal faces Calgary (-7.5).

The Chase for the Nextel Cup resumes at Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend with the Pep Boys Auto 500. Jimmie Johnson won when NASCAR raced at Atlanta earlier this season and he’s the co-favorite with points leader Jeff Gordon this weekend at 5/1.

Friday's List of 13: Ohio State athletics: very big business

A few days ago, the Wall Street Journal ran an article by Jon Weinbach, about the athletic department at Ohio State; the info in the list below comes from that article.

        13) Ohio State has an athletic budget of $109,382,222, biggest in country, which covers 980 athletes on 36 teams.

        12) Texas has the next biggest budget ($107,600,000) but that only covers twenty teams.

        11) Included in the Buckeyes’ budget is $65,000 in private jet time for basketball coach Thad Matta, for recruiting trips of longer than 200 miles.

        10) Jim Tressel has 225 hours of private jet time in his budget for recruiting purposes.

        9) The men’s, women’s hockey teams have a $75,000 hockey treadmill/training device. The Anaheim Ducks, who won the Stanley Cup last year, don’t have one, saying they have neither the space or resources for it.

        8) The women’s hockey team’s budget is $1.2M; their income last year was $1,642.

        7) Ohio State’s athletic budget has grown 46% in the last five years.

        6) The football team had $57M in revenue last year, showing a profit of $36M last year, just ahead of Florida ($34M).

        5) The Buckeye hoop team made a $9M profit; football and basketball were only two sports in Columbus that made money last year, but the athletic department is one of only 19 in country that showed a profit.

        4) It cost $19M to renovate a football practice facility, which now has a players’ only entrance.

        3) Texas Longhorns spent $152,585 last year, on Gatorade and Power Bars. Nothing else.

        2) The utility bill for Ohio State’s football stadium last year: $731,309.

        1) Buckeyes have 46 cheerleaders, four student mascots; their budget: $169,000.

Both sides are hot; Fresno won four in row, scoring 38.7 ppg in last three games, despite losing five fumbles in those games. Broncos won last five in a row; they won 45-31 at Louisiana Tech, their first road tilt since their winning streak got snapped at Washington Sept 8. Saturday's Games

                Top 10 Games

South Florida had bubble burst at Rutgers last week, can still be Big East champs; they covered last four games that followed a loss. UConn covered six of last seven tries as home dog; they have benefitted in two games from horrible calls. Home side won both series meetings in Big East play, but it was 33 degrees out when USF lost here late in '05 season. Bulls have win at Auburn, so they can play on road. UConn's only loss: 17-16 at Virginia.

Wisconsin won its last two games vs Indiana: 41-24/52-17; they were 18-23/330 passing vs Hoosiers LY in 52-17 win (539-279 in total yardage). Indiana needs one win to become bowl eligible; they're 0-5 (2-3 vs spread) in last five such games. Badgers won 44-3 over bad Northern Illinois last week, after losing pair of Big 11 games. IU allowed 88 points in losing last two games, giving up 560 rushing yards. QB Lewis fumbled three times in second half last week, in game Indiana had legitimate chance to win.

Texas A&M covered 14 of its last 20 home games, but unbeaten Kansas (have played 117th-ranked schedule, out of 119) comes to town; they lost last three visits here by 14-pt average. Aggies are 7-1 vs Kansas, but Jayhawks have road wins at K-State and Colorado, so they're legit. Both A&M losses came on the road (34-17 at Miami, 35-7 at Tex Tech). Aggies have 1,094 yards on ground in last four games, all of which stayed under the total.

USC is underdog for first time since '03; they had been favorite of 6+ points in each of previous 53 games. Visiting team covered eight of last 10 SC-Oregon games- Trojans won last couple trips here, 44-33/45-13, but covered just one of last five road games in Pac-10. Ducks averaged 50.5 ppg in their six wins; their loss was 31-24 at Cal, when Oregon player fumbled on 1-yard line trying to stretch over goal line. Last five USC games stayed under total

Florida won 15 of last 17 vs Georgia, but last five series games were all decided by seven or less points; Dawgs scored 14 pts or less in seven of last nine series games. Meyer covered one of his last nine as roade favorite, Richt is 9-2-1 vs spread as road dog, 6-1-1 off a bye. Tebow is banged up, sat out some practice time this week; Gators are 2-2 in SEC, winning 30-24 at Ole Miss, 45-37 last week at Kentucky. Georgia scored 12,14 in its losses.

