          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Schilling brings postseason experience, Jimenez playoff exuberance on Thursday night
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOSTON -- Curt Schilling brings a wealth of postseason experience into Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night.

Ubaldo Jimenez? He totes a ton of playoff exuberance - along with a million-dollar smile and a 100 mph fastball.

The 40-year-old Schilling can't match Colorado's 23-year-old rookie on the radar gun, but he sports one of the best postseason resumes in baseball: 10-2 with 23 walks, 116 strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA.

''With the miles that have been put on his shoulder and the games he's pitched, he's not the guy that can pitch 96, 97 anymore,'' Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Wednesday. ''But he can still pitch very effectively and still navigate his way through some lineups.''

After a trying 2007 season in which he went 9-8 and spent seven weeks on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder, Schilling went 2-0 in the AL playoffs with one walk, 12 strikeouts and a 3.38 ERA.

He twice faced Cleveland ace Fausto Carmona in the AL championship series, which he said gave him extra juice. He hopes to recapture that adrenaline rush in facing Jimenez, who isn't a household name yet.

''I'm probably just as worried when you face somebody that isn't well known,'' Schilling said Wednesday. ''Because those end up being guys that everybody does know after a game like tomorrow. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about his stuff, and he's done well in the postseason, which means he's answered the first question, which was, 'Can he handle the pressure?'''

Jimenez has a 1.59 ERA in two postseason starts, allowing two runs on eight hits over 11 1-3 innings. He's walked eight batters and struck out 11.

''That stuff will be electric,'' Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. ''That's the kind of stuff that every once in a while, you step back and you go, 'Wow! That's special.' He's shown some special poise for a young pitcher. And he's got good stuff. Anytime you get a swing-and-a-miss pitch against a good offensive club and you're playing in a small park, that's important.''

Jimenez was rushed to the majors just after the All-Star break when the Rockies were in the midst of losing three-fifths of their starting rotation to injuries. The Dominican righty went 4-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 15 starts while holding opponents to a .228 batting average.

The bigger the game, the better he was.

With the Rockies needing a win on the last day of the season to force an NL wild-card tiebreaker with San Diego, Jimenez held Arizona to one hit over 6 1-3 innings and struck out a career-high 10 in a game the Rockies won 4-3.

In his first playoff start, against Philadelphia, Jimenez allowed one run on three hits over 6 1-3 innings of Colorado's 2-1 series-clinching win. Against Arizona in the NLCS, he gave up one run on five hits over five innings in Game 2, which the Rockies won in 11 innings.

Jimenez said he isn't intimidated by either Boston's power-packed lineup or its history-steeped ballpark.

''I don't feel any pressure,'' he said. ''I'm just really excited about it.''

            Baseball Today - October 25

            SCOREBOARD
            Thursday, Oct. 25

Colorado at Boston (8:29 p.m. EDT). Ubaldo Jimenez tries to help the Rockies rebound, facing Curt Schilling in Game 2 of the World Series.

            STARS

-Josh Beckett, Red Sox, allowed six hits in seven innings, struck out nine and walked one, improving to 4-0 with a 1.20 ERA in the postseason this year, and Boston pounded Colorado 13-1.

            RED SOX ROCKIN'

Back in the World Series with no Bambino's curse to worry about, Boston flattened Colorado 13-1 in Wednesday night's opener. The Red Sox set a record for runs and victory margin in an opener and finished with 17 hits, becoming the first club to hit eight doubles in a Series game since 1925.

            QUITE A START

Josh Beckett started the World Series with a rare feat, fanning Willy Taveras, Kaz Matsui, Matt Holliday and Todd Helton to become the first pitcher to strike out the first four batters in a Series game since Sandy Koufax got five Yankees to start the 1963 Series, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

            PEDROIA'S POWER

Dustin Pedroia became only the second player to hit a leadoff home run in a World Series opener, lining a shot over the Green Monster in Boston's 13-1 win over Colorado on Wednesday. Pedroia was the 31st player overall to homer in his first career at-bat in the Series. He became the 18th player to hit a leadoff home run in any Series game and the first since Johnny Damon did so for the Red Sox in Game 4 in 2004.

