          Wednesday's key NHL matchup notes

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (-115, 6)

Tampa Bay has outscored its opponents 16-6 at the St. Pete Times Forum, but has been outscored 10-5 in losing its only two road games with Vaclav Prospal posting two goals. The Lightning have not opened a season with three straight road losses since 2000-01.

Buffalo Sabres at Carolina Hurricanes (-145, 6)

The Hurricanes look to continue their early season success and snap a five-game losing streak against the Buffalo Sabres when the teams meet at the RBC Center on Wednesday.

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers (-115, 5 1/2)

The Atlantic Division-leading Flyers look to continue their success away from home and try for their sixth consecutive victory when they face the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night to begin a key season-high, six-game road trip.

Vancouver Canucks at Detroit Red Wings (-200, 5)

Henrik Zetterberg capped Saturday's scoring with his seventh tally of the season. He has scored a goal in a career-high six straight games and has recorded a point in each game this season. He hasn't fared as well against Vancouver, which has held him to four goals and two assists in 15 career games.

Minnesota Wild at Calgary Flames (-125, 5)

Minnesota (7-0-1) is off to the best start in franchise history despite not having scored more than three goals in any game this season. Oft-injured Pavol Demitra could be sidelined on Wednesday night when the Wild meet the Calgary Flames at Pengrowth Saddledome.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers (-120, 5 1/2)

The Flyers are off to a fantastic start to the season, posting a 6-1-0 record through seven games. They will be hunting for their sixth straight victory tonight in Florida. The new and improved Flyers are playing some solid hockey with the help of their young players stepping up and top acquisition Daniel Briere supplying the spark they expected when the signed him.

            Pick: Flyers +100

Minnesota Wild at Calgary Flames (-125, 5)

The Flames were the toughest team in the NHL to beat on home ice last year but don’t seem to be quite as strong in the noisy Saddledome this year. The Wild, on the other hand, have been good no matter where they play. They’re off to their best start in franchise history at 7-0-0-1 and remain the only team without a regulation loss. In six career starts against Calgary, goalie Niklas Backstrom is 2-1-1 with a 1.76 GAA and a shutout.

            Pick: Wild +105

Vancouver Canucks at Detroit Red Wings (-200, 5)

Henrik Zetterberg continues to light up each team he plays, collecting 17 points in just nine games this year. Tonight he will face one of the world’s top goalies in Roberto Luongo. Even though Luongo has struggled this season, this should be a very entertaining showdown. The Canucks go as far as Luongo carries them but against the mighty Detroit offense that may not bee very far. The Wings have played under the total just twice this year and have played over the total every time it’s been set at 5.

            Pick: Over 5

Baseball today - Wednesday, Oct. 24

              SCOREBOARD Wednesday, Oct. 24

Colorado at Boston (8:35 p.m. EDT). The Rockies meet the Red Sox in Game 1 of the World Series. Colorado took two of three at Fenway Park in June, outscoring Boston 20-5.

              THE SEARCH CONTINUES

After four seasons as a coach, Don Mattingly was interviewed Tuesday to replace departed New York Yankees manager Joe Torre. Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi interviewed a day earlier, and first base coach Tony Pena is due to speak with team officials Wednesday. Mattingly became one of the most beloved players in Yankees history after being drafted in the 19th round in 1979, batting .307 with 2,153 hits and 1,099 RBIs during a 14-year career diminished by back injuries.

              PROBLEM SOLVED

Colorado sold out all three World Series games at Coors Field on Tuesday, one day after their first attempt collapsed in a computer-system crash blamed on people trying to fool the system to hoard tickets. The Rockies, who had labeled the problem as an ''external, malicious attack'', said they sold more than 50,000 tickets in the second round of ticket sales in about 2 1/2 hours.