Maryland covered six of last seven vs erratic Clemson side that is ranked #118 in country in special teams. Last three Terp-Tiger games were decided by total of 8 points. Maryland lost in final 0:16 vs Virginia last week; their last two games were decided by a total of three points. Clemson's last four wins are all by 23+ pts but they have losses at Georgia Tech (13-3), vs Virginia Tech in between (41-23). Four of last five Clemson games went over.

Rumors are strong that Fulmer could get ax after season unless Vols beat South Carolina, finish strong; they've been outscored 55-7 in second half of losses at Florida, Alabama, an indication team goes in tank when they get behind in second half. Carolina was 6-1 until 17-6 home loss to Vanderbilt last week; now they're juggling QB's and are 2-24 on 3rd down in last two games. Vols covered just two of last 11 tries as home favorite. Spurrier is 7-1 vs spread in last eight tries as road underdog.

West Virginia won last 12 games vs Rutgers, winning in last two visits here, 35-30/27-14- road team covered four of five in series. WVa covered eight of last 10 as road favorite; Rutgers is 12-4 vs spread in last 16 tries as home dog. Knights handed USF its first loss last week; they scored 68 points in winning last two games, after pair of home losses (34-24/28-23) to Maryland, Cincinnati. West Virginia's six wins are by 38-25-17-41-41-25 points.

Penn State's 17-10 home win vs Ohio State in '05 was Buckeyes' last loss in Big 11 and only JoePa win in last five series games; OSU lost five of last seven visits to this site. Home side covered last nine series games-- Lions covered five of their last six tries as home dog. OSU's 24-17 win over Michigan State last week is misleading; both Spartan TD's were scored by defense, after the Buckeyes grabbed 24-0 lead in 3rd quarter. Penn State is 5-0 at home. Rain is expected for this game.

California lost last two games, giving up 61 points; they've only held one of seven foes under 24 this season. Erickson is 14-3 as home fave in Pac-10 play; his Sun Devils have outscored foes 136-29 so far in '07, but they've also fallen behind 14-0/19-0 at home- if they do that here, they ain't winning. Bears won four in row in series, taking last two visits here, 55-38/51-23. Problem for Cal is they've lost last two Saturdays; ASU had last week off.

                Rest of Card

-- Purdue covered just three of last 11 tries as home favorite; in last five games overall, they're 1-3-1 vs spread. Northwestern is on 4-0 spread run, winning last three SU- they're 5-3 this year.

-- Wake Forest covered two of last 14 as home favorite; dog has covered four of last five Wake-UNC games, but Deacons are on five-game win streak, scoring 35 ppg in their last four games.

-- Louisville won its last two games vs Pitt, 42-30/48-24; Pitt beat Cincinnati last week, ending 4-game skid- they ran ball 227-260
yds last two games. Cards lost last two at home (yielding 41 pg).

-- After scoring total of 23 points in losses last two weeks, Illini can become bowl eligible by beating Ball State squad that lost at Nebraska 41-40. Five of last six Ball State games went over total.

-- Florida State switches back to Weatherford at QB; the truth is they don't have a decent QB, but they covered eight of last nine vs Duke if fave of less than 32. Duke covered 9 of 11 on road.

-- Minnesota gave up 394 rushing yards to I-AA North Dakota State last week, lost 27-21, now visit red-hot Michigan (6-0 since 0-2 start) in stadium where Gophers won 23-20 in last visit ('05).

-- Auburn covered last five games, losing only on last-second TD pass at LSU last week; they covered five of last six games that followed loss, but just one of last ten as double digit fave.

-- Missouri covered nine of last 12 home games; they're 5-0-1 vs spread when laying 20+ points. Iowa State is 1-5 vs spread in its last six road games. Tigers are averaging 40.1 ppg this season.

-- Vanderbilt is 2-0 as home favorite in '07 (4-7 in last 11); if they win this and one other game, they go bowling for first time since '82. Miami OH covered three of last four tries as road underdog.

-- Akron covered the first game after its last seven byes; they're 8-0 vs Buffalo, winning last two visits here, 38-21/13-7. Buffalo won its last two at home, beating Ohio (31-10), Toledo (43-33).