            HOPE FOR ROCKIES

Boston routed Colorado 13-1 on Wednesday, spoiling the Rockies' first World Series game in franchise history. The winner of the World Series opener has gone on to win nine of the last 10 championships and 62 of 102 overall. While the 1959 Chicago White Sox and 1996 Atlanta Braves both won their openers by 11 runs, they went on to lose the Series.

            NEW SKIPPER?

The Yankees could hire a new manager by the end of this week. After spending two seasons as New York's first-base coach, Tony Pena interviewed Wednesday to replace departed manager Joe Torre. Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi interviewed Monday and bench coach Don Mattingly on Tuesday. Hank Steinbrenner, son of owner George Steinbrenner, said Wednesday the team wasn't planning any more interviews.

            SPEAKING

"That's not the way we drew it up.'' - Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, after his team lost Game 1 of the World Series 13-1 following an eight-day layoff. Colorado had won 21 of their last 22, losing just once in 38 days before running into Boston's buzz saw.

            SEASONS
            Oct. 25

1911 - Fred Merkle's 10th-inning sacrifice fly scored Larry Doyle to give the New York Giants a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. The victory cut the A's lead in the Series to 3-2.

1981 - Steve Yeager and Pedro Guerrero hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the World Series.

1986 - The New York Mets rallied for three runs with two outs in the 10th inning against the Boston Red Sox and pushed the World Series to a decisive seventh game. The tie-breaking run scored on Boston first baseman Bill Buckner's error on Mookie Wilson's slow grounder.

1987 - The Minnesota Twins, behind Frank Viola, won their first World Series championship by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in Game 7, becoming the first team to win four home games.

2003 - Florida's Josh Beckett threw a shutout to lead the Marlins to a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees to win the World Series. Pitching on three days rest, Beckett, who was named MVP of the series, allowed five hits in Game 6 as Florida won its second title in seven seasons.

2005 - Geoff Blum homered in the top of the 14th inning in his first World Series at-bat to help the Chicago White Sox defeat Houston 7-5 in Game 3. At 5 hours, 41 minutes, it was the longest game by time in Series history and matched the longest in innings. The Boston Red Sox and Brooklyn Dodgers also went 14 innings in Game 2 of the 1916 World Series.

Today's birthdays: Joe Nelson 33; Pedro Martinez 36.

                Thursday's key NHL matchup notes

Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Bruins (-150, 5 1/2)

Chicago goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin has a 2.85 GAA in 2007-08, but has alternated wins and losses en route to a 3-4-0 record. He's 0-4-0 with two ties and a 3.42 GAA in Boston since last winning there in October 1996.

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-150, 5)

Despite a wealth of offensive talent, the Rangers have scored a league-low 13 goals, getting shut out three times already.

St. Louis Blues at Columbus Blue Jackets (-125, 5)

Kariya recorded five goals and five assists in eight games against the Blue Jackets in 2006-07. He has 14 goals and 20 assists in 31 career games against Columbus.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins (-200, 6 1/2)

Crosby and his teammates will look to increase their offensive output against a Toronto club that's last in the NHL with 42 goals allowed. The Maple Leafs (3-4-3) have dropped four of their last five, giving up 22 goals in the defeats.

Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning (-120, 6)

Tampa Bay has won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two clubs.

Atlanta Thrashers at Nashville Predators (-145, 6)

Atlanta will look for its fourth straight victory over Nashville (2-6-0), which also set team records with 51 wins and 110 points last season. The Predators look to avoid matching a franchise record with a seventh consecutive loss, while trying to prevent a third straight shutout when they face the Thrashers for the first time since 2005-06.

Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers (+130, 5)

The Wild defeated the Oilers 2-0 at home on Oct. 10, and is 8-1-0 with two ties in its last 11 visits to Edmonton.

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-220, 5 1/2)

The Ducks looks to make it 11 straight home wins over the Pacific Division rival Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night when the teams meet for the first time this season.