              COOKING UP A ROTATION

Aaron Cook was added Tuesday to Colorado's roster for the World Series, and he'll start Game 4 at home against Boston. Cook, the Rockies' opening-day starter, hasn't pitched in a major league game since Aug. 10 because of a strained muscle in his side. In June, Cook lost a 2-1 decision at Boston despite allowing just two runs on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings.

              SHUFFLING SOX

Boston manager Terry Francona announced Tuesday that Jacoby Ellsbury will start Game 1 in center field in place of Coco Crisp. Crisp struggled in the playoffs and was replaced in the lineup for Games 6 and 7 against Cleveland, and he also banged into the wall catching the final out of the ALCS. Also, knuckleballer Tim Wakefield was left off the roster because of a bad shoulder.

              MEN IN BLUE

Ed Montague will serve as the crew chief for the World Series, the fourth time he's drawn the umpiring assignment. The six-man crew announced Tuesday includes three umpires working their first Series: Ted Barrett, Laz Diaz and Mike Everitt. Chuck Meriwether and Mike Reilly complete the crew. Montague will be behind the plate in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

              MORE MARINERS MOVES

Seattle signed former major league pitching coach and executive Dave Wallace on Tuesday to be a special assistant to the general manager. Wallace spent this past season as the pitching coach for Houston after 3 1/2 seasons in the same job with Boston. During spring training, Wallace will work with new pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, whom the Mariners hired on Monday.

              SPEAKING

''I've heard that experience thing come up a lot, but in my own mind I've been managing for the last four years, and to be honest with you, as a player you're playing along the whole time.'' - Don Mattingly on possibly being named the Yankees manager despite not having any managerial experience. Mattingly has been a coach on the team the past four seasons.

              SEASONS Oct. 24

1911 - The World Series between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics was resumed after six days of rain, and Chief Bender beat Christy Mathewson 4-2 to give the A's a 3-1 lead.

1981 - The Los Angeles Dodgers came back to beat the New York Yankees 8-7 in a sloppy 3 1/2-hour marathon and tied the World Series 2-2. The Yankees blew a 6-3 lead. On one play, Reggie Jackson lost the ball in the sun and it bounced off his shoulder for a two-base error.

1985 - Danny Jackson's five-hitter cut St. Louis' lead to 3-2 in the World Series as the Kansas City Royals took Game 5, 6-1. Willie Wilson's two-run triple highlighted a three-run second inning and chased starter Ken Forsch.

1987 - Kent Hrbek's grand slam highlighted a 15-hit barrage as the Minnesota Twins pounded the St. Louis Cardinals 11-5 at the Metrodome to force the World Series to a seventh game.

1992 - The Toronto Blue Jays took baseball's championship outside the United States for the first time, beating the Atlanta Braves 4-3 in 11 innings in Game 6 of the World Series.

1994 - Atlanta's Greg Maddux became the first pitcher to win three straight Cy Young Awards, unanimously sweeping the NL honor. Maddux was 16-6 with a 1.56 ERA, the third-lowest in 75 years.

2000 - Benny Agbayani hit a go-ahead double in the eighth inning as the New York Mets handed Orlando Hernandez his first postseason defeat, beating the Yankees 4-2 to cut their World Series deficit to 2-1. The Mets also ended the Yankees' record 14-game winning streak in the World Series.

2005 - Scott Podsednik homered in the bottom of the ninth inning and Paul Konerko hit the 18th grand slam in World Series history in Chicago's 7-6 win over Houston in Game 2 of the World Series.

Today's birthdays: Macay McBride 25; Chris Bootcheck 29; Rafael Furcal 30; Arthur Rhodes 38.

I took the Rockies in a bet with Wayne on here I've always kinda been a NL type of guy, and it's just hard to bet against a team that hasn't lost in over month. How about yourself?

Sorry, kb! I had to take care of some "real world" business for a while.

I couldn't agree more. The Sox are a great team, all the way around, but momentum is on the side of Colorado and, like you say, is impossible to ignore!

And, I've always been an NL guy, too.