South Florida is coming off its first loss of the season last Thursday night at Rutgers and could still find its way into the BCS title hunt by winning out. However, the Bulls are not concerned about that and are simply hoping to win the Big East title. Florida QB Tim Tebow is returning to his home of Jacksonville for the first time as a starter and will be extra motivated despite nursing a shoulder injury. Tebow is coming off an outstanding performance in a 45-37 win at Kentucky last week, throwing for four touchdowns and running for another. "I've see quarterbacks who can run, but not with that kind of power and toughness," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. "And he's throwing the ball extremely well. He's a leader, and he's just tough. And that makes that whole football team tough." EDGE: FLORIDA
The Bulldogs are coming off a bye week that enabled them to get healthy. Marcus Washington could return to action at middle linebacker after missing the previous game with a shoulder injury. "The bye week gave me a little bit of extra time to get healthy," Washington said. "Now, I'm going to come out and practice this week and tackle full go, and we'll see what happens this weekend." Still, Knowshon Moreno is expected to make his second straight start at RB due to injuries to Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin, but he has been named one of four captains this week after rushing for a career-high 157 yards in a 20-17 win over Vanderbilt. The Cornhuskers have lost their last three conference games by a combined score of 122-34. Texas is 5-1 vs. Nebraska since Osborne retired from coaching. EDGE: TEXAS

Clemson at Maryland (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

The Terrapins are coming off a tough 18-17 home loss to Virginia last Saturday after winning their previous two games by a combined 12 points. If Maryland hopes to make a bowl game, this is the team's best bet to get a key quality victory since three of the last four games are on the road and the only home game remaining is against Boston College. SLIGHT EDGE: MARYLAND
Clemson's offense got a major confidence boost in a 70-14 win over Central Michigan last week. The Aggies will surprisingly be facing their first ranked foe of the season and are tied atop the Big 12 North with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. They are hoping their triple-option offense will continue to cause problems for opponents after rushing for 359 yards in a 36-14 win at Nebraska last Saturday. The Gamecocks have scored just two field goals in the last six quarters after a surprising 17-6 home loss to Vanderbilt last Saturday. The team's offense has been a major concern for head coach Steve Spurrier, who suffered his first career loss to the Commodores in 15 games. "This should not be a shock to our team," Spurrier said. "This should not be a shock. Hopefully, it will straighten them out." EDGE: TENNESSEE
Spurrier remains undecided about who will start at QB after Chris Smelley and Blake Mitchell combined to throw three interceptions in last week's loss. "All the quarterbacks practiced tonight - Tommy Beecher, Chris Smelley and Blake Mitchell," Spurrier said. "We'll find one to start somewhere in that group, hopefully by Saturday." EDGE: TENNESSEE
Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer is 13-1 lifetime vs. South Carolina but only 4-8 during his career against Spurrier. Fulmer called a rare Sunday practice after his team suffered a devastating 41-17 loss to Alabama last Saturday. The Vols committed a season-high 11 penalties for 81 yards. "Both of us are in the mix for the Eastern Division championship, so you have a game that is crucial, both schools coming off tough losses," Fulmer said. "We want to get back on the right track." College Football Top 25
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ohio State Buckeyes held on to the top spot in the college football Top 25 this week, but the rest of the Top 5 went through a big shakeup.

Out of the Top 5 this week is former No. 2 South Florida, while Oregon enters the Top 5 in their place. The rest of the Top 5 saw Boston College up to No. 2, LSU up to No. 3 and Oklahoma holding steady at No. 4.

The biggest losers of the week were a pair of “south” teams, as South Florida and South Carolina both dropped nine positions after big losses. Also taking large drops were California down eight spots and Kentucky, which fell six places.

The biggest gainers of the week were Arizona State, Florida and Michigan. All three schools moved up five positions.

There were four new schools in this week’s Top 25, as Virginia, Alabama, Penn State and Rutgers all found their way in. Exiting to make way for the new blood were Tennessee, Texas Tech, Cincinnati and Kansas State.

                    1. Ohio State – 8-0 (1) – The Buckeyes retained top spot in the rankings after defeating Michigan State 24-17 last week. Ohio State travels to No. 24 Penn State this week in what could be a tough Big Ten matchup.

                    2. Boston College – 7-0 (3) – The Eagles moved up one spot despite not even taking the field last week. Boston College gets their biggest test of the season so far when they face No. 8 Virginia Tech on the road this week.

                    3. LSU – 7-1 (5) – The Tigers climbed back into the Top 3 after holding off Auburn 30-24 last week. LSU heads to No. 22 Alabama this week with first place in the SEC West on the line.

                    4. Oklahoma – 7-1 (4) – The Sooners held onto No. 4 after knocking off Iowa State 17-7 last week. Oklahoma is off this week before taking on 6-2 Texas A&M on November 3.

                    5. Oregon – 6-1 (7) – The Ducks entered the Top 5 after ripping Washington 55-34 last week. Oregon gets their biggest game of the season this week when they travel to No. 9 USC.