Dallas Stars at Los Angeles Kings (+110, 5 1/2)

Marty Turco is 3-1-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average this season, but lost his only road start of 2007-08 when he allowed four goals in a season-opening 4-3 loss to Colorado on Oct. 3. He's won his last seven starts versus the Kings, allowing just 11 goals in that span.

                  RECORD NIGHT

                  RALLY TIME

Calgary fell behind 3-0 in the first 10 minutes of its game with Minnesota on Wednesday night, but rallied to score five unanswered goals for the victory. The Flames dealt the Wild their first regulation loss in nine games this season.

                  ZEROLESS ZETTERBERG

                  LINE JUGGLING

Washington juggled its offensive line combinations and produced its biggest scoring output of the season in a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. Chris Clark was moved to the top line with Alexander Ovechkin and recorded his first two goals and points of the season. The Capitals entered the day as one of only two clubs in the NHL that had yet to score more than three goals in a game, a drought that extended 16 games to a 7-1 victory over the Lightning on March 18 last season.

                  SNAPPED

Alex Tanguay broke an 18-game goalless drought that dated to last season by recording the tying and go-ahead tallies in Calgary's 5-3 win over Minnesota on Wednesday night. ... Philadelphia's five-game winning streak ended with a 4-3 loss at Florida. The game began a season-long eight-game road trip for the Flyers.

                  CAPITAL GAIN

Washington right wing Alexander Semin came off injured reserve prior to Wednesday night's game against Tampa Bay. Semin, who scored 38 goals last season, missed six of the season's first seven games because of a sprained right ankle.

                  SIDELINED

Edmonton placed defenseman Sheldon Souray on the injured list with a sprained left shoulder and recalled Ladislav Smid on Wednesday. ... New York Rangers forward Ryan Callahan will be sidelined indefinitely because of a sprained knee. New York is already without Martin Straka (broken finger) and agitator Sean Avery (shoulder) up front.

                  SPEAKING

''For the last few weeks, the puck seemed to stick to my gear. Now it was bouncing in areas I didn't want it to bounce and it was giving them second opportunities on a couple of the goals.'' - Philadelphia goalie Martin Biron after Wednesday night's 4-3 loss at Florida. Biron had won six of his first seven starts with a .952 save percentage.

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets

Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Bruins (-150, 5 ½)

It’s been a long time since hockey fans actually got excited to see these two teams play. With a slew of young superstars set to take the ice tonight, this matchup should now be well worth the price of admission. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews have led Chicago to a 5-4 record so far this year while sophomore Phil Kessel has the Bruins off to a 5-3 start. The Blackhawks have scored four goals or more in each of their last three games with Kane and Toews combining for 12 points during that stretch.

                    Pick: Over 5 ½

Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning (-120, 6)

The Lightning have been struggling lately, losing three of their last four games and allowing four or more goals in all three losses. The Flyers, on the other hand, are coming off their first loss in six games. Philadelphia has scored at least three goals in every game this season. Tampa goalie Johan Holmqvist could be in for a long night.

                    Pick: Flyers +100

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-150, 5)

This could be the perfect game for Martin Brodeur to break out of his early-season slump. The Rangers are having all kinds of problems on offense and sit at the very bottom of the league in goal scoring. They have lost four straight games including back-to-back 1-0 losses in their last two games. Brodeur has enjoyed playing against his division rival over the years, going 38-15-1-15 with seven shutouts and a 2.07 GAA against them over his career.

                    Pick: Devils +130

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Georgia Tech senior running back Tashard Choice, who leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing for the second straight season, will undergo right knee surgery on Tuesday. Choice suffered the injury in the first quarter of last Saturday's 34-10 victory against Army. An MRI test on Monday determined that surgery would be necessary, and that the operation will determine how long the durable running back will be sidelined. Choice will not play in the Yellow Jackets' next game against No. 8 Virginia Tech on November 1, Yellow Jackets coach Chan Gailey said Monday. It will be the first time Choice has missed a game in his three years at Georgia Tech. Choice has played most of this season with a sore hamstring but entered last week's contest with three straight 100-yard games. He is averaging 108 yards per game, which ranks 15th nationally. Georgia Tech is 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the ACC's Coastal Division.

                          Colorado at Boston
Colorado's momentum came to a screeching halt last night as the Red Sox dominated with a 13-1 win in the opener. Whether it was the eight-day layoff, Josh Beckett or the awe of being in the World Series for the first time, the Rockies looked nothing like the team that had won 21 of 22 coming in. Now it's the Red Sox who look unstoppable as they have outscored the opposition 43-6 over the last four postseason games. Last night they set a record for both most hits (17) and largest margin of victory in a Series opener. Tonight they come back with Curt Schilling, who is 10-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 18 career postseason starts. He'll face Ubaldo Jimenez, who has pitched well in the postseason so far (2 runs over 11 2/3 innings). But as witnessed last night, facing the Phillies and D-backs is different than this Red Sox lineup right now. Boston is the pick (-164) in Game Two according to Dunkel, which has the Red Sox favored by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Boston (-164). Here are all of today's games.

                              Week 9

                              Boston College at Virginia Tech
Thursday night has become a nice tradition in Blacksburg as Virginia Tech is 13-2 when playing as the primetime ESPN game. The two losses? Boston College. Tonight looks to be just as close as the Eagles come in with a perfect 7-0 record and one of the best offensive players (QB Matt Ryan) in the country. Ryan is on pace to throw for 3,600 yards and 30 TDs, and can pick from any one of five different receivers who have at least 24 catches. The ground game isn't too shabby, either, with Andre Callender and L.V. Whitworth combining for over 900 yards and 11 TDs. Virginia Tech has rebounded nicely from the 48-7 debacle at LSU earlier in the season. The Hokies have won five straight thanks largely to a defense that is fifth in the nation in sacks (26) and ninth in tackles for loss (60). The question will be how much offense Frank Beamer's team can generate especially with QB Tyrod Taylor questionable (high ankle sprain). Backup Sean Glennon did a good job replacing Taylor in a recent win over Duke, but will face a tougher time against a BC defense that leads the nation in INTs (18) and is also No. 1 against the run (46.4 ypg). The Eagles look capable of handling the intensity of a Va Tech road game and are a good underdog pick (+3 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has BC favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Boston College (+3 1/2). Here are all of this week's picks.

When I was a kid, my Little League coach took his family to Red Sox’ spring training every February; it was their annual vacation. He was a real fan. Since 2004, oodles of bandwagon Red Sox fans have popped up. They wear pink hats and are loud- they act like the '04 title trumps every title won by every other team. Real fans understand, and don't act like that.

What follows is a quiz that will help weed out the bandwagon jumpers. If you are an avid Sox fan, this quiz is an insult to your intelligence. If you’re a bandwagon guy, you’ll struggle.

                                13) What Boston sub was supposed to be a defensive sub for Bill Buckner in ninth inning of Game 6 in ’86 World Series?

                                12) Who threw the pitch that Bucky Dent hit out of the park in the infamous ’78 playoff game?

                                11) What former Alabama QB was also slugging 3rd baseman who often batted ninth in powerful Boston lineups in the late 70’s/early 80’s?

                                10) Which current major league manager played first base for both Red Sox and Milwaukee?

                                9) What power-hitting outfielder was cut by his team during ’67 season, only to be picked up by Red Sox, who he helped spark to American League title? (Hint: he is still an active broadcaster, but not in Boston)

                                8) What former Red Sox manager later led another American League team to back/back world titles?

                                7) What former Red Sox pitcher won the Cy Young award, then two months later ruined his career when he broke his leg skiing? (Hint: He later pitched for the Phillies)

                                6) What former Red Sox outfielder went to USC, originally on a football scholarship?

                                5) What former Red Sox pitcher was known as the Spaceman? What number did he wear?

                                4) What position did current NESN announcer Jerry Remy play during his major league career?

                                3) What Red Sox outfielder hit a dramatic 9th-inning homer in Game 6 that turned the ’86 ALCS in Boston’s favor?

                                2) Who was manager of the Red Sox before Terry Francona?

                                1) What college did Roger Clemens attend?

                                ----------------------------------------------------------------------