                    6. West Virginia – 6-1 (7) – The Mountaineers climbed over Mississippi State 38-13 last week. West Virginia has a road game at No. 25 Rutgers this week.

                    7. Arizona State – 7-0 (12) – The Red Devils moved into the Top 10 even though they were off last week. Arizona State can prove they’re for real this week if they can defeat No. 18 California.

                    8. Virginia Tech – 6-1 (11) – The Hokies also found their way into the Top 10 despite getting last week off. Virginia Tech has a tough home game against No. 2 Boston College this week.

                    9. Florida – 5-2 (14) – The Gators put an end to their short losing streak with a 45-37 win over Kentucky last week. Florida’s ride through the SEC continues this week with a game at Georgia.

                    9. USC – 6-1 (13) – The Trojans blanked Notre Dame 38-0 last week to vault back into the Top 10. USC has a tough road game this week at No. 5 Oregon.

                    11. South Florida – 6-1 (2) – The Bulls tumbled down the rankings after losing to Rutgers 30-27. South Florida will try to rebound this week versus 6-1 Connecticut.

                    12. Kansas – 7-0 (15) – The Jayhawks defeated Colorado 19-14 last week to stay undefeated. Kansas travels to 6-2 Texas A&M this week.

                    13. Missouri – 6-1 (15) – The Tigers blasted Texas Tech 41-10 last week. Missouri has an easy game at home versus 1-7 Iowa State this week.

                    14. Kentucky – 6-2 (8) – The Wildcats fell out of the Top 10 after losing to Florida 45-37 last week. Kentucky gets Mississippi at home this week.

                    15. South Carolina – 6-2 (6) – The Gamecocks suffered a shocking 17-6 loss to Vanderbilt last week that shot them down the rankings. South Carolina needs a win this week against 4-3 Tennessee.

                    16. Hawaii – 7-0 (17) – The Warriors were off last week after beating San Jose State 42-25 back on Oct. 12. Hawaii returns to the field this week versus 4-4 New Mexico State.

                    17. Texas – 6-2 (19) – The Longhorns ran over Baylor 31-10 last week. Texas takes on 4-4 Nebraska at home this week.

                    19. Michigan – 6-2 (24) – The Wolverines kept moving up the rankings after defeating Illinois 27-17 last week. Michigan should easily knock off 1-7 Minnesota this week.

                    20. Georgia – 5-2 (21) – The Bulldogs were off last week after edging Vanderbilt 20-17 back on Oct. 13. Georgia has a tough matchup with No. 9 Florida this week.

                    21. Virginia – 7-1 (-) – The Cavaliers scraped past Maryland 18-17 last week. Virginia heads to 2-5 N.C. State this weekend.

                    22. Alabama – 6-2 (-) – The Crimson Tide got into the rankings after crushing Tennessee 41-17 last week. Alabama gets a break this week to prepare for No. 3 LSU on Nov. 3.

                    23. Auburn – 5-3 (18) – The Tigers slipped five spots in the rankings after losing to LSU 30-24 last week. Auburn needs a win versus Mississippi this week to stay in the Top 25.

                    24. Penn State – 6-2 (-) – The Nittany Lions rejoined the Top 25 after defeating Indiana 36-31 last week. Penn State takes on No. 1 Ohio State in an important Big Ten matchup this week.

                    25. Rutgers – 5-2 (-) – The Scarlet Knights entered the rankings basement after knocking off former No. 2 South Florida 30-27 last week. Rutgers gets another Top 25 opponent in No. 6 West Virginia this week.

                            Friday, October 26

BC Lions at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+12 ½, 49)
                            Friday, Oct. 26, 6:30 p.m. ET

BC is the CFL’s best team and Hamilton is its worst. But laying 12 ½ points on the road? I can’t do that on principle alone.

However, there aren’t many reasons to take the Ticats this Friday either, even with all those points. The season was a lost cause long ago and head coach Charlie Taaffe has decided to clear the locker room of bad seeds by sending players home with games left on the schedule. That might help in 2008 but Hamilton’s back-to-back pastings at Saskatchewan’s hands show how Taaffe’s dismissals aren’t making for a smooth conclusion to 2007.

I seem to have some weird knack for calling Hamilton games. I’m 12-4 this season in calling Ticats results and the paydays have been all over the board – three wins taking Hamilton, three taking its opponent, four overs and two unders. This feels like an under week for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost is the fact that Hamilton can’t score worth a lick. The Lions have also been held to about 25 points per game over their last four road games, and an over play depends almost entirely on BC’s output. Then there’s the likelihood of a cool, rainy evening at Ivor Wynne on Friday. It looks like an ugly one.

                            Pick: Under 49

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (+4, 50 ½)
                            Friday, Oct. 26, 9:30 p.m. ET

The Riders are 4-0 SU and ATS since Week 14. They say they’re motivated by the mathematical possibility of finishing first in the West Division. But it’s hard to put much stock in either the numbers or the words.

The most recent pair of wins came against the sad-sack Tabbies while the preceding victory came against a Henry Burris-less Calgary squad. And as for the Riders’ hopes of a division title, well, a BC win in Hamilton could put an end to those dreams before kickoff at Commonwealth.

Saskatchewan clinched a home-field playoff game and the financial windfall that accompanies it. The Riders are virtually guaranteed to play Calgary in the West semifinal in a couple of weeks. So what will motivate them on a cool night in Edmonton?

Edmonton’s lost season should have drawn to a close already, but Montreal’s struggles have extended a lifeline to the Eskimos. They’ve responded with a couple of decent efforts against BC, losing both but covering the spread in each defeat. The Esks are playing better than expected despite new faces scattered through the lineup. I’m counting on a bit of a Riders letdown this week, so I’ll take the points despite Edmonton’s injury list.

                            Pick: Eskimos +4

                            Saturday, October 27

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts (-6, 47 ½)
                            Saturday, Oct. 27, 3 p.m. ET

There are a lot of reasons to like the Argonauts and just as many to dislike the Bombers this week.

Toronto has been a payout machine, going 8-1 ATS since Week 9. The Argos covered the spread in both games against Winnipeg during that run and now boast an 8-1 ATS mark against East Division teams in 2007. The Boatmen have also won and covered in each of their last five games, allowing only 13.6 points per game and winning each by at least a touchdown.

The Argos can vault into first place in the East with a win. Toronto is already the host city for the Grey Cup but the Argos’ postseason could be even sweeter if they can make Rogers Centre the venue for the East Final as well.

Winnipeg, in the meantime, has to deal with fresh injuries galore. Rob Pikula hurt his ankle during practice this week, leaving the punting role to a newcomer and the kicking role up for grabs. Charles Roberts is questionable with a thigh bruise. DE Doug Brown is out with a broken orbital bone.

Even more troublingly, the Bombers recent passing game hasn’t met its early-season standards. Winnipeg has led the East for a long time but its reign ends on Saturday afternoon.

                            Pick: Argonauts -6

Montreal Alouettes at Calgary Stampeders (-7, 52)
                            Saturday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m. ET

Anthony Calvillo took an indefinite leave of absence from the Als this week due to his wife’s serious illness. Calvillo’s situation has cast a pall over the Alouettes and understandably so. He’s pure class, one of the most respected players in the CFL, and has far bigger things to worry about than the outcome of a football game.

"A good friend and his family are suffering. It makes you not want to go run around," Calvillo’s long-time teammate Ben Cahoon told reporters. "It makes you want to know what you can do to help out.”

The game will go on, however, and Montreal will play both Jason Maas and Marcus Brady at quarterback this Saturday. It’s an important game for the Als in terms of the standings, as they haven’t clinched a playoff berth yet. But “important game” doesn’t carry much weight among the Alouettes this week. They’re 1-5 SU and 0-6 ATS over their last half-dozen games and Calvillo’s plight won’t help that improve.

Calgary has a lot to sort out before the playoffs start. The Stamps will play hard this Saturday despite knowing they’ll finish third in the West. Their 4-3 defense is still so new and Henry Burris wants a quality outing before the postseason.

                            Pick: Stampeders -7

                            Last week: 2-2

                            Year to date: 32-32

                              Oakland at Tennessee
The Titans had to play last week without Vince Young at QB, but found that Kerry Collins could move the offense well enough to put 38 points on the board against Houston. Young should be back this week and will look to improve in the red zone where Tennessee was just 2-for-9 and had to settle for eight Rod Bironas FGs. Those struggles pale in comparison, though, to what Oakland has been going through lately. The Raiders have managed only 98 yards rushing over the last two games after averaging 194.3 through the first four weeks. That has put the pressure on QB Daunte Culpepper to step up and the veteran has failed to deliver in back-to-back losses to San Diego and Kansas City. Coach Lane Kiffin is staying mum as to whether Culpepper or Josh McCown will start this week. But either should have a difficult time against a Titan defense that is allowing a league-low 59.7 rushing yards per game and ranks sixth in total defense (290.0 ypg). Tennessee looks like a good pick to cover (-7) according to Dunkel, which has the Titans favored by 18 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Tennessee (-7). Here are all of this week's picks.
